Young discussed Washington quarterback Jake Locker, who will likely be among the next few quarterbacks drafted after Luck. San Francisco could be a logical landing spot, but not if Young was the GM:

The week with Jim Nobody from Nowhere
From a reporter’s perspective, this week with 49ers interim coach Jim Tomsula, 42, has been a bit different from the previous 16 weeks with his predecessor, Mike Singletary.
Baalke will ‘visit’ with York on Saturday
Vice president of player personnel Trent Baalke appeared at practice today and said he will “visit” with 49ers president and CEO Jed York on Saturday.
Willis knows defense could have different look in 2011
Willis, obviously, can withstand pain. But he couldn’t do much when he received a concerned look after the results of an X-ray on his broken right hand came back after Sunday’s 25-17 loss to the Rams.
Nate Davis hopes he’s in Niners’ future plans
As the 49ers begin checking off the must-have items on their list – general manager, head coach and, finally, quarterback – it will be interesting to see what becomes of Nate Davis under a different regime.
Report: Baalke will be GM
Citing a well-placed source, CSN Bay Area has reported that Baalke will get the promotion. The report came after former Raiders personnel executive Michael Lombardi, who interviewed with 49ers president and CEO Jed York on Tuesday, said on NFL Network that he didn’t consider himself a candidate and thought Baalke would get the job within 48 hours.
Lombardi interviews, dismisses chances
After a blizzard of reports, tweets and one more interview, it appears 49ers vice president of player personnel Trent Baalke remains the leading candidate to become the team’s new general manager.
Takeo Spikes wins Niners’ top award
Spikes, who was sharing time with rookie NaVorro Bowman earlier this season, assumed a full-time role and shares the team-lead with three interceptions while posting the 10th 100-tackle season of his career.
Alex Smith will start; Willis will miss first career game
The last big decision of Mike Singletary’s 40-game tenure was his choice of quarterbacks for last week’s must-win game at St. Louis. Singletary chose Troy Smith. And last week’s backup conceded today that he wasn’t thrilled when Singletary gave him the news.
How the Niners could draft No. 2
In fact, it’s possible – if highly unlikely – that a loss could catapult the Niners four positions to the No. 2 spot in the draft since they would move past the Cardinals and the three four-win teams ahead of them all have played a stronger schedule.
Softli first; Baalke the favorite?
The NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora said, via Twitter on Tuesday, that “(he’d) be surprised if Trent Baalke doesn’t end up getting that position.” LaCanfora has broken several 49ers stories this season.
Willis, Justin Smith named to Pro Bowl
Patrick Willis, who was named as a starter, became the first 49ers player since Ronnie Lott to begin his career with four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. Willis said it was an honor to be linked with the Hall of Fame safety.
Jed York on KNBR
York had a chance to be a bit more expansive on topics such as the relationship he wants the future general manager and head coach to possess, the need to address the problems at the quarterback position, the 49ers current lack of an identity and whether it’s important to hire an offensive-minded coach.
Patrick Willis’ phone call to Singletary
Back home in the South Bay after the loss at St. Louis, Patrick Willis unwound by surfing the Internet on Sunday night. It was when Willis clicked over to ESPN that he saw the news: his organization had fired Mike Singletary. “I called him right away, you know, because I wanted to hear it from him as opposed to hearing it in the news and all that stuff,” Willis said to the reporters still hanging around the media trailer Monday afternoon.
Players respond to 49ers’ coaching change
In the wake of a coaching change, NFL players are expected to (1) express respect for the outgoing coach, (2) praise the new guy in equal measure, (3) utter the words “you understand this is a business” and (4) express confidence in management. The 49ers checked all the appropriate boxes Monday – not surprising when you consider that the players who addressed the media were handpicked by the team.
Paging Eddie D
“Interim” 49ers beat reporter Phil Barber here. As Eric Branch fights fatigue and holiday travelers to get back to the Bay Area, I’ll be covering the haps at 4949 Centennial today. I’ll throw you a longer report later. But before I get to some transcribing, here is a brief rundown on the press conference we just witnessed.
Still paying Singletary, York says money isn’t an issue
The Yorks, it’s worth noting, haven’t hesitated to open the vault recently – shelling out about $52 million in guaranteed money to lock up franchise cornerstones Patrick Willis and Vernon Davis to long-term deals.
49ers fire Mike Singletary
After the latest sloppy loss in a 5-10 season that began with division-title hopes, 49ers coach Mike Singletary was fired Sunday night shortly after the team’s flight returned home from a 25-17 defeat to the Rams.
