Dashon Goldson vs. Andy Dalton

FS Dashon Goldson: 6’2”, 200 lbs., 27 years old.
QB Andy Dalton: 6’2”, 220 lbs., 23 years old.

The Niners want to shut down the Bengals running game early, and then force their rookie quarterback to throw the ball downfield. When this happens, Dashon Goldson has to read Dalton’s eyes, dart to the ball, and make a big hit or an interception. The first two weeks of the season opposing offenses have burned the 49ers backup free safeties – Madieu Williams and Reggie Smith. Williams can hit, but he’s too slow to play the ball in the air. And Reggie Smith can’t change direction quickly right now – he’s not fully recovered from his meniscus tear. Even though Goldson is coming off of a knee injury himself, the veteran safety should be able to take advantage of the young Dalton with his experience and speed. If Goldson can intercept just one pass, the Niners will be in a good position to win.

Advantage: 49ers
