SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for Day 2 of the NFL Draft. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press room.

3:59 The 49ers have the fourth pick in Round 2. I would take Virgnia free safety Juan Thornhill, but there are other good players the 49ers can take, such as Washington cornerback Byron Murphy, Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown and Florida offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor.

4:01 I predicted the Cardinals would trade Josh Rosen to the Miami Dolphins, and it seems they will. The Dolphins should offer their third-round pick this year and a conditional pick in 2020 based on Rosen’s playing time in 2019.

4:14 The Cardinals take Murphy with the 33rd pick. Best corner in the draft. The Cardinals could be good soon.

4:18 The Colts take Temple cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. He will play a lot of Cover 2 in Indianapolis.

4:19 The Jaguars traded their second and fourth round pick to the Raiders for their second, fifth and seventh-round picks. The Jaguards on the clock. Will they take a cornerback or a receiver?

4:22 Neither. The Jaguars take Florida offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor. They probably would have taken Taylor in Round 1 had Josh Allen not been available. The Jaguars came away with two top-10 picks. They’re crushing the draft.

4:23 The 49ers are on the clock. As I wrote above, I would take Virginia free safety Juan Thornhill.

4:26 The 49ers take South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel. Stay tuned for my analysis.

4:34 The Seahawks trade the 37th pick to the Panthers, who take Ole Miss offensive tackle Greg Little. I projected Little to the 49ers with the 36th pick in my first mock draft of the offseason, and you guys said he wasn’t worth the pick. What do you say now?

4:41 The Raiders traded down again, this time with the Bills, who take Oklahoma guard Cody Ford with thee 38th pick. Another first-round talent off the board after Samuel.

4:47 The Buccaneers take Central Michigan cornerback Sean Bunting with the 39th pick. This means LSU cornerback Greedy Williams is tumbling down draft boards. Teams must know something bad about him.

4:48 The Raiders take Clemson cornerback Trayvon Mullen with the 40th pick. Four cornerbacks have been drafted in the past eight picks.

4:55 The Broncos take Kansas State offensive tackle Dalton Risner with the 41st pick. I hear he was a late risner.

4:58 The Broncos trade up for the 42nd pick and take Missouri quarterback Drew Lock, my favorite quarterback in the draft, and the Broncos’ favorite quarterback, too. And they get him in Round 2. Good pick.

5:02 The Lions take Hawaii inside linebacker Jahlani Tavai with the 43rd pick.

5:06 The Packers take Mississippi State center Elgton Jenkins with the 44th pick. Still no Thornhill.

5:09 The Patriots trade up for the 45th pick and take Vanderbilt cornerback Joejuan Williams. Great pick, and one my draft gems. I love him and N’Keal Harry — the Patriots’ first two picks. I feel so vindicated.

5:17 The Browns take LSU cornerback Greedy Williams with the 46th pick. The Patriots got the better Williams.

5:23 The Seahawks take Utah free safety Marquise Blair with the 47th pick. The Seahawks scout free safeties better than just about everyone. Free safety is by far the hardest position to scout.

5:24 The Saints take Texas A&M center Erik McCoy with the 48th pick. He replaces starting center Max Unger.

5:29 The Colts take TCU outside linebacker Ben Banogu with the 49th pick. Banogu is one of the most athletic edge rushers in the draft, and Colts GM Chris Ballard is one of the best drafters in the league.

5:34 The Vikings take Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. with the 50th pick. They took a center in the first round. They’re trying to help quarterback Kirk Cousins, an expensive disappointment last season.

5:38 The Titans take Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown with the 51st pick. Brown and Harry are my favorite flankers in the draft.

5:41 The Bengals take Washington tight end Drew Sample with the 52nd pick.

5:46 The Eagles take Penn State running back Mile Sanders with the 53rd pick. Fills a need. The Eagles didn’t have a quality running back last season after Jay Ajayi got hurt.

5:47 The Texans take cornerback Lonnie Johnson with the 54th pick. Seven cornerbacks have been drafted in the first 22 picks of the second round.

5:50 The Texans take Northern Illinois offensive tackle Max Scharping with the 55th pick. The Texans have drafted two offensive tackles already (they took Tytus Howard in Round 1).

6:00 The Chiefs trade up for the 56th pick and take Georgia wide receiver Mecole Hardman. That’s their replacement for Tyreek Hill.

6:01 The Eagles take Stanford wide receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside with the 57th pick. Who would have thought he would get taken before D.K. Metcalf?

6:09 The Cowboys take UCF defensive tackle Trysten Hill with the 58th pick.

6:10 The Colts take Ohio State wide receiver Parris Campbell with the 59th pick. Similar player to T.Y. Hilton, whom the Colts have already.

6:12 The Chargers take Delaware free safety Nasir Adderley with the 60th pick. Good player, but Thornhill is better, and he’s still available for the 49ers, who have the 67th pick.

6:20 The Rams take Washington strong safety Taylor Rapp with the 61st pick.

6:21 The Dolphins trade the 62nd pick to the Arizona Cardinals for quarterback Josh Rosen. Hey, I called that!

6:24 The Cardinals take UMASS wide receiver Andy Isabella instead of D.K. Metcalf. Smart choice.

6:26 The Chiefs take Juan Thornhill with the 63rd pick. Thornhill is the 11th defensive back taken in the second round. The 49ers whiffed on a run of quality DBs.

6:32 The Seahawks take Metcalf with the 64th pick. Risky pick. Metcalf is extremely injury prone.

6:34 Round 3.

6:35 The Cardinals take Boston College defensive end Zach Allen with the 65th pick.

6:39 The Steelers take wide receiver Diontae Johnson with the 66th pick.

6:41 The 49ers take Baylor wide receiver Jalen Hurd with the 67th pick. Stay tuned for my analysis.

6:43 The Jets take Florida outside linebacker Jachai Polite with the 68th pick.

  1. Murphy/McCoy/Greedy is how I see the next three coming off the board. I think Shanny then takes Deebo.

  2. I can see that play out with Niners selecting Deebo. Would it make more sense to move down 10 spots and pick up a third? I would think but we shall see.

    1. Murphy was my #1 corner for this defense due to his prowess playing zone with instinctual awareness.

    1. Same but not sure Shanny does. I think it comes down to preferences, personal interaction.

  3. I like Rock Ya-Sin. It’s beginning to look more and more that the Niners will have receivers available for them.

If Niners stay, the pick should be AJ Brown. If Niners trade down, they could look Deebo, but I wouldn’t go too far down if they want Samuel.

  4. Hmmmm wonder if Jax thought we were taking the tackle.
    I think we’re getting Greedy

    1. AJ Brown was ranked 23, Deebo Samuel was ranked 78th. Go figure.
      .
Guess Deebo impressed the coaches during the Senior Bowl practices.

  5. Well, we didn’t have to wait long for our first head scratcher candidate. Kyle’s next CJ or JW pick.

  6. Been saying for a long time Deebo is a guy Shanny would love. No surprises so far this draft.

      1. From a lack of surprise perspective maybe, but I like both players they have taken. Good picks.

    1. No, the Niners only wanted trades that could not be true. In other words, unfair trades. Seahawks managed to trade back again. Guess they like fair trades.

      1. That’s as good an explanation as any. This draft has so much to offer between the middle of the 2nd round and the end of the 4th. All positions of need. And yet…..

  7. The 49ers are quickly forging a clear identity – PHYSICAL & RELENTLESS!

      1. Good stuff NBITRD. Of course prepare for Grants training camp report on how he’s afraid to go over the middle.

    1. Nice highlights of Deebo. At 5’11 215lb, 4.48-40, 39″ vert, fast 3 cone and shuttle with some Nasty in him, he’s a tough WR/running back type of player and could play slot too. Wonder why A.J. Brown dropped to 51. Too bad SF didn’t trade down for an extra pick and grab him here, who knew. Metcalf drops to 67?…no.

  8. First time in a long time …..i can’t think of a need for the team to trade back into the 2nd rd…..

    All starting positions are set……

… we are loaded with talent……..now we need the Ws

    1. There is another possible explanation: Offense and defense are taking turns. We have a genius at HC/OC with really only serious gaps in the OL and an apprentice DC with a secondary that could not compete in the SEC. Taking an offensive player, other than a first class interior lineman, before Round 4 is not a smart move. Hate to repeat myself by this move smacks of CJ and Joe Williams. If I’m wrong I will, of course, own up to it. But if I’m called stupid I’ll reserve my penance for later.

      1. I’d love to know how the Deebo Samuel pick, a player who leaves everything he has on the football field, each and every game, is even remotely similar to the Joe Williams pick 2 years ago? I cannot think of a single similarity between those 2 players. Not one!

      2. Please do not throw around the term-‘Genius’, so cavalierly. Walsh and Belichick are geniuses.
        .
KS imploded during the SB, and with basic competence, self admittedly could have won 3 more games last season.
        .
KS is football smart, and very clever, but no genius. He still thinks he does not need an OC.
        .
I agree, they needed O line help, but I do not think they are alternating picks. I hope Reggie Cobb recommended the Deebo pick.

  9. Samuel’s build and ball running skills remind me of Ricky Watters. Remember that Watters was a WR in college too (as well as a RB).

      1. I’m imagining a player that can be split out wide to play Flanker. Move to the F/Slot. Or run/run routes out of the backfield too. Lots of potential versatility and advantageous match ups.

The fear of course is “Jack of All Trades. Master of None”.

        1. I think Shanny puts a premium on route running and that type of versatility you described.

          1. And separation of course. Samuel is an outstanding route runner, who is strong enough to blow right through arm tackles, yet fast enough to outrun a good number of defensive backs.

Deebo has huge hands for his size (10″), he’s built like a tank, and he has above average speed for an athlete with his compact, physical measurements. He is physical with a capitol P, which is why he was given the nick name “Deebo”, the tough guy protagonist from the movie series “Friday”.

He’s almost a perfect carbon copy of the Panthers 2018 1st round pick, DJ Moore. The only question mark with Deebo is the hamstrings, but he seems to have gotten past those issues. I’m not necessarily saying he was the best overall WR on the board, but this is another perfect fit, and his versatility and fearlessness going across the middle of the field, will open up yet more offensive options for the brilliant offensive mind of Kyle Shanahan!

The first 2 picks for the 49ers really couldn’t have made more sense considering talent and need. It’s exactly the way I would have imagined the 49ers brass would have scripted it.

The Raiders on the other hand, continue to baffle me. Mayock and Gruden are doing their best Dave Gettleman impersonation. OK, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration.

I am predicting the 49ers will address either FS or the OL with their next pick, depending on how their board plays out.

  10. I would rather they had selected Juan Thornhill, who was ranked 45. Deebo, at 78, may have lasted until pick 67, the Niner third round pick.

    1. Eh, it depends on what the 49er Intelligence has on the other teams. It’s not a huge reach.

      1. What gives me hope with Deebo is Shanny’s wide receiver assessment skill over Bilichek’s. Bilicheck chose Harry over Samuel, because I think those were the two he was most interested in….

    2. Samuel is a savvy and physical WR who can also make some noise in the red zone, which is something that the offense has desperately needed.

        1. Meh, you have to remember, value is directly related to scheme fit in a lot of ways. A player may be much more valuable in one system and less so in another, and that’s an important thing to consider when ranking players. It’s one of the reasons there are so many variations between individual team boards, especially after the first round.

          1. For instance, look at Carlos Hyde. His value plummeted when the 49ers transitioned to Kyle’s outside zone blocking scheme. On the other hand, Tevin Coleman holds much more value for Kyle, than he likely would for Jon Gruden, and if he were coming out of college, you can bet he would be rated much higher on the 49ers’ draft board, than he would on the Raiders’.

    3. Where do you get your rankings? Deebo is ranked much higher than 78 by CBS Sports (48), and I’ve seen him as high as #40.

But you shouldn’t get caught up with random rankings, every NFL team has their own scouts and their own set of rankings on their draft board. Stuff you find on the internet is not some kind of golden rule, especially once you get past the first round. I’d much rather have Samuel than A.J. Brown, because for me, Brown is limited to the slot at the NFL level. Good slot receiver, but the 49ers don’t need a slot receiver, they needed a split-end.

      1. Yeah rankings, lol….WR Metcalf was projected low to mid teens and goes last pick of the 2nd rd to our buddy up north. Thought for a second he’d be sitting there at 67. Not sure if KS would of wanted him. No Butler???

      2. I use rankings because they are just parameters. Sure, it is an inexact science, but most draft boards do have rankings. I am also not privy to other team’s big boards, so I do rely on the various internet ones.
        .
Yes, I could use CBS,Walter or PFF, but find Draftek seems to be the most aligned to my assessments. I certainly do not use the draft pundits top 100.
        .
Yes, in every draft there are the reaches, but I cannot predict what every team does. I use the information presented, and make my best guesses. I certainly think I could have done better than Gettleman.

  11. Ok what happened to Greedy?
    Something turned these teams off.
He was top 15 in the beginning of all of this

  12. What do I say? I say Little should not have been taken that high, and Newton needs to preorder a bed for his coming season of pain.

  13. Ooohhh just heard someone say Greedy can’t tackle.
That was a problem with our team. Glad he was skipped over

  14. Risner is an excellent pick for the Broncos, and has Fangio’s fingerprints all over him.

  15. Well, I will be at the Sharks game during the 3rd round. Hopefully the wireless internet is working well at SAP Center tonight. GO SHARKS!

  16. So are the Niners going to go CB or safety or O line or something else with their next pick?
Or is it going to be a kicker? :)

  17. Now that’s got Elway’s fingerprints all over him. This is his 3rd quarterback, but at least he learned not to draft one over 6’6″ tall.

    1. That’s funny! (not to draft a ginormous QB.

DrunkenMiller and JaMarcus come to mind: mounted cannons hunting deer.

  18. Deebo is the toughest WR in the draft. The only boards that matter are the teams boards, too which nobody has any idea but them. It’s not as simple as he’s #78 on Walters board or whatever. Look, Captain Buzzkill had Josh Allen as #2 on his board! Ferrell was nowhere near #4. I would have picked Juan also and picked the WR next. I can’t wait to read the Walking Bummer’s analysis and grade on deebo. Of course, this is the same guy that says you build a football defense from the back to the front? Maybe football where the ball is round. Unbelievable.

      1. Just like you should have given a C+ to Solomon Thomas last year. People who live in glass houses….should dress in the basement. Deebo may be a lot of things but he is neither the BPA or needed.

        1. From my glass house, I don’t run a twitter smear campaign trying to devalue Bosa’s stock by calling him a racist either, all the while taking a sucker punch at Maiocco’s article on Bosa by bragging about how patronizing he felt that he didn’t stoop to Matt’s level by writing some “fluff piece”….

    1. Don’t assume they drafted him as a WR. I think he will be our TE2. They said they wanted one and he is 6’5 228 4.47 40. He would rarely if ever have to block in that role, similar to when the Pats had Gronk and Hernandez (6′ 1, 245) lbs

  19. Rams should not have traded with the Pats. They should not help the Pats possibly win another ring, in any way.
    .
Bill Belichick strikes again. He schooled Sean McVay, now he schooled Les Snead.
    .
They selected JoeJuan Williams, a sleeper pick Grant Touted.
    .
Another of Grant’s Gems, Tytus Howard, went at 23 for the Texans.

  20. You think so Razor? Hmmmm. I’m thinking Mr. Negative is going with a solid D+ to C-. I think Deebo’s a solid B- with huge potential and going to the best offensive mind in the game. How lucky he is. Couple that with the A+ Bosa gets, the draft so far is looking great. Overall B+- to A-.
Didn’t coach conclude that Patrick Mahomes would never be successful in the NFL coming out of a run and shoot offense? Meanwhile, Juan here stated multiple times he was THE best QB in the draft by, and I said it then, “a country mile”. Please correct me if I’m wrong Coach/Infinitely better GM! Lol

    1. Let me out do Mr. Negative before he gives his grade: Drafting any offensive player other than an interior lineman who can be expected to start next year is dumb, dumb, dumb. Kyle just drafted a smaller version of Dante Pettis. Hurt often, and maybe possibly, kind of, might, pan out. Our OC is a genius and our DC is an apprentice with a secondary that would have difficulty competing in the SEC. Good luck with that. Grade D for dumb. But there’s always that better lucky than good thing.

  21. Tight end George Kittle and receivers Trent Taylor and Dante Pettis all took to Twitter to express their excitement over the newest addition to the 49ers’ passing attack.

  22. Boom!
    biggest weaknesses……pass rush and WR
    enter Ford and Bosa…..
    enter Deeboe and J.Hurd!!!!

    I love it!

    1. What about CB? They must be fine with Jimmy Ward and Tartt at S. I just think we had other needs to fill instead of another WR. Who will they cut because we have too many WR now? Don’t like the Hurd pick.

  23. I can’t believe that the team is this totally satisfied with the personnel we have in the secondary and interior o-line. Both of our FS are coming off injuries and our C played hurt all year because we had no one else. Wow.

  24. Jalen Hurd had an insane 3-Cone Drill time of 6.60 and a 20 yard shuttle of 3.87 at Baylor. No wonder Kyle liked him

  25. Yeah dont like that pick at all. So many other needs. Only 4 receivers active on game day. They must not think Matthews sticks around and Taylor is probably gone. I was liking there draft to that point. We’ll see.

      1. He was a good RB at Baylor, then a successful WR – he’s versatile and can learn to block. Their new swiss army knife…

  26. I really like this move! It’s a struggle to win without top quality wrs. Until we have ONE, keep drafting them. One of these 2 better pan out while Garapolo is getting paid enough to deliver. Get him weapons so we can see if he’s really the guy or not. This isn’t a rebuild year. Win games or roll heads.

  27. Could be a big help in the red zone.
Tall, can lineup anywhere, run the ball, catch the ball, and go up and get the ball.
Offense needs playmakers, hope the two receivers help out.

  28. Don’t be surprised if we just drafted our TE2 in Hurd. Big, fast and gifted. Would be a matchup nightmare for safties in middle of the field.

    1. Would be a matchup nightmare for safties in middle of the field.

At least safeties not named Kam Chancellor…

  29. Hey Grant,

You’re “crushing the draft” too, like Jags; by giving continuous coverage and putting your opinions out there and owning them. I don’t agree with all of them, but the reporting and analysis are giving us locals a lot of quality entertainment.

Is free safety “one of hardest positions to analyze” due to dependency on scheme and other DBs doing their jobs right? I’d like to see more Niners younger DBs on the field and don’t want to even think about a game one with Witherspoon and Ward as ones on the depth chart.

Also, if we don’t get any DBs I’m going to eff fling scream. Two WRs and no DB!!!
