49ers’ Marquise Goodwin to miss Sunday’s game

SANTA CLARA — First, the 49ers lost their No. 1 running back — Jerick McKinnon. He’s out for the season with a torn ACL. Now, the 49ers don’t have their No. 1 wide receiver, either. Marquise Goodwin will miss Sunday’s home opener against the Detroit Lions with a right thigh bruise.

Goodwin is the fastest player in the NFL. He always is a threat to run past the defense and score a touchdown. His speed creates space for his teammates. Without him, everyone’s job will be more difficult.

“Yes, it is a big deal,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “It’s something that you don’t get too down on, even though you could if you sat and thought about it for a while.”

Goodwin has a history of injuries, although he didn’t miss any games last season. But during his first four seasons in the NFL, when he played for the Buffalo Bills, he missed 25 games due to various injuries, and has had four known concussions since 2014.

  1. I hope they elevate Richie James from the inactive list.
    .
So, an all rookie right side? I wonder from which side Patricia will blitz?
    .
Niners should balance out their O line by moving Tomlinson to RG. Then they will have a veteran on both sides.
    .
Matt Tobin might be a good candidate for the LG position, since he is a 5 year veteran.

      1. I’d say a knock against Tobin at guard is his height. He’s a giant (6’6). Toran’s built like a guard.

      2. George, you may be right.
        .
However, I think it is about as wise to put 2 rookies on the right side as it is to move a player to a position he never played before in his life.

        1. No argument there. Tomorrow could be a disaster on that side of the line. Will be interesting to see how Shanahan counters this to keep their defensive line “honest.”

Excited to see more of Pettis. This kid’s going to shine.

          1. I agree. Pettis may play where Grant thinks he will do best. Not in the slot over the middle, but attacking the edges.
            .
Maybe they will bolster the right side by lining up a TE next to McGlinchey.
            .
I hope JG can score TDs. If confronted with 4th and 2 inside the 10, I hope they go for it.

          2. Shanahan could use a two TE package to add an extra blocker for protection and an extra receiver option.

I see us winning in a close game.

Matt Stafford is still a very good QB, he always has a hitters chance.
            It will be interesting.

      1. Correction Grant Marquis is in the top 3,the fastest would be Tyrek Hill of K.C. just thought you should report the Facts correctly.

          1. If you actually watched football anyone can see Hill has the most devastating speed in the league…How many times has Goodwin broke into daylight and outran everybody? Not many. Hill has does it more in a game than Goodwin has in his career. I like Goodwin but thats the facts man. 40 time is not football speed. Anyone who has watched the 49ers for decades knows this as fact.

              1. The 40 yard dash measures straight line speed.

                John Ross: 4.22
                Tyreek Hill: 4.24
                Marquise Goodwin: 4.27
                Taylor Gabriel: 4.27

  2. Shanny may have a restrictor on his offensive engine, but he needs to come up with enough rpm’s to win this game.

    1. The fact that they are playing at Home may help. hopefully KS. comes out with a well tuned up engine. GO Niners!!!!

    2. Brutal. The hits just keep coming. I’m not sure the term “snake bitten” is strong enough! The “curse of Jim Harbaugh” perhaps?

      1. Dante Pettis did more in his first NFL game than AJ Jenkins did his entire NFL career. But, this a lot to ask of a first year WR. We’ll see how he responds to pressure now won’t we? This is a tough break with Goodwin, thankfully it isn’t long term but these injuries on top of injuries to your best players, man, this is getting tough. Already asking a lot of an inexperienced right side of the OL. Richburg making these line calls for only the second time for Kyle’s offense.

Any way you slice it, it’s been a real rough go with injuries this season, laying wreckage to the OL, at RB & WR! This sucks!

    1. Enough about trading for Bell. He would cost (at the least) a second round pick and a costly contract, the latter of which could affect the ability to extend or resign some key players and acquire an edge rusher in free agency.

      1. He won’t cost more than a 2nd and if Jimmy G cost a 2nd, Bell who is easily a top 3 back in the NFL, is well worth it.
Guaranteed playoffs if we get Bell!
We have the picks, we have the cap space and he is a game changer.

        1. You’re assuming more than anything her because if that was indeed the case, then Bell would have most likely already have been traded by now.

          1. Not necessarily Mid. Teams could be trying to see what an extension would look like or take to sign him.
Every passing day his value diminishes and the Steelers are probably holding out for a 1st. That won’t happen.
So spending a 2nd or 3rd for a guy who easily solidifies your back field for the next 5 years should be considered.

              1. He’s still only 26 yearsold. We have the QB, we dont know what we have at WR, but with Bell, him and JM could run shop all day long in the back field for the next 5 years.
He will cost worst case a 2nd, 50 million guaranteed and the next 3 drafts you can focus on pass rush, oline and corner.
The Niners make the playoffs with him, he’s that’s good.

              2. 26 with a lot of wear on the tires. If Shanahan and Lynch want him, then they should go after him in free agency and no sooner.

              3. Too much money and apparently not a fit since Shanahan and Lynch have not tried to trade for him.

          2. Bro. Clearly you dont know Bell. Steelers were playing poker with him, this time he was for real. Now it bled into their locker room. If Mack can get traded, anybody can.

Bell is the most unique runner Ive ever personally witnessed, he hits the hole in an opposite manner of Breida. 49ers are a playoff team with him.

Trade next year’s 1st rounder now.
Everyone scared about cap space and picks…You have to roll the dice man and acquire elite talent. The only elite talent we have to pay is Buckner. I’m glad most of yall aren’t the GM cause your too scared

              1. Boom. Crazy year, with all these top tier players becoming available. We already whiffed on Peters and Mack. Sorry guys but thats what money and draft picks are for, play makers..
Let’s not forget the last time 49ers won a Super Bowl And it wasn’t from stockpiling cash and draft picks Browns style. They made the in season trade for Deion Sanders and the team was literally electrified.

We finally have the coaching, the infrastructure. There’s no Julio Jones around for KS but I’ll take a Bell who will make EVERYBODY better. Real talk. Oh your blitzing my JV RG? That’s cool I got Bell on scat..

            1. You roll the dice when it is what is needed to a Super Bowl contender, not a playoff contender.
Bell is injury- prone, been suspended by the NFL more than once, and has a lot of wear on the tires. A team in the process of a rebuild does not need any of that.

            2. Bell may get traded because he has become toxic, but Mack was traded for 2 firsts and a second.
              .
Bell may be good, but he also ran behind the Steeler O line. Conner gained 135 yards, and caught 5 passes, so maybe they think he can replace Bell.
              .
I sure am glad you are not the Niner GM, because you would give away the store. John Lynch is not scared to make the trade. He is shrewd to keep his draft capital, because that is the best way to rebuild a team. John Lynch did not overpay for Mack, and will not overpay for Bell.

      2. There are no edge rushers suddenly becoming available. Unless you want to give up what the Bears did for Mack which ironically is what the 49ers were in on.

        1. Lynch asked Belichick if he was willing to trade Brady to the 49ers. He’s willing to be bold only if it is the right move. See Richard Sherman.

    2. I agree, Lynch needs to be bold. Already let Peters go to a division rival, and let Mack go to a Bears team that suddenly looks like THEY got the better of last year’s trade and are loaded with legitimate young talent

  3. Crap…! Everyone else shows up with ‘cabbage Patch dolls’…We show up with HALF a team of ‘paper dolls’…what’s next ? trainors with hemmorhoids ?

  4. I’m watching the Maryland vs. Temple game, and a 49ers scout is here chatting away with Temple’s DC.

  5. We can not get a break!!! This is a huge loss and it will impact the whole team. I felt when MG got injured last week defense played closer to the line. Everyone needs to step up this week.

    Go Niners

      1. Yep. Pettis will be fine. His production last week was on par with what you’d expect from Goodwin. The real issue is at RG.

      2. Prime,
Yup, this is a time when young players like Pettis and Warner get their opportunity to emerge as stars.
I’m excited about seeing them play tomorrow.

With Pettis getting the start as WR, maybe we get to see Richie on special teams. Who knows by the end of the game we could have a good view of our future stars.

  6. Goodwin surely is going to be missed. Right side of the line is my main concern. Last game it didn’t seem like KS made any adjustments to protect the right side of the line. IMO he also called plays without regard to the right side, the interception for a TD comes to mind. Like the Vikings the Lions are going to exploit the right side, its a no brainer. If I stated the obvious I do apologize.

Statistically the Niners defense played well last game, hmm…….

    1. I guess this week we will see how bad the Lions are or how bad the Niners are really. 2 teams pretty desperate. I’m also guessing we will see how good the Vikes defense actually was or if it was indeed self inflicted wounds caused by the play calling and execution particularly Jimmy G.
Lots of questions to be answered

      1. Chris??? Chris Lardiere? Is that your last name? If so this is Manubhai Chandalal from Stanislaus State. How are you buddy!! I Niners fan also.

      2. Chris,
Detroit is coming into this game not just to win, but to erase last week’s embarrassment.

Last week the Lions (Patricia) was getting boo’d and fans were leaving in the 3rd Qtr.

They are in a must win situation.
To a degree, so are we. This is a game nearly everybody had marked as a win.
A loss would put as in the same position the Lions find themselves in, right now.
That said, we win in a close game.

    2. Good observation UC. I think a knock on Shanahan is his steadfast adherence to his system above all other considerations. It bears watching.

      1. Yes. In some ways Shanahan is stubborn like his father. I would be wary of the wounded Lions tomorrow. Let’s see what adjustments he makes.

    1. Wow! There has to be someone available that’s better. This is who’s going to be protecting Jimmy G. Well, maybe we will have a shot at Bosa or Ferrell next year

    2. Matt Tobin ran a 4.9 forty. Toran ran a 5.4 forty. Tobin is listed as a LG second stringer, who is a 5 year veteran.
      .
Toran did not get drafted with his slow speed. He signed as an UDFA. Grant likes him though, because he is a fellow Bruin. ;p

  7. Clelin Ferrell has been very impressive through three games this year. 6.5 TFL and 5 sacks. Very disruptive. He’s the clear cut #2 edge rusher in next years draft behind Bosa for mine, assuming both declare.

    1. Bosa will go #1, and Ferrell won’t be too far behind. We won’t get an opportunity at either unless Jimmy goes down.

      1. Yup, Bosa just made a big play against TCU. He’s the real deal.
I like Ohio St., QB Dwayne Haskins. Nice pocket presence and accurate.

    1. Josh should stay put where he has his support network in place, imo, and no disrespect intended towards him.

    2. No, they shouldn’t. The guy has spent more time suspended than playing during his career. And now the Browns are releasing him out of the blue. He seems intent on blowing up his career.

      1. I think ‘intent’ is the wrong word; he’s ill, the addiction is likely secondary.
“Incapable of continuing his career” could work in his case.
But still a No for Niners

    3. Updated: #Browns Gordon showed up late to the facility on Saturday morning and was ‘not himself.’ Red flag for possible substance use was the concern of some in the org, sources tell clevelanddotcom https://t.co/KMdBeX9JVO
      — Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) September 15, 2018

      1. Sad.
I can’t recall any player who has had as many chances as Gordon.
He’s becoming the David Ruffin of football and the Browns no longer want to sing, “I refuse to let you go.”
Actually, I’m fine with our WR corps right now.

    1. Looking at it again, Thomas did not jump offsides. He shifted, but stayed on his side of the line of scrimmage. Maybe he caused the O lineman to flinch, but that was a false start.

        1. A neutral zone infraction is only when a defender crosses the line of scrimmage before the snap of the ball. Thomas did not do that. He stayed on side. He did not line up in the neutral zone. A defender has to cross the line of scrimmage in order to cause an offensive line man to flinch. If an O line man moves before the ball is snapped, and every defender is on side, it is a false start.
          .
Off sides is when the defender is caught at the time of the snap past the line of scrimmage. A defender can jump offsides, but if he gets back on side at the snap of the ball, it is not a penalty.
          .
Encroachment is when a defender jumps offside, and contacts an offensive player.

            1. Thomas moved, but did not enter the neutral zone. He moved laterally, with both hands behind the blue line.

              1. Does not matter if he crossed the LOS. His movement into the neutral zone caused the offensive player to jump.

It’s the rule. It was ruled correctly. If you disagree, you really need to learn the rules.

              2. I am just watching the video. He started off a foot behind the neutral zone, and shifted to the left, still being on side.
                .
Sure, he should not have moved at all, but from what I saw, he did not enter the neutral zone. Granted, the players cannot see the blue line, but if he could have caused the offensive player to flinch without entering the neutral zone, it would have been a false start.

  8. John Ross (4.2 40 time) faster than goodwin off the top of my head, lazy journalism at its finest……..
Goodwin decided he couldn’t play, subtle little jab…..implying he couldn’t tough it out…..watched that play several times we are lucky he wasn’t lost for the season. It was a cheap shot and intentional knee by the dt, but only the well trained eye would catch that.
Feel free to do some research before you post this nonsense, Grant.

    1. I thought the same, but then saw that Goodwin ran a 4.17. Do not think it was an official combine result. Maybe during his pro day.

      1. Official Combine result was 4.25, but hand clocked by others at an unofficial time of 4.17 and 4.19 seconds.

            1. “Ross is fast, but Goodwin would beat him in a race.”

Not if the race is 40 yards. You should have just said Goodwin has the best game speed.

    2. ‘He returned to the game briefly during the 3rd quarter, but decided he could not play THROUGH HIS INJURY.
      .
There was no implication that he could not tough it out. Goodwin decided that he would probably injure it more if he tried to continue playing, or that the injury was slowing him down, so he could not play at 100%.
      .
I have DECIDED that your interpretation is lazy. ;p

    3. Goodwin is an Olympian. He would beat Ross in a race.

Would Pierre Garcon miss a game with a thigh bruise?

      1. Ah so I was correct with my perception of your jab, thanks for the affirmation sir. Atl rb Freeman is gonna miss a few weeks with a similar injury, a contusion of sorts….does that answer your question? Had a teammate miss half the season with thigh contusion in high school, general sentiment in our locker room was that the dude was soft so I totally get it but respectfully disagree.
Goodwin beats Ross is a conclusion you came to based on the fact he’s an Olympian, only prob is I don’t think there’s a 40 yard dash event….if there was Ross would win.
Seb you used to make a lil sense, particularly on Kaep. We were in lock step, but since your hiatus you’ve become Grants version of Michael Cohen. I think Grant is more than capable of fighting his own battles.
After watching tonight’s fight I think I’ve discovered the perfect profession for Grant, boxing judge…….love the blog tho, first place I come for SF news for a few years now, despite Sebs weak takes. Cheers gents!

        1. dReed, guess you are burnt over the loss. Cant claim 23-0. ;p
          .
Hmmm since Cohen is flipping, does that mean I need to attack Grant? If so, maybe I should mention that Garcon missed half a season with a broken neck bone. Injuries are a fact of life, and players, thankfully, have more input about how injured they are, and if they think they can play or not. Goodwin did go out in the 3rd quarter to try to play, so I think he is plenty tough.
