San Francisco has a long history of great wide receivers. Players such as R.C. Owens, Gene Washington, Freddie Solomon, Dwight Clark, John Taylor, Terrell Owens, and who needs to be reminded of Jerry Rice.
Deebo Samuel can be the next great 49ers wide receiver.
In 2019, Samuel finished with 57 receptions to set the 49ers rookie receiving record. While 802 receiving yards trail only Jerry Rice, Samuel’s 961 total yards bettered the mark of the San Francisco legend.
After struggling with injuries throughout his sophomore season, Samuel provided the heartbeat for San Francisco’s offense in 2021.
Samuel posted the most receiving yards through seven games in 49ers history. His 819 yards, bettering the previous mark of 781 set by Rice in 1986. He was on pace to finish with 1,872 receiving yards, the most in 49ers history.
Two weeks later, with the San Francisco offense lacking explosion Kyle Shanahan decided to make Samuel a more integral piece in the running game. The move resulted in Samuel seeing his targets drop from 10 per game over the first eight weeks to only five per game over the final eight.
The lack of pass targets did little to slow down Samuel as he finished the regular season with 1,770 total yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns. Those totals trail only Jerry Rice’s 1,884 yards from scrimmage and 16 touchdowns in 1995 as the single season-high for a receiver in 49ers history.
When it comes to Deebo Samuel, his play on the field leaves little to question. Sure, he struggles with drops at times but so did Rice early in his career.
The question around Samuel is his ability to stay healthy. He struggled through injuries in college at the University of South Carolina. Injuries also limited him to only seven games in 2020.
If Samuel can maintain his current level of play and stay healthy, he will become the next great receiver in 49ers history.
I think Deebo has a chance to be really good for 3-4 years. But let’s be honest once this dude hits 30 he’s done.

Deebo is obviously a unique threat in the NFL. The term Wide-Back is a perfect description of what he brings to the table. To me, the greatest value the 49ers could get from Deebo is exploiting matchup issues if they get the right defense on the field and then go no huddle quick offense. You could easily alternate between 22, 11, 10 personnel with a guy like Deebo. Get a short yardage defense on the field and then go no huddle with 3 WRs so the defense can’t sub. Kyle Shanahan hasn’t scratched the surface of what he could do with a guy like Deebo. Only thing that concerns me with Deebo is his injury situation. Eric Crocker with Locked on 49ers has mentioned a few times that there is something technical with the way Deebo runs that will always cause him to suffer soft tissue injuries. Not sure exactly the details on that but Crocker is very knowledgeable in my opinion. There’s a lot of evidence from college and the NFL that there is something to what Crocker is saying.
