The 49ers just announced Jimmy Garoppolo tore his left ACL. His season is over, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Stay tuned for more information. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak to the media at 4:00.

  1. At least it wasn’t his right leg. Hope it’s not a real bad tear, and he can return as quickly as humanly possible. Who’s doing the surgery, Dr. Andrews?

    1. I’m thinking it’s the doc Grant quoted regarding Foster’s shoulder after the 2017 draft…the doc who offered a dissenting opinion, which fit well with Grant’s injury narrative.

    2. Ian Rapoport…4pm
      (@RapSheet)
#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he’s working out several FA QBs tomorrow, including Tom Savage. Kellen Clemens. TJ Yates. They asked Matt Moore, but unclear if he’s going to take part. Nick Mullens will be promoted from the practice squad.

  2. Next up but without a real OL it doesn’t matter who is back there. We traded down from a bad OL last year by moving Trent Brown out. We have an aging left tackle and a cluster-f at right guard.

But that’s ok, our GM really addressed the defense and our pass rush in the offseason…..

    1. Meanwhile, Eli Harold already has three sacks on the season. One sacking Garoppolo and one beating Trent Brown. Hmmm???

  3. CJ’s team for the rest of the season. Young man this is a once in lifetime opportunity to make your mark in the NFL, go for it and leave nothing on the table. JG I expect you to know the playbook inside and out even better then KS by training camp next year.

  4. As many are saying now, and what’s been said for many, many years in the NFL…next man up. Season ending injuries–however stupid–happen.

Suggest that those commenters who have perfect knowledge of the NFL (coaching, player development, scouting, strength and conditioning, etc.)–please, submit your resumes to Jed. And hurry.

      1. You mean that Trent Borwn who’s rated by Von Miller as one of the best tackles in the NFL?! Who’s this sack monster Harold you speak of?

  5. The silver lining would be that it’s only the ACL and he should be back in time for offseason activities.

Hope he can overcome the mental side of this and comeback strong.

    1. Since it’s not his plant foot, shouldn’t the mental side come easier? That’s my silver lining anyways.

      1. Yeah the right foot is the one you drive off when throwing, but that front foot is just as important because you need to get up onto the left foot for accuracy and follow through. If you don’t the ball will have a tendency to sail, something we’ve already seen is an issue for him.

            1. I’d have to go back and take another look, but on that one I think he was just aiming it too much.

And by that I mean overthinking it, not just letting it rip, being to fine with it.

  6. This sucks and pushes the Jimmy G saga to next year. However, not much was expected from the 49ers this season. CJB should get valuable experience. Don’t dispair. There are positives to be had here.

  7. Yeah, this sucks. But it’s next man up. While this probably kills any chance of the 49ers being a playoff contender, I think the team is capable of winning four to six more games this season.

    1. 4 to 6 games?? Did you forget about 0 and 8?
Do you watch any other teams bro? The Niners with Beathard will be lucky to win a game outside of the Arizona series. Smh you guys kill me. I sincerely hope I’m wrong but for real, the only good thing ppl can say Bout Beathard is that he’s ‘tough’…Ever notice that’s the word they use for QBs who lack talent?

      1. LMAO … dude some of these fan are delirious or in denial dude. The next man up only works when you have depth at those positions but we don’t. I beginning to think that we are cursed or our conditioning staff sucks. Every year is the same $%@#$. Most of these fans are so restarted they thought we were deep at receiver and oline this year just like they thought we were deep at corner and defensive line last year. Unfortunately we are not our players look good in practice because they are playing less talented players thats the sad truth. We don’t have the talent you guys think we have.

        1. You two need to look at the schedule before you post something instead of depriving your brain of oxygen before doing said posting.

  8. Although not a funny situation, there is some humor involved. There are actually a few morons on here that truly believe that I’m to blame for him getting hurt.

You can’t make this stuff up.

    1. No one is blaming you. You just made a God awful premonition about a serious injury is all. It’s what we call a di$k move!

    2. You mean you didn’t CfC? I was hoping that you would predict I’d fall into a bunch of money and get a sweet looking woman too!! My poor shattered dreams ….

  9. Big mistake on his part. Nowhere further to run and should have headed straight for the sideline.. He tore it planting and trying to cut up field.. Competitive guy but costly mistake.

Zero confidence in Beathard. He looked terrible in preseason.. And was 0 for 2017 starting.. Hope he makes a liar out of me but doubt he will. Tell you what I will support them to the nines even when they get their rear ends handed to them if, if, if, the coaches coach sound smart fundamental football and the players play sound fundamental football.

      1. Hah. I went by Kipling’s tomb in Westminster Abbey today. It turns out he wasn’t into Football or Footbol or Suntzue or Cricket or darts or Numblypeg. I was the only one checking it out. Then I walked 20 feet to join a throng chatting at the memorial tile for Dylan Thomas, including several couples from ‘Indja’.

        1. BT – Kipling wrote “If” which is often quoted by Seb. Did you see any graffiti from him on Kipling’s tomb? I do know that Kipling was into good cigars because he wrote: “A woman is only a woman but a good cigar is a smoke”. I love a good Cuban as much as anyone but I’m not sure I’d place them as high on my priority list.

        1. If you’re going to bring a guy in from the outside with the thought of him starting, I think it has to be someone who already has a pretty firm grip of Shanny’s system.

A guy like Savage would be coming in to backup Beathard instead of just promoting Mullens.

          1. Scheme fit? Well yes. Agree totally.

That being said, many ‘experts’ will cry out for QBs who’d be rather poor Shanahan system fits.

            1. Not so much scheme fit as just knowing the offense. It took them what 4-5 weeks before playing G. By that point the season will be gone most likely.

              1. There’s becoming knowledgeable of the scheme, and there’s the physical aspect of running it properly. Could one say that any pro QB could become familiar with the scheme AND run it effectively and consistently?

  10. We have some major issues and problems which have been lingering for years. The Niners administration is tainted at the top. That’s right. Jed is the problem. More to come on this. Much more.

    1. Ha!

I’m on a ship at sea heading to Hawaii and just checking in. Good to know you’ve got my back, Hammer ;)

Rams used the correct model for bringing in a new, young, inexperienced head coach considered to be an offensive whiz kid. They paired him with a very experienced, good DC. I understand that it was difficult to do this for the 49ers because KS was hired so late (I think they tried, but am fuzzy on the details, or is it the umbrella drinks……). Anyway, at the end of last season I posted that they needed to ditch Saleh and the team would be better off if they had. He is not DC material.

If only the team would read my posts (with that statement, I know it’s the umbrella drinks doing the talking :D)

      1. Enjoy your trip. It’s drama central here lead by the usual suspects.
I’m sure when you are back you won’t have missed a thing. Anything important that is.

        1. Aloha, Razor. Yep, the experience that Jimmy will miss getting this year is the worst part of the injury.

  11. Looks like Sherm will miss a few weeks too with a calf strain. A pity – he was playing pretty well. The secondary was already a hot mess with him playing.

  12. And of course, Montana’s back…from mid September 1986…

“(NYT) — Joe Montana, who led the San Francisco 49ers to two Super Bowl victories, underwent back surgery yesterday to correct a ruptured disk that threatens his career.

Doctors said they removed the extended part of the disk but did not have to fuse the disk, which would have been necessary for a more-serious injury. The operation, performed at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco, took almost two hours.

Montana will be sidelined for the rest of the season. Last night, Montana’s agent, Larry Muno, said he came through surgery ”better than expected.”

”The damage wasn’t as extensive” as first believed, Muno said. ”According to the doctors, Joe could conceivably be ready to play in three months, but they also said in all probability his best interests would be served by not playing this year. At any rate, his prognosis is that he could play next year.”

The 30-year-old quarterback injured a disk in the region above the tailbone in the 49ers’ season-opening 31-7 victory over Tampa Bay.

”I tried to throw something to my left on play action,” Montana said from home over the weekend. ”I felt it go then, but it didn’t hurt during the game.”

Montana’s injury is similar to one that afflicts millions of other Americans, although most are able to avoid an operation with rest, drugs, traction, massage and braces, and many are able to return to active physical exercise. But for a football player, the prognosis is less clear.

Each disk is like a cushion between the individual vertebrae in the spine, absorbing shocks transmitted to the bony column that protects the delicate nerves running the length of the back.

Repeated or severe shocks can damage those disks, and fluid that helps absorb jolts and jars can bulge out. The bulge presses on nerves, causing pain and in some cases permanent damage.

The operation is performed by making a four- to five-inch incision in the spine above the injury and removing the offending material with a spoon-like instrument. The speed and completeness of recovery depends on the amount of material removed.

Doctors say Montana also suffers from congenital spinal stenosis -curvature of the spine.

Dwight Clark, Montana’s friend and teammate, said the quarterback told him before the 49ers left for Anaheim, Calif., for a game against the Rams Sunday that he was going to have surgery.

”He was very nervous, but he was confident,” Clark said. ”He said the doctors told him that it was pressing against his nerve and something had to be done. I was devastated. I thought at first he had to be kidding.”

The injury is different from the slipped disk that last season forced Montana to miss one game and troubled him much of the year. That injury was higher in the back.

The new injury pressed on Montana’s sciatic nerve and sent a tingling sensation down his leg.

”I had some tingling in my leg during training camp, but now I have tingling in my foot,” Montana said last week.

Some athletes have returned from back surgery. Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle, the former Rangers, both enjoyed excellent seasons after surgery. Phil Jackson came back to play a key role for the great Knick teams of the early 1970’s. However, Lee Roy Selmon, the Buccaneers’ defensive end, had his career ended by a back injury.

The 49ers have turned the quarterback job over to Jeff Kemp.

Kemp started against the Rams Sunday, who beat the 49ers, 16-13, on a field goal with two seconds left. After throwing two early interceptions, he settled down and completed 19 of 24 passes for 252 yards and one touchdown for the game.”

Sometimes I choke on my verbal diarrhea.
    .
Not a pretty sight I tell you.
    .
Life is hard when you’re over 60 and have the mental capacity of a pigeon.

Reply: I agree with you wholeheartedly Seb…Henceforth may we refer to you as:
    Cabesa de Pollito?

    1. TrollD, that was just a catfish account.
      .
Believe what you will. The mentally weak are easily fooled.

    1. And Seb, (aka: Cabesa de pollito) please spare us your Kaepernick/Joe Montana comparisons which no ‘TRUE’ Niner fans would ever do. After your 1st comparison I knew you were a Raider Traitor, but to continuously disparage Joe in this manner resoundingly demontrated your football austro pithecus ignoramuses

  14. I would not even sign a back up. Full fledge tank the season. Play all your rookies till they drop dead and get that 1st pick in the draft

  15. Haha. See you guys know the seasons over with Beathard if by week 4 your pullin out the ol Montana tapes. Hell the team should watch the tapes and understand the precision, the discipline. It’s incredibly frustrating to root for a team, that it’s own players don’t even really understand the history of.

Then you have Grant on here last week saying Reid is on Bill Walsh’s level. That’s one of the most absurd things I’ve ever heard from a ‘sportswriter’ now that I think about it. Reid’s in the same family tree and probably gets the scripted plays from them, and that’s it. What Im getting to is people don’t realize just how good the 49ers were, and what their brand meant.

  16. One thing about that big contract that shanahan and lynch never discussed is that jimmy came with injury concerns. When Brady was suspended four games, jimmy couldn’t stay on the field and jacoby got his shot.

  17. Lynch should start looking for a fill ins for the defence and forget about a quarterback until it’s it’s time for the next man up. With the offence line we will probably go thru 4 or 5 quarterback s this season

  18. This was going to be a very tough year even with a healthy Jimmy. I’m sorry he’s hurt, but I see this as an opportunity for a better draft position. Now I can watch the games just to appreciate the play of the guys I like and not have the losses ruin my Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Some of you will throw a shoe at me for saying this, but that’s how I feel about it.

  19. Maybe jimmy will mature from this. Evidence he needs to grow up a bit:
    1. Injury sunday was avoidable
    2. Pornstar debacle could’ve been private if he just kept it out of the public eye
    3. He could’ve handled the Brady-kraft-Belichick thing differently by denying everything outright
    4. His injury against the dolphins might have been avoidable too. Check YouTube tape.

  20. I think we all know what to expect from CJ with the games we have seen: Weak arm, holds on the ball to long, and is a Check Down Charlie. 3rd and 9? How about I hit a running back 6 yards behind the sticks?.. He is a tough though, got to give him that. He’ll stand in the pocket and take the hits, and is not afraid of taking contact for a couple extra yards.

The whole back up QB making an impact thing is a pipe dream, they are back ups for a reason. There are exceptions to the rule though: Case Keenum & Nick Foles. RG3 is a headcase, Bridgewater is a game manager (would be ok if we had a good D)… No need to spend a draft pick for someone on someone else’s roster, and I don’t see Lynch going that route. Kaep is not going to happen for a myriad of reasons. Tom Savage…I mean who cares? No one currently sitting on a couch is going to make a difference…

I had high hopes for this season coming in, and although I wasn’t impressed the first 3 games, I figured midseason they could gel, the young guys adjust, and we put together a good run. Now, I will watch the games root for my team, and return to the “next season and draft dreams”.

  21. If not already shared…

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/49ers-set-to-bring-in-several-quarterbacks-for-workouts-not-colin-kaepernick/ar-AAABfn0

“C.J. Beathard takes over the starting quarterback, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will promote Nick Mullens from the practice squad this week. However, the team is also going to work out several veterans on Tuesday. Shanahan said the team will bring in Tom Savage, Kellen Clemens, and T.J. Yates, and they had reached out to Matt Moore but had not heard back. Fooch’s update: Add in Landry Jones

Shanahan was asked if the team would consider bringing in Colin Kaepernick, and the coach said no they had not. He said they had looked at the situation last year and decided it was not a style fit. For the current situation, he said he wants to bring in players who would require less of a change in the offense.”

  22. No one wants Kaep!

Nike can keep him. All he has to do is read scripted lines and walk around looking “deep”. Even Kaepernick can’t screw that up.

Thank you, Kyle, for putting an end to the “speculation”. LOL

  23. Sigh, KS just admitted he is not capable of taking a QB, and being able to coach him up to play a game. Maybe he does not want to win with Kaep. He would rather lose without him.
    .
    Tom Savage 72.5
    Kellen Clemens 68.9
    TJ Yates 70.7
    Matt Moore 80.2
    Landry Jones 86.2
    Kaep 90.7

    1. A statistic……………??? A stat?????????????? And you want us to bring back ol wind up for that silly thing????
While you conveniently choose to forget how Kup played his last 3 yrs in the NFL???????????

For cryin out loud Seb………go fire up the chain saw, suck on the bong, do something!!!!!!! But don’t tire us out with sewage like that. Your getting right up there with Arnold………another man of letters……..

      1. Kaep is better than half the present starters and almost all the backups.
        .
Kaep is the victim of collusion and blackballing.
        .
Once he wins his lawsuit, it will void the CBA so the players will be able to negotiate better terms. That will make Kaep a hero to the players, and he will be allowed to play again.
        .
It might even spell the end to Goodell. Maybe the next NFL Commissioner will be a Hall of Famer.

        1. Kaep is better than half the present starters and almost all the backups.

And not a fit for the scheme Shanahan runs. Sorry Seb, but that is the truth.

          1. Seb is also cherry picking. Kap has an 88.9 QBR rather than the highest year 90.7. By that measure they should bring in RGIII. He had a 102.4!

Heck, even Gabbert had an 86.2 one year in SF!

          2. That is KS’s opinion.
            .
Too bad KS just admitted he is not competent enough to coach so he can accentuate a QB’s strengths.

            1. Sebnynah, Coach Shanahan said he would have to revamp his entire offensive scheme for Kaepernick. Again if you played football you would know that changing an entire philosophy for one player contradicts what football is all about. Never mind the fact the guy hasn’t played in over a full year. He had trouble with wording and learning a complex play book from Greg Roman and has been documented, Coach Shanahans playbook is twice as complicated. It seems you have an deep infatuation for this player but please use common sense here

    2. You forget how long ago that Kaep played Sebber!
Also he regressed more and more, why dont you
      open your eyes Seb.
Kaep is more of a attention whore than a professional football player.

      1. Kaep is totally healthy, and only 30 years old. He regressed when the whole team regressed. Kaep did not allow third string RBs to gallop for 200 yards. Kaep could not throw the ball, and catch it too. Kaep did help make the Niners 6th in rushing that year.
        .
Kaep is the victim of collusion and is being actively blackballed.
        .
Open your eyes. Kaep is still relevant, and once he wins his lawsuit, he will be allowed to play.

        1. Kaepernicks legacy will be the first ever 49ers QB to lose in a Superbowl and a guy who lost a career in football because he decided to challenge billionaires with his social justice and lost!

But wait, a storm is coming!

    3. rumor had it … last week or so …
Chuckie was thinkin’ about Kaep … but then..
I saw it on only one page … and haven’t seen
it since …. so … I’m thinkin’ .. it was a bogus report

    4. Yeah becuase they all have large enough samples sizes
Lets try Total QBR for that season

      Colin Kaepernick- 49.2
      Blaine Gabbert – 54.1
      Bryan Hoyer – 55.1
      Trevor Siemian – 49.7
      Brock Osweiler – 49.3
      Shaun Hill – 57.8

He’s not exactly head and shoulders above the available options using that stat. He was so good he won the same amount of games as Blaine Gabbert (which cost the Myles Garret in favor of Solomon Thomas)

      1. Kaep- 90.7 Career QBR.
        .
None of those other QBs have 4-2 road playoff records or have set playoff rushing records.
        .
Mahomes shows how important it is for a QB to be surrounded by talent. Baalke dismantled a SB team and Kaep was surrounded with drek.

        1. Kaep- 90.7 Career QBR.
Not true that was his 2016 rating (see espn stats)

          His total QBR went from
          2012 – 71.8
          2013 – 65.7
          2014 – 60.9
          2015 – 43.4
          2016 – 49.5

          Those numbers are bottom tier.

  24. What kind of style in a QB do I like?
    .
I like mobile QBs, who can avoid pass rushers and shrug off arm tackles.
    .
I like QBs who can put their foot on the half yard line, then sprint up field untouched 99.5 yards for a TD.
    .
I like QBs with a cannon for an arm, but also can put touch on the ball.
    .
I like QBs who set playoff rushing records.
    .
I like QBs who can come back after being down 17 points in a championship game.
    .
I like QBs who have a 4-2 road playoff record, and can make it to a SB after only 10 games.
    .
Maybe KS does not like QBs who have that kind of style, but I do.
    .
The Niners will not even give Kaep a tryout? Sounds like more proof of the collusion and blackballing.

      1. Our Man of La Mancha returns!!

Having learned nothing during his self imposed exile!!

        Lol! What a clown!

          1. “Life is tough, but it’s tougher when you’re stupid.”
            -John Wayne

I fear old Sebster leads a very tough life. Fighting windmills, pushing stones uphill and forever reliving the same day. I see shadows in your forecast Sebbie!

  25. Seb must have paid KC defense to injure Jimmy G so he could tout the hairball CK.
Sherman now out for up to 4 weeks w/calf injury.. Seb, any washed up CB’s you could recommend?

Getting real tired of all the injuries 49ers, and SF Giants, continue to suffer. Hard to follow either team when you know they don’t have a chance. Can we hire Strength Training Coach from some NFL team which have fewest injuries?
