Now with 49ers, Pierre Garcon and Richard Sherman meet on field again

SANTA CLARA — Pierre Garcon and Richard Sherman didn’t say a word to each other. They lined up face to face at the line of scrimmage, staring eye to eye, carrying four-year-old grudges.

On Oct. 7, 2014, when Garcon was with the Washington Redskins and Sherman was with the Seattle Seahawks, the grudge was born. Sherman held Garcon to just 23 receiving yards. Garcon threw Sherman to the ground twice — once by the face mask and once by the hair.

After the game, Sherman said, “Pierre did a few things. When you can’t get open, you gotta do whatever you can.” Then, Sherman said, “Pierre doesn’t matter in this league.”

Hard to forget that one.

  1. Good write up. The competitive nature of this years team should be heightened over last years team.

  2. For a straight line run only, a guy who runs a 4.3 – 40 yard dash will be almost 42 yards downfield when a guy who runs a 4.5 – 40 yard dash is 40 yards downfield. Jimmy has to take that almost 6 feet into account. If he gets too used to throwing to Goodwin, it seems to me that his long ball will be, in most cases, too long for other receivers.

    1. Any legit NFL receiver who gets a free release on a deep route should be able to maintain that advantage vs DB. This wasn’t a foot race, Goodwin won at the outset while Sherman had to redirect and then chase. Goodwin said in an interview that he’s been focusing on his release against press, and he won that match-up.
If it’s just a foot race, Goodwin wins 10/10 vs Sherman, and a lot of other DBs, and a number of world class sprinters.

      1. Absolutely. My comment was meant to support Jimmy’s response to a question that the deep ball connection is one of the most difficult to develop.

Grant has stated multiple times that the coaching staff sets up “matches” to make one or the other look good. They certainly didn’t do that for Sherman – not that Goodwin beating Sherman one on one really means much of anything except to give the press an opportunity to report on something. Here’s Florio’s take:

“Still, that clip will be viewed many, many times. And many will assume it means Sherman’s gas tank is getting close to empty. Premature as that conclusion may be, in an age where lying is becoming more commonplace and casual, the film never does.”

        1. Yeah, I wasn’t arguing against, just riffing on it. Too much hand wringing on a few isolated plays and way too much extrapolation IMO. I try to take most reports from all over with a grain of salt and form a composite view. Florio I take with a tablespoon of salt, which violates my MDs recommendations.

          1. “Florio I take with a tablespoon of salt, which violates my MDs recommendations.”

            Muffled laugh.

    * It’s good to finally get some 9er football news! Keep up the good work. 1) If JG and Garcon are having a problem connecting agains the Cowgirls on August 9th, it will be a concern. If
they are still not connecting on September 9th against the Vikings, it will be a problem!
    2) Sherman has never been fast, nothing new. More playing time for Mabin or Williams until Sherman is good to go.
    3) Garcon and Sherman are both professionals. They don’t have to like each other, just play football.
