49ers @ Chiefs preseason live blog: Second quarter

This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers’ exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

5:50 On third-and-five, McCoy scrambles for 18 yards.

5:52 Three plays later on third-and-four, McCoy misses Celek on a crossing route. McCoy led him too far. Dawson makes a 55-yard field goal and the score is 10-6 Chiefs. The 49ers were unsuccessful on two runs during that drive because Celek could not hold his block.

6:00 Baldwin beats Tramaine Brock on a post route and Smith throws a perfect pass but Baldwin drops it. Two plays later, Smith throws a screen to Knile Davis, Wilhoite gets blocked out of the play and Davis gains 17 yards. Three plays later on third-and-six, Asomugha blitzes and forces Smith to throw the ball before he wants to and the pass falls incomplete.

6:04 Tolzien is in the game with the backup O-line. On first down,  Dixon misses a block in the backfield and Hampton gains no yards.

6:11 Two penalties on the chiefs move the 49ers into Kansas City territory. Chad Hall induced a 17-yard defensive pass interference penalty and Tolzien induced a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty. On third and one, Hampton lost two yards on a sweep to the right. The 49ers’ backup offensive line got no push against the Chiefs’ starters. Harbaugh has Tolzien go for it on fourth-and-three. He threw it Osgood on a stick route, but the pass also gets intercepted.

6:14 The Chiefs go three-and-out. On second-and-seven, Spillman blitzes, Smith braces for the hit and Corey Lemonier takes him down for a three yard loss.

6:17 On third-and-seven, McCoy throws a back shoulder pass to Jenkins and Sean Smith picks it off.

6:21 On third and four, the 49ers bring the house and Eric Reid hits Alex Smith as he tries to dump the ball off to the tailback. The Chiefs kick a field goal. 13-6 Chiefs. The 49ers’ second-team defense has played well against the Chiefs’ first-team offense.

6:25 Osgood drops a low back shoulder pass from Tolzien on second and four, but on the next play Tolzien hits Hall down the middle of the field for 21 yards. 2 minutes left in the first half.

6:29 Three plays later, Tolzien throws the ball to nobody as Tamba Hali pushes Patrick Omameh into him.

6:33 Parys Haralson beats No.1 pick Eric Fisher around the edge to sack Alex Smith and end the first half.
