49ers to sign Masoli

The 49ers will sign former Oregon Duck and Ole Miss Rebel Jeremiah Masoli, reports Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

If this is true, this is a departure from the 49ers pattern of signing  “character guys.” As Carmen Policy once put it, the 49ers like to do things with “class.”

Masoli, the 5’11 220 lb. San Francisco native has gotten in trouble with the law three times. In 2005 when he was in high school he went to Juvenile hall for three months in San Mateo for a burglary. In 2010 he was suspended from U of Oregon for second-degree burglary with regards to stolen laptops from a fraternity.

Six months later he was pulled over and cited for driving without a license.

As of now, Masoli is not a character guy.

But he’s a very talented quarterback. I watched him at Oregon and Ole Miss and I was always impressed.

Signing him seems more like a Raiders move – upgrading talent regardless of character.

But I like the move. Masoli is much better than David Carr or Troy Smith, and a football team is not a group of choir boys.

Maybe the 49ers can give Masoli his own laptop.
