SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the 49ers Week 7 game against the undefeated Los Angeles Rams. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

12:51 Here are the 49ers inactives:

  1. CB Richard Sherman.
  2. CB Jimmie Ward.
  3. WR Dante Pettis.
  4. OG Joshua Garnett.
  5. DT Jullian Taylor
  6. OT Shon Coleman.
  7. NT D.J. Jones.

12:53 Here are the Rams inactives:

  1. WR Cooper Kupp.
  2. RB John Kelly.
  3. RB Justin Davis.
  4. C Brian Allen.
  5. DB Darious Williams.
  6. DT Sebastian Joseph-Day.
  7. DT Tanzel Smart.

1:11 Why do you think Sherman chose to sit out today? I think he didn’t want to risk getting exposed by the Rams speed receivers. He gets a bonus if he makes the Pro Bowl.

1:23 The 49ers win the toss and defer. The Rams will receive the opening kickoff.

1:24  With Sherman and Ward out, Rams head coach Sean McVay must be careful not to get greedy and pass heavy.

1:25 The Niners secondary cannot play too much man coverage with Witherspoon and those other back up corners covering the vertical threats the Rams. Saleh must adjust his defensive call sheet and go to more Cover 2 and 2 Man shells to protect the corners.

1:27 On third-and-1, Jared Goff fumbles the snap and recovers just as Cassius Marsh sacks him for an eight-yard loss. The Rams go three-and-out. After the punt, the 49ers get the ball at their 30-yard line.

1:29 Matt Breida injures himself on the first play of the drive. It was a two-yard run. He walks off the field slowly.

1:35 On second-and-16 from the 49ers 45, C.J. Beathard scrambles, gets sacked, fumbles and the Rams recovers. Didn’t take long for Beathard to commit his first turnover of the game.

1:39 On third-and-2 from the 49ers 17, Todd Gurley drops a pass in the left flat. The Rams make a 35-yard field goal, and lead 3-0. Good stand by the 49ers defense after the offense handed the Rams terrific field position.

1:48 On third-and-11, McGlinchey gives up a sack to Cory Littleton, because McGlinchey failed to block down into the B gap after right guard Mike Person blocked down into the A gap. Rookie mistake. McGlinchey made the same one last week against the Packers. That sack knocked the 49ers out of field-goal range, so they punted. The Rams get the ball at their 12.

1:54 On third-and-3 from the Rams 39, Goff throws a pass right to Jaquiski Tartt but he drops it. What a missed opportunity. Still a good defensive stand. The Rams punt, and the 49ers get the ball at their 20.

1:58 Matt Breida returns to the game. He carries the ball on the first play of the drive, fumbles and the Rams recover. Two turnovers so far by the 49ers in the first quarter.

2:04 On first-and-goal from the eight, Todd Gurley cruises into the end zone. The 49ers defense gave little effort during that series. The Rams lead 10-0.

2:08 On third-and-13, Aaron Donald throws Weston Richburg into Beathard and Richburg sacks him.

2:09 Next play, Cory Littleton blocks Bradley Pinions punt, and the ball bounces through the back of the end zone for a safety. The Rams lead 12-0.

2:16 On third-and-3 from the 49ers 14, Goff completes a shovel pass to tight end Gerald Everett running across the backfield, and defensive end Ronald Blair tackles him for a five-yard loss. Good stand by the defense after another short drive by the Rams. They make a 37-yard field goal, and lead 15-0.

2:24 On third-and-13, Beathard scrambles for 13 yards, dives and fumbles, but the 49ers keep the ball because the officials rule Beathard gave himself up. Not to be deterred, Beathard throws an interception on the next play. You knew it was coming.

2:35 On first-and-10 from the 49ers 19, Goff throws a touchdown catch to Brandin Cooks, who beat Ahkello Witherspoon. The Rams lead 22-0. The 49ers didn’t come to play at home against the best team in the NFL. Shameful.

2:47 On third-and-goal from the 10 with 13 seconds left in the first half, Beathard throws a touchdown pass to George Kittle. They trail 22-7, and will receive the ball to start the second half. The 49ers are still in this game.

3:06 On first-and-10, McGlinchey gives up a sack to Aaron Donald. The 49ers go three-and-out. McGlinchey has given up four sacks the past two games.

3:07 Awful series by the offense. Kyle Shanahan scripted that drive during halftime. That’s the best he could come up with?

3:15 Free safety Adrian Colbert injures his right leg breaking up a deep pass intended for Cooks. Colbert is still down. His injury appears serious.

3:17 The 49ers drive Colbert off the field in a cart. Scary.

3:22 On third-and-2 from the 49ers 13, Gurley runs up the middle and loses a yard. Extremely conservative play call by McVay, who is taking zero risks, refusing to beat himself. What a slap in the face to the 49ers.

3:28 On third-and-1, Beathard throws to Kittle, and Rams safety John Johnson III rips the ball out of Kittle’s hands and intercepts the pass. The Rams get the ball at the 49ers 27.

3:33 Gurley scores a one-yard touchdown three plays later. The Rams lead 32-7. The 49ers quit.

3:39 On third-and-6 from the Rams 24, the Rams blitz, Beathard holds the ball and takes a sack.

3:40 Robbie Gould makes a 51-yard field goal. The 49ers trail 32-10.

3:48 On second-and-1 from the 49ers 31, Arik Armstead sacks Goff and celebrated. You would think the 49ers still were in the game. What a joke.

3:51 Richie James fair catches a punt at the 49ers 9-yard line.

4:04 The Rams return the punt to the 49ers 13. Two plays later, Goff throws a touchdown pass to Gurley, and Reuben Foster injures his surgically-repaired right shoulder during the play. The Rams lead 39-10.

4:10 On third-and-five, Weston Richburg gives up a sack to Donald. What a player.

4:11 The Rams take over from their 15. Goff is out of the game, and so is Foster.

4:15 The 49ers block the Rams punt and recover at the Rams 37.

4:19 On fourth-and-13 from the Rams 18, Beathard throws incomplete through the back of the end zone, and the Rams take over on downs.

4:24 The 49ers lose. Stay tuned for my grades and postgame Periscope report.

  1. Let’s win this one for Dwight, in similar fashion to what the Boilermakers did for Tyler. Go Niners!

  2. Would like to see plenty of Moore and Witherspoon today. Unless they struggle, then I’ll throw up my clipboard.

  3. First offensive play and Breida is down. Again. Unless they limit his carries, his career may be a short one.

  4. Your comment about Sherman was rather unnecessary Grant. From what I read, he is out due to the same injury that caused him to miss a game earlier.

        1. His calf was fine last week. Now it hurts? After a short week of walk-through practices? Uh huh.

  5. Missing my first home game this season. So TV it is.

Always trying to make a play is part of the reason Beathard has a propensity for mistakes. That, along with a failure to feel pressure, does not bode well.

But our defense seems inspired so far.

  6. They need to hold Brieda out for a while and let his ankles heal… he reinjures it every week.

  7. Beathard is gonna Beathard.
The only thing you can’t do. Take a sack, so that is what he does.

  8. if the run game/screen game is working why does KS get happy with the pass..bad in game decisions in my opinion

  9. Grant may be right about Kyle being fired at the end of this season, He has been a huge disappointment.

    1. That, will not happen… Saleh maybe; but saying Shanahan will get fired is nothing more than clickbait.

  10. And the domination begins… Breida is more worried about protecting his ankle than protecting the ball. Sit him.

  11. In what quarter will Grant announce the game is over and stop reporting the play by play?
This is Alabama vs the Citadel

  12. No, guys, your not suppose to turn the ball over 3 times. The Rams are if you are going to have a chance to win.
Oh well, time to go do something else.

  13. Mullen outplayed cjb in preseason, we have nothing to lose….put him in before this game is out of hand

  14. CJ is a turnover machine and the main problem is his porno mustache. lol Playing like the Raiders no offense and reckless decisions and bad fundamentals..

  15. Witherspoon prances like a deer…. Not exactly what you want from a CB but hey, he fits this soft D perfectly.

  16. It’s really alarming that the niners are playing there worst against division opponents

  17. Garbage in garbage out.

This is what you get when you use first round picks to select third round players and third round picks to select 6th round talent.

Lynch and Shanahan are proving to be just as ineffective at scouting talent as Baalke was.

Boils down to York continuing to make poor leadership decisions. Hired a fraud GM and then handcuffed him to a coordinator pretending to be a head coach.

  18. This is very embarrassing! They don’t deserve to wear that super bowl Niner jersey.
Just a bunch of wannabees. CJB is a joke! He is a Steve DeBerg clone! Break this team up!

  19. Garnett is as lazy as it comes. They need to cut him after the season. Grant is right: Garnett does not want to play football.

  20. Have the 49ers quit? Is Shanahan starting to lose the team. Judging by the inactivity in here, the team is rapidly losing the fans.

    1. Most fans are watching the game, not following this blog…..they will be in here in force after the game.
Quick question…..Tom Savage, Cjb, Hoyer, Mullens r all a fit for a scheme that Kaep isnt? Or maybe it has nothing to do with scheme at all, or wins and losses for that matter.
Give us a look at Mullen, why not?? Cjb is shaun hill 2.0!!!

      1. KS’s scheme fit must mean playing like the Keystone Cops.
        .
I see that Buffalo, Miami and even the Jags have been content to lose without Kaep, than trying to win with him.
        .
Now, I will include the 49ers.

  21. OK, seriously time for Beathard to hit the bench. It really is time for something different. Even if Mullens sucks at least it will be a different smell.

  22. Talent is awful but compounded by inability to coach players up. Pats can get 4 guys off the street and turn them into a pro bowl oline…meanwhile we can’t get a #3 overall to make a big play and can’t call plays to protect a career backup QB. What a joke.

  23. Man really disappointed with R Foster you never even notice him,I guess I was wrong about him…And I gave up on Thomas long ago, crazy thing is tomsulas teams looked better…Oh man being a Niner fan is really a test of ones character because ive been watching pure garbage for about 20 years minus the Haurbaugh years…I wish I had an answer but right now it looks like bad drafting once again is what’s killing this team

    1. Agree Foster has been a zero this year. He is a first-round bust as is Garnett. Foster does not dominate anyone and has been forgotten.

      1. Foster’s play reminds me of Eric Reid’s play- slow to the ball, but always around the stack looking in.

    1. I wouldn’t say they quit as much as they just got manhandled by the best team in the league. Niners are soft.

    1. Oh man, why can’t SF TV switch to the Dallas game the IDIOTS? Boy the NFL sure enjoys making the SF 49er fan SUFFER through CRAP TV of the Bay Area. I want the Dallas game, IDIOTS! Bring back the blackout rule!

  24. start of the 4thQ and CBS just pulled the national feed of the game for out of market viewers and switched to a “more competitive game” – Cowboys vs. Redskins that is 13-10 Skins with 5:30 remaining in the 4thQ, and the Cowboys oblige (in CJ Beathard fashion) as Dak has a sack/fumble in the end zone recovered for a Redskin TD!!

    1. Really? Why can’t they do that for the SF audience that’s SICK OF THE CRAP right now? Damn you NFL< first you don't want us to see the Browns overtime now on Fox, now this CRAP!

    1. 12 seconds in the Dallas game…I’m going to protest the NFL for doing this to the SF audience.

    1. The 1 and 6 49ers have played like the 0 and 7 49ers. I had Jimmy G and the 49ers at 6 and 10, and that was fair and generous of me. 1 and 15 sounds great, but I’m still willing to be fair and say 4 and 12, but man, they could wind up 0 and 6 against the division, but I still think maybe 1 and 5, they might get that win in Arizona.

    2. Well, losing their franchise QB is a setback. JG made everyone play better. CJB just does not have that same mojo.
      .
It certainly has to be a rebuilding process. They are not reloading for a playoff run. I see talent, but the coaching is lacking, in all phases.

  25. Man I know it only year two and I’m not saying the sky is falling but it just hit me in the head…Really looking like Shanny Lynch are not the answer..I’m being dead serious has anyone ever seen a softer team in the NFL?These guys are almost on the Embarrassing scale,if I were Jed I’d be cussing Everytime I signed a check for anyone on this team…
But at least the upside is next year I think they will have a lettuce wrap vender walking the stands…yum yum

  26. Wait what was I thinking… embarrassed now?No it’s been pretty embarrassing since the balding prince and his family have taken over

    1. Wouldn’t it be nice after a game like this and this was the worse loss the 49ers ever endured that Jed York says that he’s going to sell the team. Jed York, sell the team. Jed York, we’re tired of this. Jed York, this is a high school team. Jed York, give Jimmy G a buy out and get a real Qb. Jimmy G, fire Saleh, and if Kyle hates it, fire him. Jed york, move your franchise OUT of Santa clara.

  27. Bench Beathard
    Fire Saleh
And that’s your 49ers game from your terrific 49er fan. What a great game it’s been, another butt kicking. Rams are like the Kurt Warner Rams and 49ers are like the 49ers, pathetic. I am so happy.

  28. Recording the game and damn if I didn’t get a glimpse of the damn score before watching.
    Let me guess…
    Injuries, penatiles and turnovers???

    1. Yeah you’re not missing anything, same thing you’ve seen every other game this season execpt worse..lol

    1. I’m proud of CJ, but I still want him benched. Trump has been a fantastic President and you liberal 49ers deserve to lose.

  29. Kyle needs to come under fire from the soft local media. Grant tells it like ti is. Kyle should be on the edge of being fired.

  30. Root for the NY Giants tomorrow night to beat teh Falcons. That way we get that top pick in the draft.

    1. Yup…that’s what I don’t get some people act like everything will be better with a top 5 draft pick but this and the previous regime have proven that doesn’t matter .. Honestly how many really good players does this team have even with injuries…
      Gorropolo
      Buckner
      Kittle
      Goodwin
      McGlinchey
      Breida?But made of glass
Otherwise this team is stripped of talent…just like poster above me said you can’t keep drafting 3 Rd round talent in the first round..
man I know I’m know expert but man how many college stars we’ve passed year after year that sure enough become stars in the NFL…And now that’s different regimes…Pettis…Thomas… Witherspoon…Alot of these picks are looking just like baalkes

  31. Remember when people were predicting a possible playoff berth and pro bowlers for this team.

The sad reality is we have 2-3 pro bowlers max (Buckner, Kittle and possibly Garoppolo).

  32. Well, one thing positive was- the defense held them under 49 points. Could have been 63 points, if the blocked punt had been recovered for a TD, and that challenge had been legitimized.
    .
I watched KS admit he has no clue. Maybe now, he will admit he needs help. Maybe he should swallow his pride and hire an OC.

  33. You solved it Seb. If he had hired an OC, the outcome would have been completely different. Lol. Yea, that would have made a difference. Such naivete. Hope you took my advise and bet on the Rams to cover (34-13 prognostication). I had a nice payday today. Thank you Rams, Lions, and Panthers. I know, you don’t gamble. Sad. Enjoy your evening.

PS. Can’t wait to see Coach Hindsight’s grades. More comedy.

    1. Juan, we heard JL shout to the rooftops that they are stressing ball security, every practice.
      .
Then we watched the Keystone Cops.
      .
Maybe they should hire an OC, and make his main job to be ball security and discipline. This last game proved that they do not have a clue, and ball security was a foreign concept.

  34. The over/under was 52. The only possible way going under would be one-sided blow out, and then both teams pack it in. Which is what happened as points sat at 49. Unbelievable.

I at least ask 9ers to compete. Today, that did not happen.
