  1. The 49ers sharks smell blood in the New Orleans waters. Let’s send these Saints to hell! Go Niners!

  2. Pettis as a healthy scratch is a significant indictment by Shanahan of what little value Pettis currently brings to the table

  3. I wish the Niners had kept Jeff Wilson Jr active, and sat Celek. Wilson has run for TDs, and caught that game winning pass, while Celek has yet to score, or even catch a pass, this season.

  4. Running game in 3 games without Brieda: 107 yards per game.
Running game in 9 games with Brieda: 161 yards per game.

Running game in 2 games without Kittle: 2.6 ypc.
Running game in 10 games with Kittle: 4.6 ypc.

Both teams will want to run the ball to set up play action. These two teams are the among the three best teams (with Seattle) with play action this season:

However, Niners’ intense rush may mean more quick slants attempts by Brees to test the LBs and Williams.

      1. Glad that Grant picked the Saints. That strengthens my confidence in my prediction of 49ers 27-20.

Kittle smiling thinking about the back up LBs of the Saints. Manti Teo??!!
Ford and Bosa licking their chops thinking third and long……

        Go Niners!

  5. Saints defense was out on the field for 34 minutes and 85 plays last week. Look for the Niners to take the Saints soul’s late in the game….

  6. OMG – my other half is giving me nothing but static as she is in the process of decorating the house and exterior with Christmas decorations and it’s minutes to kick-off. Says, “it must be great to sit on your butt while I am working my a$$ off.”

AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I get absolutely no respect. Last nite, I sacrificed watching the balance of the LSU game and all of the Ohio State-Wisconsin match-up so she could watch 5 episodes of season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

  7. I’m most worried about the League thinking they owe the Saints something. If they let the players play, it’s a Niners win. If there are those Ahmad Brooks-esque ticky tack calls it’s the Niners by a smaller margin.

    1. So much for defensive genius Saleh & his grand schemes. Has been
given far too much credit on this blog.

  8. I don’t give Bourne enough credit for his finishing ability. So many times he’s the one catching the TD in the redzone.

  9. K’Waun Williams has been the best slot corner in the NFL this year. His run defense and tackling is so underrated.

    1. He held it to the ground before dropping it. Second his butt and hip touch the ground, it’s a touchdown.

  10. 1. I see Staley still having issues.
    2. Issues with our special teams coverage is troubling; missed tackles on kickoff and punt return coverage.

  11. Too many missed tackles today and invisible coverage. If the defense doesn’t make a stand now this may get out of hand. New Orleans is not even remotely impressed with the Niners defensive. Not sure the offense can hang with this.

Nevermind, this may already be a lost cause. Can’t imagine we can shut them down the rest of the way.

  12. Defensive lines aggressiveness is being used against them. They have to get their hands up. They don’t have time to get to Brees. He’s getting the ball out quick, stop trying to get sacks and get your hands up.

On offense, Jimmy has to be ready to carry the load. Everyone will sell out to stop the run. Here’s the time for him to prove himself.

But right now, Brees is carving our defense. I’d like to know how quick he’s getting the ball out

    1. Very true about the Niners’ defense. The quick passes aren’t going to give the Niners time to reach the quarterback. This is going to be a shootout.

In hindsight, my B-/C+ grade on the Sanders trade is woefully wrong.

        1. What a play by Bosa! Gets tackled and still makes the play to finally get the D off of the field.

  13. Ford re-aggravated hamstring injury; questionable. Bosa with a knee injury, but back in. A lot of missed tackles.

  14. Saleh better figure something out quick… what an embarrassing defensive performance today :/ Not one Saints punt yet…

  15. What happened to sf will be all over Brees?
News flash, qbs that get rid of the ball quickly… are hard to sack.

    1. I don’t know that he’s necessarily had to get rid of the ball that quickly. Fact is, they’re just playing better ball right now.

  16. Grant, you called it on Jared Cook vs Marcell Harris potentially being a factor to this game.

I didn’t anticipate special teams being such a factor.

I also didn’t anticipate our defense would struggle this much. Hopefully they’re just off to a slow start.

Fortunately Jimmy G and the passing game are playing lights out!

This is gonna be a barnstormer. Go Niners!

  17. Saints are gonna drop at least 40, maybe 50+ pts on the niners, they have no clue how to stop them.

    1. One, if you are going back to that 4th down in the Ravens game, that was 4th and a long yard. That QB leap would have been way short.

  18. From an objective perspective, watching these 2 offensive genius head coaches is something to behold.

  19. I wish to give KS praise. He has wisely kept all 3 time outs for the last 2 minutes of the half.

  20. Is it my imagination or has Gould barely made all 4 extra points?? We’re in a dome! C’mon!’

      1. Exactly. The biggest advantage of Kyle’s running game is being able to work seamlessly with interchangeable pieces. This “starting RB” is pretty meaningless except for fans to argue over.

      2. The most amazing part is that committee is made up of a bunch of no-names that mostly went undrafted.

Nice knowing we won’t have to allocate such a huge chunk of the salary cap to this position, ala the Rams and Cowboys.

  21. I can’t recall ever seeing a better 49er offense in a first half of a football game……that was classic…..

    1. You must not have been alive in the 80s. We’ve been missing this brand of football for a very long time!

  22. Offense is ballin’. Payton owned Saleh in the first half, hopefully Saleh can figure it out in the second… Time to put this team away.

  23. I may be biased, but I can honestly say … that might be the best, most entertaining first half of NFL offensive football I have ever seen, spanning 37 years!

What an amazing offensive display! Wowza!!!!!

      1. Funny…in that game their best offensive weapon went out due to a concussion…..(Hitner)

In this game cook who was dominating is out with a concussion

  24. Run game should be good in the 2nd half. They can’t dare Jimmy to beat them the way he’s playing

  25. This is turning into some sort of game! Two good Ds but its been almost all offense today. For the 49ers it is big play after big play.

While the 49ers D is struggling to get stops, Bosa has been an absolute beast. He’s creating havoc on most plays, and any good play for the D has involved him in some way.

I think this will come down to who blinks first.

    1. Shades of the 2011 playoff game? I expect Niners D to continue tightening up in the second half.

  26. I hope sf can get a few picks… perhaps run some interior blitzes when Drew Brees is in. Perhaps that would keep him from stepping into his throws.

  27. The difference to me is, it seems to me like KS has completely flummoxed the NO defense. They don’t know what to expect.

The Niners D hasn’t been caught off guard, it’s just that the NO offense has executed better than the Niners D, up to this point. I expect that to change.

  28. That was a terrible pass by Jimmy. Had all the time in the world and made Sanders go full extension and still couldn’t reach it.

    1. Sorry, but it hit him in the hands. Tipped passes over the middle almost always get intercepted. Sanders is a vet. I put that on him.

    2. Watch that replay again, Sanders was fully extended and barely got his fingertips on the ball. That’s on Jimmy!

  29. Good job by D to hold them to a FG. Btw, I think Sanders would say he should’ve hauled in that pass.

  30. Dee Ford should just sit out until the playoffs. As he gets better work on running sprints in practice. No need in continuing to aggravate it.

  31. Once again, why is KS force feeding us Coleman. Mostert and Breida should be getting all of the carries.

    1. That wasn’t on Coleman. Richburg got injured and was literally ran over on the play which collapsed the pocket. Wouldn’t have mattered who was running the ball.

      1. Even so, I don’t think he should be running it there anyway. Coleman probably worst of the three.

  32. I’m just hoping Shanny gets these more questionable plays out of his system before the post season. Zero reason for Coleman to run the ball given how Mostert is playing.

    1. What a play by Last Chance U to force the turnover. Great job by the O turning that into 7.

  33. Nothing wrong with the defensive scheme. See the difference when the players execute on the field?

  34. Why doesn’t he continue to roll out? If you’re going to hold onto the ball at least attempt to give yourself more time.

  35. The center calls all the pass protection on the line. Losing Richburg is a huge blow and it showed on that sequence.

  36. The refs are trying to give the game to the Saints.
    .
Blatant face mask, holding every play. Defender turns his back on Kittle, and the refs call a block in the back.
    .
Niners have to win despite the refs.

      1. Speak for yourself. The refs finally flagged the Saints, deep in the third quarter. I watch replays.

  37. Our offensive tackles got bailed out by the defensive holding. They really need to do better.

  38. Grant said: 8:43 LT Joe Staley is inactive. Who is that wearing Staley’s jersey??

  39. Awesome! They needed that bIg time.

These head shot penalties are so tough, that defender did everything right, it was not humanly possible to avoid that hit.

  40. Grant you taking credit for Jimmy throwing the ball away on that drive?

    Saints hurting themselves with penalties.

    Good drive

  41. Offense has been on fire today… time for the D to pull a Justin Smith and put the nails in the coffin.

  42. Can’t wait to here from the Jimmy detractors, you know, Grant and his loyal A$$ kissing herd ( you know who you are lol), after this one. However it turns out, this game is on the D. Jimmy and the offense have done more than enough.

    1. 9 point game. Go for two and fail and Saints can tie it with one score. Not smart with 9 mins left in the 4th.

  43. Refs gotta keep them in the game… next play Sherman gets blocked in the back on the big pass with no call just to rub it in.

    1. Sherman had a handful of jersey past 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. Textbook holding.

    1. Witherspoon has been fine today. One play he gets out-muscled by the best receiver in the NFL, and suddenly we need to bench him…smh. And by the way, Williams is out, so Moseley is already in the game and not available to replace Witherspoon. You can keep Dontae Johnson on the bench.

  44. Time to do to the Saints what the Ravens did to us last week. Let’s see KS put this #2 rushing offense to good use.

  45. Oh man. What a game. This is a true nail biter. Defense, pleeeeease don’t lose this game!

  46. Embarrassing output today from defence. Don’t think it’s really on Salah either. It looks like mostly execution.

Well, let’s see if offence can oull this one out of the hat somehow.

        1. I wonder if some of those whiffed tackles might be a result of players not wanting to be flagged for leading with their helmets. It seems like on those whiffs they seem to be holding back and not being aggressive. Niners missed a lot of tackles in this game.

  47. Where’s Ribico??? Well, what do you think of that defensive genius Saleh now???
Has been so darn overrated by this blog for so long.

    1. Every player and coach deserves a mulligan sometime. The good thing is that this game might affect his head coach perspectives and that works for the NIners.

    1. yup, a bunch of weak-hearted and weak-willed fans show up on game days looking for a chance to bash the players and the coaches,

      1. For some crazy reason, I thought they were going to win it even before that key fourth downplay.

    1. Same, I think I’ve just lost most of my lifespan into the 70’s with that game. Well, I can worry about that in 50 years give or take lmao. Totally worth it kek

    1. Let’s not forget his efforts in 2017. He played some very good ball that first season. While they did not have the impact that this game had, those wins were responsible for the Niners signing him. He also played a few really good games this season as well. We just need to see some consistency out of him as he exhibited during the 2017 streak.

  48. Their dream scenario of challenging Jimmy to beat them, turned into a nightmare…… GO NINERS!!!

  49. Best game I’ve seen in ages. That was one for the books.

And I’m now going to drink myself to sleep after that one.

  50. WHAT A FREAKING GAME. WHAT A FREEAAAAAKING GAME.

One of the best I’ve ever seen I think. Defence was super rough but who gives a sh1t. Jimmy got it done, KITTLE got it done and Gould with the buzzer beater. This offence is elite. Wow, just wow. Jimmy back in the dark horse MVP talk? Heh

  51. Finally on the correct end of a close game against another elite team. Great game, I really didn’t know if they had it in them to win a shootout. This team is maturing rapidly.

Now if we could just do something about all these guys going down to injury.

  52. 4 & 2 Jimmy G to Kittle CLUTCH!!!!!
    FUC* YEAH!!!!!!
    Hoferfan67 is happy right now!!!
GQ Jimmy pulled it out!!! He needed that! CLUTCH!!!

    1. Best game Jimmy has played as a Niner, but credit goes to Kittle for pulling it out. That clutch play was 99 % George Kittle. Jimmy was great though out the game except during the last drive. He did complete that pass to George, but why do you credit JG for being clutch on that last series and pulling it out. Completing on pass out of 4 is not that clutch. You forget Georges unworldy play. If George does not make that play the ending is probably different This is what ticks me off about you Jimmy fans. I want Jimmy to do well and when he does so he deserves credit, but guys like you give Jimmy credit for completing a short pass to George after 3 not so great incompletions and totally ignore the super effort by George. You guys give Jimmy credit forever good play in the passing game. You are the reason that I try to keep things objective. Give Jimmy credit for playing a really great game but lets leave the Clutch definition reserved for Kittle.

      1. Naw, JG also had that long pass on the first play from scrimmage, after NO scored, that changed the momentum of the game.
        .
JG was dropping dimes, and is in no way responsible for that pick. That was all on Sanders, who also was clutch most of the day. On that first pass to Sanders, JG did not hit a window, he threaded the needle.
        .
I think several players were clutch, but you can disagree with me.

      2. Objective? Lol. That stat about leading the league in TD passes the last x games not consistent enough for you? Get out of here.

  53. What a game…. offense saved the day when Witherspoon and the D tried to give it away… great win from a team full of heart.

  54. HELL YES!!

    1. Emotional roller coaster the last 3 minutes with near Witherspoon pick then Saints TD
    2. Jimmy G is a top 5 QB. He is clutch .
    3. Bourne is moving into the unsung hero group. He is a very valuable member of the receiving corps as both a WR and blocker.
    4. I am concerned about the injuries to Seconary.
    5. Huge game for Bosa yet no sacks. Just looking at sacks stat doesn’t tell near the complete story and frankly is pretty lazy analysis.
    6. Let’s go Rams

  55. That Kittle 4th down conversion and refusal to go down will forever remain in 49ers lore.

      1. Good tactic to grab his facemask. If he doesn’t George goes for the score. The facemask is what slowed George enough to allow the help to get there to finally get him down.

  56. Oh, life is good. The Niners prevailed , despite the refs blatantly trying to give the game to the Aints.
    .
I said this was going to be a dogfight, not a blowout.
    .
JG was clutch, and so was Kittle.
    .
Juan, I think your over was covered. ;p

  57. Shanny called a great game, Jimmy and the offense are starting to peak at the perfect time.

  58. The rookie 4th round pick that everyone keeps saying should’ve been the pick did a great job today in the 4th quarter for the 49ers.

Terrific win. 2-1 in this stretch with wins over GB and NO is exactly what the doctor ordered.

  59. What. A. Game!

Man, Kittle is something else. When they needed a big play boy did he deliver. Great game by JG as well.

Massive victory. Not just for what the win means, but also the way they won. Surely any debate about whether JG can put the game on his arm is over now.

    1. He was Jimmy G 2017 vintage today. Need to see him continue that play the remainder of the season and playoffs.

  60. Heh, just looking through some of the posts people made during the game. Lol! Riding the roller coaster today.

    1. Another win, but losing Richburg for the year would make it bittersweet. Let’s hope for the best.

  61. Grant blew the prediction but we forgive him. I might have predicted the same way. Saints are tough in the dome.

  62. I wish to commend KS, and his masterful use of his time outs. They helped him win this game.

  63. A great victory beating a great team and beating a great coach.

A wonderful day to be a 49er fan!

  64. My ex is a fanatical Saints fan, so as a supporter since 1981, there is no doubt double sweetness to this victory !…

The Saints always whine about the refs calls, then in the final seconds try to remove Kittles face via a facemask in FRONT OF THE REF. Hmmmmm. I assume they will feel cheated that the facemask was called. :-)

    1. The Niners were also hit with a shoulder pad to the head that kept a drive alive in the First Quarter.

They also didn’t call a helmet to helmet hit against George kittle. But because George’s head didn’t fly back they figured Superman could take it.

  65. Seb they hit all your points. Time outs, flea flicker, jet sweep, roll out. Only missed the fake fall down and then get up play. Well done! :)

    1. Juan , did you get your first bet? I think you called Niners plus 2?
      .
      If you did, mucho gratz.

      1. Yessir! Got both! 4-0 this morn. Had the Ravens -6 1/2 and the under (41) plus both Niner bets. My fifth is Tenn -3 at Oak. Could be a sweep!! Fill those coffers!! Ok I’ll give you that but next time they have to fall down before the pass is thrown! :)

      1. Thats right, where is that guy? If true to form, he should be yappin all day about how the Saints got robbed, etc, etc.

  66. Bosa played hard! He deserves a lot of credit! He was ballin!!! The pressure on Brees and the pass deflection on that big 3rd down play.

  67. “The four-touchdown effort puts Garoppolo with Steve Young and Jeff Garcia as the only Niners quarterbacks to have at least three games with four or more touchdowns in a season.”

    1. Definitely the best QB we’ve had in a long time and will only get better with experience… his haters are truly clueless but no surprise there.

  68. Man I swear this is the most fun, and entertaining Niners team ever! Jimmy G and KS are meant for each other! Both are high risk high reward! KS should have run the ball instead of dong that play action play and Jimmy G takes a sack. They had control of the game and he can’t hep but do goofy stuff. Still, it was good to see Jimmy G face a 4th and 2 and make a throw.
To come back like they did shows character….

  69. What a game! This is the best game I’ve seen the NINERS play so far. Some thoughts…

    1) Great game called by Shanahan….he tried to get cute in the penultimate drive but…bailed out by JG/Kittle. Great adjustment after losing Richberg.
    2) Mostert & Deebo had 100 yd scrimmage games. Mostert had another unreal 7 ypc!
    3) Sanders trade looks so good now. Kudos to Lynch.
    4) Really impressed with the next man up mentality of this team.
    5) Good wake up call for Shanahan and the D. So many missed tackles…..looked like a sieve out there.
    6) Kittle is easily the MVP of this team.

  70. Jimmy went Toe to Toe with Drew Brees and came out Victorious!
Kittle is a bad man!! Armstead & Bosa were ballin!!!!
I almost threw down with some big-mouth Saints fans in the bar I was at.
I planted the fake flag in their faces after Robbie made the kick! Just like Bosa did vs Browns ?…. I thought was going to get jumped & get my butt kicked, I was way out numbered & my buddy is only 5-8 160…

    1. You are die hard faithful Niner fan. The Niners and us fans earned the right to plant that flag.

      1. Seb – yes sir ?
How about Mostert? He keeps getting better and better…He is a special talent…the rest of the nation has no clue who he is. That will change soon!

        1. Mostert has an insane 7 yard average. Guaranteed first down every 2 plays. Glad KS us running him, and not Coleman so much.
          .
Not bad for an UDFA who went to 7 teams. ;p

    2. With a win like this, might have been ok to take a couple punches and kicks.
I can see you smiling in slow mo , while getting the boots out to you. ??
Glad nothing stupid like that happened.
I usually roll deep with friends and takeover bars if I ever head to one for a game.
      I bring flags and everything.

      1. MD – I lost my cool on the flag spike, I was too pumped up, acted stupid…I may have had a heart attack if Robbie missed that kick…the Saints group was gonna go nuts, I was ready for the worst…Need the Lambs to win tonight.
        Go LA!! ?
        Mostert is a beast!!!

  71. A last minute FG away from going 3-0 over the toughest 3 game stretch in modern day NFL history (or whatever) … I’ll take it.

  72. K’Waun Williams with concussion; Sherman had a hamstring injury. Sherman could be out next 2 weeks.

  73. I would have been happy if the Niners had won by one point. Since they won by 2, I am twice as happy.
    .
The Niners proved they are legit, and a force to be reckoned with.
    .
Now, if only they could win out…….

Jimmy Garoppolo led a fourth quarter comeback to win a shootout, on the road against a future HOF quarterback, with 349 yards and four touchdowns. No more boxes left to check.

    No sh!t…

  75. I guess the “game manager” silliness can be put to rest. You know, “where the rubber meets the road”.

  76. On a road trip…caught fragments of the game on radio–fragments at best. Great win!

Can’t wait for the blueprint(s) to be revealed…

    1. Before the game, did you notice Grant’s choice of the Saints to win was drowned out by the noise of millions of Robot Moron Fans (RMF) rejoicing?

  77. Interesting dilemma.
    What would you rather see?

-Seahawks win tonight and the Niners clinch a playoff spot, or,
-Rams win and the Niners take over 1st in division but are still not a playoff team , yet!

  78. One reason why I thought the Niners would win- They wanted this game more.
    ,
Cant wait for Grant’s grades. Bet he will not be kind to the DBs.

Jimmy Garoppolo in the #49ers’ win over the Saints:
    26 of 35 (74%), 349 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception, 10 yards/attempt, 131.7 QB rating

It’s also worth noting that Garoppolo’s pick was a drop/tip turned turnover. Otherwise, a near-perfect game for the franchise quarterback.
