Overreaction Monday: Kyle Shanahan should be on the hot seat

Every Monday during the NFL season is filled with fans and media pundits’ overreactions. Someone must be blamed. Especially when your team is bullied at the line of scrimmage and keeps make the same mistakes.

Here are some of the best overreactions I’ve encountered in the aftermath of the 49ers’ 28-14 loss to Atlanta on Sunday.

Kyle Shanahan should be on the hot seat!

This is an overreaction, but not as much as you may think.

Play calling has not been the issue despite the 49ers offense being held to 17 points or less four times in the first six weeks.

The issue offensively in each loss has been an inability to execute.

Sunday’s loss in Atlanta saw a fumble from Jeff Wilson Jr. get scooped up and returned for an Atlanta touchdown. There were two well placed deep throws from Jimmy Garoppolo which resulted in drops. The one deep throw which wasn’t dropped saw a holding penalty on Jake Brendel wipe away a 37-yard completion midway through the fourth quarter.

Constantly chalking up lack of success to poor execution is letting Shanahan off the hook.

As the head coach, it is Kyle Shanahan’s responsibility to get his team ready and put players in the best situations to succeed.

The two key drops weren’t from a top player such as Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, or George Kittle.

They came from Ray-Ray McCloud and Charlie Woerner.

It begs the questions, why are the 49ers taking deep shots to Ray-Ray McCloud while rookie wide receiver Danny Gray is on the sideline in street clothes? Why are you giving these opportunities to Charlie Woerner when you have Ross Dwelley, who has much better hands, active?

Of course, this is second guessing, but it should be expected when your offense is continually falling short.

With regards to Shanahan being on the hot seat, I would be shocked to see anything happen this year. The team made a big move for the future by selecting Trey Lance. It’s likely they want to give Shanahan at least one healthy season with him before pulling the plug.

The Falcons beat down the 49ers defense! They were the better team!

This is not an overreaction.

San Francisco’s defense came into the game knowing what the Falcons offense wanted to do and had no answers.

The Falcons offensive line pushed the San Francisco front seven around throughout. Atlanta running backs Caleb Huntley and Tyler Allgeier were rarely touched before reaching the line of scrimmage. Even after contact they continuously fell forward for extra yards.

For San Francisco, the Falcons final drive of the first half and their first drive of the second half were back breakers.

After falling behind by 14, San Francisco rallied to tie the game.

On the ensuing possession the 49ers had all the momentum and Atlanta facing third and 13. San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans sent a blitz. Mariota was able to escape and scramble up the middle for a gain of 15. It was downhill from there.

After Mariota connected with Drake London for a gain of 20, Huntley beat the 49ers defense around the edge for 16. With the ball now at the 49ers three, Mariota beat rookie Samuel Womack to the sideline on a zone read to retake the lead.

It was more of the same on the Falcons first possession of the second half. After Mariota opened the drive with a ten-yard completion, Atlanta moved ball 48 yards on seven consecutive plays. Mariota finished it off with a seven-yard touchdown throw to Kyle Pitts.

The 49ers will have four losses in a row before they win again!

Overreaction.

San Francisco will be home underdogs against Kansas City on Sunday. The 49ers have not been a home dog since last November when they faced the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football. That probably won’t happen a second time, but the Chiefs did lose to Indianapolis earlier this season.

The following week the 49ers head down to Los Angeles to face the Rams.

San Francisco dominated the first matchup between the two teams, and the Rams just lost left tackle Joseph Noteboom to a torn Achilles. Advantage San Francisco.

If Jim Harbaugh had this roster the 49ers would dominate every Sunday!

Not an overreaction.

During Harbaugh’s tenure the 49ers offense had an identity. They were going to be physical, and they were going to run the ball.

Sounds like what we saw from Atlanta yesterday.

In fact, it was a game against the Falcons which best demonstrates this point.

During the 2013 NFC Championship game in Atlanta, the 49ers quickly fell behind. Matt Ryan hit Julio Jones for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to give the Falcons a 17-point lead.

Instead of shelving the run, Harbaugh leaned into it.

Over the final three quarters the 49ers ran the ball more than they passed, a pair of Frank Gore touchdown runs being the only scores from either team in the second half.

Compare that to what we saw from Kyle Shanahan on Sunday.

The 49ers fell behind 14-0 early in the first quarter. From that point on they ran the ball only 12 times. It would be one thing if this was an isolated occurrence but getting away from the run is something we’ve seen several times with Shanahan in his career.

Kyle Shanahan lacked urgency in the fourth quarter!

Overreaction.

This stems from the 49ers taking over eight minutes off the clock only to come away with no points. However, it’s off the mark.

San Francisco took over at its own one with 10:42 left to play.

The 49ers should have had the ball in Atlanta territory with 7:20 left to play after Jimmy Garoppolo hit Brandon Aiyuk deep for a gain of 37. However, Jake Brendel was called for a holding penalty, his second of three during the possession.

Instead of having the ball on the Falcons 40, the 49ers now faced first and 20 from their own 13.

The 49ers offense officially gained 100 yards on the drive, not including the 42 yards lost due to the penalties on Brendel.

  1. I have been saying for years that the 49ers need to hire a someone in the front office, a VP in charge of special projects. The first two jobs I would assign them would be a study of the training and coaching staff as to why the team is at the top of injured players the past 6 seasons. Someone who would take a look at other teams with good records of keeping their players healthy. Then compare what those teams do to what the 49ers do. Their second project would be to investigate how the 49ers make draft choices in the first 3 rounds as opposed to their process in choosing players in rounds 4 thru 7 and UDFA’s. Lastly this position would be heavily involved in selecting the next HC or GM if they decide to move on from KS or JL. The Yorks don’t have a great record in that area. If V. Fangio is ready to move on from coaching he would be a great candidate. imho

    1. Demeco laid an egg as did Kyle. Our team was simply soft and unready to play a game they should have won. We have blown 3 games that will haunt us. This looks to be another mediocre Kylye team. For all the over-hyping this spring and summer, we are where we were a few years ago. Jimmy G is Mr. mediocre and Trey is not a starter. Now or ever. We way overpaid for him. Sad to see this mess. Let us see Purdy soon. We lose to a superior, better coached, smarter team this weekend and lA, though they don’t look good, is up for revenge. Let Kyle go or trade him. Let us see some intensity again.

    2. I’ve been saying the same things (less articulately) since JS/JL got here. If the object of the game we’re getting guys on IR, they’d have more of those awards than Lombardi trophies!

    3. Do you have any data or facts that the Niners have more injuries than the average team? The injuries seem excessive but do we really know they are worse than most teams? Probably don’t need a VP to figure that out.

    4. Old Coach
      * I like your idea…..But as long as KS is in control, IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
      * Also, IMO, the late round success in drafting players is due to great 9er scouts working with position coaches.
      Not with KS or JL.
      * FOR PROOF: Consider the fact KS and JL decide who to draft in the first 1st thru 3rd round. Then consider all
of the draft busts they’ve drafted, while the late round draft pick turn into solid draft picks!

  2. It sucks
We have tried different trainers, bringing in a hockey staff right?
    Every team has injuries…
I know we let it slip away yesterday them big backs just kept gaining yards after contact…the lack of Kinlaw really hurt yesterday and no Armstead..
We went into Dallas last year and won in Green Bay…let’s get healthy before we move on from Shanny…
Are you forgetting what it was like around here?We are getting draft pics from developing head coaches and we have a identity
    We got woooed yesterday yes
I’m disappointed but one thing about this team is they are tough, resilient and prideful…I enjoy every Sunday knowing we have a chance to win…it hasn’t always been that way

    1. I agree! It amazes me how fast fans get comfortable and think we can do better, when it wasn’t too long ago when we had the Tomsula era. Like you said, I love having the chance to COMPETE for a Super Bowl. I love having a team that CAN WIN, I LOVE the fact that players want to be a NINER, and I love the fact that we are DRAFTING young talent than breaking the bank to buy a Super Bowl. As you said, WE HAVE AN IDENTITY! A lot of people think we must win every game or win every the SB every year! In today’s league with the Salary Cap making it hard to build Dynasty’s, EVERY team is stacked! All we can ask for is to be in a position to COMPETE! That’s all I can ask for our team and we have that. We have the coach and the GM to keep us in position to COMPETE! Even the GREAT BILL WALSH didn’t win every year and had some rough seasons and we had a DYNASTY! This is the NFL and it is VERY hard to win a game, alone a Super Bowl Championship! Anyway brother, you get it and you are a TRUE fan of the 49ers. I guarantee some of the negative posts are done by new fans who bandwaggoned and are pissed because they can’t brag every week! ;) #Ninerfaithful

      1. I don’t think that’s it Raul. I know a lot of long time 49er fans, and I mean true Faithful, and the feeling I get from most of them is the same thing I am feeling: Kyle’s blowing this Super Bowl window.

The 49ers haven’t been great with their 1st round picks, and it sure seems like nearly every player we believe was targeted by Kyle Shanahan specifically, have been underachievers at best, and flat out busts at worse. But on the flip side, they have done a phenomenal job drafting players in the middle rounds and later. This football team, as currenttly constructed, is loaded with elite players on both sides of the ball.

But …. the NFL is a QUARTERBACK driven league, and at the very least you need to be able to score points by passing the football. All of the rule changes over the last 15-20 years, favor the passing game, and most of the teams that win the Super Bowl nowadays, are teams who can win games with their passing attack. And I mean downfield passing, not screen passes to a “wide-back”. But Kyle just simply can/t seem to figure part out. The 4th QTR of Sunday’s loss to Atlanta is only latest example of why Kyle and Jimmy are one of the worst 4th QTR HC/QB tandems in the entire league. The only time Kyle Shanahan’s offense reaches the top 10, is when they have a deep and dynamic rushing attack. Yah, that’s great to have, but IT’S NOT what wins Super Bowls these days, and that’s the problem. And now we know that Mike McDaniel has been the mastermind behind Kyle’s run game all along, so what does Kyle have left? What is the appeal of Kyle Shanahan now that he lost his best asset? He certainly doesn’t know how to prepare his players physically, because they lead the league with injuries every year!

Kyle Shanahan is BLOWING IT! Do I hate the fact that Kyle is an offensive HC, but it’s his defense that has carried his team during his HC tenure? No. I love defense. But again, a great defense can keep you competitive, but you need to be able to pass the football efficiently, DOWN THE FIELD, and Kyle’s offensive concepts don’t accomplish the most important thing in today’s NFL. The NFL has become a game of speed, and striking quick. It’s what all the Super bowl champions do now. The Rams couldn’t win a SB with Goff, because of his passing limitations, but as soon as they acquired Stafford, they won the Super Bowl. The year before that it was Tom Brady. The year before that it was Patrick Mahomes. Kyle Shanahan’s offense is stuck in 2nd gear. Now they have a young, dynamic QB who Kyle simply doesn’t have the patience for. Kyle has had 6 years to figure out the most important position in the NFL, and he has FAILED! At some point, scratching and clawing to make it into the playoffs as the #7 seed, isn’t good enough. Everything came together for Kyle in 2019, and he still found a way to lose the Super Bowl, because huis offense got outscored, even though he had the superior defense. It’s the same every season. If your defense is going to lead the way every season, why wouldn’t you go out and pair that up with an offensive minded Head Coach who understands the quarterback position, and the passing game? Kyle isn’t that guy. It’s proven. He believes that running trhe football is the key to winning, and anyone who follows football closely knows that the NFL is now a quarterback driven, passing league. Kyle’s always going to be an “also ran”, unless he makes major changes, and everyone who knows Kyle knows he’s too stubborn to make major changes.

        1. Kyle Shanahan is on the hot seat now. He has to be. It may not be this coming offseason, but if DeMeco Ryans leaves after this year, and Kyle’s 3rd Defensive Coordinator coaches circles around Kyle yet again, then Jed needs to find a new, offensive minded HC who can bring some actual 2020 style passing concepts to the 49ers offense, and knows how to run a hurry-up offense, and can actually hold onto 4th QTR leads. Oh, and maybe Jed should find a HC who understands the importance of playing your most talented players. Tevin Coleman isn’t the best RB on this roster.

          1. Last season Kyle played a washed up Mohamed Sanu over Jauan Jennings for half the dang season, even though everyone in the building knew that Jennings was the superior receiver!

Kyle needs to stop coaching like a scared little boy, unless that’s actually who he is. Because when you coach scared, and you show your players that you don’t trust them, you lose. It’s been proven over and over again. It’s why Kyle is the worst 4th QTR coach in the entire league. Fortune favors the brave, and confidence means a heck of a lot in professional sports.

And BTW, do you guys think Kyle’s offense can keep up with the Chiefs this week? How about it, guys?

Type Y for Yes, if you think Kyle’s one-dimensional offense with Tevin Coleman and Jeff Wilson leading the way, can keep up with Andy Reid’s dynamic, high octane offensive attack …

            or type N, for No.

            1. Kyle Shanahan is 0-26 when his team is down by only 4 or more points the 4th QTR! That is unquestionably the worst 4th QTR record in the NFL, maybe of all time?

              COACHING SCARED!

              1. And Kyle’s 49ers are averaging 18 points a game in 2022. They were better than that with Brian Hoyer at QB in 2017.

Averaging 18 points a game offensively, and not having the ability to come back from down at least 4 points in the 4th QTR, is a BAD combination guys!

And then to not have a 4th QTR, hurry-up offense installed by week 6? That’s absolutely, positively PATHETIC! Kyle’s 4th QTR performance VS the Falcons was one of the worst, if not the worst 4th QTR coaching job I have ever witnessed, in 40 years of following the NFL!

    2. Why do the Niners always end up with so many injuries? More than any other team. The former first-rounder with an endlessly bad knee and lots of lethargy should be released at the end of this season.

    3. Trade Kyle and get something for him. Bad personality and is a turn-off for the fans. Yesterday his team was NOT ready to play, was lazy and unmotivated. No sense of urgency for a very mediocre team. No hurry to score and no enthusiasm.

      1. allie,
“Trade Kyle and get something for him. Bad personality and is a turn-off for the fans.”

Which fans are you referring to?
Would you have preferred to keep Tomsula or Kelly?
Or maybe you weren’t here during the dumpster fire years.

Shanahan took a non-relevant and a once eye-sore of a team to the Superbowl in his third season. And he’s produced competitive teams since then. I don’t care about your perception of his personality as long as he can keep the 49ers relevant and in the playoffs.

          1. Are you on the S. Payton bandwagon?
The same guy who was complicit in allowing his Dcord Gregg Williams try to intentionally injure our players?
Who else do you recommend as headcoach?

    4. Keough
“Are you forgetting what it was like around here?
NOPE! Does Jim Harbaugh ring a bell? Since you brought it up, I’ll add George Seifert and Bill Walsh.
Does KS and JL have a better W – L record than Harbaugh, Seifert or Walsh?
      K. Shanahan regular season W -L record; 42–45 = (.483). Post season W – L record: 4–2 = (.667)
      49er career W – L record: 46–47 = (.495)
NOTE: I would also point out, that KS Post season record was due to his DC being one of the best in the NFL DeMeco Ryans and Robert Saleh.

  3. WOW so much negativity on here. SMH Since a lot of you so called professional analysts know it all, why don’t you go apply with the organization? Either as a coach, consultant or VP? For those who don’t understand what Shanahan did on Sunday was, he gave our starters a rest! A time to heal! He started our B Team, which this game gives them experience and he knew the game was going to have a 50/50 chance to win as he knew this game isn’t important since WE PLAY AGAINST OUR DIVISION, not the league, meaning, as long as we win the division, we automatically make it to the play-offs. #1 and #2 Seed are important, but we proved we can win on the road if necessary. It’s not ideal, but we have to do what we have to do to give our starters some rest. With yesterday’s loss, we are STILL in 1st place of our division and I don’t see the Rams, Cards or Seattle beating us this year. SO, the rest was VERY important since, we have a VERY tough game next week with the Chiefs. Saying all that, instead of trying to be a couch GM or Coach, trust the guys who KNOW FOOTBALL PROFESSIONALLY! I GUARANTEE they know a hell-of-a-lot more about our players, and what they need, our reoccuring injury problems, and what is at stake for our team!

  4. Losing to lower talented teams is frustrating, but not to extent of wanting Shanahan fired. That line of thinking certainly qualifies as “overreacting.”

The 49ers are 3-3 still atop of the division with the potential to get much better when our injured players come back.
To the “overreaters” I say, SBs aren’t won or lost in October,

    1. AES, thanks for reminding us that Super Bowls are not lost in October. We would be remiss if we forgot that Kyle Shanahan’s Super Bowl losses are reserved for his February coaching-meltdowns, and his 4th QTR winter-collapses!

BTW, I expect the Niners to be 3W-5L at the bye. They were 3W-5L last season as well, but Kyle no longer has Mike McDaniel to cover up for Kyle’s boneheaded game-planning, which also means ….. NO, there will be no Deebo Samuel to the rescue in the second half of this season! If the Niners defense can get healthy, the defense might be able to carry them to the playoffs, but without an offense (Mike McDaniel), a Super Bowl is unattainable for Kyle and Jimmy.

    2. AES
” I say, SBs aren’t won or lost in October.”
While I agree, a 3W – 3L record in October is NOT going to determine if the 9ers get to a SB, a 3W – 5L record (Chiefs and Rams), is a deep hole to crawl out of.
I also believe you’ll agree with me, when I say KS got OUT COACHED by the Falcons HC Arthur Smith, who beat KS at his own game…..RUNNING THE BALL.
It’s also on the HC to have the players ready to play…..With all the mistakes the 9ers made, I don’t believe the 9ers were….This appears to be a recurring problem.

      1. GEEP,
Let’s play those two teams first before creating a 3-5 record. We should be getting some of our core players back from injury which should be a big boost. The 49ers also have a good home field record against opponents, so I’m not automatically giving KC a win. And whether we play at home or in LA, we own the Rams.
I’m looking at more of a 5-3 record going into the bye.

  5. Kyle Shanahan is finally being exposed for who he is …. just a guy with a famous last name, who has made a career out of taking credit for a nerdy genius named Mike McDaniel, who spent 7 days a week burning the midnight oil in order to keep the guy with the famous last name ahead of the competition!

Now that McDaniel is no longer the wizard behind Kyle’s curtain, Kyle’s offense looks like a remedial high school level scheme. The creativity is gone. All of the creative offensive pre-snap motion that everyone around the league used to marvel at is down by at least 15% without McDaniel. Team’s have figured out how to cover Deebo coming out of the backfield, and while Deebo is still Deebo, it’s not enough to carry an offense, or save Kyle’s a_s like he did in the second half of last season.

Kyle Shanahan’s offense has been carried by his defense every year he’s been HC. It was Mike McDaniel’s creative zone rushing attack that at least kept Kyle’s offense viable over the years, to help support his more dynamic defenses.

I will give Kyle credit for 3 important things during his tenure:

    1) Kyle did a great job over the years of fooling people into thinking he was the outside-zone run-game genius behind his creative and dynamic rushing attack, and not the true genius – MIKE MCDANIEL

    2) Kyle has done a great job of finding brilliant Defensive Coordinators (Saleh, Ryans) to cover up for his deficiencies as an Offensive Coordinator and utter INCOMPETENCE as a Head Coach!

    3) Bringing in John Lynch who, unlike Kyle, doesn’t treat the fans like a bunch of morons, but more importantly, Lynch has brough his clear vision and expertise to the 49ers consistently outstanding defense. So, CUDOS TO JOHN LYNCH!

    1. You are still a fool and probably always will be! Where were you when they won 2 games? Not a single post! They lose and you are right back with your drivel.

      1. Ha, the 49ers are a .500 team David, with the most vanilla running game in the NFL. Why would I hide from that?

And BTW, Kyle Shanahan is below .500 as a HC, and he is in his SIXTH season, so why would I hide from that, either?

Give it up dude! Kyle is a farce, he’s a fake, a phony, a mirage …. and if you can’t see that yet, you will in due time!

    2. agree totally. And Deebo is blanketed. He was easy to take out of the game yesterday. His enthusiasm wanes quickly when he is blanketed and shown up.

      1. You seem to forget your email address sometimes when posting. It’s difficult I suppose to keep track of your various handles. But at least you only have to remember 1 thought process. That is if there is any thought in the process.

            1. I still have it. But the Niners can be better and I have the right to express an opinion on it. Interesting to see our TE agree with me that the numbers played a sloppy, unmotivated, ill-prepared game. Kyle was embarrassed by the statement but it was true.

  6. Jack makes an interesting observation about Harbaugh. Have to wonder how Harbaugh would have fared if John Lynch, not Baalke, had been the GM and ran interference between JH and the Yorks, front office staff.

    1. Harbaugh hasn’t returned to the NFL for a reason. He still hasn’t won the big game, even in college for a reason. Guy lost a crazy amount of games in a row to his rival in Ohio State, did the same against the Seahawks.

  7. Kyle Shanahan is the perfect example of how NEPOTISM is an unfair advantage, because without his last name, Kyle is a NOBODY! Kyle took advantage of Mike McDaniel, and Kyle took advantage of his father’s last name!

Do I blame him? NO. But he’s nothing more than a product of a famous last name, and yes, that does bother me.

      1. Back in the day, I used to school Grant Cohn on this very blog, so I get what you are saying about nepotism, Rob. But back then I was one of Kyle’s biggest defenders. I do love his father Lowell though. In fact, I ADORE Lowell Cohn! ALWAYS HAVE!

The problem with grant is that he’s too quick to judge, and there is no grey area area with grant. He tends to see everything in black and white. But he’s proven correct, IMO, when it comes to Kyle. It’s not that Kyle isn’t a smart offensive X’s & O’s guy, because he definitely is. Kyle’s no dummy. I know people who have personally spent time with Kyle, and he’s a very smart guy when it comes to NFL offense.

The problem with Kyle is that he’s not a good HC. And now that he doesn’t have Mike McDaniel to handle his offensive game plans, particularly the zone run schemes, Kyle has no strengths as a HC. He might be a good HC, IMO, if he wasn’t so heavily governed by his emotions. If Kyle had the ability to separate his emotions, he might be capable. But the thing about Kyle, and those who know him will concur, is that KYLE IS ABSOLUTELY DRIVEN by his emotions. It’s why he is so conservative in his play calling in the 2nd half of close games.

Kyle is 100% convinced that running the football effectively is THE key to winning football in the NFL. That is his plan. And when that doesn’t work, he panics. he has NO PLAN B! If Kyle’s 49ers can’t control the game by running the football, they are cooked. Does that sound familiar, Rob.

The problem for Kyle is that the year is 2022. Almost every rule change over the last 15 years faover an offensive passing game, yet Kyle is stuck in the past. He knows he needs a change a QB, which why he mortgaged the future on Trey, but then he doesn’t have the emotional fortitude to let Trey be Trey, because like I said, Kyle is 100% driven by his emotions. He has ZERO patience for anything that doesn’t fit his vision. He’s tried to turn Trey Lance into somebody he isn’t, rather than adjusting this offense to who Trey is in reality. Does that make sense, Rob?

In today’s NFL, a Head Coach needs to be adaptable. Kyle is a lot of things, but adaptable is not in his vocabulary! And he thought Trey was going to be his QB this year, so he turned his outside-zone rushing attack into a inside power scheme, with the RB’s he aquired, and tyhat doesn’t work now with Jimmy, because the league has caught up to it.

And then would add the fact thatKyle refuse to trust his youn g players, specifically Tyrion Davis-Price and Jordan Mason, Kyle’s rushing attack is like treying to fit a round peg into a square hole. WHERE THE HECK IS JORDAN MASON, Rob? He’s their best best running back on the roster, and he can DO IT ALL!

        1. With you 100% on Lowell Cohn. How I used to look forward to reading him as well as Ira Miller and Glen Dickey in the Chron’s green sheet heading into the City every morning. Oh but those were glorious years to be a Niners follower. Also appreciate your terrific insights and analyis here.

        2. I find myself agreeing with Jaxson. He writes well and makes good points. I was hushed when I suggested many of his points a few months ago. I still think this is an average team that the League has figured out.

  8. David Lombardi
    @LombardiHimself
Talanoa Hufanga passed concussion protocol twice on Sunday but didn’t pass on Monday, so he’s officially in the protocol. Hufanga came in with symptoms today #49ers.

Hopefully Fangs is ready to go on Sunday. Can’t afford to lose anymore players on defense.
With Hufanga, the expectation for him making a big play is always there.

  9. How about this for an overreaction?

The 49ers have suffered more preventable soft tissue injuries than any other team in the NFL since hiring Ben Peterson, Greg Starek, and Elliott Williams. The 49ers should fire the entire “human performance” staff and start over.

  10. Who is responsible for “reps” for the 49ers. You can make excuses for that last drive but to my eye it looks like the 9ers offense has taken very few reps practicing their hurry up offense late in the game. (or earlier in the game for that matter!) Last game was the most obvious but Kyle’s record of being 0 for 24 in games where they are behind by more than one score tells me that it is a systemic problem. Kyle seems to me to be in run out the clock mode all throughout the game and really doesn’t know how to score quickly. Fine when things go your way. A disaster when they don’t. And finally, have defenses given up on the prevent D? With so little time and a 14 point lead historically even a mediocre passing team could gain chunks of yardage with passes down the middle quickly because the D is only concerned with running down the clock. Yet Atlanta’s D seemed to have very tight coverage while we ran out the clock on ourselves.

    1. I was really shocked to see that 0 – 24 stats especially KS is considered an offensive guru/genius around the league.
That last 4th quarter says a lot! KS and JG have been together for a while now and to not have been able to show urgency when down 14 pts is inexcusable. Either one of them should have been directing a hurry up offense but instead they gave us a perfect 50 yd 8 minute draining drive.

  11. He’s tried to turn Trey Lance into somebody he isn’t,

Wrong, he let Trey play the way he has played during his minimal time playing QB.

And then would add the fact thatKyle refuse to trust his youn g players, specifically Tyrion Davis-Price

Wrong, he gave TDP 14 carries week 2 and he has been out with an injury since then.

  12. If a coach with a losing record, is allowed to draft an inexperienced QB in order to get rid of a QB with a winning record, who’s to blame ?

    1. A losing record is a red herring. He took over the worst roster in the league and has twice made it to at least the league championship game. I agree that the drafting of Lance is debatable but it’s not worth debating for several years before we know what we have in Lance. I’m a Jimmy fan but I trust Lynch and Shanahan that they’ve made the right decision. Jimmy is a good quarterback but maybe Lance will be a great one.

  13. Old coach mentioned that we were beat by a mediocre team on Sunday. A look at the standings would indicate that most teams are mediocre. I don’t recall there being this much parity in recent years. Example, the Jets beat the Packers.

  14. “It’s time for Kyle Shanahan to look in the mirror! The 49ers’ offense has been an ugly watch this season and it’s time to point the finger at it’s architect.”

  15. KS’s biggest weakness as a HC is his inability to draft/sign and develop an O line. This O line needs a total rebuild this off season. McGlinchey needs to go. They need to take a look at Williams. Can he stay healthy? Is age begining to show? They need to start developing his eventual replacement. They need a high quality young center. At the end of the season they need to take a close look at Burford and Banks, if they haven’t shown great improvement over the year they may need to replace them. I think Banks may develop into an Avg. to above Avg. guard but I have serious doubts about Burford. If KS and JL can put together a top 10 OL then Jimmy G or Lance will be good enough to make the playoffs and possibly the SB. imho

    1. I still can’t get over how in the world Shanahan and Lynch went into this season with THIS O-line to protect their Franchise QB. It just boggles my mind. Burford, Brendel, and Banks up the middle? The 49ers could have easily signed a FA Guard and drafted Trey Lance & Creed Humphrey in the same draft to be the rock of the 49er offense for a decade. Instead they went with Aaron Banks. I truly don’t get it. If you really want to get steamed, focus on what Chris Jones does to Brendel and Burford this coming Sunday. If either player is required to block Jones 1v1 then Jimmy G better run for his life.

    2. “Banks has recorded 200 pass-blocking snaps this season, and not only hasn’t allowed a sack but also has not been responsible for a single defender to register a hit on the quarterback.”

      1. Agreed. Some people like oldcoach believe what they believe and the facts be damned. Mcglinchy has always been regarded as an above average tackle by the experts. So far this year the Oline has been pretty good despite the Injuries at tackle. Banks has only played 6 games and is looking like a real stud. Burford less so but he’s a rookie with 6 games under his belt. Brendel is probably the weak link but we’ll know better by year end.

        1. Whoa Felix buddy,
I am offering an opinion, you also are offering an opinion. We disagree and thats OK but to say that I ignore facts and your argument is based on fact is not fair. You write that ” McGlinchey has always been regarded as an above Avg. tackle by the experts” What experts? Everything I have heard or read about McGlinchey is that early in his career he was an above Avg. run blocker but a well below Avg. pass blocker. I believe his health issues have negatively affected his run blocking the last few seasons. I stated above that I felt Banks was developing well. I believe Brendel is terrible and Burford at this point in his development is below Avg. I am concerned with Williams health. You say I ignore facts well the fact is that the 49ers are one of the most talented teams in the NFL and they are 3-3. They are the worst offensive team in the 2nd half of games and I don’t think that is because of KS, Jimmy G. the RB’s, TE’s or WR’s that leaves the O line but just like you I am only offering an opinion. imho

          1. I have backed up my opinion with facts and reasons but I have yet to see you back up your opinion with anything. The 49ers are a run first offense and thus the reason McGlinchey and others were drafted, The last PFF grades I’ve seen on him is that he is an above average tackle and yet you think he needs to go without giving any reason other than “I believe”. Last year Trent was the highest graded player in the NFL and you want to draft his replacement? Unbelievable. Your opinions on the guards are not backed up by anything and you ignore the fact that they are rookies with only 6 games played. I believe your opinion on this is without merit and I’m going to debate it.

  16. Pat,
I am not among those who want to fire or trade KS but I do recognize his weaknesses. Number one being his out of control ego. He undervalues OL he believes that its his play calling that makes the offense go, while in reality the engine that powers the offense is the OL.. I believe it is JL’s job to build the roster and when he realizes that this team needs at least 3 new O linemen then all of a sudden KS’s play calling will be great again and either of their QB’s will win consistently. imho

    1. OC, I don’t want Kyle fired either. I’m a diehard fan of his. I think he’s one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL. I think you said it perfectly, though. It’s ok to recognize his weaknesses and after 5+ years into his tenure those weaknesses are much more recognizable. Kyle Shanahan is 42-45 as the 49er head coach. As Bill Parcells said, you are what your record says you are.

In reference to the O-line, I will give Aaron Banks credit where credit is due. He’s played much better than expected. He doesn’t get to 2nd level blocks very well but he doesn’t suck as much as I thought he would so there is that to celebrate. Doesn’t come close to changing the fact that drafting Aaron Banks over Creed Humphrey, who most consider to be the best young Center in the NFL, was a major mistake.

  17. 8+ Defenders in the Box Rate, Weeks 1-6:

    1. Nick Chubb, 29%
    2. Derrick Henry, 27.8%
    3. Jeff Wilson Jr., 27.2%

So …. Jeff Wilson Jr. is seeing more stacked boxes than every other RB in the NFL other than the league’s 2 best backs? If that isn’t an indictment of Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo, I don’t know what is! This is the product of a league that has absolutely NO RESPECT for the 49ers passing game, even though the 49ers have the best trio of YAC receivers in the NFL. Wow! Way to go Jimmy G, lol.

  18. In your “opinion” Williams health over this and the next season is not a concern? In your “opinion” Brendel isn’t one of the worst centers in the league? Here is my “opinion of PFF grades, there are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics. I doubt the way that they weigh the importance of their stats. I don’t mind you differing from my opinion, I do mind you doing it in a disrespectful manner. I worked with young people for 47 years and got used to their disrespect, most of them became respectful adults as they matured. I hope you reach that level eventually.

      1. No. No one connected with the 49ers read this blog. No one connected with the 49ers cares what is posted here. If I was questioning players intelligence, work ethic or courage then yes that would be disrespectful but questioning a players foot work or ability to get to the next level is not disrespectful on a personal level. We are fans sharing our opinions about what we believe would make our team better. My opinion is no more valuable than yours or anyone else here. It is supposed to be for fun.

  19. Should HC Shanahan be on the hot seat? The answer is yes. Here are my reasons:

Reason #1 – The current and previous owners always placed immense pressure on the HC that it was either Superbowl or Bust. The most successful owner was Eddie DeBartolo Jr., and he was the owner for all five of the 49ers championships. This type of attitude was both a gift and a curse. It was a gift for the 49ers Faithful because he won five Superbowls, a NFL Hall of Fame owner, and gave 49ers fans bragging rights for two decades. It was a curse because I believe Bill Walsh walked away too early after winning three Superbowls in ten years because of the immense pressure that Eddie D placed on him. Although defensive coordinator, George Seifort, took over as HC and continued the 49ers winning ways, it was really Walsh’s team. It’s like a five star hotel that changed manager, but the hotel is still five stars.

After giving control of his team to his sister, Marie DeBartolo York, the ownership of the team eventually was in the hands of Jed York who is the nephew of Eddie D. Current owner, Jed York, also wants to be as successful as his famous uncle and adapted the Superbowl or Bust mentality. His head coaches were HC Singletary, HC Harbaugh, HC Kelly, and HC Shanahan. The only successful head coach was HC Harbaugh who was 44-19-1. Harbaugh was given the pink slip for having an 8-8 record. I recall that was the official reason or public reason. That decision may have been a curse because maybe he was let go too early. HC Harbaugh led the team to the NFC championship game in three of his four years (1-2) and going to the Superbowl once (0-1). So if Walsh was pressured to WIN or leave, and Harbaugh was pressured to WIN or leave, why can’t HC Shanahan be held to the same standards? This is HC Shanahan sixth season and his record is 46-47, a winning percentage of .495.

Reason #2 – HC Shanahan was given the keys to the car and he’s made several terrible management decisions. He made a trade to get Jimmy G who is his most successful QB at 35-16 during his tenure. After signing Jimmy G to a huge contract and in 2021, HC Shanahan decided he’s not the QB of the future for the 49ers, HC Shanahan did a “Do Over” by trading three first round draft picks and a second round pick to move up to the third pick of the 2021 draft to get Trey Lance. Going into this season with Lance as the starter and before he injured his ankle, I didn’t feel that he believed in Lance’s abilities. He’s created a QB controversy and now there are several different camps. Camp Jimmy G, Camp Trey Lance, Camp Brock Purdy, and Camp Shanahan. I feel HC Shanahan tries too hard to be an old school HC by making his players perform or earn their playing time. In my opinion, it’s too much of a high school or college coach’s attitude of juniors and seniors are going first because they waited their turn to play and their loyalty to the program.

Reason #3 – HC Shanahan’s philosophy: Are they a passing team, a running team, or a balanced team. In his first year of 2017, I believed he emulated his dad, 49ers offensive coordinator, pass-first offense for Steve Young from 92-95. However, his QBs were terrible throwing interception after interception. After the trade for Jimmy G, he went 5-0 against playoff contenders and ended the 2017 season with a 82.7 QB rating. His per game averages for five games were 24-36 (67.4%) 312 yards, 1.4 TD, and 1 interception. In 2019, Jimmy G had a great connection with George Kittle, but it disappeared in the playoffs as they changed from a balanced offense (478 passing attempts and 498 rushing attempts) in the regular season to a completely different offense in the playoffs which was a run-first, rock em and sock em football. This was when I realized he emulated his dad’s Denver Broncos Terrell Davis running offense. I was ok with this if the 49ers had won the Superbowl, but we didn’t. When the coach and QB are not on the same page or the trust is broken, usually this is detrimental for the team. I felt he blamed Jimmy G because he overthrew Emmanuel Sanders in the fourth quarter. The press or camp Shanahan’s fans makes it out to be Jimmy G’s fault. It’s not like practice where they’re wearing shorts, a helmet, no pads, the assistant coach flips the ball to the QB, and a receiver runs 40 yards to catch it. In this Superbowl, Sanders probably took at least 4.5 seconds to fun the fly pattern, and the Chiefs D-line were probably closing in and pressuring Jimmy G.

Reason #4 – Who’s the hero going to be? In my opinion, HC Shanahan’s best year was 2019, and I thought the main heroes were Jimmy G and George Kittle because they had great chemistry. I thought they were a pass-first team where the passing game sets up the running game which I believed at that point in time was the reason for the success of their run game. Ala Joe Cool’s passing game set up the Roger Craig running game. However, in 2019 playoffs, they were played smash mouth football. We’re running the ball and you can’t stop us!

Last Reason #5 – Coaching, in-game decisions, halftime or in-game adjustments. From Monday through Saturday or non-game days, coaches have to create plays for the upcoming week and practice them, they also break down videos from the previous game (what went right, what went wrong, similar to a teacher correcting homework with the class), and they have to nurture their relationship with the QB because the QB is the field leader. The relationship between Jimmy G and HC Shanahan is suspect because they drafted Trey Lance and they wanted Jimmy G to pack his bag and leave. The relationship between Lance and HC Shanahan is also suspect because he wasn’t named a captain. The QB is the natural leader of the team because each offensive play begins with him. The HC and QB have to be on the same page. This is how he values the leadership of QBs by not naming him to be a leader. He has to develop his QBs and also gain their trust.

In-game decisions like calling a timeout on second down or third down right before a play is snapped. In all of my years watching Pat Summerall and John Madden call a NFL game, I learned that HCs should save their timeouts until the end of the game or end of the hal, in case the defense needs a stop and to preserve time for the offense in a two minute drill. Not only does HC Shanahan burn early timeouts, but also HC Harbaugh burned early timeouts on a second or third down in his tenure.

Halftime and in-game adjustments is a failure of the 49ers coaching staff. How many times have the 49ers had a lead and lost it, or 49ers offense are outscored by the opponents in the second half? In addition, it’s not just HC Shanahan, but also the defensive coordinator. How many times have the 49ers lost to a mobile QB like Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes, or Marcus Mariota? We’ve lost a bunch of times. Have they considered assigning a spy or two on a running QB. In the NFC Championship game against the Rams, the only offensive player who had success in the two regular season games against the 49ers defense was Cooper Kupp. We failed to double team him and he was one of the main reasons why they won and went to the Superbowl. I know the 49ers run a lot of zone defense, but have they ever considered double teaming their main guy while in a zone defense? Much like the box and one defense in basketball. The four in the zone defenders and the one is man-to-man on the scorer. When a team gets outscored in the second half of games, the other team is making more halftime or in-game adjustments than the 49ers.

What the 49ers needs to be is to be more consistent, make sound management decisions without creating controversy, become a pass-first and develop a QB so that 49ers will never be out of a game, develop a “go-to” offense (like Jimmy G to Kittle connection or Mahomes to Kelsey tandem), and outcoach the opponent in the second half of games. Maybe the 49ers should script a different set of 15 plays to start the second half of games. I’m sure the opponent’s defense makes those adjustments after the 49ers run left, run right, run up the middle, with variations of the wide back runs, a quick slant, a bubble screen to the WR, a screen to the RB, a short pass, etc…

I think I named all of HC Shanahan’s plays. Actually in the last three weeks, HC Shanahan has opened up the playbook with about 3-5 long passes per game and he’s opened the game with first down throws in two of the last three weeks. The fans who are not in camp Jimmy G say he can’t throw the long ball, but I always question whether or not HC Shanahan called for long passes. I believe HC Shanahan controls the play calling and who gets the targets.

Finally, when is the last time you seen a 49ers QB call an audible at the line of scrimmage to go after a particular DB? I just believe that HC Shanahan is not a genius, but a simple run-first, short pass, ball control offense. I believe he got the genius tag because he was the offensive coordinator for Matt Ryan and he was already an established gun slinger. As a result of complementing a run game with Matt Ryan’s accuracy, the Falcons went to the Superbowl and was tagged with a genius label.
