Looking for speed, 49ers add Marcus Johnson

The 49ers went into the offseason with a need to find a wide receiver with speed. They may have found their man.

According to his representatives, San Francisco has agreed to terms with wide receiver Marcus Johnson. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

After recording 61 receptions for 793 yards and one touchdown over three seasons at the University of Texas, Philadelphia signed Johnson as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He would make his NFL debut with the Eagles the following season.

On March 7, 2018, Philadelphia traded Johnson to the Seattle Seahawks. His time in Seattle was short-lived, as the Seahawks traded him to Indianapolis during training camp.

During his three seasons with Indianapolis, Johnson played in 24 games and made nine starts between 2019 and 2020.

Johnson signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent in March 2021. After having a solid camp, Johnson injured his hamstring before the beginning of the season and missed the first four weeks. He came back to play nine games, starting three.

Johnson has recorded 51 receptions throughout his career, 41 of which resulted in either a first down or a touchdown.

Standing 6’1″ and armed with 4.38 speed in the 40, the wideout will join a 49ers receiving corps currently consisting of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Ray-Ray McCloud, KeeSean Johnson, Austin Mack, and Conor Wedington.

The 27-year old also has experience returning kickoffs and may compete with Ray-Ray McCloud for the role. He returned 11 kickoffs in his career, including nine for 179 yards last year with Tennessee.

  1. Camp body? He seems worth a look but on par for the bland and generally insignificant signings we need to improve the team.

    1. Agreed, especially in comparison to the Rams and their off-season signings the
      last two years.

  2. * If he’s still a 9er player after the preseason, his contribution will be on ST.
    * I see the 9ers drafting 3 players for speed:
    1) S Nick Cross Maryland, with draft pick #61: 6′ 1″ X 212, 40 = 4.34s
    2) WR Aleck Pierce Cincinnati, with draft pick #134: 6′ 3″ X 211, 40 = 4.33s
    3) RB Pierre Strong NDSU, with draft pick #172 : 5’11” X 202, 40 = 4.37s

  3. Wow just realized Sherfield went to MIA. Not a surprise but I was wondering why they didn’t bring him back. Seems like Johnson could fill that role.

  4. If we’re not going to pay Deebo, would you trade him for a great edge like Myles Garrett or would you prefer draft picks. Getting another great edge should elevate the defense to terrific.
One of the reasons I can’t see Deebo being traded: We’ve already lost the potential of a healthy Mostert. Without Deebo and Mostert, who’s going to be great? A double-teamed beat-up Kittle?
