Softli first; Baalke the favorite?
The NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora said, via Twitter on Tuesday, that “(he’d) be surprised if Trent Baalke doesn’t end up getting that position.” LaCanfora has broken several 49ers stories this season.

“Interim” 49ers beat reporter Phil Barber here. As Eric Branch fights fatigue and holiday travelers to get back to the Bay Area, I’ll be covering the haps at 4949 Centennial today. I’ll throw you a longer report later. But before I get to some transcribing, here is a brief rundown on the press conference we just witnessed.
Want to get a better sense of former 49ers minority owner Franklin Mieuli, who died Sunday? Check out this story by someone who knew Mieuli well: Art Spander, who has been covering Bay Area sports since just after the 1906 earthquake. It’s a nice read.
Here is a press release the 49ers sent out on the passing of former co-owner Franklin Mieuli, who died Sunday:
Trent Baalke, the 49ers’ director of player personnel who becomes the team’s top personnel man with the departure of general manager Scot McCloughan, says things will not dramatically change with him in control. Baalke said he is very comfortable with the 49ers’ quarterback situation. And although he could not talk specifically about a trade for a veteran quarterback who might be under contract, he intimated the team is not…
Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft. Now, the two individuals most responsible for selecting Smith are no longer with the 49ers. Mike Nolan, who had the final say on personnel matters at the time, was fired as head coach in 2008. Now, Scot McCloughan, who held the role of director of player personnel in 2005, is no longer with the 49ers as the…
Niners team president Jed York announced today what he described as a “mutual parting” with the 49ers and general manager Scot McCloughan. He did not get into reasons for the breakup of the union, citing it as a “private personnel matter.” Director of player personnel Trent Baalke will take over for McCloughan and lead up the draft. York said he did not know whether the 49ers will hire someone…
Niners team president Jed York said moments ago that the 49ers and general manager Scot McCloughan have mutually decided to part ways.
The 49ers are scheduled to end their orchestrated public silence today at 5 p.m. (PT). Team president and CEO Jed York has promised to join reporters on a conference call. All questions have gone unanswered since news broke here Wednesday of general manager Scot McCloughan’s clouded future with the 49ers. It is unclear, exactly, how detailed York will be in speaking with the media later today. But even a…
The NFL is three weeks into its free-agent signing period. The draft is less than five weeks away. And the 49ers do not have an acting general manager. How will the 49ers cope during this crucial period of time without Scot McCloughan?
On the heels of the dialogue on an earlier post about keeping “personal” matters “personal,” Scot McCloughan had some interesting comments to SIRIUS NFL Radio’s Adam Schein. “Family needs to come first and I lost sight of that with my position at the 49ers,” McCloughan was quoted as saying. “I will be back in league at some point and be very successful.”
The 49ers still have no official comment about the status of general manager Scot McCloughan. In fact, the only person who has gone on the record with anything resembling an update is McCloughan’s agent, Peter Schaffer. What we know, coming from Schaffer, is that McCloughan will not resign from his position with the team. As for a statement, McCloughan text’d me, “One will be put out. Not from me…
When the players reported today for the offseason program, they did not receive much of an explanation of the status of general manager Scot McCloughan. “All they were told was that things were moved out of McCloughan’s office,” one source said. “Everything was vague.” Meanwhile, FanHouse reports the 49ers are “cutting ties” with McCloughan over “a personal matter” not related to team issues. The 49ers did not comment…
So what happens now? How does the tenuous status of 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan impact the 49ers’ preparation for the draft? McCloughan had the final say on draft day the past two years. But in speaking to 49ers coach Mike Singletary at the NFL Scouting Combine last month, he emphasized that the 49ers’ draft board will get the final say.
The status of 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan remains in question this morning after sources told The Press Democrat yesterday that he was considering stepping down from his position as the organization’s top football executive. His agent said McCloughan will not resign from his post. “Scot McCloughan is not resigning as general manager of the San Francisco 49ers,” Denver-based agent Peter Schaffer said moments ago in a brief…
Scot McCloughan is considering stepping down as 49ers general manager, sources told The Press Democrat this evening. The shocking development to the organization’s top football executive takes place just five weeks before the NFL Draft, in which the 49ers own two first-round draft picks. The reasons McCloughan is contemplating resigning were not immediately known. McCloughan did not return numerous phone and text messages seeking comment. Team owner John York and…
Paraag Marathe, the 49ers’ chief negotiator and the keeper of the salary cap, received a promotion last week, the organization confirmed this morning. Marathe has been promoted to the title of executive vice president of football and business operations. The past two seasons, Marathe worked in the capacity of vice president of football operations after spending three seasons as director of football operations.
Jed York has been named team president. He was on the field before the game. He said it’s a formalization of his role with the club.
