Bloggin’ live from the 49ers-Redskins season finale

Greetings from beautiful, ahem, Candlestick Park, site of today’s 49ers season finale against the Redskins.

I trust you all are having a great holiday season. It should be an interesting couple days – and weeks – around the 49ers as they attempt to get settled into a direction for the 2009 season. Here’s what I wrote for today’s Press Democrat: “Singletary puts coaching talk on backburner.”

Congratulations to my brother, Marty, the Clark Griswold of our family. He was always a little bit off-kilter – but in a good way. He was recognized on local TV for having the most insanely lit house in all of Chico, population 85,000 – give or take several thousand. Click here to check out the video.

My friend, Ro, wants to know of anyone who is taping Joe Starkey’s final 49ers radio broadcast, and whether she can somehow get a copy of it. Is anyone able to help? Thank you.

Niners win the toss and will receive.

FIRST QUARTER

–Bajema fields the short kickoff and returns it to the 35.

–Niners open with three wideouts: Bruce, Johnson and S.Hill. Gore is in the backfield. Gore picks up 7 yards on first down. He’s 15 away from 1,000.

–Gore takes a direct snap out of the “Wildcat” formation with Shaun Hill out wide to the right. Gore gains 5 yards. He’s 10 yards away.

–Foster in for Gore, who is getting his ankle re-taped on the sideline.

–Foster rips off a 9-yard run to set up third and 1.

–Play-fake, and Hill hits Billy Bajema (!) on a 29-yard gain to the Redskins’ 15. Bajema beat safety Chris Horton on the play. That’s Bajema’s second reception of the season, and the longest of his career.

–Josh Morgan with a nice run after catch to get the first down at the 3-yard line. It’s first and goal.

–Shaun Hill takes it in from 2-yard out for a touchdown. Then, he flips it to David Baas whose spike attempt did not get much air. So the 49ers cash in on a 10-play, 65-yard drive that lasted 5:36. It’s 49ERS 7, REDSKINS 0 with 9:24 remaining in the quarter.

–Redskins take over at the 28 after Rock Cartwright’s return.

–Walt Harris with a very nice play to break up a pass down the field to Antwaan Randle El.

–Haralson with a nice play to stop Portis for 2 yards.

–Incomplete on third down, and the 49ers will get the ball back after a three-and-out.

–Niners take over at their own 35 with 8:26 remaining in the quarter.

–Gore gains 3 yards over the right side.

–J.Hill with a 9-yard gain on an end around.

–Gore catches a 6-yard flip pass from Hill. Gore is clearly affected by the ankle sprain. But he’s toughing it out.

–Four-yard gain for Gore, who is now 3 yards shy of becoming the first player in 49ers history to rush for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. It’s third and 1 . . . but before we get there, the Redskins call a timeout.

–Nedney misses a 48-yard FG attempt wide right. That was a rare bad snap from Brian Jennings, as it was not a clean exchange from him to holder Andy Lee. The timing was thrown off, though Lee did a good job of picking the ball off the ground and getting it ready for Nedney. The Redskins will take over at their own 38 with 4:10 remaining in the quarter.

–Washington QB Jason Campbell with a 17-yard pass to Santana Moss vs. the 49ers’ zone. Mark Roman makes the stop.

Campbell with a 9-yard scramble on third-and-6 to the 49ers’ 20.

–On the final play of the quarter, Portis picks up a first down inside the 49ers’ 10-yard line with a 7-yard gain.

SECOND QUARTER

–Portis busts through a Willis tackle attempt to get into the end zone on a 4-yard scoring run with 14:20 remaining. The Redskins really controlled the 49ers’ defensive front on that series. It’s now REDSKINS 7, 49ERS 7. It was a 10-play, 62-yard drive for the Redskins.

–Gore gains 3 yards and that gives him 1,000 exactly for the season. Congrats to Frank for making history. He needed this after his U got beat by Cal last night.

–Shaun Hill is intercepted by Carlos Rogers and returned to the 49ers’ 23-yard line. The ball was thrown behind Josh Morgan, who really didn’t do a good job of trying to break it up. The 49ers are a league-worst minus-18 in the turnover margin this season.

–Manny Lawson nearly gets it back, but Campbell‘s pass slips through his hands. It would’ve been a great play. As a result, it’s just a pass defensed.

–It’s third and 9 for the ‘Skins . . . pressure by Haralson and McDonald, and Willis makes the tackle for a 1-yard loss to Sellers.

–Shaun Suisham with the FG attempt. It’s a 41-yard FG. That makes it REDSKINS 10, 49ERS 7 with 11:26 remaining in the half.

–Somebody measure Shaun Hill’s hands. The ball slipped away as he tried to hand off to Gore. It’s a fumble and a 9-yard loss.

–Gore gets 8 yards back. It’s now third and 11 . . . Hill on the scramble after Staley gave up a QB pressure to Andre Carter. Hill picks up 7 yards, and Andy Lee is on to punt.

–Lee hammers a 52-yard punt, and the Redskins take over at the 22.

–Haralson breaks through to throw Portis for a 4-yard line. That’s really a terrific play.

–Now, it’s third and 8 . . . the Redskins pick up the blitz, freeing up Moss for a first down against Nate Clements. It’s a gain of 15 yards for a first down.

–Another third down for the Redskins. They need 2 yards. Campbell burns a timeout before the snap.

–Michael Lewis with the sack coming off the left side. But there’s a defensive holding penalty on Takeo Spikes. So that’ll be a first down for the Redskins, and Lewis is injured on the play. They’re examining Lewis’ left knee. Mike Singletary has walked onto the field to check on Lewis. He’s on his feet and being helped off the field, mostly under his own power.

–Portis is stopped short on third and 1. Franklin got great penetration, and Spikes made the tackle.

–Redskins go for it on fourth and 1 . . . Portis gets the ball on a run play right at Justin Smith, and he gains 3 yards to the 36.

–INJURY UPDATE: Michael Lewis’ return is questionable with a left knee injury.

–Goldson is in the lineup in place of Lewis, and he’s doing pretty well so far. Also, Lawson came hobbling off the field. The team’s athletic trainers are looking at him on the sideline.

–Third and 5 for the Redskins . . . Cooley with a 12-yard gain on a tight-end screen. And the next play will come after the two-minute warning.

–INJURY UPDATE: Lawson has a right hamstring strain, and his return is questionable.

–Mark Roman came in completely untouched on a safety blitz and failed to take down Campbell (6-5, 231) from the blind side. Roman had a 15-yard run at Campbell, who got away and picked up the first down. Roman is injured. He’s up now and walking off the field.

–The Redskins have a first and goal at the 6-yard line. Campbell hits Randle El on a crossing pattern. He gets into the end zone for a touchdown after cutting back against Clements. They’re going to review it to see if Randle El made it into the end zone. I’m not sure there’s a TV angle that will allow them to overturn this call.

–Referee Peter Morelli says the call stands. That makes it REDSKINS 17, 49ERS 7 with :26 remaining in the half. The 49ers are getting manhandled after a very quick start.

–By the way, that was a 16-play drive for the Redskins that chewed up more than nine minutes on the clock.

–Hill overshoots a wide-open Bryant Johnson at the sideline on first down from the 20. Now, there’s :21 remaining.

–Hill to Hill for a gain of 6. And the 49ers will get off one final play, Hill shovels an incomplete pass to Robinson.

–Well, that was less-than inspiring. Let’s see what the second half has in store.

THIRD QUARTER

–Lawson is back on the field to start the second half.

–Moss escapes Tarell Brown and gets up to the 35 for a 10-yard gain and a first down for the Redskins, who are leading 17-7.

–Portis fumbles, and it looks like Takeo Spikes recovers it at the Redskins’ 38. Not sure who caused it.

–Gore blasts around the left side for an 8-yard gain to the 30.

–Robinson takes the snap in the “Wildcat,” and hands off to Gore for 11 yards to the 19. Gore limps off the field, and Foster is back in.

–Foster takes all the way to the 1-yard line with an 18-yard gain, thanks to a nice Vernon Davis block.

–Foster is stuffed on first down.

–Foster follows a pulling Chilo Rachal over the left side for the touchdown. Foster gives it up to Rachal, so he could spike the ball. Now, it’s REDSKINS 17, 49ERS 14 with 11:19 remaining in the quarter.

–They just announced Joe Starkey to the crowd. He’s waving to the crowd. Nice tribute to the voice of the 49ers who is calling his final game today.

–Justin Smith and Aubrayo Franklin combine on a sack, dumping Campbell for a 13-yard loss. Smith was there first, and Franklin finished him off.

–The 49ers’ defense holds. Rossum is back to return the punt. Rossum returns it 8 yards to the 25 with 8:49 remaining in the quarter.

–Barry Sims with a false start, as he lined up on the left side on an unbalanced line.

–Hill makes an ill-advised throw. It’s incomplete. Shaun Hill is not having a great game.

–It’s third-and-10 after a 5-yard pass to Vernon Davis . . . Hill overthrows Bruce, who was open on an “out” route. Andy Lee is on to punt.

–The Redskins take over at their own 26 after Lee gets a good bounce for a 47-yard punt. Randle El takes a 2-yard loss on the return.

–On third and 2 . . . Goldson breaks up pass underneath to Randle El. The Redskins picked up the 49ers’ blitz, but Goldson made a play.

–Plackemeier with a horrible punt, but it gets a nice roll to the 18-yard line. It’s a 48-yard punt. Niners take over with 6:24 left in the quarter.

–Gore with a nice gain, but he fumbles. It’s picked up by Delanie Walker, who advances it a couple more yards.

–Andre Carter picks up the sack of Hill for a 7-yard loss.

–Morgan makes the catch on a quick slant. It’s a 16-yard gain, and he got upended pretty good. It’s third and a foot.

–Gore is stopped short on third down, and the 49ers will punt despite the boos from the crowd. Oh, my! They’re booing Singletary. They can’t do that!!!

–Lee with a 50-yard punt. The Redskins take over at their own 11.

–It’s third and 3 . . . Roderick Green with great recognition to stop a screen pass short . . . However, Haralson is called for being offside. And that’s a first down for the Redskins.

–After two incomplete passes, the Redskins have a third and 10 . . . Niners with a four-man rush . . . Campbell finds Cooley in the middle of the field for a first down.

FOURTH QUARTER

–Harris with a big hit on Moss to break up a pass. It’s third and 6 for the Redskins.

Campbell with plenty of time, but Moss drops it. Wonder if Harris’ hit might have had something to do with that.

–Keith Lewis came up the middle and missed a block. The punt goes into the end zone. The 49ers will take over at the 20 with 14:04 left in regulation.

–Hill gets stepped on as he’s throwing, but still manages to get it to Bryant Johnson for a 19-yard gain.

–Foster with a one-handed catch at full speed along the right sideline and picks up 12 yards. The 49ers are at the Redskins’ 44, down by just 3 points.

–Michael Robinson with a fantastic catch over Rocky McIntosh for 24 yards to the 20-yard line.

–Hill slings it out it out to Bruce on the left sideline, as the 49ers did a nice job of picking up the blitz. He’s a little short of the first down. It’s third and 1 at the 11.

–And the 49ers will take a time out with the playclock running down.

–Robinson with a strong short-yardage run to stay low and get the first down. It’s first and goal at the 9. That was the 49ers’ first third-down conversion since their opening drive.

–Jason Hill with the grab, and he dives into the end zone. It’s a 9-yard TD, Hill to Hill. That makes it 49ERS 21, REDSKINS 17 with 9:53 remaining. That was a very nice, 8-play, 80-yard drive that covered 4 minutes, 11 seconds.

–Jason Hill makes the tackle of Cartwright on the return. The Redskins take over at the 27.

–Clements throws Portis for a 1-yard loss in run support.

–A big third-and-2 play . . . Justin Smith, the Bill Walsh Award winner, throws Portis for a 1-yard loss. The Redskins will punt.

–Rossum with a very nifty return up close to midfield. It was a 51-yard punt and a 35-yard return for Rossum.

–Niners take over at the 50 with 7:49 remaining . . . Hill hits Morgan for 26 yards. Martz with a great call.

–Vernon Davis with a short reception. He fumbles it, but gets it back. It was a gain of 4 yards.

–Foster with a short run.

–The 49ers have a third and 5 with six minutes and counting . . . Foster makes the catch but it’s shy of the first down.

–Joe Nedney is on for a 33-yard field goal attempt. It’s good. That makes it 49ERS 24, REDSKINS 17 with 5:06 remaining.

–Redskins get a nice return to the 45, where Tully Banta-Cain brings him down.

–Justin Smith breaks up Campbell‘s first-down pass a the line of scrimmage.

–Cooley with a 12-yard reception vs. Lawson. ‘Skins have the ball at the 49ers’ 43.

–Clements with good coverage against Randle El deep down the field. It’s incomplete.

–Moss with the catch and run. It’s a first down at the 49ers’ 31 with 3:45 and counting.

–False start on left tackle Stephon Heyer. It’s second and 12 at the 33 . . . Campbell steps up to escape pressure from Haralson and scrambles up the middle for big yards. It’s a first down on a 23-yard gain to the 9.

–It’s the two-minute warning. The Redskins will have a second and goal from the 9 after the break. The 49ers’ defense has been really good in the red zone this season. The Redskins’ offense has been pretty bad in the red zone. The odds say the 49ers will stop them.

–Portis is brought down for a short gain.

–Third and goal at the 7. This is obviously four-down territory. Complete to Cooley. Spikes brings him down at the 2-yard line. There’s a timeout, and the play will be on the line on this next play.

Campbell takes it up the middle and scores with 1:09 remaining. The extra point will tie it up.

–But, first, Morelli will review the play to determine whether Campbell, in fact, did score. And the replay clearly shows Campbell scored. And Morelli confirms it was a touchdown.

–Suisham makes the PAT. That makes it REDSKINS 24, 49ERS 24 with 1:09 remaining in regulation. What will Martz do when the 49ers get the ball?

–Rossum with a 26-yard return. The Niners take over at the 27 with 1:02 remaining.

–Shaun Hill had Jason Hill WIDE OPEN down the field, but Shaun Hill didn’t see him. Hill ended up throwing it away.

–Hill to Hill underneath for 9 yards. It’s third and 1. The 49ers take a timeout. The 49ers need 25 to 30 yards to give Nedney a legitimate chance to kick the game-winning field goal. There is 46 seconds remaining. But it’s also third down.

–Hill hits Robinson for a first down to the Redskins’ 45-yard line.

–Hill spikes it with :31 remaining. They need about 10 yards to give Nedney a chance.

–Hill throws deep middle to Bryant Johnson for 23 yards. Hill spikes it with :13 remaining. Hill runs over to take to Martz. The 49ers still have one timeout remaining. They’re in field goal range at the 21-yard line.

–Robinson is the single back. Hill takes a kneel down and the 49ers take a timeout with :02 remaining.

–They’re putting one second back on the clock. Nedney is on for a 39-yard field goal. The Redskins take a timeout to try to ice the veteran kicker.

IT’S GOOD!

THAT’S THE GAME!

NINERS 27, REDSKINS 24.

  1. There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
