SANTA CLARA — Here is the live blog for the 49ers’ Week 16 home game against the Los Angeles Rams. I will update this with information and analysis from the press box.

3:50 Here are the Rams inactives:

  • T Rob Havenstein
  • DB Dont’e Deayon
  • CB Troy Hill
  • S Jake Gervase
  • LB Natrez Patrick
  • OL Jamil Demby
  • TE Kendall Blanton

3:55 Here are the 49ers’ inactives:

  • DE Dee Ford
  • SS Jaquiski Tartt
  • RB Jeff Wilson Jr.
  • DT Jullian Taylor
  • WR Jordan Matthews
  • TE Daniel Helm
  • QB C.J. Beathard

5:13 Here is a radio hit I did this afternoon preview this game:

5:14 The 49ers win the toss and defer. The Rams will receive the opening kickoff.

5:20 On second and 7 from the 49ers 10, Ahkello Witherspoon gives up a touchdown catch to Brandin Cooks. The Rams lead 7-0.  Jared Goff attempted four passes during that drive and rolled out every time. Clever way to negate the 49ers’ pass rush. Good game plan by Sean McVay.

5:24 Richie James Jr. returns the kickoff 81 yards to the Rams 18-yard line. He’s such a weapon in the return game. The 49ers need to find a role for him on offense.

5:28 On third and goal from the 8, Rams inside linebacker breaks up a pass intended for George Kittle. Robbie Gould makes a 26-yard field and the 49ers trail 7-3. Missed opportunity.

5:31 Deebo Samuel dropped a pass and fumbled during that drive, but the fumble didn’t count because he was down. Still, hold onto the ball.

5:31 Kyle Shanahan called one run during that sequence, and he called for Tevin Coleman. He gained only two yards. Enough with Coleman already.

5:34 On third and 10 from the Rams 25, Arik Armstead bats down a short pass intended for Todd Gurley, and the Rams go three and out. After the punt, the 49ers get the ball at their 35-yard line.

5:39 On third and 5 from the 49ers 40, Garoppolo throws an incomplete deep pass to Kittle, and the 49ers go three and out. Rams safety Marqui Christian was covering Kittle man to man during that play.

5:41 Daniel Brunskill is starting at right guard in place of Mike Person, who’s active but on the bench.

5:45 On third and 3, the 49ers defensive line generates no pressure, but Jared Goff still sails a deep pass incomplete as if he were under siege, and the Rams go three and out. After the punt, the 49ers get the ball at the Rams’ 47.

5:47 On first and 10 from the 47, Bad Jimmy telegraphs a pass to Emmanuel Sanders and gets intercepted by Jalen Ramsey. The Rams get the ball at their 37.

5:55 On third and 1 from the 49ers 13, Jared Goff rolls to his right, dives for the first down and draws an unnecessary-roughness penalty from Marcell Harris, who hit Goff in the helmet. The Rams will face first and goal from the 6 when the second quarter starts.

5:57 Garoppolo’s passer rating in the first quarter was 0.0.

5:58 On first and goal from the 6, Todd Gurley bounces to the outside and bursts past a flailing Richard Sherman for the touchdown. The Rams lead 14-3. I haven’t seen Gurley accelerate like that since last season.

6:05 On first and 10 from the Rams 19, Samuel runs an end around and scores a touchdown. The 49ers trail 14-10. That was an effortless five-play, 75-yard drive.

6:19 On first and goal from the 1, Todd Gurley runs through an arm tackle from Arik Armstead and scores. The Rams lead 21-10. Sean McVay is calling bootleg passes almost every snap and making a tired defense even more exhausted by forcing it to run sideline to sideline over and over. Smart.

6:28 On first and 10 from the Rams 16, Raheem Mostert runs untouched into the end zone. The 49ers trail 21-17. Daniel Brunskill made an excellent block turning Aaron Donald out of the hole.

6:36 On second and 10 from the 49ers 48, Fred Warner steps in front of a lazy swing pass to running back Malcolm Brown, intercepts it and returns it for a touchdown. Brilliant play by an excellent linebacker. Best play of his career so far.

6:41 Rams go three and out. Niners get the ball back with five seconds left before halftime.

6:42 Garoppolo kneels. Halftime.

6:58 On second and 15, Garoppolo throws a pass to Emmanuel Sanders, but Jalen Ramsey tips it and Darious Williams picks it off at the 49ers’ 25. George Kittle was wide open, but Garoppolo forced the pass to Sanders, who was covered.

7:01 On third and 9 from the 49ers 24, Robert Saleh blitzes Marcell Harris, and no one blocks him, so Jared Goff throws the ball away and commits intentional grounding. Next play, Greg Zuerlein misses a 52-yard field goal. The 49ers take over at their 42-yard line. Great stand by the defense.

7:09 On fourth and four from the Rams 38, the 49ers punt and pin the Rams at their 3-yard line. Good point by the rookie, Mitch Wishnowsky.

7:13 The Rams go three and out. After the punt, the Niners get the ball at their 44.

7:19 On third and five from the 49ers 49-yard line, Laken Tomlinson gives up a sack to Morgan Fox. The Rams get the ball at their 32 after a 15-yard penalty by D.J. Reed during the punt.

7:26 On third and 6 from the 49ers 22, Cooper Kupp beats Ahkello Witherspoon with a simple crossing route for a touchdown. The Falcons burned Witherspoon with the same route repeatedly last week. Witherspoon isn’t as good as he was before he injured his foot Week 3.

7:32 On first and 10, Daniel Brunskill gives up a sack to Aaron Donald. Next play, Joe Staley gives up a sack to Dante Fowler. Niners punt two plays later.

7:36 The Rams will face third and 12 from their 48 when the fourth quarter starts.

7:39 On third and 12, Goff throws an incomplete pass to Higbee. After the punt, the 49ers get the ball at their 6.

7:44 On third and 7 from the 21, Mike McGlinchey gives up a sack to Dante Fowler. After the punt, the Rams get the ball at their 43 with 11:43 left in the fourth quarter.

7:49 On third and 1 from the 49ers 48, Goff throws a screen pass to Robert Woods, but the 49ers tackle him for no gain. Excellent defense. After the punt, the 49ers get the ball at their 9 with 8:54 left in the fourth quarter.

7:57 On third and goal from the 7, Garoppolo rolls right and throws a touchdown pass to George Kittle. The 49ers lead 31-28 with 6:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. Beautiful throw.

8:08 On second and 10 from the 49ers 38, Marcell Harris dropped the interception every knew was coming from Goff. That would have been checkmate. The Rams make a 52-yard field goal and tie the game at 31 with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter. The 49ers have all three timeouts remaining.

8:11 On first and 10, Garoppolo goes down for the fifth time. Dante Fowler looped to the inside and ran right by Laken Tomlinson, who gave up a sack earlier. Bad game for Tomlinson. The 49ers will face second and 16 from their 19 after the two-minute warning.

8:18 On third and 16 from the 49ers 31, Garoppolo throws a deep pass to Sanders, who is wide open. Gain of 46. Play of the season.

8:20 Robbie Gould makes a 33-yard field goal and the 49ers win 34-31. Stay tuned for my game story and report card.

This article has 205 Comments

  1. Screens to Mostart and Brieda , the interior of the line is gonna be a problem , don’t wanna see 2 yard Coleman dives , especially on first down

  2. I have just a dreadful feeling that the Niners lack enough offensive and defensive weapons to win out. Lots of work to do over the offseason.

    1. I hope the 49ers go all the way but they are too injured and still missing a few pieces this year. After winning 8 games vs weaker teams, they are struggling vs harder teams but still a great year compared to the last handful of years. The D is struggling, they need Dee Ford and Kwon Alexander back badly and better DB’s next year. And draft 2 OL in the first few picks and get a very good solid FA OL….The Saints vs Ravens in the SB looks a little more realistic.

  3. Ram It Down, straight through the hearts of these clowns! Win it for CJ Beathard and family!

  4. OK Saleh, let’s keep Gurley away from the perimeter, and unleash the hounds on Goff, forcing him into his shell. Those are the keys to stopping the Rams’ offensive attack.

Offensively, let’s use a lot of motion, get Deebo going early, and let’s use the screen game to counter the Rams’ interior pass rush!

    It’s GO TIME! GO NINERS!

  5. Wow.
Pathetic how they had no counter for the roll out strategy on that first drive.
    D looks tired
    Goff outrunning Bosa with ease.
    Witherspoon right through his hands.
Yikes. This could be long night and a limping into the playoffs.

    1. And no counter on the 2nd drive and 3rd drive…..NFL teams have figured out the 49ers D from the first half of the season including how to get around Bosa!!..D looks tired, giving up 60 points in the last 2 games vs avg. to good teams. But they are also missing a few important players on the D. I hope they aren’t a one and done in the playoffs.

  6. I did not make the trip has my cousin is using the tickets hope you are having a good time crabs, we live in Chico ca now which is about 4 hrs away my wife has their Christmas party with the Paradise school group, important for me to be their as moral support for her. Touch to see them give up a easy td, hurts to not, have Jones, Alexander, Tart and Ford. James helped!

    1. Yes called no Richburg ! Is offense all revolves a stud center in the middle, mediocre line play means mediocre offense, next man up can only go so far until the wheels fall off. Hope I am wrong !

  7. Losing Richburg could be the Achilles that keeps the 49ers from getting to the SB or the top 2 seed
    Sad loss

  8. Well that was a losing exchange, no defense followed my a offensive failure after a great return.

See Coleman is still stealing touches from Breida and Mostert.

  9. I still believe by games end the offense will need to save this defense but this is an auspicious start.

  10. Can someone remind Jimmy that when we said that the offence needs to win the game, we meant for the Niners, not the Rams.

  11. Niners peaked to early, they look like a worn out football team..We lose this game just sit everyone for Seattle and be road warriors

    1. First half of the season they beat weaker teams and less injuries. NFL hadn’t yet figured out Bosa and the defense out. Injuries and a few missing pieces, playing harder teams plus being a little tired and young is showing up in the 2nd half of the season.

  12. We had our bye week way too early. Our team looks down, tired, old and done. Jimmy has retrogressed.

  13. Wow Niners D used to be #1 now our defense makes washed up players look like all Stars again

  14. The team is tired. You can’t play 12 straight games and expect to still be full speed. The coaching staff should sit the starters second half and next game. You can effectively give yourself a bye play 3 play off games and have another bye…

    1. A win does nothing for this team. You play another tough game next week and limp into the playoffs or do you hedge your bets, knowing your team travels well, let them rest now and give yourself the best chance to win, having already beaten the playoff contenders in their home once.

  15. Horrible news about CJ’s brother. This has to be weighing heavily on the team.

    Just so awful :(

  16. Look at all these fake fans who show up when the team is down, just to be a bunch of Bs and complain.

  17. The bootleg action by Goff is killing the Niners. The DE’s are biting down hard every time. Goff is getting first downs even running the ball! Niners have to STAY HOME! If so, Goff will run right into the Defensive Ends and Niners will also put pressure on Goff on these misdirection plays. Fool the DE’s once on this bootleg action , shame on them, fool the DE’s 10 times!, shame on Saleh.

  18. Good grief, reading through some of the comments on here. Some people calling the game over at the start of the 2nd quarter?!!! Way to believe in the team folks. This team has shown a few times this year already an ability to hang in games and score points when they need to. You’d never think so though with how some fans overreact to being down.

      1. Apparently if the Niners don’t completely dominate every single down, then they are failing as human beings and as a team and deserve to be banished from the league. ?

    1. I would wait and see the injury report at the end of this game because any win that isn’t a super bowl win is meaningless. Put comments in context.

I have them going to super bowl even down 11 here in the second quarter

    2. Scooter I trust your opinion, glad they are ahead but what’s your take with out center Richburg and Dt jones, and no Alexander, I am truly worried about any consistency going forward! Sure hope they win it all but worried about these particular starters being out.

      1. Every team is having their depth and quality tested at this point of the season. The 49ers are one of a handful of good teams with a good chance of winning it all this season, but like others have lost some good players along the way to injury. It sucks, it might decrease their chances of winning it a bit, but really it will come down to holding their nerve as crunch time arrives, making plays when they matter, and probably getting a little bit of luck along the way.

Now that the 49ers have lost to the Falcons and just scraped through this one it seems like people have forgotten they are only two weeks removed from going 2-1 against the hardest 3 game stretch at this point of a regular season ever, and still have the best record in the NFC.

    3. Scooter, with a writer who will do his best to unearth the bad in a magical team, of course he’s going to draw in the pessimistic dregs of the fan base. The allies, the montys, the willtalks, the speed kills, they just can’t wait to have their validation. F ‘em.

      1. There is certainly some of that Rib.

There are also others that appear to be so invested in the team winning the SB, and ride every single play like it’ll determine whether the team wins the SB, that they are forgetting to enjoy watching and supporting a good team.

  19. lol Scooter!! One moron said “this ones over!”
I’ve got six words for him.

“Where your lips meet the load “! STFU!

  20. See, the Niners DE stayed home on the Rams 1st bootleg in the 2nd half and their offense went nowhere. Let’s keep that up. Now let’s rush the ball down the Rams throat and then beat them silly down field with the play action pass.

  21. I have to admit I am very disappointed in the offense so far. The defense needs more from them… they have been quite disjointed all game. Little to no rhythm.

Mostart and Sanders need to get more touches imo

  22. Once again no safety help on a deep pass. First round next year should have a safety under serious consideration. Especially since Ward and Tartt never play a full season.

  23. This interior oline is pathetic you can not blame Shanahan or Garrapollo, I can not believe most fans and others thought the loss of Richburg was no big deal! It is!

    1. In general, he has had time.
Either Jimmy is not pulling the trigger or the routes are too long developing.
I am very disappointed in Shanahan’sgame plan.

  24. This doesn’t look remotely like a playoff team anymore. Bad defense, bad OL play, a QB that has regressed in this game (so far).

  25. I just want JG to move around in the pocket more. You don’t have to run. Just buy yourself some time.

  26. Great td but you can not have your QB running for his life every play! This will catch up to us go defense!

  27. And that’s why Harris plays defense…… Defensive players are offensive players who can’t catch.

  28. Game blacked out where I am (will watch on NFL gamepass later)

Is Breida playing? Haven’t heard his name.

    1. Kyle’s not using Brieda. I am completely at a loss to understand why he’s not trying to run the ball to the outside using Brieda’s speed.

      1. I love his team-building plan and his scheme, but I often question is in-game strategies and his player choices. But then again he might know something we do not.

      2. He brought in Coleman and is trying to vindicate himself. Breida and WIlson Jr. are better.

  29. Why is Kyle calling for passes from the pocket on first downs? Has not even tried to run to the outside. Must be very good reasons, maybe the O line not zone blocking well in practice.

  30. Harris my GOD
    Not a champion
    Dropping that was horrendous
This game is going to give me a stroke

  31. No time no protection and jimmy hits Bourne then we try to run to the outside but no blocking by the oline!

  32. Kittle has to save the oline and block on the bomb to sanders, winning in spite of the oline! Hard to do!

  33. They certainly deserved to win one on a last second field goal for a change. About time the FBG turned in their favor. Nice win.

  34. Jimmy just wins. Said it would be a grinder. Did someone on this sight say the game was over in the first quarter? Really? Really? Great game! Crab, you saw a classic!! Congrats!!

    1. The team wins. Lets give credit to everyone not just the QB. Give him credit for that last series but other players came through as well. The team also loses.

      1. Sorry Willtalk, that was for all the idiots that would have blamed Jimmy had they lost. You know who they are. They know who they are. They don’t know s$$t.

      2. Jimmy pulling off two clutch miracles in the last drive really gets your goat, doesn’t it, WT?

  35. Man, this team is fun to watch! O-line sucked but you know ya gotta give Jimmy G credit man. Those were clutch throws. He’s like 100X better then Alex Smith!

    1. Alex was clutch. Last time I checked he led two teams that went to NGC championships and a super bowl, as well as played in and won playoff games.

You dont have to throw bias shade in order to prop up Jimmy. Let jimmy be Jimmy

  36. That was crazy.
SF was outplayed but stole a victory on a late blown coverage.
The offense struggled all game, the Oline struggled to hold up and Jimmy and Kyle did them no favors.
Kyle called a lot of longer route concepts and Jimmy held the ball forever.
The Defense once again gave up a late go-ahead score for the 4th week in a row.

However, on the plus side. The D didn’t give up much off of the offensive turnovers and Jimmy stepped up to make plays when it mattered.

    1. And if they play this way and like they did vs Atl, they will surely lose next week which they really can’t afford. They need every break they can get.

  37. Gee-zus. Hell of a game. Lots of questionable things happening on the offense. No Breida. Kyle keeps trying to force Coleman on us. Sanders was no where to be found until his play at the end of the game. Our offense looked out Sync. The defense gave up too much. No way Goff should have been able to roll out practically every play in the first half and the d ends didn’t make adjustment. Thank God for this win. But my anxiety goes to a different level for this Seattle game

  38. So despite the team being done and various players (including JG) being useless (according to some posters here today) they still managed to come back and win the game. Go figure.

The 49ers had to show some resilience today. Not a good game by the D (again) and they are really struggling to affect the opposing QB atm. Offense also struggled for large chunks of the game.

However, they hung in there and made enough big plays when it mattered to win it in the end. Harris letting the ball slip through his hands was a concern though – the D has struggled to close out games in recent times and plays like that are part of the reason why. But JG and the offense were able to covert two huge 3nd and longs to win it. Seems like the last team with the ball is winning these games of recent times. The D needs to start finding a way to close out games again.

  39. This puts more pressure on Seadderall to come up with a W tomorrow.

    Go Cards! Beat the SeaCheats!

    1. Tomorrow’s game doesn’t matter at all to Seattle in terms of the division.
Only the SF game matters to them at this point.

      1. True, however, I think Seattle would much rather play SF coming off a win rather than a loss to a division rival. Just my feeling on it.

  40. On to Seattle. Got to get over this hump of we’re going to be world championship contenders. They have been the thorn in our side for too long (haven’t won in Seattle since 2011 when Alex Smith beat them on a rainy night). Time to rip that monkey off our back!! Go Niners!!

  41. Anyone notice Pam whatever her neme was interviewed Jimmy and said “now you have to go to Seattle,go get torn up”……wtf?

    1. I thought she said “Toe up”. Like “go party”. Haha I sound old.

Also, did anyone hear the guy on the panel say “butthole naked”? I must be hearing things.

  42. The way I see it, the 49ers desperately need a relatively healthy Dee Ford if they are going to run the table in the playoffs. Bosa is the only their only true edge rusher right now, and he’s clearly trying to do a little too much right now, knowing if he doesn’t get to the QB, nobody is.

    A few more observations:

    – I’ve seen enough of Solomon Thomas! He seems like a liability right now, on both passing and running downs. Street outplayed Thomas tonight, IMO, and he’s just getting his feet wet, for crying out loud! Kyle needs to promote either Kevin Givens, or Alex Barret, and hope he can get some production out of one of those players because right now, because Thomas is absolutely hurting this defense.

    – Another player who is hurting the team right now, is Ben Garland. How hard is it to snap the fricking football? My gosh he’s bad shotgun snapper! And he’s definitely a liability in pass protection.

    – Brunskill is certainly a better OT than OG at this point in time.

    – They need a healthy Tartt back on the filed as well, ASAP. I like Harris as a run stopper, but his coverage skills are lacking.

    – Jimmy G came up clutch again tonight, but he has to start being more decisive, and trust his reads. He’s holding onto the football longer than he should be. Also, I am scratching my head trying to figure out for the life of me …. why isn’t Kyle rolling Jimmy out of the pocket more often?

    – Where in the world was Matt Breida tonight, and why can’t Kyle find more opportunities for Dwelley to make some plays?

    – Robbie Gould seems to have his mojo back! That could be a big deal moving forward!

  43. Where’s Mr. Rocknonuts and Montysquirmjakoff and their “this game is over, one and done crap”??

  44. Last game against the Rams, Goff was the statue and got crushed. This game, Jimmy was the statue and got crushed. I spent most of the game screaming at KS to call designed “move the launch point” plays for Jimmy G. After watching Goff be so successful at these plays, how could KS not try at least a few. Totally puzzling to me.

But, hey, the team found a way to win and Jimmy came through in the clutch.

  45. A Cards tomorrow victory has no influence on who wins NFC West. A Seattle loss to the Cards could affect seeding though.

Think Seattle will rest starters tomorrow?

    1. No way Seattle rests their starters tomorrow, they are still fighting for the #1 seed, and home field advantage throughout.

On the other hand …. had the Niners taken care of business last week, they could have rested a bunch of starters tonight. I’m not sure why we didn’t see more urgency from them last week, especially the conservative offensive game plan.

  46. Love all the posters here who know more about how to coach offense than KS! Sheesh! And the ones who know more about how to play QB than Jimmy, who is one off the five top QBs in the league in my opinion.

And as Bill Walsh used to remind us … You do know there is another NFL team out there on the field, right? … Right?

    1. Good point Kezar. After all, the Rams were in the Super Bowl last year, and they crushed the Seahawks just a couple weeks back.

That said, I think it’s fair to critique some of their shortcomings over the last couple weeks. Without question, injuries have been the biggest factor in terms of the team’s drop off over the last couple weeks. They are very thin on true edge rushers, and a lack of a solid rotation on the DL has taken a serious toll both in terms of coverage on the backend, as well as the glaringly obvious fatigue. This is a tired defense! Offensively, the loss of Richburg has really hampered the entire offense.

But yah, some of these posters on this blog tonight have been wildly overreactive, and way over the top. Good teams find a way to win games like tonight’s, and the Niners did just that. They found a way to win this game with some clutch plays and some serious mental fortitude. This is a special team in terms of their mentality, and they fight like hell, Everytime they step of a football field, with the exception of last week. That kind of championship mentality, that starts from the top, bodes well for what they have in front of them, starting next week!

  47. I wish to commend KS for using his time outs wisely. It sure was nice to have all 3 time outs that helped them win, in the last 2 minutes of the half.
    .
JG was clutch. I would call that pass to Sanders on third and 16, the Third Down Bomb.
    .
Oh, look, Sanders fell to the ground, securing the ball, instead of possibly trying to run before catching it, and dropping the ball. That was the play of the game.
    .
Nice to see them use Dwelley as a receiver, for a big gain.
    .
Now, on to Seattle. The Niners need to take care of business, instead of possibly having to play in the Clink twice. Some, with macho bravado, may want to make it twice as hard to win, but the Niners should be bold, seize the day, and win the division. Getting that first round bye is huge, to heal and rest the players.

    1. Congrats Seb.

Sanders long reception there on the final drive was the UNCOMMON occasion in which, all Sanders needed to do was secure the catch, and in the process, he put the team in position to win the game with a fairly routine FG. Jimmy threw it in a way that let Sanders settle under it and secure the catch, even if it meant going to the ground in the process. A couple safe plays later, Gould did the rest, kicking the winning FG as time expired.

  48. Was out tonight and just finished watching the game.

As long as #10 is on the field the 49ers have a chance to win.

  49. Ahkello Witherspoon was awful tonight. Don’t think he’s a better cover guy than Moseley and he definitely doesn’t have that physicality.

    1. Yep, Witherspoon had another subpar performance tonight. I thought one play in particular was absolutely pathetic, and that was the first TD he gave up to Cooks. Goff rolled out to his left, and as he threw the pass, Witherspoon had a golden opportunity to brake on the ball and make the INT in the endzone. Akhello “found” himself in perfect position, with outside leverage, and no other receiver in his area other than Cooks. He was in perfect position to brake on Goff’s pass, but for some inexplicable reason, he hesitated, broke late, and ended up allowing the much smaller Cooks make the play. It looked to me like a lack of effort, because I don’t have another answer for how or why he let that happen. Any decent CB in that situation, intercepts that football, or, at the very least, breaks up the pass.

Mosely makes that play, and even though this was the most aggregious mistake Witherspoon made in coverage tonight, it was far from the only poor play he made (or failed to make) which is why Mosely should be starting over him right now.

Also, how is it a veteran NFL Center can’t make a proper shotgun snap, and when was the last time Solomon Thomas made a big play? Sure, without question Thomas is a “tweener”, without a defined position at which he matches up particularly well, but wouldn’t you think that, just simply by chance, he’d find himself in the right place, at the right time, to make a big play? Geesh!

  50. Agreed. Jimmy showed resilience and never looked disturbed after the int and sacks. He made enough big plays to win.

The defense has been a little sluggish over the last 3 games but I expect them to be better in the playoffs as the team could get some key players back.
    Nice win tonight.

  51. Niners should go with the 22 personnel.
    .
    Deactivate Toilolo, and activate Dwelley.
    .
    Give Richie James more snaps.
