This is the live blog for the Monday Night game between the 49ers and Packers. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

3:53 Here are the 49ers inactives:

  1. WR Trent Taylor
  2. WR Dante Pettis
  3. DT Jullian Taylor
  4. NT D.J. Jones
  5. OG Joshua Garnett
  6. TE Cole Wick
  7. OT Shon Coleman

Besides Taylor and Pettis, all hands are on deck for the 49ers. This is a big game for them. A win would mean so much.

3:55 Here are the Packers inactives:

  1. WR Randall Cobb
  2. WR Geronimo Allison
  3. CB Jaire Alexander
  4. OL Alex Light
  5. OL Jason Spriggs
  6. CB Bashaud Breeland
  7. QB Tim Boyle

3:57 I will start my pregame Periscope at 4:05.

4:46 Here is my pregame report:

5:15 The 49ers will receive the opening kickoff.

5:20 On first-and-goal from the 3-yard line, Matt Breida bounces off a defender and runs into the end zone for the touchdown. The 49ers lead 7-0. Gorgeous opening seven-play drive by the 49ers. Textbook perfect. Kyle Shananahan’s script was balanced and creative. Gave the Packers a little bit of everything. Kendrick Bourne made a 22-yard catch after breaking a tackle. And the offense never faced a third down. The 49ers seem determined and prepared. Beathard took a helmet-to-helmet hit during the drive, but popped right up.

5:30 On the Packers first play of the drive, Jimmie Ward gives up a 60-yard catch to Marquez Valdez-Scantling.

5:30 Two plays later, the 49ers to properly set their defense, and Rodgers completes a screen pass to Ty Montgomery, and he scores. Game tied at 7.

5:31 D.J. Reed fumbles the kick return, and the Packers recover at the 49ers 34. That’s the 49ers’ 14th fumble of the season.

5:36 The 49ers defense holds the Packers to a field goal. Good series for the defense. Green Bay leads 10-7. Free safety Adrian Colbert forced a rushed, incomplete pass on third-and-9 when he blitzed from center field.

5:44 On third-and-2 from the 49ers 45, Packers outside linebacker Nick Perry bats down Beathard’s pass at the line of scrimmage, and the 49ers punt. That was the 49ers’ first offensive third down of the game. They want to avoid third down as much as possible.

5:52 On first-and-10 from the 49ers 34, Macolm Smith bites on a play-action fake and gives up a 54-yard catch to Jimmy Graham. Two plays later, Adrian Colbert gives up a nine-yard touchdown catch to Davante Adams. The Packers lead 17-7.

5:55 On first-and-10 from the 49ers 34, Beathard gets under center, takes a calm seven-step drop and fires a 67-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Goodwin. Great throw. Huge play. Great design by Shanahan. Both Breida and Juszczyk blocked on the right side of the line, helping Mike McGlinchey. The 49ers trail 17-14. Now, the defense has to show up.

6:07 On first-and-10 from the 49ers 39, Malcom Smith rushed unblocked off the edge and forced Rodgers to commit a 14-yard intentional-grounding penalty. Three plays later, the Packers punted from the 49ers 41. The punt bounces into the end zone. Good series by defense. Good blitz call by Robert Saleh.

6:12 On first-and-10 from the 20, Beathard completes a 21-yard pass to Juszcyk, but he takes a few steps and fumbles. The Packers recover at the 49ers 44, close to field-goal range.

6:24 The 49ers defense holds Green Bay to another field goal. Another good series by the 49ers defense. It’s adjusting to the Packers offense. Green Bay leads 20-14.

6:28 On first-and-10 from the Packers 30, Shanahan calls a play-action pass. Goodwin runs a post-corner double move, and beats veteran cornerback Tramon Williams for the touchdown catch. The 49ers lead 21-20. Shanahan is in the zone.

6:33 On third-and-10, Sheldon Day sacks Rodgers, and the Packers go three-and-out. Saleh called a three-man stunt. Good idea, Robert. What a fantastic performance so far by the entire team, minus the two turnovers.

6:48 Robbie Gould makes a 46-yard field goal as the first half ends. The 49ers lead 24-20. The Packers will get the ball to start the third quarter. Good first half by the 49ers.

6:49 Two plays before the field goal, Mike McGlinchey gave up a sack. The Packers blitzed, and instead of sliding to his left as he was supposed to, he blocked no one.

7:08 On third-and-10 from the 49ers 33, Saleh calls another three-man stunt, and it works again. This time, it forces Rodgers to throw a rushed pass into the dirt.

7:09 Mason Crosby makes a 51-yard field goal. The Packers trail 24-23.

7:16 On third-and-2 from the Packers 26, Beathard nearly throws an interception to Kevin King, but Kendrick Bourne knocks away the pass.

7:17 Gould makes a 44-yard field goal, and the 49ers lead 27-23.

7:24 On second-and-8 from the Packers 43, Mike McCarthy calls a play that burned the 49ers a few times in the first half — a play-action naked bootleg. This time, the 49ers are ready for it, Malcolm Smith cuts off Rodgers in the backfield and DeForest Buckner sacks him. The Packers punt two plays later.

7:36 On third-and-4 from the Packers 23, Beathard misses a wide open Kittle in the flat. Next play, Gould makes a 43-yard field goal, and the 49ers lead 30-23.

7:49 On fourth-and-3 from the 49ers 4-yard line, the Packers go for it, and Rodgers throws a pass that hits K’Waun Williams in the calf. Great defensive stand by the 49ers.

7:54 On third-and-10 from the 4, Beathard throws underneath for nine yards, and the 49ers go three-and-out.

7:59 On third-and-13, Ronald Blair sacks Rodgers. Wow.

8:06 On third-and-10, McGlinchey gives up his second sack of the game, and the 49ers go three-and-out.

8:11 On third-and-6 from the 49ers 16, Greg Mabin gives up a touchdown catch to Davante Adams, and the Packers tie the game at 30 with 1:55.

8:25 Crosby makes a 27-yard field goal as time expires, and the Packers win 33-30. Stay tuned from my grades and postgame Periscope report.

  1. We need another poll… “Will the content in Grant’s Popular Tags panel be updated before the end of the 2018 season?”

    1. How about with the number 1 pick in teh draft, the 49ers will draft what QB? I would take the QB now and have something for the future instead of wasting out time next year where we play AFC North, NFC South, the East opp, the North opp. Jimmy G can still start for 3 years and we move on.

  2. When is this team going to get their head out of their butt and activate Julian Taylor. How can know what they have in him if he never plays? The niners have no pass rush. I say play Taylor and sit Marsh’s ass down.

    1. I kind of agree. Taylor needs reps. This should be a question for coaches Tuesday.

Maybe they want to give Thomas and Blair their opportunities before changes are made.

Regardless, I just think this team is not that talented and draft picks are not stepping up to be foundation pieces.

  3. A win tonight and the 49ers are right back in it? As in postseason contention? I have news for you Grant, this is not yet a playoff contender without it’s star QB.

As Wil Willis from Forged In Fire would say ….. This round is OVER!

This team is no longer in the playoff hunt, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things they can accomplish.

    1. We didn’t even have a 3rd down right? Great to see the offense firing….now just need to sustain this for 4 quarters.

      Go Niners!

  4. We might see more of Julian Taylor after the Trade Deadline. I think they are trying to shop a few players around (like Armstead), which is why we might see Taylor in November.

  5. Very nicely done by CJB and the offense. He still needs to slide and not take needless hits. Don’t know why this isn’t ingrained in him yet.

  6. A win would mean so much.

It would be bigger than the Appalachian State upset of Michigan a few years back. Could trigger a major earthquake on the New Madrid faultline.

  7. No more cuteness. Feed the Breid. I already know what’s going to happen though. Kyle will keep it in the air, pack will adjust, and the game will get away

  8. Excellent drive.
    Quick passes, good runs
Hopefully the Defense can stop them quickly, get the Offense back on the field.

  9. Nice. unpredictable play selection. crisp, efficient execution. Great drive.
    .
Then, GB counters…..Ward is replacing Witherspoon, but he looks toasty….

  10. Um,, that was not what I had in mind.
Maybe they should do nothing but man to man so the D backs cannot get confused.

  11. I hate to say it, but I think Robert Saleh has to go. I’d be tempted to fire him after tonight if I see one more blown coverage!

    Simply unacceptable defensive coaching!

    1. Well, that didn’t take long. 2 blown coverages on the Packers’ first 4 offensive plays.

      SALEH MUST GO!

  12. Ward wouldn’t be on most teams in the NFL why is on ours? You would think Lynch would know how to evaluate the secondary and would have drafted his replacement this year.

  13. Stupid backs and LB’s. Can’t move out to cover the 4 receivers.
    Another fumble
    Another failure to cover.
    Unbelievable!

    1. That’s bad coaching 49er42. I mean, BAD COACHING! Despite the misleading numbers, this might be the worst coached defense I’ve seen this year, in terms of missed assignments!

  14. I agree these are professional players with professional coaches.. the players keep making the same mistakes. They get paid big bucks. We need impact changes NOW!

    1. Fire Saleh before the flight home. Hire our own Allie–lots of attitude and decades of experience. Go Allie!

  15. GO NINERS ~!!!!!!
    .
Holding them to a FG was strong, but KS wasted another time out. A disciplined team would have saved that time out.

    1. HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

  16. I try not to blame coaches…but Robert Saleh, where are you? your work does not appear to be showing up on the field, at least not favorably so

  17. CJ Beathard, and his patented batted down pass.

Seriously though, I cannot remember a season where I’ve seen so many obvious missed assignments and blown coverages on defense. It’s less about DB’s getting flat out beat, and more about scheme, and guys not understanding where they need to be or who to cover.

You know it’s bad when there are so many wide open receivers, even I could pass for 300+ yards against this defense.

This 49ers defense is an embarrassment!

  18. The defense really has no clue what they’re doing and are unprepared as usual…. That’s on Saleh. If I’m Shanahan I’m firing him after the game.

  19. Can someone please tell me why the 49ers never line up Salamon Thomas over the center? This whole defence doesn’t seems to know there defence assignments. We have no leadership!

  20. Are we playing 11 on 9 on defense? Not just open, guys are wide open.
How does Saleh keep his job?

    1. Grant Cohn did some serious contortionist work this week, bending himself in pretzels in order to compliment Saleh this week. Is Grant punking us?

  21. Already 31 points scored in the first quarter and 49ers need to stay the distance on this one. Defense needs to show up. 200 yards allowed in 1st quarter.

Zone coverage is not working at all.

  22. Goodwin!!

Psst, don’t tell Hammer this offense is better with Goodwin on the field. He won’t believe you.

Not that it matters because, once again, the 49ers can’t get outside pressure on the hobbled Rodgers.

Now that Garoppolo is out, I’m loving the elegant tank. Let’s face it, a top 3 pick in next years draft will do more for this rebuild than a handful of wins this season.

  23. I could coach the defense with similar results at half the cost… Well, maybe not half, 3/4’s

    1. Yeah Saleh’s weak defense got help from the zebras.
This defensive scheme has the boys playing tentative. They are thinking too much. Running around no where near the open man or ball.
      #salehsgottogo

      1. Yes indeed Prime. And what’s crazy is, it should be the opposite. This isn’t a complex defense, so guys shouldn’t be getting caught flat footed on every other snap.

Honestly, up until tonight I’ve given Saleh a break. I’ve had enough. If he’s coordinating this defense next season I’m going to to be sorely disappointed!

  24. Give Saleh credit when due. Good stop on defense.

That was a good play on 1st down with Malcolm Smith. That penalty was critical to get them off the field. Now if Shanahan remains balanced and not get carried away with more CJ throws. :)

Feed Breida without getting carried away.

  25. LET ME GUESS….. ITS KYLES FAULT THAT THE TEAM FUMBLED TWICE BECAUSE HE DOESN’T HAVE AN OC

  26. Psst …. please guys, nobody mention to Jack Hammer that this offense is better with Goodwin on the field. Jack calls it plug-and-play. The 49ers ought to be able to simply plug anyone in for Goodwin, without a drop off in production.

I mean, why would a WR with 4.30 speed make a difference anyways?

  27. No matter how this game ends, I’m satisfied with the 1st half performance.

    1) No Penalties and except the two turnovers and blown coverages, no boneheaded mistakes.
    2) Run blocking has been fantastic
    3) Defensive adjustments have been good.
    4) Shanahan’s playcalling and adjustments so far have been great!
    5) Beathard and Goodwin are looking great out there!

  28. Sure am glad Witherspoon was benched. Ward actually is playing well after that first pass.

  29. GB gets the ball in the second, but this first half, the Niners have been impressive.
    .
Looks like the defense has recovered, and is playing solid.
    .
    Goodwin is a savior.
    .
CJB is winning this game. Those play action passes are very effective.

    1. Yep. We kind of see that in a lot of games. Defense starts out very poorly giving up big yards in the secondary and missing tackles. Then as the game goes on, it’s like they figure out what they need to do. It’s almost as if Saleh doesn’t watch any film of the competition’s offense.

      1. Lets hope Saleh has this figured out for once… They got this one if the D does their job. It’s not like the GB D is able to stop the Niners offense.

  30. Saleh has regrouped. Really shaky first QTR for this defense, but they’ve settled down and Saleh has been more aggressive than usual.

The OL has taken it to GB’s defense. Grant had to make the point that McGlinchey got beat for a sack, but it was a communication breakdown, which you’re going to get with rookies, and I can live with that. It’s getting beat physically that spells problems for OT’s.

Grant made it sound like Clay Matthews was going to school the big rookie RT tonight. That ain’t happening!

  31. Well we needed 7. The positive we did not turn the ball over. The negative we are setting Aaron Rodgers up for the come from behind win. Hope not.run run run run run run run run run run run. RUN.

  32. They target K’wuan Williams here. He will inevitably get caught but no flag will be thrown and the pass will hit him right in the back.

  33. Great defensive stop! This is the 9ers best defensive game of the season. Looks like the Mike Smith firing early in the week has been a wake up call for the coaching staff! :)

Now we need to be aggressive…..dont run run run…….mix up the play calls and score on this drive.

  34. now let’s see what kind of 4-minute offense Shanny has to close out the game for the WIN!!!!!

  35. on that last punt ….did you notice players quitting before the PR secured the ball………

little things like that is why we lose close games….lack of focus

  36. My prediction: If the 49ers lose tonight, Grant and Hammer will say Kyle ran the ball too much. Should have thrown the ball more. lol

  37. I’ll say it again. Beathard simply isn’t good enough. Just air it out and let Goodwin run it down. Instead, Beathard shows why he’ll be a career backup!

    1. Yeah Red? still lost. Glad you got flexed. 1 and 5 like the Raiders baby. Lower Expectations. you got flexed, ha ha ha ha. I am a happy fan right now. Aaron Rodgers STUCK IT to the team that SHOULD”VE drafted him and Crosby with the ICE KICK baby. Breida, never should’ve played at all. 49ers STINK! Fire Shanahan, Fire Saleh!

  38. Nay nay nay nay, hey hey goodbye! I am so happy right now. Yeeeeeah! Oh yeah baby. This is why the 49ers are FLEXED, can’t win a game.

  39. lol. You can’t make this stuff up.

The 49ers play their hearts out, but GB has a future HOF QB and the 49ers have a guy who’s going to be pretty decent career backup QB! And that’s the difference between winning and losing in today’s NFL!

  40. Maybe in 2019 we will finally draft a CB in the 1st round. Maybe! 10 years we’ve needed too.

  41. Thats a crushing season ending loss. How Saleh keeps his job after tonight is mind boggling.

    1. Good point Prime. You watch though, Grant will find a way to pin the loss on Kyle I’m sure.

Grant will insist that Kyle ought to be able to win in the NFL without a QB, which is about the silliest argument you will ever hear in 2018, but he’ll bend himself in pretzels to make it. lol.

      1. Shanahan does deserve some of the blame though. I felt like he took his foot off the gas pedal too soon in the second half when he needed to continue to be aggressive.

          1. Agreed, but it was a combination of the offense going too conservative, the defense being on the field too much, and missing components on the DL and in the secondary. I am even more convinced that the team needs to take Oliver if Bosa is off the board, get an elite edge rusher in free agency plus another in the draft, sign Thomas or Mathieu to replace Colbert, and find someone to complement Goodwin in the passing game.

  42. I think Beathard is just good enough to consistently lose, even when he plays well. Although if this team can ever get some good DB’s it would sure help.

  43. You know the 49ers win this game going away if Jimmy G is starting.

This loss is for the best in the long run. This team needs a dynamic pass rushing DE like nobody’s business! And a healthy Jimmy G.

  44. Not that it matters but Shan lost this game. Why is he throwing on 2nd and 3rd & 3??? Awful play calling when it mattered most

    1. How about the defense giving up 10 points in 2 minutes to a team with no timeouts. F me!

      1. Ahhh hahahaha, Prime Time, I knew by 59:00 that’s when the real 49ers come out. Had me worried for officiating was BS giving the 49ers a few calls tonight, not a good way to win a game to cheat.

        1. Darren500, aka Darren the Coward doesn’t dare show up until the game is decided. He must be a Raider fan, lol.

          1. Hey, the game was doo-doo and I don’t watch stupidity out there. I expected the Packers to win 35 to 10, but, win is a win at 33 to 30 over NOBODY”S QB. 49reasons, give me 49 reasons why you watched this crap fest on ESPN that should’ve been flexed. If this was played at 1pm, GB would’ve had an easier win. Beathard is still a nobody like Jimmy G is 137G backup Qb. In the words of Jackie Gleason crooked crutch, you got NOTHING on me for YOU lost the game and tell Jed York to take out some garbage in Kyle and Saleh.

    2. I just got done saying people will blame Kyle, but you beat me to it ddub. He had the perfect play call at the end of the game, but Beathard lollipopped the ball and never gave his speedy WR a chance to run under the ball.

The fact of the matter is, in today’s NFL you can win without a number of core players as long as you have a great QB, and my friends, CJ Beathard is anything but a great QB. He’s not good enough. He telegraphs his throws,, and he buckles under pressure.

      1. @49reasons, I totally agree. But knowing he’s a mediocre, career backup, why would you put him in that situation with those play calls? Maybe Jimmy makes that play but no way CJ does. Pack didn’t stop the run all night and were gassed…you run the ball twice and you have a 1st down and basically put it in the hands (foot) of Gould!

  45. 49ers D played the PREVENT defense and got burned. Packers and Lambeau Field are YOUR MASTER, 49ers, whoooooo! I hope the Bears get a win like that with Mack dominating.

  46. Our defense played hard. Talent wins. We have very little talent. Beathard almost played a mistake free game. In the end he lost himself millions.

    1. Yes he did. CJ Beathard proved to the world why he’ll never be a starting QB in the NFL! That’s a fact Jack!

      1. What are you talking about, he’s starting now! If you mean he’s a career backup then ok, but he’s starting now.

  47. Wow, no 49ers 5th quarter on KGO? Guess when your’e 1 and 5, there’s no talking about how awful you did and GB dominated you again.

    1. Jimmy G would school Brett Favre.

And the entire country knows the 49ers would have won this game going away if they had Jimmy .

CJ Beathard …. not so much!

  48. 49ers grade:
    Beathard, C
    Oline C minus
RB C plus, didn’t run the ball enough
    WR D, lack of talent
    Dline D
    LB D
    Secondary F
    Coaching F
    Overall F, cost ESPN millions.

  49. I bet the LA Rams are EAGER and can’t wait to put a LICK on the 49ers. I’m sure the Rams had to be watching Monday NIght Football. I hope Gurley runs 32 times against the 49ers.

    1. I’ll take a 5-0 team over a 1-5 team. BTW Red, my job pays higher then yours at Taco Bell in the great mall you work at buddy boy. That’s so funny that you lose the game and you’re trying to troll me. I am the game in Triple H and I can’t be trolled.

        1. Red, go flip your taco. I work at Barsottis so go figure that out. been there for 5 years numb nut. Besides, I had 3 hernia operations loser from Safeway. Keep digging liberal. If Trump can take carp from you, so can I. You want me political, Red? I’m out there doing your wife and daughter.

  50. The biggest play was beathard rushing the pass and overthrowing Kittle in the flat. He had Kittle wide open for the first down, and all the momentum.

Let’s face facts guys, Beathard is just good enough to break your heart everyday and twice on Sundays!

And BTW, you lose the turnover battle 3-0 at Lambeau Field, against Aaron Rodgers, your going to lose 19 times out of 20.

    1. 49reasons. says:
      October 15, 2018 at 8:45 pm
The biggest play was beathard rushing the pass and overthrowing Kittle in the flat. He had Kittle wide open for the first down, and all the momentum

WINNER WINNER! Said and thought the same thing.

    2. That was a bad miss, but No. The biggest play was Beathard throwing the pick instead of hitting a wide open Kittle on the last drive.

  51. Hey 49 reasons, maybe if the 49ers and Packers finish the same in their divisions, maybe the North game will get you a packer rematch, OK? I think in 2019 we get AFC North, NFC South, North could be Packers. Who do you want for East in 2019?

I’m glad the NFL flexed the 49ers. I hope they don’t sell out, or a bunch of LA fans will be showing up in Ram gear.

    1. Darren, we all know you are a 12 year old girl, and I don’t talk NFL football with young girls. Sorry.

I think it’s past your bedtime though young lady.

  52. So which 49ers will show up vs. the Rams coming up…the ones that’ll lose by 3 like the Packers did or the ones that will be blown out in their own stadium like the raiders and get booed out of the building? Now remember:

    Draft a QB
Jimmy G can start for 3 years, then you get rid of him
    Sell the 49ers

  53. 49reasons, I don’t think you get the game entirely. you need to be defending your team against mighty trolls and I’m like Ares the god of war as I’m coming in at any old time like Triple H and kicking sand at your pitiful QB, your gimpy RB, your unreliable RB…Kittle? What a joke he is. I’ll take Adams and Graham over Kittle. Goldman, please, he’s just a one trick pony, literally. Your defense is still a high school team. As a proud football team with no owner, the 49ers need to roll over, lose their game, and draft a QB in 2019.

  54. Since you’re new at this 49 reasons:
Family, gay lifestyle, dead animals, job, my house, and talking about your daughter that I got no interest in, or your cousin, or your sister, or your 49er doll doesn’t bother me. I was a fan until Mariucci was dumped, until Young was forced from the game, until the WCO was taken away, and until the York family came and ruined the team. League should’ve left Eddie D back in. Eddie would’ve gotten us a stadium in SF. What Jed has done is a travesty to the team, fans, and the area of Santa Clara so I hope each year with each failure and humiliation that Jed York will soon get tired of this and sell the team, as he has to SOMETIME, moron. If you want to be the faithless sheep to a team that sucks each year and has a backup QB that can’t throw in Jimmy G, I feel for you.

  55. Here are the Packers inactives:

    WR Randall Cobb
    WR Geronimo Allison

And this is why the game was so close. I was sure both the packer WRs were going to play from what I read, but I guess Packers chose to hold them off until the bye. Not sure I woudl’ve done that if my opponent was the 49ers, but maybe Favre knew as limited as he was, he has the 49ers number easy.

Tonight was too close and good thing it was in Green Bay.

  56. Now I can watch the 49ers losing highlight tomorrow morning as I was going to skip it, but now I can watch it feeling happy. Yeah, I had a bad day at work, but the 49ers losing is a great cure all.

      1. Darren’s just your sub average deplorable proving how deplorables got their name. Best to ignore him, and them.

  57. Simply put we don’t have enough playmakers.

CJ did good. Missed some throws. The biggest was that last interception. He needs to unload that ball and take the hit. I have to see again but looks like he didn’t step fully into it. Goodwin had his man beat.

Strap up b/c next week is going to be the NEW RAMS at their best wanting to make a statement for years to come. The same way Seattle did and the Niners pushed divisional opponents around for years. “Same ol’ sorry a$$ Rams…”

    Go Niners!!!

    1. He just underthrew it since it’s hard to overthrow Goodwin. Ah well, the D had a chance to stop them and they couldn’t giving up 521 yards of offense…. Sucks to lose but the Niners haven’t quit fighting even when they have every excuse to.

      1. True, is will be something else if this team can hold it together and pull out a string of wins. It will get easier just hope locker room doesn’t get lost!

        Rogers is awesome though… *sigh*
