49ers – Panthers Live Blog

This is the live blog for the San Francisco 49ers (2-2) week four matchup against the Carolina Panthers (1-3) from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. I will provide updates and analysis from the tool shed throughout the game.

11:40 Inactive for the 49ers: RB Marlon Mack, DT Arik Armstead (feet, ankle), DT Javon Kinlaw (knee), LT Trent Wiliams (ankle), RB Ty Davis-Price (ankle), S Tarvarius Moore (hamstring), TE Tyler Kroft (knee).

12:15 Inactive for the Panthers: WR Laviska Shenault, WR Rashard Higgins, CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver, S Xavier Woods, LB Frankie Luvu, OL Cade Mays, TE Stephen Sullivan

The Panthers defense will be without its two leading tacklers in Luvu and Woods. Carolina placed starting safety Jeremy Chinn on IR earlier this week as well. Advantage 49ers.

12:59 We are going to learn a lot about the 2022 San Francisco 49ers over these next two games. Both are matchups that contenders successfully get through.

1:05 49ers will be on offense to start the game.

1:08 A lot of talk this week about George Kittle’s usage. Shanahan calls his number twice on the opening drive.

1:11 Garoppolo to Tevin Coleman on a screen pass to the right side for the touchdown from nine yards. 49ers quickly up by seven. They take advantage of Carolina missing both safeties and their top linebacker with a 41-yard bolt by Jeff Wilson Jr. and a 20-yard grab from George Kittle.

1:16 Jimmie Ward, Talanoa Hufanga and Tashaun Gipson all on the field to start this game for the 49ers defense.

1:17 Stop me if you’ve heard this before, the 49ers defense forces a three and out.

Christian McCaffrey picked up nine yards on first down. Following an incompletion from Baker Mayfield on second down, Carolina went back to McCaffrey who was stuffed for no gain by Charvarius Ward. Terrific run defense from the cornerback.

1:25 The only way this game is close is if the 49ers make it that way. George Kittle catches a Garoppolo pass and fumbles after picking up eight yards. Panthers will take over at their own 44.

The 49ers offense has now fumbled the ball in four of the first five games.

1:32 The Panthers offense moves the ball into field goal range, but Eddy Pineiro misses wide left from 41-yards out.

Christian McCaffrey could be a problem for the 49ers today if this game stays close.

1:37 Teven Coleman with a great catch over the top of a Panthers defender for a gain of 30. Jimmy Garoppolo was drilled as he let that pass go.

1:44 The 49ers offensive line puts an end to the drive. Mike McGlinchey is called for getting downfield to wipe out a 16-yard completion which would have put them on the Panthers four. On third down Jaylon Moore is beat by Brian Burns for a sack.

Robbie Gould hits from 49-yards out to give the 49ers a 10-0 lead.

1:48 Great coverage by the 49ers defense on first down leads to a Mayfield sack by Talanoa Hufanga. On the next play Mayfield with a dime to Robbie Anderson to beat the coverage of Charvarius Moore for a gain of 32.

Jimmie Ward is OUT with a hand injury.

1:52 Illegal contact called on Emmanuel Moseley. Easy one to see. 49ers get a break on the next play with a holding called on the Panthers left tackle.

1:57 Panthers get the ball to the 49ers 25 and Pineiro doesn’t miss this time, hitting from 43-yards out to make it 10-3.

2:04 Facing third and five, Jimmy Garoppolo is forced to get the ball out quickly and Brandon Aiyuk is unable to track it while spinning around. Not the best placement by Garoppolo.

San Francisco downs the punt at the Carolina seven.

2:08 Akeem Spence starts this series off at defensive tackle for the 49ers. Chases down the running back to make the tackle on a screen after a gain of six on second down.

2:09 DeMeco Ryans sends pressure on third down and Baker Mayfield is forced to throw it away. That’s the second three and out for the 49ers defense today.

San Francisco will take over with good field position at their own 46.

2:20 Carolina blocks the 42-yard field goal. Another blown opportunity for points by the 49ers offense.

San Francisco picked up 23 yards on the ground to open the possession. Jimmy Garoppolo then throws a pair of incompletions before hitting Kittle for five on third and ten to set up the field goal try.

2:25 With the offense struggling, Emmanuel Moseley steps up and scores for them from 41-yards out after picking off a Baker Mayfield overthrow. 49ers 17 Panthers 3.

2:32 The 49ers defense holds. San Francisco goes in at the half up 17-3. As long as the 49ers hold on to the ball this game is over.

2:45 San Francisco’s kickoff team allows a 45-yard return to open the second half. A couple of quick completions by Baker Mayfield and the Panthers are already at the 49ers 28.

2:51 Carolina goes for it on fourth down and Christian McCaffrey scores from 19-yards out.

Matt Rhule decides to go for two, and the 49ers defense comes up with the stop. 49ers 17 Panthers 9

3:07 The San Francisco offense opens the second half with one of its best drives of the year. They go 75 yards on 10 plays, finishing it off with a four-yard touchdown from Garoppolo to Samuel.

They had two big plays back-to-back to make it happen. Kyle Shanahan decided to go for it on fourth and three leading to a Carolina pass interference. On the next play, Garoppolo hit Jauan Jennings over the middle and the wideout weaved his way through the Panthers defense for a gain of 32.

49ers 24 Panthers 9

3:10 Carolina with its second big kickoff return of the day, this one going for 48. A Mayfield pass to Smith over Deommodore Lenoir goes for 31 and sets the Panthers up inside the 49ers 20.

3:13 The 49ers defense holds, and Carolina settles for a short field goal. 49ers up by twelve, 24-12.

3:24 The third quarter comes to a close with the 49ers in Panther’s territory.

3:29 Jeff Wilson Jr. finishes the 12 play, 75 yard drive off with a one-yard touchdown run. Wilson has 97 yards on 16 carries today. This is the best he’s looked since 2020. 49ers lead 30-12.

4:00 The 49ers defense nearly records a safety. They had Mayfield in the endzone, but he was able to escape until Drake Jackson wrapped him up for a sack at the four.

4:14 49ers win 37-15.

  1. Should be apparent to all on this blog by now that KS is not a good head coach and certainly not an offensive mastermind. Next year Sean Payton should be brought in as the new head coach, Vic Fangio named the defensive coordinator(after Ryans departs), and Payton given his own pick as offensive coordinator. The 49ers roster is much too deep to allow the hapless Shanahan to abuse our players and muck things up any longer. We should be 4-0 right now. Sorry but that’s just how I feel after six years of his nonsense and the start of what better be a give me game. Over and out.

    1. I agree with Old Coach. Maybe next year or the year after. I don’t think we need a new coach. We need to reestablish our identity as a run first team. Afterwards stop drafting and trading for injury prone players.

  2. Dammit! Nobody wants to see Tevin Coleman! Get his butt off the field and get Mason in there.

Just great, first time in forever that Kyle remembers his $16 million TE can be used as a receiver and that idiot fumbles it away.

  3. I may not want to see Coleman running, but that was a hell of a catch.

Jimmy on the other hand is throwing a ton of dead ducks up there. Just a matter of time before one gets picked off.

  4. No more turnovers
Long drives to keep the defenders subbing for Arik and Javon fresh later in the game

  5. Man this offense is so frustrating! Are we even gonna score a TD outside the first scripted plays?!

    1. I missed the first touchdown but it seemed quick and I wonder if we have went back to the plays we ran on the first drive.

      1. I could be wrong but most of our TDs in the 1st half have come in the scripted plays. Just frustrating…

  6. 2 pick sixes in 2 weeks. As Jim Rome would say ” PHE – NOM-in-nal ”
2 blocked FGs in 3 weeks. We need to fix this immediately.

  7. Wow! Terrible play call, and lucky penalty?

Now Jennings doing his Deebo impersonation.

    Get that TD now!

  8. This is been a mediocre defensive effort today, and they are playing pretty sloppy right now.

  9. 1. We pretty much dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball despite all of the injuries. YPC Niners 5.5 , Panthers 2.2 .
    2. I dont get why Mosley was still in the game in the 4th. Why not let the young guys get some reps in a game which was clearly in control.
    3. Coleman played well and had a great reception but why not let Mason get some reps in the 4th quarter.
    4. Special teams are not playing well. 2 long kick returns today and 2 blocked FGs in 3 games.
    5. Rams / seahawks lose. Niners are in first place.
    6. Greenbrier and then ATL . We have to get healthy before the Chiefs week 7.

  10. The 9ers win 37-15.
Reading the comments one would believe they just scraped by…
Come on, gang enjoy the game, enjoy your team.

    1. Some people are just naturally negative.

To all the “anti fans”, enjoy the win and quit your bitching.

      1. David,
        Ha! Yes, you’re right.
But the important thing here is what does allie have to say about the game, lol. Jk.

        1. Waiting for 49JaxsonReasons to chime in with all his negative takes. Not a peep from him/her/they after last weeks win.

          1. Here you go David. Kyle Shanahan is a bust. Plain and simple. Did you ever see this number of injuries under Walsh? Seifert? Harbaugh? Hell no! Kyle’s a bust, I tell you. A bust. And the Niners will never win a Super Bowl while he’s coach. Period. Over and Out. Bring on Sean Payton and Vic Fangio.

          2. Some “fair weather” fans rather show up when the 49ers lose.
And even more curious, make excuses and find something to complain about when they win.
            Go figure 🫤

  11. Indeed

    Jack Hammer

I don’t think there is any fan base that talks more about “almost interceptions” than the #49ers.

  12. Emmanuel Moseley likely torn ACL and could be out for season now.

    Jimmy Ward broken hand.

    🤦🏻‍♂️
