49ers re-sign Kerry Hyder

The 49ers have added another piece to their defensive line. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, San Francisco is re-signing defensive lineman Kerry Hyder.

Bringing back Hyder is a solid move for the Niners. The veteran defensive lineman has the ability to play inside or outside, versatility the 49ers covet.

Hyder’s best work has come under the tutelage of San Francisco defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. While together in Detroit, Hyder posted eight sacks in 2016. He then struggled after moving on in free agency. Reunited in 2020, Hyder replaced an injured Nick Bosa in the 49ers lineup an finished with a career high 8.5 sacks.

After spending a season in Seattle, Hyder returned to San Francisco last season. The veteran finished with one sack to go along with a career high three passes defensed.

This article has 21 Comments

  1. We seem light on players at defensive end and outside corner. I also hope we add depth in the draft at TE and C. we need a back-up TE that can generate some offense when Kittle is out of the game.

    1. The backup TE’s only job is to get the QB killed.

Don’t believe me? Just ask Kyle.

    2. Is it official yet? Trey Lance to the Vikings for 2024 2nd and 4th round picks. If so, what a bone-headed decision on the part of Lynch and Shanahan to trade 3 1st round picks and a third for the rights to Lance. Will go down as worst draft decision in Niner history for sure.

    3. Has it happened yet? Trading Trey Lance to the Vikings for a 2nd and 4th in 2024. If so, what bone-headed decision to trade 3 1sts and a third for Lance! Will go down as the worst draft decision in 49ers history for sure.

      1. Gary,
Where have you heard this? It would really surprise me for 3 reasons. First the vikings already have Cousins. Second it would really surprise me if the 9ers traded someone this year for next years picks and lastly if the 49ers trade Lance before June 1 they have to pick up his signing bonus which would cost them Approx 9 mill on this years cap.

        1. Minneapolis paper is source & it’s being reported as strong possibility, that trade would not take place until after June 1 for cap reasons, and that Lance would benefit under the tutelage of Cousins for the coming season. Question is, are the 49ers brass as disenchanted with Lance as this article seems to suggest and willing to trade him when both Purdy and Darnold are such question marks? As I said above, if so, what a bone-headed decision it was to waste so many picks and draft him in the first place.

  2. I’ve been leaning towards trading some of our draft picks to move up for players like Cody Mauch and or Isaiah Foskey. Unlike the potential mocked players in the 3rd rd, Mauch and or Foskey could contribute right away.

Some of the mocks layed out over the past few days look very good and has almost turned my opinion of trading up. But those mocked players are more depth vs first year contributors.

Jack, one question for you. Do you think that the 49ers may give Jason Verrett one last shot?

  3. In 9 NFL Seasons Jimmy Garoppolo has been paid $125M by the Patriots and 49ers. Jimmy is fully guaranteed to earn $33M with the Raiders. If he plays out his entire contract then his career earnings will be nearly $200M. The guy looks like a movie star and is single. I hope his home address never becomes public or his driveway will look like a strip club on NBA All Star weekend.

  4. AES/Dee Phiant,
You both have been advocating for a trade up, according to drafttek if the 49ers traded two of their 3rds they would only move up to the middle of the 3rd round. If they traded all three 3rd round picks they would move up to #60 which would be the 29th pick of the 2nd round. I don’t believe that the #60 pick is worth three late 3rd rounders. That trade would also leave the 49ers with the 60th pick and no pick until the 155th pick in the middle of the 5th round. I see it being more likely that they trade one of their 3rds for a couple of 4th round picks. Possible trade partners being Carolina or Jacksonville. I could see a team wanting to jump back up at the end of the 3rd for a player they don’t believe will be there when their 4th round pick comes around. The 49ers after drafting two late 3rds may not be in love with any other players in that range but they might like a couple of players that won’t be there at 155. Anyways it is always fun to play GM this time of year, I only wish there were a few more of us to trade ideas with.

    1. OldCoach
You sir, are correct! I made that same argument a couple of weeks ago. My first mock draft I advocated for the
9ers to trade up for DT Mazi Smith, Oregon, or for IOL John Michael Schmitz, Minnesota. Since then, both have moved up into the mid 2nd Rd.
There is talent in the mid 3Rd Rd that IMO the 9ers could trade up for….S Daniel Scott California, DL Byron Young, Alabama. S Marte Mapu, Sacramento St. and EDGE Zach Harrison, Ohio State.
I also believe the 9ers could trade back a 3RD Rd Pick for players in the mid 4Th RD….IOL Andrew Vorhees, USC.
WR A.T. Perry, Wake Forest. OT Tyler Steen, Alabama and EDGE Viliami Fehoko, San Jose St. and you likely have players you would add to the list?

    2. I really like yours and GEEPS mocks. The players you guys mocked are good, but I’m not sure how much they can contribute right away.

Foskey and Mauch are projected as mid 3rd rd players who could help as rookies. It’s all conjecture right now, but very intriguing none the less.

Have you guys watched any highlights on DE, Isaiah McGuire? Some draftniks are projecting mid-late 3rd rd. He’s a player I really like.

      1. AES
RE EDGE Isaiah McGuire: I have him listed as a late 4th Rd draft pick.
Overview by Lance Zierlein, (IMO one of the top NFL talent evaluators).
An edge defender with good size and length, McGuire’s flashes of power and disruption might allow for a projection beyond what you would expect for his somewhat inconsistent tape. He struggles to hold his ground against edge blocks. His B-gap freestyles bring tackles for loss, but they also allow for massive run lanes. He’s a bulldozing power rusher who can uproot tackles and collapse pockets with forceful punch and explosive leg drive. He’ll need to get schooled up on varying his entry points and angles to keep NFL tackles guessing, but his style should translate in the league. His run defense needs work, but his size and disruption could make him a starter one day.
A candidate 9er DL Coach Kris Kocurek could fit in as a rotational player with a year of coaching and by year
        2, a starter?

        1. Coach,
If he’s there in the 4th rd he could be a gem.
Foskey is a player who might contribute as a rookie. He is the closest player to former Miami Dolphins, Jason Taylor.

Perhaps the 49ers will gamble and hope that he falls to them at 99, on the other hand, having him come in for a workout might be an indicator that they make a trade up for him.

Can’t wait to see the final results at the end of the month.

    3. OC, I think they can bundle 4-5 picks and get into the middle of the 2nd round. If they are targeting a specific player, which they always seem to do, I can see them throwing more picks at it.
Look at what they gave up to get Trey….
Niners seem to do really well with undrafted and FA players after the draft,

      1. The Niner’s also seem to do well with later round picks which is why I don’t really see them trading up. Nick Bosa and Samuel Debo have been some of the very few players the Niner’s got in higher rounds that became impact players.

  5. JACK
I was wondering why the 9er FO had not resigned DL Kerry Hyder? Do you know WHY? Was it was about money
and letting the market set the price?

    1. Before the Hyder signing I saw the 9ers drafting 2 edge players. Now I wonder if they will only draft one. I hope Hyder can return to his 2020 level, his last 2 seasons have been solid but in 2020 he was outstanding.

  6. Brock Purdy, said today in an interview that he is “not really sure, honestly” whether he will play in 2023.

  7. Weirdly enough, an edge defender with good size and length, McGuire’s flashes of power and disruption might allow for a projection beyond what you would expect for his somewhat inconsistent tape. He struggles to hold his ground against edge blocks…
