49ers Film Review: Brock Purdy’s five best plays against Tampa Bay

Brock Purdy made history on Sunday.

On his way to leading the 49ers to a 35-7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Purdy became the first rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl era to have at least two touchdown passes, one rushing touchdown and a passer rating over 125 in their first career start.

Here are the best plays from his historic start.

First quarter, Third and seven, Buccaneers 49

On third and long, Tampa Bay sends both linebackers on a blitz. Purdy see’s the linebackers coming, stands in the pocket and drills the ball to George Kittle over the middle in front of the safety for a gain of 15.

Second quarter, First and ten, 49ers 30

Purdy fakes the handoff to Christian McCaffrey and boots out to his right. The Buccaneers outside linebacker goes straight for the quarterback. Purdy plants his right foot, makes the defender miss and attacks the line of scrimmage, throwing a dart to Deebo Samuel on the right side for a gain of 18.

It has been a long time since a 49ers quarterback moved around and made plays like this.

Second quarter, Third and five, Buccaneers 27

Christian McCaffrey lines up wide to the left with George Kittle in the backfield. Tampa Bay responds by having safety Logan Ryan match up with McCaffrey in man coverage with inside leverage and sending a six-man blitz.

Purdy recognizes the pressure, stands in and delivers a perfect strike to the outside where only McCaffrey can get to it. The running back does a terrific job of bringing the pass in and keeping both feet in bounds for San Francisco’s third touchdown.

Second quarter, First and ten, 49ers 20

Kyle Shanahan dials up one of his staple plays, deep curls from the outside receivers with the tight end and full back underneath.

Purdy hits his back foot and rips the throw to Brandon Aiyuk who breaks free for extra yardage and a gain of 25.

What makes this play stand out is how Purdy uses his eyes. As Purdy is dropping back, he keeps his vision down the middle of the field. By doing this Purdy keeps Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David in the middle of the field, creating an open throwing lane to Aiyuk.

Second quarter, First and ten, Buccaneers 32

Kyle Shanahan calls a double move deep shot. Having hit the deep curl route a few plays earlier he has Aiyuk run a stop and go, the defender bites on it and Aiyuk is wide open down the left side.

Purdy pump fakes and with a Buccaneers defensive lineman bearing down on him delivers the ball flat footed to Aiyuk for his second touchdown throw of the game.

For the game, Purdy had five throws which traveled more than ten yards past the line of scrimmage. He completed all five for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

  1. Great work, Jack.
On Purdy’s TD pass to Aiyuk, my initial thought was that he didn’t have the arm strength to lead Aiyuk with the pass and BA had to wait for it.

But the video clearly shows that Brock released the pass an instant before getting hit by a defender who was bearing down on him.

The fact that Purdy was even able to get the ball to Aiyuk was an amazing feat.
Hope there is more to come.

    1. If we’re talking about the same pass, I thought that too, but then I realized it may have gone out of bounds if he put it farther. Regardless, I’m not going top put blush on the Mona Lisa’s cheeks. Purdy did the unbelievable against Tom Brady and a top 5 defense.

  2. AES,
I also thought Purdy’s pass to Aiyuk was woefully under thrown but after hearing that he had strained his oblique I wonder if that didn’t hinder his throw.

    1. You might be correct on this Coach, especially after hearing Shanahan say that Purdy’s injury occured on the second drive of the game.
The pass to Aiyuk under that circumstance falls in the heroic category.

  3. I believe the BA TD was a 35 yard pass. Ian’s being hit right after. I believed in Purdy before the game. But longevity is key

  4. Purdy is not the long term answer. Anyone who thinks he is the answer is fooling themselves.

    1. Agree. Definitely not the long term answer as a starting NFL QB but I’m hoping he’s a long term upgrade at backup QB over guys like CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens. Cautiously optimistic on that point.

      1. Yes and I think he has already proved to be better than Jimmy “Mr. Overrated” Garroppolo. So hopefully we finally get smart and cut ties with him and his bloated contract. Purdy is a highly capable backup to Trey Lance.

        1. * “Purdy is not the long term answer?”
Maybe, maybe not! But ask yourself who is, if the 9ers get to the SB (even if they lose)?
          * What happens if Lance is 2023 starting QB and 9ers lose 3 -4 of the first few games?
          * Just a reminder: Joe Montana’s rookie year, (1979), he was 2W – 12L
          * Lance has not yet shown he has mastered the art of accuracy and reading defenses pre snap. Both are likely due to inexperience and both can be corrected, but how long will that take?
Don’t be shocked it Purdy wins the starting QB job during the 2023 preseason and continues to be
the starter during the regular season. How long he remains the starter will depend on Lance…..TBD
          * There is also the problem with Lance staying healthy. The knock on JG was his availability (IR 50% of all 9er games).

          1. * Missing Defensive lineman Shelby Harris and Al Woods, Seattle has allowed 160.5 yards per game, which puts them 31st in the NFL.
            * Opposing teams have rushed for at least 161 yards in the last 4 Seahawks games, and 2 opponents have gone over 200 yards, which means CMC and Mason should be in for big games.
            * Seattle was without RB’s K. Walker III and DeeJay Dallas last week due to injuries and were out gained 223 to 46 on the ground. The 9ers boasts the league’s top rushing defense, allowing just 75.1 yards per game and 3.4 yards per carry.

            * Without a ground game, Seattle QB Geno Smith and his WR’s Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf will be forced to carry the load against a 9er secondary that ranks 12th in the league against the pass, giving up 212 passing yards per game. They also have more interceptions (14) than TD passes allowed (12), which should mean Geno Smith will be in for a tough evening.
            * Weather conditions: 8% humidity with temps in low 40’s to high 30’s
            9ers 27 Seattle 9

    2. Bay,
Where the heck have you been?!
      Nice to see you back.

Yeah, while I think that BP had an amazing game, we’ve all seen this movie many times before with backup QBs.

Brock has 4 more games to play in the regular season and hopefully more in the post season. We’ll have a much better perspective in a month.
But after last Sunday, Purdy earned his just due.

      1. AES, thanks. I stopped following the 49ers after we released Colin but came back when we drafted Trey Lance.

  5. THURSDAY NIGHT 9ERS VS SEATTLE GAME:
    * Missing Defensive lineman Shelby Harris and Al Woods, Seattle has allowed 160.5 yards per game, which puts them 31st in the NFL.
    * Opposing teams have rushed for at least 161 yards in the last 4 Seahawks games, and 2 opponents have gone over 200 yards, which means CMC and Mason should be in for big games.

    1. GEEP,
      Thanks for the info.
My concerns are that any game between these old rivals can go either way.

Playing on a short week and Petey’s uncanny formula for beating the 49ers comes to the forefront.

Geno has been a pleasant surprise so far and the 49ers always seem to bring out the best in Seattle.
I think this game will be very close.

      1. AES
No doubt Petey the cheat will try to pull a couple of rabbits out of his hat tricks. He’ll likely stack the box with 6 D linemen, trying to stop the 9ers run game. He may use LB’s to try to sack & pressure Purdy, forcing him to make mistakes, (int’s), and the 12th man will make it impossible for the 9ers O line to hear. But without a running game, Smith will be forced to throw!
Can Seattle’s 2 rookie tackles(Abraham Lucas and Charles Cross), contain Bosa and Ebukam? If they can’t it will limit Seattle WR’s Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf to shorter routs, which favors the 9er LB’s Warner, Greenlaw and Al-Shaair controlling the middle of the field.
NOTE: In their 1st meeting, Bosa had 2.0 sacks and five quarterback hits. I look for him to repeat and possibly improve those number. I also look for Ebukam to contribute to Geno’s misery.
IMO, the one advantage Seattle has is the 9ers O-Line can’t hear the snap count and starts making mistakes that limits the 9er offense from controlling the clock and lets Seattle hang around until the 4th Qtr and the 9er D is gassed…….

        1. GEEP,
I think that Petey will bring the house to keep BP off balance and even target Brock’s mid-body area.

This game is the closest thing to a do or die game for Seattle because a loss may put the seahawks on ice until next season.
Not predicting any score except that I believe it’s going to be a close game.

    2. Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf and various unknown Seahawk tight ends have a way of getting sticky hands for home games against the 49ers. At least no Russel Wilson for this one. On a short week with a division opponent this will not be an easy game to win.
