George Kittle on 49ers QB situation: “It’s Brock’s job to lose”

The “People’s Tight End” has spoken.

Since the final gun ended the 49ers season in Philadelphia the conversation has been which quarterback will lead the team in 2023, Trey Lance or Brock Purdy.

George Kittle joined Von Miller for The Von Cast on Thursday morning at the Super Bowl. Miller asked the 49ers tight end if Purdy is the future of the 49ers.

“Trey Lance is still there. Trey unfortunately hasn’t gotten a fair shot at being an NFL quarterback yet,” responded Kittle. “He got a full rain game monsoon versus the Bears, and he got hurt in the second game. Trey’s still got plenty of talent, he just needs to get out there and play.”

Kittle then gave his opinion of Purdy.

“You can’t talk about what Brock Purdy has, what he did. He’s fantastic. Our offense was operating at the highest it’s probably been since 2019. There will be a competition because Brock’s going to be until training camp with his surgery. When you find a guy like that who can seamlessly jump in, it’s his job to lose.”

Kittle’s response is accurate on all accounts.

Trey Lance has talent. However, tough conditions in the 2022 season opener and three injuries over two seasons have led to inconsistency.

At the same time, you can’t deny how Purdy performed when his number was called. He earned the respect and belief of his teammates with his play.

In Purdy’s five regular season starts the 49ers averaged 33.6 points. The strong play continued in the playoffs as the rookie led San Francisco to 41 points in a win over Seattle. In an NFC Divisional round win the following week against, Purdy showed the ability to grind through a playoff game against a top opponent. He earned the respect and belief of his teammates with his play.

With Purdy set for surgery on the torn UCL in his throwing arm Lance will have the entire offseason program to prove himself and earn the trust of his teammates.

  1. Lance will get his chance to turn heads this off season, including OTAs, mini camp, camp and 3 preseason games. He also may have to start the first couple of regular season games. If he shines and I mean truly shines the 49ers are going to have a very difficult decision to make. With BP getting the UCL procedure as opposed to the full TJ he may come back with a weaker arm and that is an area where he can’t afford to lose any strength. Best case scenario Lance shines and Purdy comes back at full strength and the 9ers have a blockbuster potential trade on their hands. imho

    1. “Best case” are the key words in your post. How successful will Purdy’s surgery be? We don’t know. How well will Lance recover from his injury and play in the OTAs and beyond? We don’t know. And for me that pretty much sums up the Niners’ prospects this coming year. We don’t know.

  2. Question: Why do we keep beating this dead horse?
    * FACT #1 “You can’t talk about what Brock Purdy has, what he did. He’s fantastic. Our offense was operating at the highest it’s probably been since 2019. ”
    * FACT #2: “Trey Lance has talent. However, tough conditions in the 2022 season opener and three injuries over two seasons have led to inconsistency.”
    * FACT #3: “There will be a competition because Brock’s going to be until training camp with his surgery. When you find a guy like that who can seamlessly jump in, it’s his job to lose.”
    Answer: We keep beating this dead horse because it’s slow and the sports writers need something to write about.
    So lets find some new topics to write about….PLEASE!

    1. agree with geep! We are just guessing about so much. But as for me, I will not be here for SB. I lost interest when our Niners were not able to recover from massive injuries.
      I also hope we can get a qualified veteran for the third team. I like Dalton for example.

  3. * New topics to write about now that we know the 9ers new DC is Steve Wilks
    A) UFA(s) the 9ers need to resign and NOT resign:
    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/san-francisco-49ers/+6

    B) Pre Combine 3rd round draft prospects the 9ers need to evaluate:
    * EDGE: Zach Harrison, Ohio ST. (need to move up to late 2nd Rd).
    * C John Michael, Minnesota (need to move up to late 2nd Rd).
    * C Steve Avila, TCU
    * OT Blake Freeland, BYU
    * S Rashad Terrence, Florida
    * DT Mazi Smith, Michigan

  4. Latest rumor, Chase Young is on the trading block. Should the 9ers make a run at him? If healthy he would make the perfect book end to Bosa. After sitting out most of the last two years they likely wouldn’t have to give up too much maybe a couple of those 3rd round picks.

    1. A healthy Chase Young paired with a healthy Nick Bosa would be the best D-End combo in the NFL. Thats a big gamble in a trade though. Redskins are likely looking for top compensation for Young so I wouldn’t make that trade. Maybe a 3rd and Javon Kinlaw would be my trade offer for Young. 1st round health risk for a 1st round health risk + a 3rd round pick. I know most people will think thats unrealistic but I really wouldn’t go any higher if I were Shanalynch.

      1. I think the 9ers might get him for cheaper than you think. He has barely played in 2 seasons. He is coming off of an ACL, if they did trade for him I would like to see if he would agree to going down to Fla. and training with Bosa. No one knows better how to bounce back from an ACL. I think 2 3rds in this years draft and a 2nd from next years could land him.

    1. Both are richly deserved. Bosa had an amazing year and DeMeco was awesome. 49ers had a great year.

  5. We all love Ryans at least until he starts raiding the 9ers FAs. Houston has approximately 40 mill in cap room. I see them signing Al-Shaair, J. Ward, Moseley, Omenihu and Hyder. On offense Brendel if they need a C. I wonder if they might sign Jimmy G. and use their #1 pick in the draft for a great D player. You have much less of a chance of failing by going D instead of QB. Then pick a QB with the 1st pick of the 2nd round.

  6. Two things…1) The 9ers and Brock Purdy should not get over anxious after the surgery…his elbow needs to be 100% healed..last thing the team needs is for him to re-injure it because of a hasty decision…2) For those of us that won’t be able to see OTA’s or Training Camp, rest assured that the CohnZone will give us up to the minute reports on Lance’s exercise, sleep, exercise, diet and bathroom habits during the proceedings

  7. For those here who called me a homer and accused me of sour grapes when I criticized the officials in the NFL, well I did not have a horse in the race today and I think that D holding call on the Eagles on the last drive was horrible. It handed the Chiefs the game on a platter. It was clearly a no call. I have taken 2 sports officiating classes in college and both instuctors (top college officials) were very clear when you are making a call late in a game make sure their is clear advantage, don’t make a “close call” Something that could be drilled into the heads of full time professional officials. Oh, and no I didn’t have money on Phil my money was on the Chiefs
    P.S. other than that it was a hell of a game.

    1. Yes it was a hell of a game & this year’s Niners couldn’t have beaten either team. And in fact, they didn’t. They lost convincingly.

    2. Coach,
      Always good observations on your part.
      But whether it was a minor hold or not, it did interfere with the WRs momentum.
      My interpretation of the play was, had the defender not made contact with the WR, he would have been beat for a TD, imho.

      1. I have watched the replay numerous times and I agree he may have caught that ball but I just don’t think you throw the flag at that point of the SB on a may have.

        1. Eagles, James Bradbury admitted that he held the WR. Perhaps it’s not the way to end the game, but had a flag not been thrown then the Chiefs would have had case.

          Refs have to follow protecol even if it’s a ticky-tac call. I rather have the refs make these calls according to the book than make calls that favor one team or the fans.
          It’s a bitter pill (especially for eagles fans), but that call has to be made.

  12. Wow this place is dead, other than the bots. Whats going on 9er fans, the off season officially started yesterday. The 9ers signed Marcelino McCrary-Ball today. It pretty much guarantees that they won’t sign Al-Shaair. I hope they will be announcing that they have renegotiated 5 or 6 contracts giving them the cap room to sign at least 2 major FAs. I believe they need to sign two to make up for not having a 1st or 2nd round pick. I think they will sign an OT, DB or a DT.

  13. John Lynch has been a maverick with the draft. I expect him to make his way into the 2nd if there’s a player that he and Shanahan really like that may be within reach.

    Things, usually calm down after football is done.
    Things will pick up during and after the Scouting Combine leading up to the draft.

  14. I understand and agree to a point with those that say that these messages are pointless in that the owner isn’t going to pay attention to what’s written on it. However, If you don’t already go to games then continuing not to go isn’t really much of a protest. Buying these banners and putting up messages are the ways that people that don’t go to games can show their displeasure with the team since their lack of ticket purchasing isn’t going to be a factor.

    It’s about being active in getting the fans voice out there that they are insisting on change, otherwise if you do nothing but complain about the team at the office or on these blogs how can you continue to complain about a lack of change you are doing nothing about. It’s like complaining abut a politician and then not showing up at the polls.
