Linehan declines 49ers offer

Scott Linehan has declined the 49ers offer to become the team’s offensive coordiantor.

Linehan was one of four candidates who have already interviewed for the job to become the 49ers’ seventh offensive coordinator in seven years. Coach Mike Singletary fired Mike Martz as O.C. on Dec. 30.

One of the other candidates for the job, Rick Dennison, is no longer available, as he has accepted a job to remain on the Broncos’ staff under new coach Josh McDaniels.

The other candidates who have interviewed for the job are former Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and Colts receivers coach Clyde Christensen. It is not known in which direction Singletary and the 49ers plan to take the search.

UPDATE: I spoke with Linehan via telephone. He tells me the decision was very difficult for him, and he’s not sure that he won’t be regretting it a week from now.
