Cowboys put the pressure on rookie QB C.J. Beathard in win against 49ers

SANTA CLARA — Rookie C.J. Beathard’s first game as the 49ers starting quarterback was painful. The Dallas Cowboys pummeled him. He got sacked five times, got hit six other times and the 49ers lost 40-10.

Beathard didn’t play poorly. He threw for 235 yards, ran for 30 yards, ran for one touchdown and converted 6 of 13 third downs — 46 percent. But he fumbled twice and the Cowboys recovered the ball both times.

“I guess that was their game plan, to bring a lot of pressure, which we hadn’t seen them do much of,” Beathard said after the game. “When you’re a rookie, obviously you’re new to the system, they’re trying to see what you know and put you on your heels a little bit.”

The Cowboys did more than put Beathard on his heels a little bit — they put him on his back repeatedly.

  1. Sorry Grant but you never gave Kaepernick these excuses so Hoyer and Beathard get none either. The WR group this year is even an upgrade over Patton and Smith from last year. The problem I see with Beathard is he has no pocket awareness and is pretty slow on his play action almost robotic.

    1. And that’s because I’m not a Kaepernick fan but if I knew Shanahans plan was Hoyer? I mean really! He drafted Beathard when he could’ve drafted Watson or even Mahomes smh

    2. You’re not going to give a rookie QB, in his first start, behind a terrible oline, throwing to wideouts that lead nfl in drops the benefit of the doubt?
Hoyer is one thing, but expect in Beatherd to be prime Aaron Rodgers day one is a bit crazy…. like expecting shanahan to lead a popwarner team to an undefeated season with a super bowl victory.

      1. . like expecting shanahan to lead a popwarner team to an undefeated season with a super bowl victory.

Well Grant Cohn expected it from Chip Kelly.

And no I’m not expecting Beathard to be Aaron Rodgers heck I’m not even expecting him to be Jared Goff.

    3. I was wondering how KS would react if CJB struggled.
      .
KS started by handing Hoyer the starting job with no competition.
      .
KS handed CJB the starting job for the rest of the season. Now this game.
      .
Competition is healthy, and might allow the Niners to win a game.

  2. Beathard is trash. It’s obvious we still need a franchise qb. Beathard can be a career back up. I mean we might as well put hoyer back in. At least he didn’t get blown out.

  3. Interesting, everyone thought rookie Jerrod Goff was a bust last year. He too ran for his life, and got sacked/fumbled repeatedly, behind a terrible OL and an offense which lacked decent receivers. Hurley was also called a washed up under- performer at RB.

Rams now have a decent OL and WR’s…

Guess what? Goff and Hurley are pretty good.

  4. Listen… To build a franchise team, first, start with solidifying the Offensive Line, then Shanahan must use plays to protect the rookie quarterback like short passes to the fullback and tight end, the ball posession must improve to give defense extra rest and strength, remember most of these DL are either rookies or unproven players, give them time to gel in with each other. Stick to this plan for a while until qb gets comfortable, OL line must hold their position and protect CJ Beathard. Who knows i think this rookie quarterback is good enough and tough enough to compete if you give him protection in the pocket.
