Cosell says Alex Smith isn’t a “late-in-the-down quarterback”

Here’s what NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell said about Alex Smith Thursday morning on The Murph and Mac Show.

COSELL: “I don’t know what’s in Jim Harbaugh’s head. I don’t know what’s in Alex Smith’s head. I can tell you my sense watching the tape was that Alex was concerned about throwing interceptions. He checked down fairly quickly – if the primary read was not there, he checked it down. Again, I don’t know if he’s told that. But one thing is clear – he’s not really what we call a ‘late-in-the-down quarterback.’ In other words, when he drops black, he plants and throws. If that throw is not there, he doesn’t necessarily stay in the pocket and go through progressions. That’s what I mean by ‘late in the down.’ He’s not really that kind of quarterback.”
