This is the live blog of the 49ers’ Week 2 road game against the Cincinnati Bengals. I will update this with information and analysis from Cohn Zohn Studios.

8:01 My dad and I will announce this game on Hot Mic. To listen to our broadcast, follow these instructions:

  1. Download the app (invite code “COHN10”)
  2. In the app, press 49ers-Bengals.
  3. Press “Cohn Zohn.”
  4. Tune your TV to the game and turn up the volume.
  5. Press “sync TV” on the app.
  6. Mute your TV.
  7. Press “speaker,” and connect to your home entertainment system.

8:45 Here are the 49ers inactives:

  • QB C.J. Beathard
  • WR Trent Taylor
  • WR Jalen Hurd
  • DB Jimmie Ward
  • RB Tevin Coleman
  • CB Jason Verrett
  • OL Daniel Brunskill

11:29 It’s the two-minute warning and the 49ers lead 21-10. Jimmy Garoppolo’s QB rating is 108.9. He has thrown two touchdown passes and one interception. Andy Dalton’s rating is 104.1

11:35 The 49ers lead 24-10 at halftime. Kyle Shanahan is calling his best game as head coach of the 49ers. He’s protecting Garoppolo and still finding ways to create explosive plays. Shanahan also have integrated Raheem Mostert into the offense beautifully and found targets other than George Kittle. The 49ers may score 40 points in this game.

12:12 This game is over. The 49ers lead 34-10. The Bengals never showed up. They look like a team with a head coach who has no clue. The 49ers look like a team with an excellent head coach who has matured. The 49ers would have almost 50 points right now had they not committed penalties which nullified touchdowns.

1:04 The 49ers win 41-17. They made the Bengals quit at halftime. What a brilliant performance. Stay tuned for my grades and postgame Periscope. Thanks for listening to my broadcast on Hot Mic.

  1. This is cool, Grant. Question- how do you handle the tv replays? especially considering you don’t know exactly what camera angle is coming? I’ll give it a shot and hope you are completely uncensored during the broadcast.

  2. Also, wondering how sideline reporting will be handled. Sure, most sideline reporting has little worth, but on occasion it reveals rather important information. Will the Cohns simply listen to the sideline reporting and pass along that which they feel is important?

  3. I like our chances today. My local casino has Bengals – 2, don’t normally lay action but this one’s EASY MONEY. Week one is not usually a good indicator of a team’s true strengths. The Bengals made it close against the Seahags, but I think that was an outlier. I bet we beat the Bengals by 15, in their own crib.

I wish Verett was playing, as Grant pointed out, a Sherm match up with Ross is a concern. Expect jams off the line and safeties shading to Ross’ side of the field. Niners roll nonetheless. Niners 38 Bengals 17

    1. PLUS the Rams have their hands full and Seattle is facing a pissed and embarrassed Steelers squad? We could immediately go into first place.

      1. I am hoping the Seahawks and Steelers get into a slugfest. That way, the Steelers may be under- manned next week.

        1. Wait a minute…. Sebbie…are you wanting Steeler players to suffer injuries? That is sooooooooo not you.

    1. Har Har Har. It’s so funny when perennial losers try to instill fan fervor on a tepid fan base Just like the pre-Brees AINTS, Who Dat gonna beat the Saints.? Every-freaking-body.
Cmon guys this is the Bungles. One of the absolute 5 worst franchises in the NFL. If we can’t roll these Chumps, we’re worse than we thought. And it will be a LONG season.

  4. The funniest thing I’ve heard today is how Gardner Minshew stretches in nothing but a jock strap in the locker room.

Let’s beat the snot out of Dalton, and fly home victorious. Go Niners Go!

  5. By mid-afternoon we’ll be arguing, posturing, and pointing fingers–even if the 9ers come out on top.

    1. I tried using it but the microphone sync won’t work where I am. The bar has a different game turned up.

  6. Well it was a rough start for Grant on the HotMic but he has settled in nicely after the initial jitters. Lowell has been smooth throughout. Nice work, guys! It’s tough to do this while people are watching you the whole time.

  7. Jimmy throws into quadruple coverage off his back foot again and leaves a floater. Really need him to work on that.

  8. How to not use a time out. First the QB false starts. Next throw a pass with the entire defensive backfield surrounding your lone receiver. What the hell was that garbage?.

  9. And just like that back to back penalties then the int and the Niners are who we thought they were.

    1. Allie, you display a lack of awareness. Most everyone on this blog has far more football intelligence than you do.

    2. Your are soumding pretty stupid. Let us know at game emd that you really are pretty football ignorant.

  10. Starting to think this is Jimmy G. And with that money I ain’t buying. At some point he’s got to stop throwing those damn balls.

  11. First it’s the D not showing up while the O romps. Then it’s the D bailing out the Os gaffs. Fan hot takes are in mid season form.

  12. Atta boy Wilson Jr. good for him.
I’m more happy that NONE of these TD’s have been called back and ZERO red zone killing penalties so far.
Maybe next week we can see no INT throws.
    Brick by brick. ?

    1. Lmao Jack that was hilarious. No really quit your day job and let’s put a mic on you. No really, I’m serious. Honest!

  13. Nice start by the 49ers. Some explosive plays on O and good stops on D. The JG INT was an awful pass – he simply didn’t see the CB didn’t stick with Deebo.

            1. Stop pretending you are a woman in college. Some (actually many) of your perceptions have a grain of truth, but your college girl act (and the subconscious manipulation you believe you will get out of it) is wearing thin. That being said, I enjoy your posts (the ones without the college student act), and my opinion is that this forum wouldn’t be the same without you. Be well.

  14. 4th round investment in a punter seems to have worked out pretty well.

I’m with you Red. Now let’s see all of those first round picks on the D-line get some sacks!

  15. Terrific half of football. Only negatives were the penalties are still high and the pick which didn’t end up costing them points.

  16. This is a young football team, with a very bright future. When the team gets it cleaned up, lookout.

  17. Good music on your podcast Grant
Why are you playing the 90’s cowboys theme song though?
    We don’t like we don’t like we don’t like…
    Cocaine. ?

  18. Where to start. That sequence when the Niners called their first time out was classic.
    .
First, they wasted a time out, Sure would have been nice to have had that third time out at the end of the first half. It might have allowed them to score a TD, instead of settling for a field goal. Then they shoot themselves in the foot when JG messes up. KS is scheming for JG to throw a pass like the WR is wide open. Then JG throws a lollipop, that gets picked off.
    .
Stop wasting time outs like drunken sailors, especially if the following results ensue.

    1. Shanahan is calling plays like a genius with a great game plan and and yet you chose to focus on one bad drive. Okaaaaaay.

      1. I want them to win as much as you do.
        .
Stopping the unforced errors is a good way to do that.
        .
Not caring, and seeing them lose because of that, is not the way I want them to play NINER football.

  19. First test for this team.
First half lead. Are they a put their foot on the throat team? or we got this in the bag team?
Still a lot of football left and I’d have felt better being up by 3 scores instead of two.

Gotta say the bengals O-line is playing better than I thought. Gotta generate some sacks.
Ford amd Bosa and Buck weren’t anywhere to be found in the first half.

  20. Niners still got a player lined up offsides. I blame Kocurek for not coaching them to stay onsides. He should also do his job, and make sure they are not lined up incorrectly.
    .
Sure am glad the Niners have a 2 score lead, but they could be doing even better. Way too many unforced errors.
    .
    GO NINERS !!!!!!

  21. This game has been a blast so far. Just need to keep the clock moving here and that’s a perfect start to the season.

        1. Good question. Who is the Bengals DC? I don’t think they have one the way the Niners are dismantling them.

      1. The team looks very loose on both sides of the ball. Almost looks like they got together to play a pick up game. You can tell they’ enjoying this.

  22. I love our running game. The line is having a game (other than the double holding on the called back touchdown); Bengals have a great defensive line with Atkins and Dunlap. Very impressive.

  23. This is just they type of 49ers @$$ kicking on the road that we haven’t seen in a looooong time. So impressive.

They HAVE to go get Melvin Gordon though. ?

  24. Niners are back!! This is a good old-fashioned butt kicking!!
Drinking Crown Royal/Diet Coke ….the new lucky drink….Low carbing lol..

PS Allie Cat is a fake-ass* loser fan!! ?

    1. Good stuff Crab… had my fill of Gentleman last night. But I’m celebrating sober, my dogs are happy with all of these Touchdown cookies though.

  25. I am happy. They knocked down a pass, although it was not Buckner or Armstead. Looked like Taylor got his hand up.

  26. Pittsburgh does not look as tough, Big Ben has a bad elbow, could be a trap game but will be at home.

  27. Real Niner fans know we have a real QB!
    “That’s my quarterback!”
If you don’t support our starting QB then GTFO!

  28. Looked to me like Deebo was streaking free to the back right corner of the end zone on that missed pass to James. Pity JG didn’t get to him in his progressions.

  29. I think the Niner run game is just this good, more than it is the Cincy front 7 being this bad. They’e tired from the offence not sustaining drives and the Niners are starting to cash in that cheque to every bank on the block.

      1. It was, the last time the Niners started 2 – 0 was in 2012, the last time they started 2- 0 on the road was 1989…need I say more.

    1. I was hoping Wilson would get 100 yards. Glad I was wrong. Breida, and even Mostert look like pro bowlers.

  30. Big Ben out right now with an elbow injury. Not good for a win I needed them to get, maybe good if he’s not back by next week.

    1. Sponge, you need to get a VPN and watch Game Pass live. It’s the only way I can watch it here in NC without getting robbed by Directtv

  31. Great hustle from Solly. If he can keep up making plays with effort there will be a role for him on this team. His motor needs to be high at all times though, to make up for what he’s lacking in talent.

  32. Does it sound like a home game for SF? First drive of the game I could swear I heard defense chants loudly

    1. “Ode to Sebby” (Sung to the latest hip/hop music)

O’ what sorrow when ‘Nowski punts to the 2.
and takes our Sebby straight to school

Grapps is better in the 2nd half.
all of Sebs complaining has run out of gas

Seb says that we have, we have no Greats,
but the big-time complainers now sound like flakes

“The sky is falling, all is bad”,
so when Kittle breaks one, Sebs is sad

As my favorite once said, “This is a new Frontier”‘
and relatively soon Sebs will shake in fear

To sum this up, their draft picks are working,
but make no mistake, Sebs negativity is ever lurking!!

Sebs says “the glass is half empty, every which way”
But the REAL 9er fans like to make Sebby pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Wait, I thought, at least according to all of the negative talking heads, the 49ers OL stinks, Garoppolo’s lost it, or never had it, and their secondary is weak? WTF?

    1. One can never be short on negatives even if it may get difficult to pin the blame:
      1. Injuries.
      2. Penalties
      3. JimmyG still throwing picks…
      ..
      ..

oh, yes, thew favorite one for all losers:
      “The opposition was weak” !!!

  34. Who was that questioning the talent on this team?
This team just might be a super bowl contender if they do two things.
Clean up penalties and stay healthy.
Champions don’t get penalized like they do.

  35. Must have been a dilemma for Kyle: sit Jimmy G all of 4th quarter or let him get the game snaps he badly needs.

  36. Rapistburglar went down with an elbow injury today. We have a good shot at 3-0 this season.

  37. Players that have stood out to me:

    1) Breida – Monster game
    2) Alexander-he’s been everywhere on the field. Tremendous job!
    3) Mostert- also a heck of a game both running and receiving.
    4) Kittle – he’s always in the mix
    5) Bosa has been quiet stat wise but has had his presence felt.
    6) Witherspoon – he’s a different player
Kudos to all, especially to Saleh and Shanahan.

  38. Where all all the “Darren’s” who predicted 0 and 3 to start the season?

    1. And one lousy punt? What a waste of a 4th round pick.

Yeah yeah I know, that OL we didn’t pick might come in handy about now.

  39. Just caught Ford on the bench, and he was smiling. Certainly didn’t look like a guy with a serious injury. Hopefully, Joe is alright as well.

    1. I am just glad they followed my recipe for success. Establish a running game, so the play action passes are more effective. ;p

        1. Woods made the assessment that Sherman did not need to play safety.
          .
Teams that win by 24 points do not need to make drastic changes.

            1. I will say I am wrong when I am wrong. I do that all the time.
              .
In this case, I am glad I was wrong, because anytime a team has a 24 point win, they are playing well.
              .
However, one will never know if moving RS to safety, may have let them win by 31 points. Moore whiffed on Ross’s TD.

    2. You better believe its going to start! It will go something like this………………”They scored over 40 points–but it should have been closer to 80. Therefore, ShannyLynch AND Grapps must go………Now!”

  40. Awesome road victories for the team! Lots of monkeys off their backs. Now focus on the division wins against hated rivals.

  41. I’m glad we have Jimmy G over Cousins; the Vikings are down 5, and are attempting to come back by running the ball because Cousins has 3 turnovers and can’t hit the broadside of a barn.

    1. “I’m glad we have Jimmy G over Cousins.”

Cousins? According to some here, it’s Mullens that JG needs to be worried about.

  42. Awesome win. Two East Coast road wins – in a row.
Salute : Coaches , Deebo, JG, Breida/Mostert, Kwon, Bosa, R Blair , Kittle
Rothlesberger injured. Hoping Staley and Ford are minor injuries.
Next 6: Steelers, Browns, Rams, Skins, Panthers, Cards

7-1 is conceivable. We are a good team.

  43. Staley has a broken fibula, but sounds like they don’t expect it to be a long term injury (i.e. 8+ weeks) and not expected to go on IR. Still bad news though. Will be interesting to see which OT they bring in.

After many people talked up the need to trade for Gordon and Fitzpatrick, I expect the “need to trade for Trent Williams” talk to be a hot topic this week.

    1. « I expect the “need to trade for Trent Williams” talk to be a hot topic this week. »

Papa and Ryan already talking about that on the radio broadcast.

        1. The Niners need to trade for a OT, but I’m not sure Williams makes sense, as the price is probably too steep. The Niners need a stop-gap until Staley returns.

  44. They owned the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Hopefully two pillars on those lines (Staley and Ford) don’t have serious injuries.

  45. Huge win might be our last Staley broke his leg,not picking up a tackle is gonna come back to bite us big time

    1. They’ve now lost 2 of their top 3 OT’s Speed, what do you think … they grow on trees? You make it sound like they went into training camp with this problem, but they didn’t, it just tough luck.

  46. I definitely underestimated the team in predicting an opposite score. It appears things are falling right for SF with the Pitts injury. AJ Green our this game.
My predictions could be as bad as my fantasy team.
It was nice to watch winning football again.

  47. My biggest disappointment today was being informed by my daughter that I have an obsolete brick for a phone, and could not listen to Lowell and Grant.
    .
My son,who handles my tech, is in Yosemite. He has an iphone, so I hope to listen with him next game.

    1. Once it’s on Android, you can use a PC and an emulator (like Nox) and I believe it should work the same, but I’m not sure how the app itself actually works.

  48. Yeah, the Staley injury sucks. Trent Williams would be a great addition, I don’t want to give up too much though. 8 weeks is a long time but the next 6 games don’t look too brutal, get through that with the bye included and Staley might be back ready.

  49. Great win. Key things I liked about this game:
    – Offensive playcalling was excellent. We really got to see Shanny moving players around and mixing things up from the same formations and personnel groups. WRs were used well as part of the run game as both runners and misdirection.
    – Run and pass blocking was excellent. Whole team did well in this regard bar a couple of penalties that brought back some big gains.
    – 3rd down conversions were good again.
    – Seeing those OGs pulling and leading the way for Wilson’s TDs was nice.
    – Deebo. He gonna be good. His day would have looked even better bar a bad drop and some holding calls.
    – Defensively, came up big on some 3rd downs again.
    – The D really flies to the ball. All 11 guys playing fast.
    – Blair really stepped up with Ford out most of the game. Bosa looked good again. Armstead was also very good but unappreciated in the coverage of the game.

What I didn’t like… injuries. Losing Staley is a real blow. Hopefully Ford isn’t too bad.

The JG INT was also ugly. But aside from that he was pretty good.

    1. Agree on most points though I disagree with the entire D looking fast. Every time I see Sherman, he looks painfully slow.

  50. Great to see the win…..Shanahan called a Fantastic game. Kudos to him and Saleh.

Kittle was awesome as usual and Deebo stepped up. Running game was A+

Bummer on Staley….this team just can’t seem to catch a break :(
