Crunch time arrives for 49ers

All of a sudden, the 49ers find themselves in Sarasota, Florida for the week, injured and out of breath after losing two of their past four games and falling to fifth place in the NFC playoff picture.

A month ago, the 49ers were undefeated. Now, they probably have to win all four of their remaining games just to win the NFC West and earn a bye week for the first round of the playoffs.

How did the 49ers end up in this position after such a strong start?

They suffered a last-second defeat to the Seahawks at home, and another last-second defeat to the Ravens in Baltimore last Sunday. This Sunday, the 49ers will play the Saints in New Orleans. The Saints are 10-2. Flying home from the East Coast only to fly back a few days later would exhaust the 49ers and increase their odds of losing a must-win game against an excellent opponent. So they went to sunny Sarasota.

The 49ers have no margin for error to get a first-round bye. They need to finish the season like they started it — flawlessly. Here’s what could stand in the way of a perfect finish.

  1. How did the 49ers end up in this position after such a strong start?

By playing a schedule far stronger than that played in the first half of the season. Any other reason is of tertiary importance.

That said, winning the division is of great importance. Only 11% of wild card teams have won the Super Bowl (6 teams, all between 1980 and 2010). Niners have won only 5 playoff games on the road (Brodie and Montana one each, and three with Kaep) in its franchise history.

    1. Truth. And Wow. We’ve only won 5 playoff games on the ROAD!? Ever?? I wasn’t aware of that Stat. That says a lot about how badly we need to finish strong and win this division.

        1. True. I miss the good old days of just beating the snot out of everyone we played, then making them come to our crib

  2. « The 49ers had the ball. It was fourth and one late in the game.

Normally, Shanahan would call a run. The 49ers are a run-first offense.

Instead, Shanahan went out of character and called a drop-back pass. »

It wasn’t out of character for Shanahan on Sunday. On the previous two 4th down attempts he called drop back passes. Both were converted. The first ended as a touchdown, the second ended as a 1st down on a PI penalty.

    1. Jack, having a reasonable reaction is not okay. We need to yell and scream and call for Kyle Shanahan’s job. After all, he is just Marc Trestman with nepotism. In reality, we all know who the nepotism hire is. (He runs this blog).

The way I see it is that questioning play-calling in retrospect is lazy and boring especially when we are talking about the best coaches. In every game you can go down the X’s and O’s and point out flaws with every team and every player. On sunday, the ravens dude just made a great play. There is a reason that they are 10-2 and are the hottest team in the NFL. The fact that the niners went cross country in the middle of a storm and lost by 3 to this team is extremely impressive. As a fan, I am hopeful of what this team can become. They have real character, toughness, and confidence just like their quarterback.

Btw, I totally agree with your earlier comments regarding the defense and Saleh. To me, grant credits Saleh, a guy whose job he called for simply to have the opportunity to rip Kyle. Saleh is a good defensive coach, but the hype is overblown. The amount of resources invested in this defense make it difficult for anyone to have a bad defense with these guys. Kyle on the other hand has maintained a top 5 offense while not having a first round pick starting for close to 5 weeks this season. That is remarkable. Saleh is good, but losing Saleh would not ruin the 49ers. Kyle is the thing that makes this go along with John Lynch who gets zero credit.

    2. Just 4 weeks ago Grant said how JG doesn’t do well turning his back to the defense in play action. Sounds like Shanahan thinks the same, and avoided JG turning his back to the defense.

      1. No, Chris Simms talked about this. He said that the conditions and field made deep drop play action plays way too risky to be called. He felt that the quarterback could lose his footing very easily coming off of that deep drop. Considering how much play action they used against the packers, this comment is laughably inaccurate and over reactionary. Grant tends to make such assumptions with very little sample size and evidence. We don’t need to fall into that category too. He is wrong 95 percent of the time.

        1. BG, You’re correct. I was being sarcastic. 49erswebzone has some very interesting writers giving more accurate observations with less snark. I use this site for the other side of the coin perspective.

          1. Ah apologies Matt. I also really enjoyed the most recent break down on 49ers Webzone. While those guys are homers, they give us a good breakdown without assumptions as if they know exactly what is going on every play.

    3. True that but 4th and 1 we saw what happend….Kittle was covered it could have been a pick if not batted down….bad play call period

When I saw Jimmy in the shotgun I was like “what the fock?”….it was a worse than a bad play call sorry fans

The TD catch was lucky so was the PI call…..on that play 4th and 1 I would have called swing right with Mostert it worked all game long…gotta go with percentages

Why don’t they just use JWilsonJR on short runs??/ that’s on Shanny there

      1. You should be a head coach in the NFL. You always seem to have it figured out…. well after the fact, but that’s not important. Monty for HC in 2020!!

  3. Regardless of whether the 49ers beat the Ravens, they still probably would have had to win their last 4 games to win the division. And the whole ‘pace yourself’ theme makes no sense to me. The NFC West is so strong this year, the 49ers have had to push for every win, and every game had a must win feel to it. Injuries happen to every team. I’m amazed there aren’t injuries every play with the violent collisions.

Niners still control their destiny and the teams left on their schedule are just as fatigued and beat up as they are. Really excited about these last 4 games. They have an opportunity to do great things this year.

    1. Yes its fun watching Jerry Jones pouting……the guy is a real meddler micro manager…imagine working for that dude YIKES…..now he is watching his high dollar outfit sink= gotta love that

  4. @pressdemocrat how do you employ someone who has zero integrity or professionalism when it comes to doing his job?

This man, Grant Cohn just speculated openly with zero basis that Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t throw the ball away, because he cares more about stats than wins. What basis and sources does this idiot have for this? Of all the stupid garbage written by Cohn over the years, this is hands down the worst. Hopefully in his next big time film break down he will make more assumptions on players without knowing exactly what the play is supposed to do. To quote Dante pettis, what a f-ing joke.

Edit: stop deleting this Grant. Don’t run. Take it like a man. Daddy can’t save you on this one. You wrote some real garbage. Now take it like a man. Stand by it and allow people to read my comment.

  5. Thanks Grant= this is spot on……

Injuries, JimmyP not protecting the ball (8 fumbles, 10ints’ remember the Seatlle game? he threw 5 pics 3 were dropped!!)peaking too soon (good teams are peaking now) piss poor play calling by Shanny at crucial times and another biggie is clock management and timeout management…what happend to the 2minute drill and the 4 minute drill??? there are none on this team…..

Whether you like it or not, Grant keys in on some issues the team has that could hold the team back.

However Frisco has exceeded expectaions= 10 wins with more games to play could mean more wins!!!!!

    1. Thanks, Monty, but you’re going to catch lots of flak today for writing this. People come here to complain about me, not to praise me. Twitter is a nicer, more generous place, somehow.

      1. Grant please stop with the self pity. Especially considering the hot garbage and unfair content that you put out about players. What you wrote just now was a load of garbage. The fact that you questioned jimmy’s integrity with zero basis is laughable. You will be praised if you earn it. Go humble yourself and come to reality.

      2. Agree… the truth hurts I guess…me I am too old for the truth to hurt LOL …hahahaaha thanks Grant

Yes folks on here can be downright rude and unappreciative..

See ya on Twitter my man

          1. “ Appreciate you, Monty.”

            Maybe you….can help Monty…learn how…..to write…..complete sentences….without periods….in between?

              1. You can write my arse Rookie Rena! If grammar is your way to insult me, you’ve got a long way to go there cartoon boy!

              2. Looks like you missed the joke. Working in the word “period” was somewhat deft, if I do say so myself. It wasn’t really about your grammar.

                cartoon boy

Wow. A scathing blow. Whatever will I do now. I have a cartoon character for an avatar. And Prime Cuck pointed it out!

As expected, you’re falling for all the low hanging fruit, apparently too dumb to realise that if I were to be upset about the fact I use a cartoon avatar being recognised and pointed out, I, y’know, just wouldn’t use a cartoon character for an avatar, but what can I say? Prime Cuck manages to disappoint even when held to the lowest of standards. His Mum could tell you all about that KEK

          2. Grant your self pity is hilarious. You have no empathy when you take unprovoked shots at athletes with no basis. Do your job well and most fair readers won’t rip you. If you are angry about my nepotism digs, shed your arrogance and remember the digs you took at shanny and bosa. Go do some reflection on the untrue things you wrote and said about bosa before the draft. You’re immature and not a professional. You reap what you sow my friend.

              1. Well, most “good”and “fair”writers don’t take unprovoked shots at players. They also don’t question a player’s integrity. Don’t play victim Grant. You have run your mouth too much. It’s hurt you a lot this year, because you’ve been wrong on every front. Being measured will take you a lot further in this business.

              2. This has been a very fruitful season for my career. I’ve gained roughly 3,000 followers since July. Business is booming.

              3. To be honest Grant, I think that says more about the current social media sphere than it does about your writing ability, and for the record I think you’re a good writer irrespective of the content sometimes. You did predict 6-10, despite having all the advantages at your disposal in terms of access to the team. That alone should be held as a rub against you this season.

              4. I mean sure Grant, if you want to be the Walmart skip bayless I guess you’re trending in the right direction. Skip is also a Vanderbilt grad and an excellent writer. He also has a great grasp on how to be engaging and entertaining. If you believe that you have those traits then all the power to you. It still doesn’t give you the right to openly question athlete’s integrity on written columns especially when it isn’t sourced. That’s very unprofessional.

              5. Grant, I am glad you are doing so well, but honestly, it may be because the Niners are 10-2.
                .
Just imagine if they had been 11-0-1! Then you may have gotten 5K new followers!

              6. Comparing Grant to Skip, is an insult to Grant. ;p
                .
Grant is good at analysis, and calls it like he sees it. Skip is a Cowboy toadie and trolls everyone.

              7. This has been a very fruitful season for my career. I’ve gained roughly 3,000 followers since July. Business is booming.

Does this mean you are preparing to move on to more fruitful pastures?

              8. Skip is also a Vanderbilt grad and an excellent writer.

And also in an income bracket, I’d say, about 100 times greater than Grants.

              9. “ Business is booming“

But the content sucks and all the old followers who were good are all gone.
                Best business is repeat business.

              10. The fact you think I’m here for you is a shame. I don’t read one article you write, listen to you play microphone with your buddy in his bedroom, or read any game analysis ever.
I’m here for the posters that were here way before you. Dumb a$$!

              11. I’m here to read guys insights into the team. Ive always stated that.
It just so happens you’ve drawn so many people on the blog who have zero clue about football and the Niners in general.
I believe I can call out their ignorance when they trash the players and the coaches and the management if I disagree. As a fan I believe I’m entitled.
Seb gets it causes he trashes Shanny and his ridiculous football acumen. You get it cause you trash everyone. Rena and Monty get it cause they are just plain idiots.
                Who did I leave out?

              12. Get along? You think I care about making friends here on this forum? Come on Grant. Don’t embarrass yourself.
The guys I respect and read know who they are. Wether they think of me as a friend or a jerk makes no difference to me. They know how much passion I have for the 49ers. That’s all that matters.

          3. Grant,
Your football IQ has truly increased over the years right before my eyes. I can appreciate this area of growth in you.

What has slowed down your progress (imo) is your penchant for taking the liberty to make personal comments regarding players weight issues (Aaron Lynch) and how their voice sounds (Anthony “Bam” Davis) or a player who no longer has legs (Frank Gore).
Also your remark that NYG O-lineman Will Hernandez’ arms being so short that he can’t put down in his pockets was absolutely unwarranted.

If you are going to make these kinds of remarks you should also expect some push back from your readers.

              1. Don’t forget the nepotism shots at bosa and shanny. The questioning of bosa’s toughness. The recent questioning of jimmy’s integrity. Yet, little spoiled bratty Grant bans me for pointing out that the only reason he has a platform is because of good old Daddy! It sounds like someone who dishes it out with their chest puffed out, but if anyone points out the obvious they they’re an idiot they go and cry to mommy.

              2. Grant,
                “push away.”

Now that’s funny. I think you should know that I’m not here because of you. In fact, I come here in spite of you.

The posters are the real stars here. I come here because of them.
I’ll be here until I decide to go and hopefully after you push away.

              3. I think you should know that I don’t come here for you, either. In fact, I come here in spite of you.

Lots of people seem to like my work even if the eight of you don’t. I appreciate that you follow it so closely nonetheless.

              4. Can you get any more childish in your replies? You need to grow up, your father should be ashamed of you.

              5. Grant,
“Lots of people seem to like my work even if the eight of you don’t. I appreciate that you follow it so closely nonetheless.”

Sure, I’d agree with that comment. You do have lot of fans. But unfortunately, we don’t have the option to have someone else do your job. I would venture that many of your fans would drop you if they were given the opportunity to have Maiocco back.

You readership relies on posters, chasing those who don’t agree with your delivery can have eventual negative ramifications.

Losing posters like rocket and bro. tuna were big losses imo. Yup, maybe there are eight here who don’t agree. But there are those who realized it was a waste of time coming here and no longer comment. No journalists or writer has ever received a 100% loyal following.
The “push away” method won’t keep me from reading what the regular posters come here to comment on.

              6. Maiocco still writes. You’re free to go to his blog. My readership is much bigger than the eight people who comment here constantly.

              7. Grant, Dante pettis says the same thing when you rip him. A lot of people think he’s a good football player even if you don’t. You seem to follow him closely even if we don’t. Do I hear a pot calling a kettle black?

              8. We are not your problem either. You are your problem. This garbage that you write… how do you publish an article where you question the integrity of someone with no evidence? There is a reason that you’re the laughing stock of the niners “bloggers.”

              9. I think his point is that he doesn’t come to read this blog for you. He reads Maiocco and comes to discuss in the comment section with the other people in this blog. People he has corresponded with long before your career existed. It’s not his fault that your daddy got you a job for this blog. He would be here regardless of who the writer is. He is just unlucky that it’s you.

              10. You clearly have a problem, because you just complained how we are being “mean “ you.

              11. Grant, you will never improve your craft if you feel you ha e reached your apex within it, like your “I don’t have a problem” retort would imply. You do, Grant. Or rather, I sure hope you do. Your problem should be hoe you get better. I know you think of these things, because of how you talk of your belief that play and film analysis is the future of sports journalism. Your emotions are getting the better of you here, and you sre coming across as increasingly egotistical and arrogant – traits that I believe you do posses in some capacity, but not nearly to the extent that your comments here would have one believe. Stop getting so buttblasted about criticism and look as to why it exists. I know many of the posters criticising are flawed themselves, deeply even, but there is a reason they make it. If nothing else, you can at least make a showing of them by debunking their ideas. This is just pathetic, and wild.

              12. I’m not emotional. I’m having a wonderful day.

                Buttblasted? How old are you?

All I see is the same eight people who usually criticize me continue to criticize me. The reviews on Twitter were overwhelmingly positive about this article.

              13. “The reviews on Twitter were overwhelmingly positive about this article.”

You had 8 responses, 2 were from Monty and 2 from Chris. The others were not so positive.

              14. “Maiocco still writes. You’re free to go to his blog. My readership is much bigger than the eight people who comment here constantly.”

What makes you think that I don’t read Maiocco? He’s the quintessential 49ers reporter in the region (imo).
Why should you react defensively that only eight people here find fault or disagree with you?
A lot of disagreements come from the very poop that you’ve created. If the stench of your poop still lingers in the air (especially given your comments on Gore and Bam Davis, among others) at least man-up and don’t play the victim. Perhaps the eight people would learn to appreciate you better if you did.

              15. Right jack. I also saw that. Chris and month are his Jason garrett. They’d clap for him even if he committed a crime.

              16. I’m not emotional. I’m having a wonderful day.

That’s why you’re spending it here, complaining about people being harsh on you.

                Buttblasted? How old are you?

You have vague, seemingly arbitrary filters set up that auto queue posts into a moderation queue that never see the light of day. Simply saying “very upset” doesn’t really convey the mixture of anger and sadness you are projecting here, and any other words I could use might result in being hit with the filter. What alternative would you suggest?

All I see is the same eight people who usually criticize me continue to criticize me. The reviews on Twitter were overwhelmingly positive about this article.

Well, I mean those reviews are coming from people who follow you, and you specifically, and they’re replying to you personally. It’s really not much of an accomplishment.

I do not know which 8 you are referring to. I hate how vague you are with it, because I don’t know if I’m included in that 8, and thus I can’t defend against it. All I know is you’re fallaciously attempting to minimise critique as a fault on the ones critiquing, rather than engaging with it honestly. It’s a poor look.

              17. I’ve got zero personal beef with you Grant, you’re a good guy, just think you’ve got some bad takes in this piece.

              18. You’ve been tearing me down for weeks. It feels personal. I genuinely wanted you to make it as a sports writer. I’m not the reason you didn’t make it. You know why you didn’t make it.

              19. I know why he didn’t make it. His last name is not Cohn. If he was jack Cohn, he would’ve made it.

Doesn’t that sound eerily similar to a few unprovoked shots taken at bosa and shanny earlier this year by one Grant Cohn. Notice I also had no information on the topic. I just shot from the hip.

              20. I’m sorry if you feel that way.

As for why I didn’t make it as a writer, that probably has a lot to do with quitting to focus more on a family issue that came up which you know nothing about. It was fun writing for 49erswebzone, thanks for the help there, and a couple other places but there’s only so much time in the day and I chose to walk away instead of doing a half-ass effort just to hang around.

              21. “I know why he didn’t make it. His last name is not Cohn. If he was jack Cohn, he would’ve made it.”

If you want to go after Grant, go ahead, but leave me out of it.

              22. “That’s not what I’m talking about.”

Yeah, that’s what I figured. You may be right, but I’m pretty happy with the life I’ve built since.

              23. Sorry Grant I took the chance to take a gratuitous shot at Grant based on the garbage he’d written earlier this year.

              24. Ah, yes the nepotism screed.
                .
Grant may have gotten his foot in the door with some help, but he would not keep his job if he were not competent, and could not write. I come to this site to read what Grant writes, not Lowell. This would be like saying KS got his job because of Mike. KS got his job because he got past help from his father, but he also showed competence and success, like having the Niners at 10-2. When he was at 4-12, some questioned if he would fulfill his contract. I just wish he would learn from his mistakes, and not repeat them. Then I will give him high praise and celebrate even more winning.
                .
Those who diss Grant for his observations about Dante Pettis, do not have a clue. Just like his analysis of Bowman, Grant was spot on and he was one of the first, telling the truth about him. Pettis could not handle the truth, so he attacked the messenger, but he has proven to be a less than mediocre player. No wonder they traded for Emmanuel Sanders. Pettis called Grant a joke, but he is the real joke. Now, he has not played for a while, because he benched himself. Pettis does not need Grant to tell the truth, he has the coaches shouting that in his ear.
                .
Yes, some old posters have left, but maybe it is time for some new blood. Blog sites change and evolve, and some posters are like MW, who pass on, and are missed. i would welcome BT back, and scrupulously avoid him, but he cut and ran. Rocket was called out for being a fraud, so he is not missed by me.
                .
To me, this site is a must read. I peruse many other sites, but this is edgy, and refreshing. I endure this peanut gallery, because it is worth reading Grant. His periscopes and game breakdowns are illuminating and informative.
                .
I do not come here to get satisfaction from the peanut gallery. I come here because this site is real, and is hard hitting. If I wanted rainbows and unicorns, and homeristic pablum, I could visit many other sites. There are thousands of other sites to choose from.
                .
Grant has a unique writing style, that many do not recognize and value, but they still come here. Keep up the good work, Grant. There is at least one die hard faithful Niner fan who appreciates good writing, and I look forward to your insights. You keep it real, and keep me grounded. I love the Niners, warts and all, and hunger for a 6th ring.
                .
You do not need to respond, because you will get even more snark.

              1. Lots of people read my work and don’t comment on this blog. And most of the people who do comment on this blog discuss me most of the time, not the 49ers.

              2. Stop acting like a petulant child Grant. People discuss you on this blog because of the garbage you write. You thought it was fair to imply that Garoppolo cares more about stats than wins with no evidence. If you have zero professionalism as a journalist do you expect people to pat you on the back? Take some responsibility for your actions. This self pity is laughable. Where is the same outward arrogance when you pompously told us bosa wouldn’t play week 1 because he is soft?

              3. Great! What do you want for that a cookie? If you didn’t have a dad with a reputation in the business or if you wrote for a reputable paper you would be fired. Your speculation in this article was unprofessional and unprovoked. All of us are pushing back, because we know that in our real non nepotism world, we get fired for such irresponsible behavior.

              4. You think I should get fired because I said Garoppolo would rather take a sack than throw the ball away. Good call.

Some people live to ruin other people’s lives.

              5. People pat me on the back every day.

Oh brother. What a poor reply.

Some people live to ruin other people’s lives.

Rich, given how critical you are and that you are in a position that can directly affect someone’s career if they don’t handle what you say in the right way. I like how critical you sre, mostly, but come on. Do you have any self awareness whatsoever?

              6. Yeah, I definitely tried to ruin Garoppolo’s life in this piece. He’s cancelled now.

              7. First of all you implied that he cares more about stats then wins with zero evidence. That is extremely irresponsible and unprofessional.

                Second,

“Some people live to ruin other people’s lives.”

This is the most hypocritical statement of all time. What were your intentions when you questioned Garoppolo do’s integrity as a football player and commitment to win?

Third, by me calling for your job, you are clearly ruined. Just like jimmy. Take ownership of your trash.

              8. Did I say that, Grant? No. I’m saying you don’t stop to consider the effects of what you say and how they can hurt players. You can argue it’s not your job too. That’s fine, but you don’t get to take the moral highground here either.

              9. Sure you do, Grant. Just, like I said, you don’t consider how what you write can affect a player. If a young player makes a mistake, and you on cue rip him to shreds, resulting in even more comments from your readers ripping the guy, how does he respond? If he loses confidence, well that can easily be that for his career. Is that your fault? Maybe not. But my point is that the way you write is a razor thin edge. It will not make you very popular with the players. You generally own that, but you should know that by doing so you lose any moral highground you otherwise would have. It’s the nature of the beast, after all.

              10. No, I really don’t have that much power. You think too highly of me. I might have the power to make a player angry for five minutes, but nothing more.

              11. Renas, we are trying to smash a square peg in a round hole. This won’t work. Grant is too hard headed and arrogant. I forgot how perfect he is. He is allowed to openly question the character of other man because daddy got him a platform. We cannot question him though, because His burner accounts Monty and chris “love” him.

Edit: also Grant as a “professional” you have no right to question without evidence someone’s intentions or character in a published piece. That’s bush league and if you worked somewhere else or in any other line of work you’d be submitting an apology along with a retraction. It’s too bad daddy only could get you a job for this irrelevant blog where you make nothing(see how I am mimicking you with unprovoked shots). Nobody cares about you enough to reprimand you.

              12. No, I really don’t have that much power. You think too highly of me. I might have the power to make a player angry for five minutes, but nothing more.

That requires a player to have a specific character ability, one which you do not know is present, especially with a young player. Maybe you don’t really appreciate the mental part of the sport, that requires you to tune out a lot of noise. We can see you wouldn’t be made of the right stuff, given by your responses here.

BG, you’re right. It’s fundamentally a waste of time, I guess.

              13. If my critiques cause a professional athlete to lose confidence, he’s not cut out to be a professional athlete. Pro athletes are much more confident and strong-willed than you understand. They use criticism as motivation.

              14. Does Dante Pettis not count? He’s a good example of someone who doesn’t seem to respond well to criticism. Not every athlete reacts the same way.

              15. ‘Nobody cares enough to reprimand you.’ -BG
                .
You care so much, you have posted numerous screeds. You care too much. Your name defines you. Another burner account.
                .
Renas, Even JG has said that he does not read what the media thinks about him. He also said that even if something does get through to his attention, he will not let it bother him. He certainly will not let them see him sweat. He will be unconcerned, insouciant, and just concentrate on improving and winning games.

              1. He wont quit, and he wont take advice from people who offer it freely and kindly.
Actually he might run in the opposite direction…..

      3. Grant, the usual suspects (Prime Cuck, Ribycho, et al) have shown that they will mock and flame anyone they decide to not like, regardless of what that person actually says. In fact, they’ve even proven that they’ll take something that is in full agreement with them, and then claim it’s the opposite, all so they can get their jibes in. And when this is presented to them, they will deflect and double down, afraid to concede even the smallest ground lest their “credibility” on this blog be brought into question. Quite embarrassing to see actually, although it reminds me of forum culture which these days is kind of dead, so it’s sweet to see at the same time. The point is, comments like yours seems to suggest that their garbage gets to you. It’s exactly the same as any dumb troll, just a different flavour. They play their roles, and are sonewhat entertaining, in their own way. I mean, have you ever seen Prime Cuck try to make a legible, intelligent argument? Cracks me up every time!

        1. “ they’ve even proven that they’ll take something that is in full agreement with them, and then claim it’s the opposite, all so they can get their jibes in.

Rookie Rena, facts! You should learn about how important they are then just your simple minded opinions.

          1. Looks like you’ve already forgotten last time, where you took me saying one thing (that the team can win three road playoff games), and insisted I said the complete opposite, before refusing to concede the point for reasons I guess only you could understands. I can literally go back and get quotes, if you’d like me to prove it? It would be a fact then, yes? Assuming you understand what a fact is, which, given your posts on here, might be giving you too much credit LMAO

Of course, you won’t. You’re too much of a cuck to confront when you’re wrong, hence why you’re called “Prime Cuck”.

            1. Renas let it go. Your grammar and writing is phenomenal. Frankly, I think you should be writing for a paper and maybe for this blog. You really are a phenomenal writer. Don’t waste words on a meaningless argument.

Prime, I have been a reader of this blog for a while . I don’t participate but I’ve read a lot of your posts. You can be rude at times, but I enjoy your posts. No need for this argument. Just continue to rip Seb:). I particularly enjoy those digs:).

              1. I’m far too emotional about sports in general to write in any form of professional capacity about them, but I appreciate the compliment all the same.

I actually once considered trying to write on tennis, and given the quality of journalism in that field I reckon I could do a halfway decent job even. Though I’d end up way too starstruck when it comes to some players.

              2. I’m only rude to these wanna be try hards who think they know everything.
Case in point this guy who runs this blog who says he follows the team but doesn’t even travel with them. How does a professional writer write for the team when he isn’t around them? Then these try hard followers say he is right?
You want to be respected and have your opinion mean something, be an extension of the team and not make crap up from your living room!

              3. Oh prime I’m with you on Grant. I totally agree. I will continue to enjoy your posts on him for sure :).

              4. No, you are trying too hard. Declaring you only push back against me because you think I do not know football is deliciously ironic.
                .
Your own posts are vacuous in content, and you just state the obvious.
                .
‘Bad Grant’ is not a first time poster, and is just another burner account.
                .
My ideas may be controversial, but I like to think outside the box.
                .
I still think that KS should consider time outs to be precious, and saved for legitimate challenges, and the last 2 minutes of each half. Last game, KS squandered time outs, and could not stop the clock.
                .
Guess you like wasting time outs like a drunken sailor, and think that possibly playing twice in the Clink and/or New Orleans is a good idea.
                .
I think that the smart way, would be to play there only once. However, that logic eludes you, covered in bombast, and macho bravado.

              5. ‘I am only rude to these wannabe try hards…’- Prime.
                .
Glad you admit you are rude. That is your MO. Rude and insulting.

            2. Renas its just a pitty piss throwing contest here…..ignore the idiots….they feed off crap and are crap= deep down they are miserable people….at least Seb is not harrassing folks anymore LOL…hahahaha

hope the idiot likes this …. and this …… and this …………….. want more ……..here ya go…………LMAO what a loser

        2. Grant, the usual suspects (Prime Cuck, Ribycho, et al) have shown that they will mock and flame anyone they decide to not like

Sure, don’t we all just love someone who spouts negative hot takes after 5 whole minutes of observation?

          1. Um, no? You keep referring to that, but you keep missing that I qualified it with “making plays”, which they then proceeded to do so. They had left three big plays on the field, which was a huge problem last year, and then once Kwon went out they made them (correlation does not imply causation, I know). I specifically worded my hot take to that it would be moot once they starting making plays. Was it too quick on the draw? For sure. I’m not going to defend it lol. But for some reason, it pissed you off so much you’ve obsessed about it all season long. Why on Earth do you care so much? It’s practically set you off on a Taken-style personal vendetta kek.

              1. But that was far from my first comment on the blog, lol. Besides, I think it says more about you if one (1) dumb comment that came in the moment is enough for you to not let it go for MONTHS. I’d understand if I had defended it, because then arrogance would be playing a part, at which case yeah I’d have earned it. But pretty much minutes later I had retracted it. But for some reason it just craws at you so hard you can’t get over it. I’ve never actually seen that before, I must admit. I’m pretty sure most people would have long forgotten it by now. It’s not even like it was ever a huge deal that’s now just a funny story. I don’t get it. I don’t get you. I don’t get why you care so much about it. I’m also not sure why I’d care about “first impressions” here, on an anonymous blog. If appearences were so important, I could simply use a different email, avatar and username, and “Renas” will have simply stopped posting. That’s the benefit of anonymity. It honestly seems psychotic to me.

              2. It has stuck with me because you made that take on the part of team that been it’s absolute strength this year.

Ok, we all make mistakes. That’s the last of it from me. Peace out Renas.

              3. Oh and BTW, some people think you can learn more from losses (criticism) than from wins (praise).
Hummm, what do you think Grant?

              4. But I made it before it had proven itself to be a strength. Not by much, granted, because it then went and proved it in that very game, but it’s not like I claimed it was trash vs Arizona or something. I would fully understand if I had used a racial slur of some kind against Kwon, or whomever, because then that would point to my possessing an unsavoury character, but there was nothing of that nature at all. I retracted it very soon after, and make no attempt to claim it was something other than what it was – a dumb, emotional in-the-moment complaint fueled by setting the record for lack of big plays (turnovers) last season, and seeing that trend appear to rear its ugly head once more. And then they started making those plays, and then made some more, so I was left with a dumb take. Is it the dumbest thing said on this blog this year? Given the context, I doubt it. It’s just really confusing how you wouldn’t leave it to rest. Maybe now you will. I dunno.

      4. Grant, that’s funny how you take it all so personal.
Like you said before, what you write is just your opinion. That doesn’t mean that people can’t poke holes in it or have a different view. It certainly doesn’t mean that what you write is always right. Even though you do your research better than you used to, your analysis is better than it used to be, your interpretation of the facts is still your opinion.
        Nothing more.

  6. Yes and I called that the Seattle game going forward is when “the rubber meets the road” …. so far 1 win 2 losses…..

    Maybe Shanny needs new tires

    1. 2 wins, 2 losses. Lost to Seattle, then beat Cards and Packers, lost to the Ravens. I wouldn’t put too much stock in what Grant is saying with the “they are .500” thing. So are the Patriots. Last year the Patriots wwre were like 1-3 late November – early December. You want to play your best stuff now, but it’s not like if you struggle a bit you can’t heat up for the postseason.

  7. « He would rather take a sack than throw the ball out of bounds and lower his completion percentage. »

Holy moly! How did I miss this? Surely you’ve got to be kidding

    1. Actually Joe Montana used to always always throw the ball out of bounds…we never ever see Jimmy do that…..may not be for the reasons grant states but it does hold true

      1. Monty, I know you love Grant, but that is not the point. It is extremely unprofessional and unethical for grant to write such garbage. If he wrote for any reputable publication, he would be fired and excoriated for lack of ethics. Such speculation is immature and juvenile. It is extremely unprofessional. This is a guy who writes, speaks, and reacts like a fan. He has a platform because his dad got a job and he handles it like a spoiled brat.

        1. If you guys don’t like Grant’s content go for a hike…or take a hike LOL

You guys bag on Grant and me and whoever else is honest but you still hang around to complain….

I like Grant’s take because its honest….he doesn’t candy coat or become a homer….go watch the film it doesn’t lie

            1. PT, “Honest” = endlessly negativity.

That’s Grant’s job , to keep the eyeballs riled. I have no idea what monty’s deal is. He must be an absolute joy to be around in RL.

          1. Monty you like Grant’s take because it mirrors your own negativity. You have spewed nothing but negative garbage going back to the offseason and maybe more but that’s as far back as I go. You whine and complain win or lose so it is no surprise you like somebody who does nothing but post dumb opinions that focus on the negative angle. His takes are not honest. They are ignorant and uneducated in the sport he somehow has a job covering. That fits you perfectly because just like Cohn you have been wrong about pretty much everything you’ve said. Keep up the bad work.

            1. They hired Grant because he can write. He proves it every time. He is edgy, and evokes emotions.
              .
You obviously like this site, because you bother to post here. The best way to show contempt, is to just ignore what you do not like.
              .
Grant asks the hard questions, nobody else dares to.

      2. “Actually Joe Montana used to always always throw the ball out of bounds…we never ever see Jimmy do that…..”

        Totally false

        1. BS been watching Frisco for over 50 years…yes Joe threw out of bound a lot…I mean a lot .. no play forming =he tosses out of bounds over and over and over…..

      3. I do think Jimmy perhaps doesn’t kill off plays quickly enough, resulting in some ill-advised throws and fumbles, but I don’t think it’s about stats. The stat argument is really, REALLY dumb actually because it requires one to ignore the existence of the biggest black mark against any QB – interceptions. If Jimmy cared about his stats to the point he will take sacks purposefully (a negative play) over throwing the ball away then he likewise wouldn’t force the ball resulting in some turnovers – he’d take the easy throws and some intermediate ones, and rarely the high-grade difficulty ones due to this. I think Jimmy just needs to learn when to throw the ball in the ground, but that comes with experience.

        1. Renas true that…Jimmy is learning on the fly and is bound to make lots of mistakes he is basically a rookie

    2. Holy moly! How did I miss this? Surely you’ve got to be kidding

True, that is some remarkable BS supposition on Grants part. His lowest low blow yet.

    3. Almost everything he said in this pile of garbage has no facts to back it up. Garoppolo will stand in the pocket and hold the ball, sometimes to his own detriment, to make a play. It has nothing to do with worrying about stats. The guy is courageous and doesn’t bail when facing pressure. He also throws into extremely tight windows which he wouldn’t if he were worried about his stats. All these years Grant Cohn has covered the team and he still doesn’t know what he’s talking about. That’s why he’s still here when others before him have moved on to bigger and better things. When the only thing you can hang your hat on is adding Twitter followers, it says a lot.

  8. But the 49ers played harder than every other team in the first part of the season and wore themselves down. Now, they limp into the most important month of the schedule, December.

LOL… If you’re not playing/working hard then what are you doing? Thank god Shanahan’s thought process is complete opposite of this. An argument could be made the bye came way to early but this team isn’t looking for excuses, they’re looking to dominate. Teams looking “to pace themselves” will be on the couch come January (much like Grant when the team goes on the road).

    1. I tell ‘ya, Grant would make a tremendous football coach. My gut tells me he has untapped, top drawer leadership abilities. His football moxie is unparalleled so that box is checked. Get Grant some time with young men, a coaching staff, etc. and hone his leadership skills under all conditions–good and bad. Sky’s the limit. Let’s go Grant!

Book it. Grant in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a coach, 2051.

  9. Viewership must be down… hot take Grant is back at it.

Jimmy doesn’t take sacks becuase he is worried about his stats???
Why does he try to fit the ball into tight windows then? I guess he is to stupid to realize that int’s hurt his numbers more than incompletions? Well… I guess Grant did also openly speculate that Jimmy was not very intelligent.

    The 49ers haven’t paced themselves?
I wonder if Grant is arguing that a team that has struggled to get wins for several years now should have “held back” a little bit as they surely knew they were a playoff team? Maybe they could have sat all the players who have more than 5 years NFL experience every other game for the first half of the season to keep them fresh for the stretch run :D.

    1. The pacing argument was nonsense by default. Too much work goes in each week with gameplanning and training and players hitting each other violently for any coaching staff to get away with halfassing it. No way any team tells its players after a loss “it’s okay, we are in our jogging phase now so we’re giving you guys a pass this week”. It’s not basketball, where the stars for teams that are not pacing themselves play way too many minutes and come playoff time have nothing left in the tank (Harden). There are only 16 games, and every game is important. The key reason people say you want to play your best in December is it’s hard to turn it on when you’ve limped in cold and low on confidence. But I remember Aaron Rodgers a few years back saying how momentum doesn’t easily transfer week to week. It’s not like the Niners suddenly can’t do what made them successful early on. They can still run the ball. They can still play defence. The losses are frustrating, incredibly so, but that’s all they are.

  10. Pessimistic sensationalism at its worst. Is there a team in week 14 which doesn’t have nagging injuries. Kittle, Ford , Sanders and Sherman are a full go. Meanwhile Kiko Alonso has not practiced all week. Oh, and Ford ,the nice guy , bought a kid a guitar for Christmas.

    Happy Holidays.

  11. Grant, can you explain how other teams pace themselves in the first half of the season???
    Thanks

  12. Grant just repeated what I have been saying about KS, and his clock and game management, so it is no wonder the peanut gallery and burner accounts are in high gear, dissing him. KS should just run the dang ball. KS should hve enough confidence in his team, so he will believe the Niners can gain a single yard running the ball. They should learn from the Ravens.
    .
I also said that KS and JG need to be on top of their game, in order to beat the Saints. Sean Payton and Drew Brees may be slightly superior to JS and JG, but any given Sunday…..
    .
Grant wrote that JG does not have good ball security, which I totally agree with, but some think that JG is a God, and pointing out his flaws is heresy. Like Grant says, JG needs to throw the ball away, instead of hanging onto the ball, and letting himself get gang tackled and stripped of the ball. Throwing the ball out of bounds will hurt his completion percentage, but possibly help his team win, by reducing turnovers.
    .
Yes, Grant went pessimistic, because the Niners are injured and tired, but attrition is part of the game, and he is calling it like he sees it. JG and the coaching need to reduce the unforced errors, and be smart, sharp, efficient and effective in order to win.
    .
I am hoping we see another early Saints/Falcons game. The 1-7 Falcons stymied the 7-1 Saints. However, the Saints learned from their mistakes, and trounced the Falcons in their last meeting. Payton had a way better game plan, and bludgeoned the Falcons with 9 sacks. The Saints made adjustments, I hope the Niners can do the same.
    .
I think the 49 defense is superior to the Saints offense. They held the high powered Ravens offense to 3 points in the second half. Brees is not going to gallop for 101 yards. They just need to play fast, focused and disciplined, and play NINER DEFENSE. Defense wins championships, so the Niners need to defeat the Saints, and win out, so the Niners do not need to return to New Orleans.
    .
The Niner offense needs to see JG play smart and flawless. They must run the ball and be balanced, so the Saints defense cannot guess if it will be a run or pass. If given time, JG can shred the Saints secondary, so the O line needs to play cohesively, and in sync. I hope to see lots of short crossing routes, and attack Vonn Bell deep. They need to stop using Coleman, and utilize Wilson more. If they stubbornly continue to use Coleman, just expect another 5 carries for 6 yards. They need to make sober assessments, and shrewd adjustments. Richie James deserves more snaps.
    .
Despite all the negative pushback, I am still predicting a Niner victory. I want the Niners to improve, and I want the Niners to win. The Niners may have the Saints score more times, but if JG and KS are bold, and score TDs instead of settling for field goals, the Niners may prevail.
    .
    Niners 24-23.
    .
    GO NINERS !!!!!!

    1. Grant just repeated what I have been saying

Sorry, you aren’t letting Grant off this easy.

      1. Reading is fundamental. Look at what I wrote, and look at what Grant wrote. Since you dote on my every word, you should be able to see the the exact same argument. The SB KS should have run the ball. In the Ravens game, he should have run the ball.

        1. Sebbie… Remind me again. Who was the Atlanta defensive coordinator during their Super Bowl? And the HC? Every ‘lead’ Falcon coach had their fingers in the pie–so to speak. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.

            1. Those plays that. he. called. got them a nice lead the defense. couldn’t. protect.

              Funny how a team works.

              1. He also called for a 7 step drop that led to a Freeman whiff and a strip sack fumble. Changed the momentum of the game.
                .
Calling 3 pass plays that moved them out of field goal range, will define the SB KS.

              2. Seb is the ultimate tool.

The entire 2nd half of that Atl – NE SB was ALL KS fault, in Sebs mind. Lets not forget that they had a 28 – 3 score at with 8 minutes left in the 3rd.

Hmmm…what changed, could it have been the DEFENSE? Anyone who watched that game saw the defense go from being aggressive to playing prevent, and you saw Brady working his way down the field time and time again.

4 drives of 72 or more yards (72, 75, 75, and 91) in that second half, all lead to 3 TDs and 1 FG.

Compare that to the first half where you had 4 punts, a fumble, a Int and a Field Goal.

You know, maybe if the defense could have stopped NE one time, ONE TIME, with 8 minutes left in the 3rd, 23 minutes left in the game, they might have won. Atlanta’s defense did nothing, every NE drive after the 8 minute mark of the 3rd quarter resulted in a score (except the drive that ended regulation). 5 drives, 4 TDs and 1 FG. Pathetic defense.

But no…it was only KS who messed up.

              3. Yup, run the ball 3 times in field goal range, get even closer, and win a SB.
                .
Then it does not matter what the defense did.
                .
Of course, the logic of that eludes you, who thinks fakes are not part of the game.

              1. I mean, you went out of your way to let us all know how much you didn’t read it. One might claim I’m not flattering myself enough, given the circumstances…

          1. Why did you read it, then?
            .
Next, you will say you scrolled past, which just means you do not have any right to criticize my opinions.
            .
I did not write this for you. It is way over your reading comprehension level.

            1. Slowly but surely sebnoying comes back with his ad hominem attacks.
I knew his football acumen isn’t big enough to keep him afloat.

              1. Dang, I thought my riposte was a zinger. ;p
                .
Guess you also think that fakes in football do not exist.
                .
I am glad you read my posts, but you should really just scroll past.

        2. Reading is fundamental.

When it comes to your peristalsis end result, reading is a fundamental waste of time. Scanning the first couple of words is all that’s needed.

          1. Thanks for proving my point. Speaking with no knowledge defines you.
            .
You do not like my posts, yet do not read what I write. This just reminds me of this quote- ‘ignorance is bliss.’

            1. Speaking with no knowledge defines you.

If we’re seeking knowledge, your posts would be the very last place I’d turn to. In fact, the few times I’ve forced myself to read through one of your regurgitations, I felt a distinct knowledge reduction.

    2. « the Niners are injured »

They lost one starter, Tartt, the only other guys out are a backup defensive lineman and a WR that has a total of 2 catches the last 7 weeks.

          1. My point was they were/are starters, and I think should count towards the injury headcount. Though you could argue losing Staley isn’t that huge given how his replacement has filled in for him.

              1. I dunno, I really, REALLY rate Trent. Have since his rookie year. Maybe it’s personal bias, but I easily see him as a top three receiver on this team.

      1. I think his point was the 49ers aren’t any more injured than other teams around the league and he’s right. In fact they are getting healthier after suffering through some key injuries that past few weeks.

  13. Strange, but it seems the better the Niners do the more jaded and bitter the comments become. I don’t think it’s on you Grant, most of the people on this blog just care too much about their team and now with the playoffs so much in focus everything gets ramped/amped up. Keep up the good work!

    1. The comments directed at Grant on this thread are the result of his asinine opinions in the article. As was mentioned above, you get crap when you write crap. Garoppolo has his faults, but saying he is purposely taking sacks because he’s worried about stats is about the dumbest thing I’ve ever read here and that’s saying something. The 49ers are suffering because they played harder than anybody else earlier in the season? Seriously? That is the analysis of somebody who doesn’t have a clue. This kid is a laughing stock on other 49er sites for a reason.

  14. Grant…

I truly hope you haven’t lost interest in compiling a ‘Best Of Grant’s Blog‘ publication. Lots of great material is flying by…

  15. It’s week 14. Every team in the playoff race is in crunch time. Every 10-2 team in the NFC controls their own destiny. The 49ers are in a fantastic position to be the #1 seed and we’re in December. I’m ecstatic with that result. If any person on this blog predicted at the beginning of the season that the 49ers would be 10-2 then Grant and every other poster here, including me, would have said you were crazy. Every argument Grant posted is a justified criticism except the idea that the 49ers played too hard which led to injuries. I’m not sure I’ve ever read anything more ignorant in my entire life. What’s the alternative? Only playing half as hard as normal so you can protect yourself from injuries? Playing too hard didn’t make Jaquiski Tartt use exceptionally poor tackling form and break his ribs. Playing too hard didn’t make a Cardinals d-lineman fall on Kittle’s leg and injure him. Playing too hard didn’t cause Richard Sherman to twist his knee. The only reason to write the 49ers played too hard and are now suffering injuries is because you want to blame Kyle Shanahan for the injuries. That’s just plain old fashioned stupid right there.

    1. Every argument Grant posted is a justified criticism except the idea that the 49ers played too hard which led to injuries.

JG deliberately taking sacks instead of throwing it away as to not decrease his comp %? ??? That’s a justified criticism, Hou?

      1. Wow, you guys are fast. No, I do not think it’s justified to say Jimmy G takes sacks to protect his completion percentage. That’s also plain old-fashioned stupid. I should not have disregarded everything else to point out the stupidity of the “playing too hard” argument. The main point about Jimmy G’s turnovers is legit even if Gran’ts underlying reasoning for the argument is absurd. JG has 10 Int’s and 9 fumbles. That’s just too many turnovers. Jimmy G has only taken 24 sacks. In comparison, Kyler Murray has taken 41 sacks and Russell Wilson has taken 35 sacks. Jimmy G is not taking sacks on purpose. Thats dumb.

    2. « Every argument Grant posted is a justified criticism except the idea that the 49ers played too hard which led to injuries. »

So you agree that Garoppolo would rather take a sack than throw the ball out of bounds and lower his completion percentage?

  16. There are facts, and then there are opinions. The problem arises when one presents their opinion as fact.

  17. Who needs opponents when the Bozos on the bus are involoved in cannibalism.
Get over it people , the 9ers are 10-2.
Geez, try to have a good time.
Grant keep up the good work.

  18. Came here to read about some discussion on the Saints game. But Grant’s “followers”/loyalists here seem to be strewing embers of inanity in the dry grass of Grant’s “analysis”.

This has been a very fruitful season for my career. I’ve gained roughly 3,000 followers since July.

Here, Grant sounds almost like a cult leader! He’s funny without intending to be funny, but I am not drinking his koolaid! I’ll bet Grant doesn’t buy the BS comments he sprinkles in his columns. He’s just honing his skills here to manipulate his faithful followers later on social media, e.g., with conspiracy theories like Jimmy G taking sacks to improve his numbers. I’d urge the saner and knowledgeable crowd here to ignore these baits and initiate some meaningful discussions.

  19. These kinds of comment threads really take me back to some good old forum thread sh1tshows. Everyone hates each other – it’s fantastic. Sad, but fantastic.

    1. Hey Renas,

Some friends and I hold a dinner once a month in which we all bring a guest. You seem like a perfect guest. Any chance you could make it?

      1. I’d love to, alas flights across the Atlantic are especially expensive this time of year. However, if you ever find yourself in the UK, near a town just South of London called Reading, lemme know. First beer is on me.

        1. Is it an American thing? Maybe I’m just being dense, but it doesn’t make sense to me. Offer of a beer is genuine, though.

            1. Huh, you learn something new every day. Might be a generation thing, then.

Well, the beer still stands. I am, after all, a charitable soul.

              1. Nice. FC Barcelona for me. Spent a week there in early May, was there during 1st leg of their UEFA semifinal match with Liverpool. Watched it at a restaurant. Don’t know much about soccer, but the atmosphere in that city all day was electric.

              2. Barca, huh? Better than Real, at least lol. I’ve never had an opportunity to go to Spain to see a game live, always wanted to see a Madrid derby at the Calderon but sadly it’s demolished now. I have managed to see Atleti live, when they came over here to play in preseason, against Brighton. Good game too, finished 3-2 Atleti, Torres scoring the winner. What most impressed me was how, in a stadium full of Brighton fans, the Atleti supports were by far the loudest, despite being relegated to a corner of the stadium (which I managed to get tickets in).

I’m actually not huge on soccer overall, but it’s impossible not to be a fan of some team growing up in the UK. I’d probably say Tennis, then American Football, and the soccer in terms of personal preference. Always enjoy playing soccer though, I try to play once a week with some guys from work.

              3. Nice. Now all you need is for the 49ers to have a London game scheduled and you could show your soccer moves off to Grant and Witherspoon

              4. Lmao, I’d take them up on that if they offered. I’ve actually seen them in London once before, they played the Jaguars. 2013 I believe. Great game, well, for me at least as it was a blowout win. Would love to see them again, friend of mine is a Dolphins fan too so there’s a chance they could play that over here.

              5. If you forced me to watch soccer, I mean football, Hamburg’s FC St. Pauli is a club I could get behind.

St. Pauli enjoys a certain fame for the left-leaning character of its supporters: most of the team’s fans regard themselves as anti-racist, anti-fascist, anti-homophobic and anti-sexist, and this has on occasion brought them into conflict with neo-Nazis and hooligans at away games. The organization has adopted an outspoken stance against racism, fascism, sexism, and homophobia and has embodied this position in its constitution.

                —Wikipedia

      2. Jack, I’ve been thinking about that cheap shot Grant lobbed at you because you had to give up your blog. (I liked your site) That was uncalled for.
I have to commend you for taking it on the chin and saying, maybe I wasn’t that good.
I wish Grant had some humility about his mistakes but instead he proffers: “People pat me on the back every day.”
Jack, it takes a real guy to admit his failures.
        You are that guy!

BTW Barca and Liverpool are bought teams, money makes them good.
Ajax last year was the team to watch, with players from their own pool!

        1. Dee Phiant, the “bought teans” thing is valid, it’s the singke biggest detriment to the sport even, but very, very few teams like Ajax can compete for a substantial amount of tine befire becoming a team that just spends more money. Atleti used to be one, but even that was relative to Real and Barca – compared to the likes of Levante, Villareal etc Atleti are massive spenders (they have been compared to anyone for a few years now, to be honest). It’s just one of those things you have to suck up if you want to enjoy top level football.

If you want something that runs counter to that, England’s second division, the Championship, is a good bet. A couple years ago, I watched loads of games live there because my local team was in there (they still are, just not my local team anymore, though my new local team is also in there). It’s a more physical, tougher division with a lot less disparity between the top teams and the bottom. The further you go down divisions, the closer you get to the grassroots core of the sport.

I’ve long wished for the leagues to adopt an NFL-line system as a spending and salary cap, but it’s just not possible given the upper management.

          1. Renas, I remember the days when clubs were mostly filled with players from the town/country they were representing. Only some of the big clubs had bought a few players for their team. But the small teams had a chance to advance and win it all. Nowadays it’s like a Foreign Legion. I really wish they had a salary cap in soccer, like they have here. It would make it so more interesting.

          1. No, He wasn’t bad! He had some good insights and was learning the ropes just like you were.
You weren’t that good in the beginning either. A lot people here on this blog gave you some serious feedback that you slowly, (I say SLOWLY) listened to.
Care to share what you were alluding to then with “You know why you didn’t make it.”
It definitely feels like a putdown and a personal attack.

              1. Dee, I was more offended by Grant calling me “a fan” for stating that Garoppolo was the best QB on the field Sunday. And even offended is too strong a word.

I’m glad you appreciated the write ups that I used to do. Appreciate the kind words, as I do the help Grant has provided.

              2. Dee, this is classic Grant. He loves to take cheap below the belt shots at people. Look at the shots he took at Jimmy G in this trash article. Think back to the off season shots at Shanny and Bosa. He said they were only considered “good”, because of their last names. The irony… He has no control, maturity, or professionalism when it comes to his work. He simply shoots from the hip like an over-reactionary fan from with a platform. He is a spoiled kid that says whatever he wants because daddy will protect him. Of course it is okay for him to do this, because East bay Chris and his burner account Monty love it.

Edit: I do believe that Grant is talented. His film work is good, although he makes far too many assumptions for my liking. I have observed this blog from afar for many years and I have seen Grant’s incredible growth. His writing is also solid, though he writes like he speaks rather than a natural writer.

              3. Also Grant, you seem to believe that only 8 people on this blog rip you, and everyone else loves you. Go look through this comment section. A lot more people than 8 have ripped you for the irresponsible garbage you wrote. Even on your “booming” twitter platform people killed you for this terrible article. Where there is smoke there is fire my friend. Maybe you should do some self reflection. You seem to find it so easy to critique the 49ers players and coaches with harsh commentary, often with very little basis or evidence. Now you cry because you are too arrogant to take what you shell out.

  20. Hey Grant….

This time of year, scouting departments are working hard to evaluate and rank college prospects for the upcoming draft. Do your sources still contend that 9er scouts are disgruntled? If so, how do you see this schism impacting 9er selections?

      1. Seb this has your name written all over it!
I wonder why you would have FRM apply for you?

        1. Sorry, I am kinda busy right now, so I do not have enough time needed to coach, which requires almost a religious devotion. Many Niner coaches spend long hours trying to devise ways to counter their next opponents.
          .
Brent Jones admitted he did not want to spend the hours required to do the job properly.
          .
However, if the Niners or Fresno want to research the archives, they could find my 10 point plans. In 2013, all I fervently wanted was for the Niners to get a play off in time. Now, they finally look relevant, and a daunting challenge for any team. The Niner defense will tee off on Brees. I hope both Ford and Bosa get a sack. Kamara can be contained, but I remember that the Niners moved up 7 spots next draft, then the Saints chose Kamara with a third round pick from the Niners.
          .
I think KS and JG need to play up to their potential, and JG seizes the day. If they make mistakes, Payton and Brees will make it close, and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
          .
If they want, all the coaches need to do is read what I wrote previously. I wrote about using Wilson up the middle, and seeing him score thrice. I wrote about using Richie James more, and seeing him catch and run for 57 yards. I wanted Dwelley more reps as a receiver, and watched him score twice. I called for them to utilize Marcell Harris, because he was good against the run, and we all saw that strip and fumble recovery, which stopped a drive. i must be a lucky guesser. ;p
          .
If one thing any coach could benefit from my numerous posts, would be the admonition that any team should consider time outs to be precious, and saved for legitimate challenges, and the last 2 minutes of each half. I hope the new HC at Fresno might implement that strategy. Who knows. If wisely used, it might help them win. Wasting them, and they might assure defeat.
          .
Hmmm, defiant. Maybe that is all they need , Dee Phiant. You seem to act like a judge, that has leadership qualities

              1. Francis? Is that a Freudian slip of the tongue? Does the wife approve of that?
                ~
You keep on mentioning ‘the archives’. How does one access those archives? Even clicking on ones Icon does not produce one’s own posts (as is usually the case).
                ~
Does one need the golden key like the one you got from Grant?

              2. Right over your head. Think about it……
                .
As for the archives, just ask Cassie, she is an expert at it.

              3. Anything written on a computer is archived, and can be retrieved.
                .
Cassie brings up things I wrote years ago.

  21. https://www.reddit.com/r/warriors/comments/4rutii/local_idiot_grant_cohn_manages_to_ask_another/

I do not necessarily agree with this, but I thought it was funny. Grant can probably have a good laugh at this, because this was a rare instance that he was proven to be somewhat right regarding Chip Kelly. Sadly he was way off base with the “zone read” as Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson are terrorizing defenses with offenses based around “zone read” and rpo concepts. Even Andy Reid runs them time to time with Pat Mahomes who is killing it as well.

      1. Totally fair and I agree. I think that the Ravens are the team that has “peaked” too early. I just thought it was funny that you were getting ripped when you were actually right and not disrespectful. That Chip Kelly year was your prime. You were right on many fronts that year.

          1. The 2 49ers with him and Tomsula were a living nightmare.

Also, I just wanted to let you know that despite all the flak I have given you, I do have a great appreciation for your work ethic. You work extremely hard, and you will be rewarded for it. I occasionally tune in to your Monday Night football hot mic simply because of how unbearable Booger McFarland is :). For the record, I think that you are a good listen on hot mic. As always I wish you were more measured. The constant characterizing of a player over one play is a little bit over blown in my opinion.

PS: I do think you can do better than Ryan though. In my opinion you are just way more suited for commentary than him. He talks too much about himself.

    1. That question was what many were declaring, so Grant was spot on to get to the heart of the matter. Both KD and SK handled it like professionals. Grant made them laugh, which is a no easy feat.
      .
Chip was thin skinned and showed why he was unfit to be the 49er Head Coach. His refusal to even acknowledge gap integrity showed way more about Chip, than Grant.

  22. Wow this thread went off the rails quickly! Y’all are way to serious. ?

Our team is 10-2, doing fantastic! Are we perfect? no. Are we a good team? heck yeah! Are we a great team? I think so, but we’ll see Over the next 4-7 weeks. Either way, Shanny, Lynch, Saleh, our positions coaches and our players are all working their butts off and trying to make their mark in this league; and here we are with our first winning season since 2013!!!

That’s five years of bad football before 2019, and then 8 years of losing records before Harbaugh.

Let’s just sit back and enjoy the ride people. Love our team! Go Niners! Beat them Saints!
