How will 49ers respond after 1st loss?

SANTA CLARA — It was not business as usual this week at 49ers headquarters.

On the most talkative 49ers team in years, the players didn’t seem eager to discuss their first loss of the season. The locker room was mostly empty Wednesday and Thursday. Players hung out in the mail room or the eating room or the bathroom while reporters stood and looked at their phones.

For the first time this season, the 49ers seemed apprehensive. The previous 10 weeks, the 49ers locker room was a nonstop party.

When they blew out the Carolina Panthers a few weeks ago, the 49ers were an undefeated juggernaut. Now, they’re an injured team coming off a loss, facing the toughest four-game stretch of the season.

How will the 49ers respond to a loss? In terms of being stand-up guys to the media, who aren’t very intimidating, the 49ers didn’t respond well.

The 49ers’ next four opponents, in order, are the Arizona Cardinals, the Green Bay Packers, the Baltimore Ravens and the New Orleans Saints.

The weakest opponent of the four is Sunday’s upcoming opponent, the Cardinals.

The 49ers need to beat the Cardinals.

Las Vegas oddsmakers expect the 49ers will win big — they’re 10-point favorites. But the game should be much tighter than that.

Here are five things to know about the 49ers matchup with the Cardinals.

  1. If they really are a team that is going deep into the playoffs, they will win this game. Good playoff teams rebound from losses like that. They are a young team, they should come out fighting mad…should of kept the veteran presence Matthews.

  2. If you can keep your head when all about you
are losing theirs, and blaming it on you.
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting, too…
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools…
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you
If all men count with you, but none too much.
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run.
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it
And -which is more- you’ll be a Man, my son! -RK.

          1. None of this belongs on a football blog. Ever. This comment section has turned embarrassing Grant. I don’t take you seriously at all anymore. I just come for the laughs.

  3. No deep shots to Goodwin at all this year why ??? Isn’t that what he’s here for ? They need to start loosening up defenses who are stacking the box , good of time as any this week

          1. Totalmente falso— todos sabemos que Jimmy la lanza muy lejos en tu culo, mi enculado…

  4. How will the Niner receivers respond from last game? JL has much faith in them, and think they will bounce back.
    .
I beg to differ. I think they should send a message to Pettis, and deactivate him, until he can prove he can catch the ball. Give Richie James more snaps, and maybe even line up Dwelley as a WR at times. Bourne must stop thinking about running, before catching the ball, because it leads to drops. He should be told to concentrate on catching the ball, securing it, and even falling to the ground, so he does not bat the ball in the air for a pick. Whitner mentioned that, in his interview on KNBR.
    .
I hope they activate both Jeff Wilson, and Julian Taylor.

      Captain Obvious.

    2. As I wade through my fan mail here I thought it would be good of me to eat my own dog food, so to speak, and send my own message to Dante Pettis. I rose early last Wednesday morning and penned my heartfelt angst at Pettis’ lack of civility on the football pitch.
      .
I am waiting to hear back.

  5. I expect the team to be fired up to rebound after the loss to the Seahawks. Sounds like Kittle will be out again, but hopefully Sanders is suited up and able to play most of the game this week.

  6. I have AZ on this one…..they had the Niners number last game…no Kittle and Sanders we know how that will end up……this week it is up to Jimmy on the road with a depleted offense….He has to step up

    1. now they say Sanders is up…this will help Jimmy for sure= long as he can find him when he is wide open for a TD sheeeesh

  7. Pettis is not physically equipped for the NFL. We traded up for this guy .

49ers Mailbag: Why hasn’t Dante Pettis gotten chance to return punts?
Dante Pettis was set to return punts on Monday night, but the 49ers changed their plan and decided to have Richie James active in place of cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who was deemed not ready to return. So it’s possible that Pettis, at some point, will be back there.
But the 49ers have emphasized Pettis’ development as a wide receiver. He sustained a knee injury on a punt return against the L.A. Chargers early in his rookie season that shut him down for several games.
Pettis returned nine punts as a rookie and he fumbled twice. He did not look comfortable catching punts. I’m not sure that his style is a fit for the NFL. Pettis was so good in college because he was a better athlete than almost anyone else on the field. He could dance to avoid tacklers. He returned an NCAA-record nine punts for touchdowns during his career at the University of Washington.
In the NFL, that style generally does not work. The players are too fast, too agile and too strong. Punt returners have to get up the field and get up the field quickly.
Richie James has been very good as a punt returner. He’s been one of the best in the league with a 9.3 average and no fumbles on a league-high 25 returns. There has been no reason for the 49ers to make that change.

    1. thanks man…..I always wonder why and the flock did they move up and give picks away for this guy….he was a Punt Returner in College and a medioce WR……now they want him to NOT return punts and be an excellent WR??? crazy there…..he is def slight of build for a football player to put it mildly

  8. Weather at kickoff should be about perfect. Turf conditions at Levi’s appear improved over seasons past.

This will likely be a blowout win for the 9ers, or a very close, gritty, sloppy victory. I’m thinking the latter–hoping not.

  9. Division game. Always tough. I usually stay away from betting on these games but I’m on a roll with the Niners (Though I didn’t pick the game last week but on here took Seattle +6 and the over) which would have helped fill the coffers . Too bad so sad!
A 10 point spread in a division game would have me taking the points 99% of the time but I just have a feeling about this one!
I’m taking SF -10 and the over (44)

Now for some reason Jimmy doesn’t start, gets hurt early, and Nicky comes to the rescue, I think the results will take my money!

    SF 13 ARI 20

    Let’s hope that doesn’t happen!

    :)

  10. Watch out. Jimmy carves up the defense. Deebo Samuel is about to have a monster game. Mark my words.
