49ers sign Malik Tuner

With Deebo Samuel apparently unhappy with how his contract negotiations are moving, the 49ers added another wide receiver to their roster.

San Francisco announced on Monday the signing of former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Malik Turner to a one-year contract.

Turner played collegiately at the University of Illinois, where he appeared in 46 games (35 starts) and registered 143 receptions for 1,804 yards and ten touchdowns.

Turner signed with the Seattle Seahawks after going undrafted in 2018. After two seasons in Seattle, he spent the last two seasons in Dallas.

Turner has appeared in 41 games (three starts) and registered 29 receptions for 414 yards and four touchdowns for his career. Turner also has 505 snaps on special teams, 500 of which have come over his last three seasons.

The possible fit for Turner in San Francisco will be to compete for a position on special teams, replacing Trent Sherfield on the coverage units while also getting snaps down the wide receiver depth chart.

San Francisco now has nine wide receivers under contract for 2022, with Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Ray-Ray McCloud likely locks to make the roster. That leaves two remaining spots to be filled by Turner, Marcus Johnson, KeeSean Johnson, Austin Mack, or Conor Wedington.

Don’t rule out the possibility of San Francisco adding another wide receiver through the draft. The 49ers have a history of filling their roster holes through free agency, which allows them to focus on the best players available at multiple positions with each selection.

  1. Why are we even discussing, possibly trading Deebo? Like why is this happening and Jimmy G is still on the team. I don’t like how this off-season is going.

  2. Sign Deebo now! I don’t see how they can lose his production and be taken seriously for the postseason. Aiyuk will be double-teamed on each play.

    1. An ex Jets’ scout is saying New York needs to do everything in its power to make a trade for DS. He says if the 49ers (i.e., the Yorks) do not want to show Samuel the financial respect his performance warrants, then New York needs to. Surely, Saleh knows this and does not have to be told.

IF DS leaves thanks to that accomplished triad of Lynch, Paraag and especially the Yorks, forget TL and the offense. Deebo was, and is, the offense. There’s no replacing him. And by now, you should recognize this, Jed.

      1. I don’t think York or Paraag are stumbling blocks. Lynch and Shanahan have to deal with cap. They have to decide how much they want to spend on that position at the expense of other positions. Hopefully it all works out but there becomes a point where draft picks in a trade are worth more than a player asking for too much.

  3. These rumors about Deebo not being happy with contract negotiations is not encouraging. I would sure hate to lose him but I’m sure the Niners have a top number and if that isn’t satisfactory to Deebo then we have a problem.

  4. Seems pretty obvious to me the 49ers can’t do anything about giving Deebo and Bosa new contracts until the Jimmy G situation is resolved. They simply don’t have the cap space. All of this off season drama is simply sound and fuy signifying nothing. Having said that, I know this is sacrilege to most 49er fans but if the team can get Tyreek Hill type compensation in return for Deebo I wouldn’t be all that upset. Five draft picks: 1st Round, 2nd Round, 4th Round, plus a 4th and 6th Rounder next year. That’s a haul. Deebo’s injury history is a concern so locking up that much cap space on him is a bit scary. Plus I’m pretty disappointed Deebo has chosen not to go work out with Trey Lance this offseason. New QB, all the other WRs working out with him but Deebo is busy in Miami updating his social media accounts. Deebo is obviously a great player with a unique skill set that is unmatched in the NFL. In my opinion, the 49ers are in a win/win situation. Work it out with Deebo and you have a great player. Don’t work it out with Deebo and you have massive compensation when you trade him.

  5. Guarantied money is cash up front that has to be put into escrow to be paid to the player when each guarantied step comes due. For the York’s that money is then out of their control. The 49ers are one of the better teams in their use of guaranteed money.

Kittle’s negotiation was contentious until it became time for him to put his health at risk and start doing physical football the first day of training camp. Then both sides found common ground. The pandemic rules for the NFL that year prevented any earlier team training. Deebo doesn’t have that protection from injury. Deebo want’s a contract before he participates in any physical team activities.

With the loopholes in cap rules, any NFL team can get under the cap if they want a given player enough. The 49ers can make cap moves to extend Deebo and Nick and they don’t have to increase their “Deebo/Nick” cap hit for 2022.
