Justin Smith responds to Kevin Gilbride’s statement that Smith gets away with murder

SANTA CLARA – Here’s what Justin Smith said Friday afternoon at his locker about Kevin Gilbride’s recent comments.

Q: You saw Kevin Gilbride’s comments, right?

JUSTIN SMITH: Heard about them, didn’t read them.

Q: What’s your reaction?

JUSTIN SMITH: No reaction.

Q: He said you get away with murder.

JUSTIN SMITH: Hey, better than getting caught with it. I really don’t know what he’s talking about to be honest with you. If he’s trying to get some bulletin-board stuff, good for him. Do whatever they need to do.

Q: Your coach’s take is that the Giants are trying to influence the officiating crew. Does that matter to you?

JUSTIN SMITH: There’s nothing to call! I don’t know what he’s talking about to be honest with you. Whatever they need to do. I read somewhere that they said they’re not getting any respect. They’re the defending Super Bowl champs, so whatever. They’ll be ready, we’ll be ready and it will be a good game.

Q: You seem amused by it.

JUSTIN SMITH: Yeah, I really don’t know what he’s talking about. It doesn’t bother me. I’m going to have to look it up.

Q: Have you ever heard a coach or a player criticize you for holding before?

JUSTIN SMITH: They hold me! That’s the first I’ve heard of it. Interesting. That’s the first time I’ve heard an offensive coordinator complain about it.

Q: When you say, “they hold me,” are you referring to offensive linemen in general?

JUSTIN SMITH: They just hold. They were born that way.

Q: You obviously don’t think this is a big deal. Why do you think it was a big deal for you coach to respond?

JUSTIN SMITH: It’s just the type of guy he is. He’s always going to do that. He’s a good player’s coach. He’s got your back on whatever the topic is.

Q: It seems like you found the Giants’ nobody-picking-us-to-win stuff humorous.

JUSTIN SMITH: To me it’s the next game on the schedule. It’s an important one. I’m more concerned about what we have to do inside our division and getting back to where we need to be instead of this stuff.
