Live blog: 49ers @ Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Here’s the live blog for the 49ers Week 4 game against the New York Jets. I’ll update this frequently with analysis from the press box.

8:34 The 49ers inactives are Scott Tolzien, A.J. Jenkins, Isaac Sopoaga, Brandon Jacobs, LaMichael James, Trenton Robinson and Joe Looney.

The 49ers do not have a single 2012 draft pick suited for this game. Darcel McBath seems to have passed rookie Trenton Robinson on the safety depth chart.

Sopoaga is not playing because he injured his knee and ankle last week, so Ricky Jean Francois will start at nose tackle. Ian Williams is suited up for a change, and he’ll back up Jean Francois.

Ted Ginn Jr. is active for the first time this season. I assume he’ll play and return kicks and punts.

Undrafted rookie Garrett Celek is suited up for the first time this season as well. Perhaps Greg Roman has some three-tight end sets in the game plan.

WR Stephen Hill and TE Dustin Keller are inactive for the Jets.

9:03 According to the NFL Network, this season the Jets defense has given up a 38.2 passer rating with Darrelle Revis in the lineup and a 107.4 passer rating without Revis.

9:49 A commentator on Jets radio just predicted the 49ers will win 23-22. In addition, he said it will be a close game in the fourth quarter, “but can the Jets pull it out?”

9:57 A Jets commentator just called the 49ers, “Arguably the class of the NFC.”

10:01 Already I’ve gotten a prediction wrong. The Niners won the toss and chose to receive the  ball. I expected them to defer.

10:03 Kyle Williams returns the opening kickoff to Niners 20. Maybe Ted Ginn won’t play today.

10:06 After a defensive pass interference penalty on the Jets, the Niners go three and out. On third and four, Anthony Davis gave up pressure, Alex Smith threw the ball to Crabtree who couldn’t hold on to the ball. Jets ball at their 25.

10:13 Mark Sanchez converts a third and 15 but cannot convert and third and 2 – Aldon Smith sacked him as Sanchez tried to step up in the pocket. The Jets punt and the Niners take over at their own 8.

10:21 The Niners’ drive ends when Alex Smith overthrows Mario Manningham down the left sideline on third and 7. Colin Kaepernick played 2 snaps on the drive. On his first play, he ran the option for an 18 yard gain. On his second play, he threw deep to Randy Moss in the end zone, but he was double covered and the pass was broken up. The Jets have absolutely no pass rush. They don’t tackle well, either.

10:25 The Jets go three and out. On third and four Mark Sanchez threw to Santonio Holmes’ outside shoulder, but he was open on the inside shoulder. Terrible throw.

10:27 The Niners start their third drive at their own 32 because Anthony Dixon was flagged for an illegal block in the back on Ted Ginn Jr.’s punt return.

10:32 The Niners’ running game is dominating their fourth drive. Mario Manningham just slipped three tackles on a 30-yard gain off of a reverse. Kendall Hunter followed that with an 11-yard gain. First and 10 and the Jets’ 11.

SECOND QUARTER

10:38 Colin Kaepernick takes a snap from the shotgun and runs 7 yards untouched around the left end for a touchdown. 7-0 Niners. They completed one pass for five yards on the drive. Greg Roman has managed to stick to the run without over-working Gore.

10:48 Shonn Greene converts the Jets’ first third and 1 on this drive. Tim Tebow is the quarterback on their second third and 1. He faked a handoff, then faked a run up the middle, then he threw to Dedrick Epps. Epps caught the ball, then took a huge hit from Dashon Goldson to the knee and fumbled. Niners ball at the Jets’ 47.

10:56 David Akers misses a 57-yard field goal wide right. Alex Smith took back-to-back sacks to push the 49ers way back. On the first sack, Smith chose not to throw to Garrett Celek who was wide open in the middle of the field.

11:02 The Jets go three and out when Mark Sanchez gets sacked by Ahmad Brooks on third and 1. The Jets look terrible.

11:08 Andy Lee boots a bad punt from his own end zone. The Jets get the ball at the Niners 47. On third and eight, Alex Smith overthrew Crabtree deep, and Anthony Davis was flagged for a personal foul. Bad play.

11:11 The 49ers force the Jets to go three and out, but Aldon Smith throws a player to the ground after the third down play and is flagged for a 15 yard penalty. First and 10 for the Jets at the Niners 28. The Niners are letting the Jets get back in the game with these dead-ball penalties.

11:16 On third and 7 Mark Sanchez shuffles frantically in the pocket and Justin Smith forces him to fumble. Sanchez is atrocious. Niners ball at their own 26.

11:22 Alex Smith leads the Niners 56 yards in a minute to set up a 36-yard David Akers field goal. 10-0 Niners. Smith was four-for-four on the drive. Three of the four passes resulted in first downs. The Jets defense was playing a soft prevent, receivers were wide open and Alex Smith hit them.

The Niners had the ball at the Jets’ 21 yard line with 30 seconds left. Harbaugh decided to let the clock run out and go for the field goal. Very conservative. He must not have much respect for the Jets’ offense or he doesn’t have faith in his own offense.

HALFTIME

The Niners attempted 17 runs and 16 passes in the first half, and they outgained the Jets 210 yards to 83.

THIRD QUARTER

11:40 Sanchez makes two nice first-down passes in a row, but then he gets a screen pass tipped by Ray McDonald and Patrick Willis picks it off at the SF 41. Sanchez bungles a simple play.

11:40 On third and three from the Jets’ 22, Alex Smith fires a 1-yard pass off Delanie Walker’s helmet. Incomplete. The Niners are 1-for-6 on third down.

11:44 David Akers misses a 40-yarder. That’s his second miss of the game. The Jets have been awful, but they’re still in the game.

11:47 Sanchez throws a pass right to Bowman but he drops it. Then he sails a pass over Holmes’ head on third and long. Jets’ fans boo Sanchez. He has to be the worst quarterback in the NFL. The Jets should bench him and bring in Tim Tebow.

11:54 Kendall Hunter easily gains 8 yards on third and 4. Three plays later – third and 13 – Alex Smith slightly overthrows Mario Manningham deep. Manningham was open and he only could get one hand on the pass. Andy Lee punts and pins the Jets at their 2 yard line.

11:58 The Jets go three-and-out again, and the fans boo Sanchez again. He’s 7-for-17 passing. It escapes me why he’s still in the game. The Jets punt a short one. Niners ball at the Jets’ 48.

12:05 The Niners drive it all the way down to the Jets 2 yard line. On third and goal, Gore is stuffed on a run up the middle. The offense goes for it on fourth down, Alex Boone pulls and clears a path from Gore to score. 17-0 Niners with 2:49 left in the third quarter. That was probably the knockout punch.

FOURTH QUARTER

12:16 On second and 12, Sanchez completes a pass to Holmes in the flat. He slips to the ground and laterals the ball to Carlos Rogers, who runs it all the way to the end zone for a 49ers touchdown. That was generous of Holmes. 24-0 Niners.

12:17 Holmes is carried off the field. He can’t put weight on his left leg. It appears he hurt his left knee. The Jets lost their best player – Darrelle Revis – last week, and they just lost their second best player. Now, the Jets may be the worst team in the NFL.

12:20 This has been a shameful performance by the Jets. Good grief.

12:24 The Jets go three-and-out again and punt.

12:32 The Niners just took a timeout. They’ve driven roughly 50 yards on seven run plays. Eight different Niners have attempted runs.

12:36 After the seven successful runs, Greg Roman calls back-to-back passes to Crabtree and Cromartie knocks both away. Akers kicks a field goal. 27-0 Niners.

12:41 The Jets offense reaches a new low. Another three-and-out. Three errant Sanchez passes.

12:42 Now the Jets’ special teams allows a blocked punt. Larry Grant blocked it. Niners ball at the Jets’ 4.

12:45 Hunter punches it in from a yard out. 34-0, and there are 6 minutes left.

12:46 It seems like only Niners fans remain. Lots of red jerseys, lots of let’s-go-Niners chants. The Jets fans are leaving.

12:51 This time the Jets go three-and-out against the Niners backup defenders.

12:53 Going down to the field. Back at you later.
