    1. I can NOT imagine a legitimate Niners fan listening to this dude hate on the team and its players for upwards of 3 hours. He can’t help himself now…dying to try and start a QB controversy. Hating on Jimmy and the backhanded compliments. What a joke..

  1. Hey Razor, sent you an email re: the Poke Salad Shanny fantasy league. Can you check when you get a chance? It affects this weekend’s matchups. Thanks!

      1. Houston and I agreed to a trade, but the two day review window means it won’t process until after all the Sunday games. Any way you can use your Commish powers to process the trade now, or reduce the review window to one day?

          1. Thanks Razor! Looks like the league settings changed, but it didn’t apply retroactively to the trade. Is there a setting on the individual trade that can be changed?

              1. I submitted a help ticket on NFL.com. They came back with this ridiculous answer saying the commissioner needs to veto the trade, turn off the No Drop List, manually drop/add the players to the new teams, and turn the No Drop List back on. That’s crazy, I’m not going to ask you to go through all that rigamarole. Seems like there should be a much simpler solution. Oh well. Thanks for trying!

  2. Grant…

    May have missed it.

On hotmic, how are TV breaks/timeouts and halftime handled? Do hotmic announcers fill the air with chit-chat, or will hotmic pump in advertising?

    1. We will talk through roughly 10 commercial breaks and rest for the others. No advertising. We also will do a halftime show.

            1. There’s Seb with his sapiens privilege. Don’t underestimate other primates Seb. They are cleverer than you can imagine.

              1. Seeing as you exhibit the same emotional defects as the aforementioned “Donald”, that’s not surprising in the least.

But this is Grants column, lets not make it all about you and what clever putdowns you think you can come up with.

              2. Stop leading with your chin. Prime, Easy and your attempts at engagement with me, just reminds me of dancing monkeys.

              3. Glad you are learning your lesson.
                .
Ignore me, and stick to football. If you can avoid the snark, you can be a decent contributor to this site.

      1. Couch Potato Commentators, LOL!
Even the TV guys interview players and coaches before the game. LC & GC got squat.
        ‘They’re football guys.”
        No they’re not.
        LC= boxing
        GC = ummmmmmm? Soccer…..?

        1. Wrong. Lowell is a legend. His Green Section coverage of the Niners during the Glory Years, was not only a must read, it was a first read for me.

          1. And Sebbie…. Lowell was solely responsible for cowing Bill Walsh–to the point where the 9ers won Super Bowls, no? You’ve said so in the not-too-distant past. No Lowell, no 9er success under Bill.

          2. Must and first read? TNot to denigrate any columnists from that era, but you basically only had 3 choices. The chron (the color of its sports section is what set it apart imo, not it’s writers) the examiner (being a hearst rag, never in our household) or the merc. After I moved to NYC in the 80s, I subscribed to The 49er Report weekly. That’s how I got my Niner news.

            1. Moved in 84 to Chicago area and also subscribed to the 49er Report . Received the paper a week later..
In Jan 82 just before the Superbowl the green sheet had the 3 writers predicting a 49er loss. That’s when I lost all faith in Dickey, Cohn and the other bozo on the Chron. It was like they couldn’t see the magic of that first Superbowl team wasn’t going to be denied.
I find Grant to be amusing with his opinion, but for Niner news I like the column from KNBR better.

              1. Didn’t Dickey call for Walsh to be fired after 4 games in 81? Dickey and LC were stone throwers, and their insurrection attempt didn’t get any traction; fortunately.
It’s s cool. They’ll (LC&G ) have some fun together. I won’t know for sure because I won’t tune in, but I’m betting the repartee and football analysis will be as good or better a chez nous. Bon chance!

              2. Walsh himself had self doubts to wrestle with, at the beginning of the season, but gutted it out, and the rest was history.
                .
I much preferred Lowell over Dickey. Dickey tended to state the obvious, but Lowell challenged Walsh. Lowell would point out where Walsh would fail, and dare him to prove him wrong. In hindsight, that was a master motivational strategy.
                .
Ah, yes, those were the days. The Newspaper had a lot more power, good writers were expected, and the Bay Area was blessed with top notch journalism. Walsh knew they were highly intelligent, and kept him on his toes.
                .
I hope Lowell can talk about those Glory Years. Oh, how I yearn for a return to Niner relevance.

  3. A few things…
    – The defense took away the run but the Bengals put up 418 yards passing and were top 10 in the league in total offense. They went up and down the field but failed to score, even missing a field goal that would have been the difference-maker. It will be interesting to see how our defense stacks up vs Seattle’s performance.

    – Expect Jimmy to be under a lot of pressure from Cinci’s defensive front. They are good! I expect he will continue to struggle until about week 6 then his game will pick up.

    – SF will try to keep Sherman from covering Ross and when he does they will have safety help.

    1. Bengals have a loser culture. They have for years. It’s why they lost to Seattle. I don’t back them to make the clutch plays, and that’s why I think Niners win, 24-20.

      1. I beg to differ. The Bengals will look at those runs up the middle, and try to emulate the Bucs. Dalton put over 400 yards passing on the Seahawk DBs. They went to the hostile Clink and could have easily won, if not for a missed FG.
        .
The Niners should not take them lightly. They might be as sick of losing as the Niners.
        .
I sure hope Verrett is fully healthy. Maybe the Niners should have him shadow Ross.
        .
Still, I am hoping for a win. Niners 24-23. If the Niners manage a second East Coast win, they may give me hope for a winning season.

        1. I don’t know if you really differ here Seb. I expect the Bengals to move the ball, to score some points, and otherwise play a decent game. But they’re losers. It’s why it’s so important for the Niners to gut out wins, because the Bengals is what you end up as if you don’t establish a winning culture. Look at how they managed to lose the game in Seattle. Every opportunity they had to blow the game, they took, with unforced error after unforced error. I expect a close game, and all of the above, but when it comes down to brass tacks I expect the Bengals to wilter, like they do every year.

          1. I will not label them as losers, since the Steelers have regressed, and the Browns are Browning. They might actually have a chance of winning their division.
            .
The Ravens beat up on a tanking team, so they should not be crowned after one game.
            .
The Bengals have a new coach, and seemed to get the most out of Dalton. It may be harder than you think, but I sure hope you are right.

  4. Seems as tho Dalton/Bengals play the short game very well. Slants from both sides of the formation, RB’s out in the flat, an array of different look screens. They ran the flea flicker and the wheel route. After the defense starts to creep up toward the line of scrimmage to stop/slow down the Bengals short game, then Dalton will go deep. I think he tried four or five deep throws. I believe the Bengals will move the ball between the 20’s but the Niners stymie them once inside the red zone.

The Bengals got to Wilson four times, as we know that’s not an easy feat. I don’t have the concerns about the Niners offense that some have. Penalties are something that can be fixed – discipline, both self and as a team.

Last week I nailed the Niners score with 31 points, this week Niners 34 Bengals 13.

    19 -0 baby 19 – 0

    1. I love it! My big key to the game. Limit the Bengals offense to FG’s in the redzone, and score TD’s in the redzone for the 49ers.

      1. I think KS micro managed the game last week trying to protect JG from further injury and also to acclimate him to playing football again. I see the gloves lifted from here on out. If/when the Niner offense gets untracked – lookout this will be a very tough team to beat regardless where the game is played.

On at least one play last week the Buc’s used six blockers to block three defensive lineman. Left Bosa one on one. They also kept a back in plus the QB. That makes nine players accounted for on their side of the line. Cant ask for anything more, unfortunately Winston still completed the pass for 16 yards.

  5. 30-21 Niners.

2 TDs, 250 yds from JG. He delivers as he knows he’s on the silver hammer hotseat (as allie surmises, he spends all his time reading this site instead of studying the playbook). 1 int because we need something to endlessly dissect all next week. 2 other trips inside the RZ turn into FGs because they will be penalized back out of the RZ (Niners still gotta Niner). One return TD from James.

On defensive side, 5 sacks including 1 stripsack, 2 ints. Still over 300 yards passing, over 120 yards rushing allowed.

    Go Niners!

  6. The Niners will win IF….
They don’t turn the ball over
They don’t shoot themselves in the foot with penalties.
Two very simple keys to the game.

    1. MD,
I agree. They managed 31 points last week and that’s with the offense leaving 21 pts on the table. That says a lot about what this team is capable of once they shake off the cobwebs.

Lynch did a good job in shoring up the defense. Last month I said that the defense was going to show the biggest improvement on the team and they have. Once we get the offense in sync – look out!

      1. AES agreed.
I predicted the defense will carry this team on the road the first two weeks before the offense starts showing its real capabilities. I think it’s really starts clicking vs Pitt at home.

    2. The same is true for the Bengals. Generally speaking winning is about limiting mistakes on your part and augmenting the mistakes made by opponents.

One of the hallmarks of the 1980’s team was immediately going for the jugular was with TD plays after a turnover to demoralize the opposition. It was also one of the shortcomings of the Harbaugh teams.

      1. True yeast,, but SF is more talented on both sides of the ball IMO.
I don’t think there are to many teams that could beat them if they did these things every game.

        1. I think you may be over valuing the talent we have, or under valuing other teams’ talent.

There are few NFL teams that would lose if the turnover differential was flipped or penalties were also.

          1. Or maybe you’re under valuing the talent on this team.
There are more bad teams than good.
This team hasn’t stayed healthy enough long enough to showcase the talent. I see it. Maybe you don’t.

              1. Hey Jack, I told you they would release a TE, I just picked the wrong one, so I was only half right. To be honest, I am a little surprised it was Smith, but not shocked.

                Will K. Smith clear waivers?

  7. Hey I have some rules questions regarding that blocked punt from last week. After the block, a Bucs player recovered and advanced the ball to within one yard of the first down. Had he made it past the 1st down marker would Bucs have maintained possession? Does Nzeocha’s block count the same as a muff, I guess not as Niners got the possession after all. What if the blocked punt had traveled past the line of scrimmage? Does a different set of rules apply? And secondly (thirdly?), Nzeocha’s epic pushback of his blocker almost resulted with the blocker as being the one who came into initial contact with the ball. If that were the case, what would be the rule of the kicking team advancing the ball? Mike Pereira, where art thou?

        1. I think (as far as I know) that they are the same.

Leave it to the NFL rules committee to make something straight forward difficult.

“If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock.”
          ~Arthur Goldberg

  8. Bucs were able to run on niners only after Kwon was out of the game. I expect them to test Sherman with replay PI.

  9. A bit off topic from this thread, but I have not been reading the blog much lately. Did CFC or anyone else do a Yahoo Sports Pick’em league for this year? Thanks.

    1. JP, CFC decided not to do it this year for whatever reason. No one else did one that I’m aware of. How’d you like that win last week?

  10. Matt Maiocco
    ‏@MaioccoNBCS

The #49ers can be expected to promote RB Jeff Wilson from the practice squad by 1PM (PT). Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert are the only available halfbacks currently on the roster.

  11. The game will be close and I suspect it will be a defensive affair. Not sure which way to go as both teams match up well with one another.

Although it’s been a while where I felt the 49ers has a chance to win which was legitimate.

  12. I really don’t see this as a close game unless we surrender some fumbles and ints…. Thankfully, we’re quite a bit better than we were at this time last season….

    40-17

      1. Smart timing to make the move though. Most teams won’t be looking to add to their 53 the day before a game.

      2. Getting Wilson on the 53 is more important than a 6th round TE.
        .
I think the Niners are going to run the ball 30 times, like KS wants them to do. I hope they line up Wilson deep in the I, then let him build up a head of steam, before letting him choose the weakest part of the D line.
        .
Grant wants that 2 TE set, and I hope Wilson gains 100 yards, gashing them up the middle.

  13. Hi, Grant. We are Niner fans living in NYC. We used to read Lowell’s columns when he was more 49er active. Now we want to listen to you and Lowell calling the games. How is it possible to sync your calling to the Sunday Ticket video? Please advise. Otherwise it’s impossible

    1. Hi, Michael. Thanks for asking.
      1. Download the Hot Mic app to your iPhone.
      2. Use the invite code “COHN10”
      3. Open the app.
      4. Click on “NFL”
      5. Click on the Bengals 49ers game.
      6. Click on “The Cohn Zohn”
      7. Turn the volume up on your television where you’re watching the 49ers game.
      8. Press “sync TV” on the app.
      9. Mute your TV.
      10. Click “speaker” on the app, and select your home entertainment system. If you don’t have one, you can simply listen to us on your phone.

    2. Hey Michael, another Niner fan in the NYC house here. Do you ever make it to Finnerty’s bar on game days? Maybe not so much now that you have Sunday Ticket. A life saver, eh?

  14. Bengals win easily 31 to 12.

This team is mediocre. Undisciplined. Young. Expect the bubble to burst tomorrow. The howling will be about ineptitude at O Line Qb Wr and the running game. I suspect the secondary will be questioned as well.
Cincy is getting a second chance at week 1 vs a starting lineup that will resemble Seattle’s 2nd string in scheme and ability.
