Colts appear poised to acquire Garoppolo

With each passing day, the potential landing spots for Jimmy Garoppolo continue to become clearer.

On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts traded quarterback Carson Wentz to Washington. In return for Wentz and a 2022 second-round pick, Indianapolis receives the Commander’s 2022 second and third-round picks and a 2023 third-round pick which could become a second-round pick if the quarterback plays more than 70 percent of plays for Washington.

Indianapolis has been a logical landing spot for Garoppolo from the beginning of the offseason. With Wentz gone, the Colts cutting a deal with San Francisco appears more likely.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, “the Colts are expected to be in the mix” for Garoppolo.

There have been reports out of Indianapolis in recent weeks detailing frustration around a lack of leadership from Wentz.

Leadership is one of Jimmy Garoppolo’s greatest strengths. His teammates are quick to point this out when asked.

On Monday, Arik Armstead became the latest 49er teammate to heap praise upon Garoppolo. Armstead joined “Kings Pregame Live” and was asked about the quarterback.

“Man, I think people got short-term memory loss or something because before Jimmy came. He saved us,” said Armstead. “I won two games, four games, and when Jimmy came, he really turned it around, brought us to the point where we’re at now. I have nothing but love and respect for Jimmy and being able to see what goes into it, what he goes through day in and day out. I wish nothing but the best for him, and that’s my guy.”

During practices for the Pro Bowl, former 49er and current Colt defensive lineman DeForest Buckner was spotted with Garoppolo. Buckner is a Colts captain, and his words carry weight in their building. He may be the 49er’s best chess piece in negotiations.

The draft capital they received from Washington appears to give Indianapolis the means to land Garoppolo. A third-round pick in 2022, 73rd overall, and a conditional third in 2023 which becomes a second based on snaps played would be a win for San Francisco.

  1. Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 48m
From @NFLTotalAccess : Things heated up pretty quickly for the #49ers and Jimmy Garopollo, as the team fielded several calls about his availability. One obvious team is the #Colts.

We are about to see a bidding war between the Panthers, Saints , Colts and Steelers.

  2. i disagree jack! a 3rd, or even 2 of em is not enough. If that is what Wentz is worth…..and JG is an UPGRADE over Wentz……then he should cost more! Plain and simple. I think the Colts 2nd rounder they just got from Wash. is a fair price. The colts could very well get a 2 and a 3 from the wentz deal…….we should at least get one 2nd rnd pick

    1. Good points….but there is a big hurdle that needs to be addressed with Jimmy, and that’s his contract…if the Niners are going to haul in draft choices, such as the Colts did, then they will have to eat a fair percentage of his contract for 2022…nobody will trade a couple #2’s, and agree to swallow that contract as well…

      1. That’s exactly right 55.

People are acting like Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t due to make $26M in the coming season, despite the fact that he can’t even start throwing a football for the next FOUR MONTHS, at the earliest.

People are acting like it’s some kind of secret that the 49ers absolutely need to move Jimmy and clear his $26M salary off of the books in less than a week’s time.

People are acting like Jimmy Garoppolo is the only NFL player on the trade market who knows how to play QB.

People are acting like Jimmy’s been a reliable QB who is ready to immediately step in and get to work acclamating to a new team, a new system, and a new city.

People are acting like Jimmy has been a reliable QB for the 49ers over the last 5 years. People are forgetting that the opposite is true. Jimmy is coming off of yet another injury riddled season of which he absolutely fell apart during the final FIVE games of the season, including the final TEN quarters of the postseason.

People seem to be forgetting that it took Deebo Samuel turning into the most dangerous offensive weapon everytime he touched the football, and almost singlehandedly carrying the 49ers offense in the 2nd half of the season after the 49ers were struggling to score points and even move the football, to even make the playoffs. If Deebo doesn’t turn into an All-Pro RB, or “wide-back”, the 49ers would have almost certainly missed the postseason all-together this past season, despite having one of the best offensive coaching staffs, as well as one of most talented and complete rosters in the entire NFL.

People are confusing a team’s W-L record, as if it’s somehow a Quarterback statistic …. IT’S NOT! In fact, the 49ers BEST stretch of winning football this season also happened to coincide with Garoppolo’s WORST stretch of games. He was absolutely putrid after tearing up his thumb against the Titans, and the 49ers just so happened to catch fire DESPITE Jimmy’s poor play.

And now he’s hurt yet again!

Does this sound like a formula that gives the 49ers ANY kind of leverage in trade talks for a QB who is due $26M in 2022? Not only that, he’s not even signed through 2022, and there’s no guarantee he’s even going to be ready for training camp, or week 1 for that matter. All of this adds up to a high risk, low reward QB who hasn’t exactly lit up the scoreboard during the last 5 years, and in fact hasn’t been the same guy since tearing his ACL in 2018.

I’m guessing that, at a minimum, the 49ers are going to need to pick up somewhere in the neighborhood of the $8M he’s already guaranteed due to this shoulder injury. An injury BTW, that seems to have completely caught the 49ers off-guard this close to the start of the new league year!

I could be wrong, but it sure doesn’t look like the 49ers are riding any kind of trade leverage at this point, and most of the blame falls on the most injury prone starting QB in the NFL, BAR NONE!

  3. I mean I really think you’re underselling Jimmy G here Jack. As a totally reasonable poster on an NFL blog I feel like an equitable trade with Indy would look like this:

    Indy receives Jimmy Garoppolo

    49ers receive:
    DeForest Buckner
    Jonathon Taylor
Pick 42 and Pick 83 in the 2022 draft.

    Make it happen John.

  4. With a pending bidding war on JG, don’t be surprised (as many are), if he nets a first rp, rather than a second rp. It’s all about bidding up the value.
