Minicamp notes: Kaepernick’s big day

SANTA CLARA – Yesterday Alex Smith was the star. Today it was Colin Kaepernick.

The Niners backup quarterback threw three touchdowns and only a few incompletions all practice. His best pass was a 20-yard line drive to Kyle Williams in the end zone. Williams was tightly covered by Donte Whitner. Kaepernick threw the ball so hard Whitner didn’t have a chance to bat it away.

Earlier in a red zone 7-on-7 drill, Kaepernick threw a nice TD pass with touch to A.J. Jenkins in the back of the end zone. Kaepernick scrambled to his left and threw accurately against his body. Jenkins caught the pass over his head with his fingertips, and he just managed to get both feet inbounds.

Towards the end of practice, Kaepernick took a shot downfield to undrafted rookie Bryan Tyms, who was being double covered. The pass was perfect. Tyms outjumped both defenders and made the catch of the day. A few minutes later, Kaepernick threw a short touchdown pass to Vernon Davis. Kaepernick made it look easy.

Kaepernick looked like the best quarterback on the field today. He was accurate from the pocket and on the run. He took shots all over the field and gave his receivers opportunities to make difficult catches.

The other three quarterbacks played well, too. In fact, the whole team played well today. Harbaugh even gave them an “A++” after practice. So I’ll drop the not-so-good section from today’s notes and focus on the positives.

THE GOOD

  • Carlos Rogers picked off Alex Smith in a 7-on-7 red zone drill. Smith was throwing to Nate Palmer and Carlos Rogers seemed to read Smith’s eyes, breaking early on the pass.
  • Kendall Hunter caught a short pass from Josh Johnson and ran about 30 yards for a touchdown. Hunter’s improving his hands.
  • Konrad Reuland caught four passes today, and one was a touchdown at the end of practice. Reuland has played with the first string a bit this week because Delanie Walker hasn’t practiced, and Reuland has caught passes every day. He has very good hands and he rarely drops a pass.
  • Bryan Tyms caught five passes and made the catch of the day. He looked like the best rookie wide receiver on the field today.
