49ers – Cowboys Injury Report

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t suffer any major injuries in their week 4 win over the Arizona Cardinals. In fact, the only injury was to reserve offensive lineman Jon Feliciano.

Next up is the rival Dallas Cowboys who have been dealing with injuries at key positions all season. Despite the health issues, Dallas has started 3-1 and their defense has allowed the fewest points of any team.

Here is the 49ers-Cowboys injury report, with analysis.

Wednesday Notes

  • San Francisco added offensive lineman Ilm Manning to the practice squad. The 49ers really liked how the rookie looked throughout training camp, but lost him to Arizona when trying to slip him onto the practice squad. Arizona released Manning from its 53-man roster on Monday and the 49ers wasted no time bringing him back.
San Francisco also added running back Jeremy McNichols to the practice squad. To make room for Manning and McNichols, the 49ers released fullback Jack Colletto and defensive tackle Marlon Davidson.
  • There were no surprise additions to the injury report today.

Thursday Notes

  • The only player not on hand for the start of practice was running back Elijah Mitchell. Mitchell suffered a knee injury last Thursday when he was tripped up in practice. He missed the game and has yet to return.
  • Jon Feliciano appears to be making progress as he returns from a concussion suffered against Arizona. The reserve offensive lineman was running on the side.

Friday Notes

  • The 49ers are mostly healthy for Sunday. Elijah Mitchell will miss the game. The running back missed last week as well. He will be replaced in the lineup by Ty Davis-Price. Jon Feliciano has cleared the concussion protocol and is listed as questionable.
  • San Francisco added pass rusher Randy Gregory in a trade with Denver. Gregory passed his physical in Santa Clara on Friday. According to Kyle Shanahan, the defensive end will return to Denver to spend some time with his family before returning to the Bay Area on Monday.

Wednesday Notes

  • Parsons played 44 of 55 snaps on Sunday despite dinging his knee. The pass rusher has four sacks, eight quarterback hits, 14 tackles, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble and a pass defensed in four games this season.
  • Starting tackle Tyron Smith remains out. He’s missed two games with the injury.

Thursday Notes

  • The Cowboys had their entire starting offensive line on the practice field today. This is the first time Tyron Smith, Tyler Smith, Tyler Biadasz, Zack Martin and Terence Steele have all been on the field at the same time this season.
  • Michah Parsons spoke with the media about how his knee is feeling. “It was definitely a banged up game,” said Parsons. “But honestly, after getting my treatments and doing the extra work I need to do to get prepared for this game, I feel really great and high spirited right now.”
  • According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, former 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is helping the Cowboys prepare. Lance met with Dallas coaches early in the week about personnel and system knowledge. He has also been trying to emulate Brock Purdy for the Dallas defense as part of the scout team. Kyle Shanahan was asked about this Wednesday. “Hopefully he’s talking to them all the time and making them focus totally on that instead of the simple stuff of watching the tape,” said Shanahan.

Friday Notes

  • The Cowboys listed everyone other than tight end Peyton Hendershot and safety Damone Clark as full participants in for Friday’s practice. Hendershot is out for Sunday and Clark is listed as questionable.

  1. Might be a lot simpler to list Elijah Mitchell when he’s NOT on the injury list, thank you.

  2. Talk about compliments.

“When you look at his career, so much is made about measurables when these young men come out in the draft,” McCarthy said. “But he’s played high-quality football his whole life. I mean, this guy was born to play quarterback.”

  4. Jack: Feel free to point out where you agree, or disagree.
IMO; Week five 9er VS Dallas Key matchups:
    1) Who sacks the opposing QB the most, 9er or Dallas D? I see 9er D with 2 and Dallas 1.
    2) Which front 7 can shut down the other teams RB(s)? I look for CMC to gain 100+ yards & control the clock.
    3) Can 2nd year Dallas CB DaRon Bland replace Trevon Diggs? Can Bland cover Aiyuk and Deebo? IMO, NO! I see KS calling plays that isolate him against both.
    4) Can 33 YO Dallas CB Stephon Gilmore cover Aiyuk and Deebo? Again, NO, especially on cross routes! I also look for BP to go deep when Gilmore matches up with Aiyuk or Deebo. I see both scoring and having big games.
    5) Can the 9er DB’s control Dallas WR CeeDee Lamb, keep him under 100 yards receiving, with no more than 1 TD? TBD…..A weakness Wilks needs to address after last week against Arizona!

  5. GEEP,
“5) Can the 9er DB’s control Dallas WR CeeDee Lamb, keep him under 100 yards receiving, with no more than 1 TD?”

You brought back some old memories with this question. Back in the mid 90s during the 49ers/Cowboy’s wars, I remember the 49ers game plan was to stop WR Michael Irving. But, their #2 WR Alvin Harper would hurt the 49ers defense.
Hopefully, Wilks can close down Lamb and the other Dallas WRs. The 49ers don’t need any unexpected c’boys heroes to show up on Sunday.

    1. AES
      * IMO; If Wilks playes Isaiah Oliver and keeps Isaiah Oliver on the bench, I believe Oliver matches up with Lamb when Dallas plays him in the slot. Oliver’s success will determine who wins the game.
      * I also believe after Lamb, TE Jake Ferguson is a bigger threat than WR Brandin Cooks. Warner and Greenlaw
should stop him from hurting the 9ers over the middle.
      * My biggest concern is the mismatch between RT Colton McKivitz and Dallas LB Micah Parsons sacking BP.
      * I see both BP and Presscot playing the short game (getting the ball out <2.5 seconds) to negate the pass rush.
If BP can handle Dallas pass rush and get the ball to his receiver without a turnover, 9ers win the game.
      * Dallas 20 — 9ers 27
      *

      1. Geep,
The 49ers better consistently keep in a RB or TE in on the right side. The only problem with that is KS despises keeping in an eligible receiver it ruins his schemes.

  6. Dick Butkus
    RIP.
I was fortunate to watch him play.
I can’t think of any other player who personified Football like he did.

    1. AES,
He was amazing. I have been watching old youtube videos, now I know that CTE is horrible but football back then was how football should be played. It unbelievable that S. Huff, R. Nitschke and Butkus all played in the same era. I guess you could throw D. Wilcox in with them

  7. I reluctantly predict the 9ers will come down to earth this week for 2 reasons:
#1 the 9ers O line will struggle with the Cowboys pass rush and a heavily pressured BP will throw a couple of Ints.
#2 The 9ers D will give up at least 24 points primarily caused by a lack of sacks and a poor performance by the 9ers nickle backs along with a weak game plan by Wilks.
I can’t tell you how much I wan’t to be wrong, losing to the Cowboys takes me back to 1970, 71 and 72
    R.I.P Dick Butkus

      1. Felix
Do you have a PROBLEM with someone on the blog posting their opinion(s)? ASKING FOR A FRIEND! It seems like you’re insecure and feel the need to attack anyone you disagree with, opposed to being mature enough to just ignore it?

        1. No I don’t have a problem with someone posting their opinion but obviously you do. I’m supposed to ignore opinions I disagree with?? This blog is all about opinions. I will continue to post what ever I choose and you will continue to name call when you disagree. What does that say about you?

          1. Felix
“No I don’t have a problem with someone posting their opinion but obviously you do.”

Reading comprehension is mandatory Felix, least you expose yourself!
That wasn’t my opinion Felix, that was a question! But thanks for inadvertently answering my question with your condescending response and vicarious need to protect the 9ers.

    1. Coach,
After losing to the 49ers in the playoffs two straight years, the Boy’s certainty need to prove that they aren’t the 49ers punching bag.
This game means much more to the Cowboy’s on many levels than it does for the 49ers. And they also have more to lose on many levels if the 49ers beat them.
Not predicting a score, just saying that it should be a good game.

      1. AES,
My fervent hope is that it is an exciting game and another victory for our beloved 49ers. Go 9ers!!!!

  8. It was billed as Ken Willard versus Gayle Sayers, Niners V. Bears , on TV from Chicago on a sloppy field, in 1965, as I recall.
Game lasted about 10 minutes, Sayers scored 5 touchdowns in every imaginable way, Halas benched him to prevent him from scoring 6.

Butkus and Sayers on field that day. Butkus the original monster of the midway. RIP

Butkus and Sayers on field that day. Butkus the original monster of the midway. RIP

    1. Gale Sayers had the greatest stride of any RB I’ve seen. He could cut back against the field and look like poetry in motion.
Sayers was one of my top 10 all-time favorites, that I got to see play.

        1. Barry Sanders was a great RB. He had the ability to stop on a dime and juke people out of their clothes. Sayers ran with a beautiful smooth style that looked artistic. He only played around 68 games before retiring due to injuries. He falls under the category of “what might have been” had he stayed healthy.
After nearly 40 yrs, I still watch his YouTube highlights every now and then.

          1. AES/Geep,
If you want to see Sayers and Sanders before there were Sayers and Sanders watch some Hugh McElhenny You Tube highlights.

            1. Coach,
I’ve watched McElhenny’s highlights as well as the great Jim Brown. Unfortunately, I never got to see them play.
Fortunately, I did see, Lenny Moore, Leroy Mitchell, Paul Hornung, Eric Dickerson and Earl Campbell play.
              These guys were great.

            2. OC
              A blast from the past:
My old football coach used to make us watch old NFL film of the greats from the 40’s thru the 60’s. The days of 250 pound O-Lineman, RB that were much less gifted and defensive players that likely could not make a college squad today. After viewing the film he’d test us on how the game has changed (both team and position) and how it related to what we should be doing to improve.
Just curious OC, but it seems like college players today don’t receive coaching the
fundamentals as much as the past? Whats your opinion?

              1. Part of the issue is the spread offenses used in college the fundamentals used in the spread are radically different than those used in pro offenses. The other reason fundamentals are lacking in college players is the same reason that play in the pro game has deteriorated, rule changes effecting how much they can practice and what they can do in practice.

  10. Best betting podcast in the market is called Bet the Board. Super knowledgeable guys and their data driven breakdowns are better than anything you hear in sports media. Their breakdown of the 49ers v Cowboys game was brutal. They absolutely savaged Spenser Burford and really called out McKivitz. Based on a gigantic mismatch between the 49ers O-line & Cowboys D Line they have Cowboys +4 as their best bet of the week. That was hard to hear.

    1. Pat,
I didn’t need any experts opinions to come up with the same conclusion. I still won’t bet against my 9ers. (see my above post)

      1. I’m definitely not betting against the 49ers. We might be witnessing the birth of something special with Purdy, CMC, & Aiyuk. Not betting against them vs anyone.

    2. It’s a good thing that games are decided on the field.
But, this could be the game of the month. This is a great test for both teams. Iron sharpens iron.

  11. The only player not on hand for the start of practice was running back Elijah Mitchell. Mitchell suffered a knee injury last Thursday when he was tripped up in practice. He missed the game and has yet to return.

    1. Gav,
They are flopping a 6th for a 7th and the Broncos are picking up 14 mill of his salary. The 9ers are paying him the vet minimum and the Brocos 7th could be 3 or 4 spots after the 9ers 6th. I don’t expect much out of Gregory but it is certainly worth the risk imho

      1. OC
Correct me I’m wrong, but if my memory hasn’t failed me….Denver traded for him last year, overpaid him and
then between (two?) surgeries played less than a dozen games?
I believe Peyton replaced him with OLB Nik Bonitto, who had 2½ sacks, including a strip-sack of Justin Fields?

    2. Gav,
Personally, I dont know how to feel about this move. Gregory is an anomaly. He’s been bounced around and missed big amounts of time due to personal issues. If he can help the 49ers coming here on the cheap that’s fine.
