49ers vs. Browns: Preview, prediction, what to watch for

An inside look at Sunday’s Browns-49ers week 6 matchup at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland.

Marquee Matchup

Kyle Shanahan’s offense vs. Jim Schwartz’ defense

In baseball terms, Jim Schwartz has ownage on Kyle Shanahan.

The two have met up eight times as coordinators or head coaches. Schwartz has won seven of those meetings, including six in a row. If you include their matchup in 2021 when Schwartz was a defensive assistant in Tennessee, the win streak is seven.

In their nine prior meetings Schwartz has held Shanahan to just 15.8 points per game and allowed more than 20 points just once.

The Browns defense comes into this game allowing a league low 196 yards per game, 70 fewer than Baltimore and San Francisco who have allowed 266 per contest.

“They rush the passer every play and then react to everything else,” said Kyle Shanahan when asked about the challenge of facing Clevelang. “Myles Garrett combined with Schwartz’s scheme and the guys around him, it’s a problem. It’s obvious why they’re a top defense right now.

When you have the D-Line they have, the downhill linebackers, you better have some good corners and they have very good ones. They play a lot of man-to-man coverage. They’ll mix in some zone. But, when you play that much man-to-man and you’re also the number one pass defense in the league, you’ve got to have some good corners.”

Jack’s Pick: The Cleveland defense will provide the toughest challenge to the 49ers this season.

For the Browns, their offense is a bigger issue. Cleveland will be without starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, running back Nick Chubb and left guard Joel Bitonio.

Unless San Francisco turns the ball over or doesn’t show up they will eventually wear down Cleveland and the 49ers will move to 6-0 on the season.

Four Downs

Ball Security: One thing that can nullify the 49ers talent advantage in this game is turnovers.

San Francisco has gone just 1-10 since the start of 2021 in games they have turned the ball over more than their opponents. When they don’t, the 49ers have compiled a record of 29-3.

As good as Cleveland’s defense has been through the first four weeks, they have forced just 3 turnovers. Meanwhile their offense has turned the ball over at least once in each game this season.

I can see for Myles: The Browns defense is led by pass rusher Myles Garrett. The defensive end has recorded 5.5 of Cleveland’s 12 sacks and hit the opposing quarterback 13 times.

Garrett moves around the formation, but 121 of his 166 snaps have come while lined up on the right side of the defense. If this pattern holds on Sunday, Garrett will spend most of the day working against All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams. The veteran left tackle has allowed just four pressures and four hurries on 162 pass blocking snaps.

Mr. Irrelevant: With a win on Sunday, Brock Purdy would have the second most consecutive wins to begin a career in NFL history with 11. The record is currently held by former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Been Roethlisberger who won his first 15 starts.

The second-year quarterback has broken several records this season and could pass another in Cleveland.

Purdy has gone 236 passes since throwing an interception in the third quarter of a 49ers win over Las Vegas on January 1. He is just 14 passes away from breaking Alex Smith’s franchise record of 249 passes.

Cleveland’s lone interception this season came when safety Grant Delpit picked off Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett in the first quarter of a 26-22 loss.

All-Pro Fred: Fred Warner has recorded 674 tackles in his career. He needs just two tackles on Sunday to move ahead of NaVorro Bowman for the fourth most tackles in franchise history.

Warner will have ample opportunity against a run heavy Cleveland offense.

The Browns 32.8 rushing attempts per game is tied for fourth most in the league.

Cleveland lost star running back Nick Chubb for the season with a knee injury during their week 2 loss at Pittsburgh. Over the last two games they have turned to Pierre Strong, Jerome Ford and Kareem Hunt and averaged just 3.1 yards per rush attempt.

  1. Aaron Donald. Micah Parsons. TJ Watts. The 49ers have dealt with some elite DE’s. And now Myles Garrett. If we slow him down, that’s half the battle against their defense. They also have a tough cornerback. Just keep doing what we doing and we can go 6-0.

  2. K,
TJ Watt? They didn’t deal with him very well. I have a feeling that Shwartz may learn a lesson from the Cowboys. Instead of feeding Parsons a steady diet of McKivitz they moved him all over their front and that strategy failed miserably. I can see Shwartz learning from that and instead of lining Garrett up on the right side of the D 75% of the time he will line him up over McKivitz all most every snap. My prediction for the game is 14-7 49ers. If they don’t turn the ball over and give up less than 3 sacks I see the 9ers getting their first shutout of the year. imho

    1. This is the “Crucible” game for McKivitz, — Schwartz now has enough game film from this (still young) season to figure how to get the right side of the OL to crack — Foerster and Kyle will need to get things figured out — but, as I’ve said in a previous post, always happy to be wrong…

Kyle’s Game planning has been pretty good so far this season, minimizing OL weaknesses / playing to their strengths — hope it continues this Sunday…

Hoping for 70/30 split of run/pass with more of more snaps for other RBs so McCaffrey gets some rest, and is used more in the passing game – and I’m fine with low scoring as long as we win and avoid major injuries…

    2. OC:

My understanding is that the 49ers offense continually frustrated Parsons with a combination of double teams and chipping – which is something they didn’t seem to do against TJ Watt. A good strategic plan would seem to be doing the same thing to Garrett that they did to Parsons.

  3. Old Coach, Tjf, and Cubus. You all have valid points. And if they try to move Myles Garrett around to fool us it won’t work. Wilkes has proven to be a pretty good – and smart – DC following in Saleh and Ryan’s footsteps. I don’t know how the weather will be in Cleveland by the lake, but we have been through it before. I bet there will be a lot of Niner Faithful in Cleveland. We really support our team.

    1. You all have been bamboozled. Jack Hammer’s real name is Jeff Patterson. Look up what he did. The former football coach at sobrato high. This pig as an educator took advantage of a 17 year old girl who was struggling with mental issues and made her give him oral sex. Do not support this swine. It’s time we protest and get rid of him from the blog.

        1. Jeff Patterson received no jail time and no consequences for grooming a child who was struggling. He then belittled and blamed her at sentencing. He then asked for leniency because his wife was about to give birth. This is a despicable person,. Jeff Patterson is finally exposed for who he is (a predator) and what he has done. Good riddance.

  4. First I heard about the baseball term “ownage” but my kids say I’m out of touch. I have my own baseball term – Coming up against Swartz, KS is due.

    1. Is this the end of the PDs blog. After losing Grant the blog has never come back as strong. I am curious how many bloggers will continue posting here and how many will not post anymore. If the site is dead can anyone recommend other sites that are as technoligically simple as this one?

      1. OC, Where did that Q come from?
Jack is doing a way better job than his predecessor but he doesn’t put out click-bait to antagonize people.
Things go in cycles and the feisty or vibrant blog (depending on who’s talking) was attracting a lot of and vitriol. Some amusing, some annoying. Good ole sebbie was a major irritant to many with his continuous plethora of dubious facts and fiction. He made such a spectacle out of himself that he looked like he owned the blog. He turned into a cantankerous curmudgeon who was constantly battling his own paranoid demons that he had to remove himself.
Now that was a lot of clicks lost. And a lot of amusement.
Others left and started their own blog, forgot the name
Somebody else will come along and stir the pot. Mark my words.
In the meantime I’m enjoying Jack’s insights!

        1. ohoh, Just read the post about Jeff Patterson, I guess that’s what you were referring to OC?
          I hope it’s not true

        2. The blog was dead for quite awhile before Jack took over. Razor started a new blog and took a lot of the regulars with him. It takes time to build back up but I think Jack is doing a hell of a job so over time he’ll attract more people. Be patient.

      2. You should give the blog a shot Old Coach!

I’ve been on NinerNation off and on since 2008. The content is hit and miss.

  5. I can’t judge a guy over something that happened 20 years ago and for which he has served his time. I’m surprised that the PD claims not to have known about it since GC has alluded to the fact that Jack did something. I always thought it was alcohol/drugs related.
I don’t understand why a person is not allowed to redeem themself and change for the better. As far as I know Jack changed for the better and was on the way to become one of the better beat writers. Jack sure looked like he found his niche.
If we don’t want people to better themselves we should keep them locked up instead of giving them the illusion that they have paid their dues!

  6. I just learned that Jack was terminated. Very sorry to hear that and now this blog is probably dead. I think the PD is very wrong in firing him. The crime happened almost 20 years ago and he did his time. When does he get to move on with his life? I was always suspect about the name Jack Hammer but I heard on one of his blogs where he professed it was his given name, now I understand why.

  7. Terminating Jack Hammer for something he did 17 years ago, and paid dearly for that, is so meanspirited. He is the best reporter of all on the 49ers! And it was a girl just under the legal age! His writings show a very supportive and loving father.
I feel very sad for Jack being dragged through the mud over this. I will certainly continue to follow Jack, but not the PD.

    1. Agreed. I’m sick of this cancel culture stuff. In this state you can commit robbery and other crimes and get away Scott free, but then you can get fired many years later for because you committed the wrong crime. PD sucks.
I hope Jack doesn’t give up but maybe he’d be better off, packing up and getting out of this state.

  8. Kyle Shanahan acknowledges the challenge of facing the Cleveland Browns’ defense, particularly due to their strong pass-rushing abilities led by Myles Garrett. Shanahan also praises the Browns’ cornerbacks, noting their effectiveness in playing man-to-man coverage, which contributes to their status as the number one pass defense in the league.
