This is the live stream for the Week 8 Thursday night game between the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins. Ryan Sakamoto and I will announce the game live on the HotMic App. If you have an iPhone, you can download the app in the App Store using invite code COHN10 and sync our call to your television. If you don’t have an iPhone, you can watch the stream below. It’s about 10 seconds behind the television feed.

  1. One thing I might recommend, which might make the HotMic better, it to have a split screen, that shows the action along with Grant and Ryan.
    .
Then with the delay, the words match the action on the field. This is from the periscope perspective.

    1. They’d be flagged for copyright, as they’d be broadcasting the game without a licence to do so.

          1. Some people do work 5am to 2pm, and have a life and get up early to do so, early shift unlike you internet kids up late at midnite. Okaaaaaay.

              1. Pat, not all posters here reside in that TZ. Hence the confusion over bedtimes and 3AM postings. Son.

            1. Just a few comments above I replied that my first comment was sent at 8am. That should have clued you in that I do not share your timezone. But, I mean, maybe not. I wonder how you manage to type somewhat-coherent sentences, as there clearly isn’t much between your ears.

Also, get over yourself. I have to get up at 6:30 to go to work, and I don’t get back from work until 7pm.

              1. No such 8am comment above sent by you. You’re incoherant reply makes it clear there isn’t much between the ears. Plus you obviously don’t know much about copyright laws. You need to get over yourself about critiquing the writing style of comments above.

              2. Are timezones not a concept you’re familiar with? Also, I actually think I’m pretty well-versed on copyright laws. Fair use, for instance, would not apply here, as the feed would be direct from a licensed broadcast, wouldn’t be transformative and isn’t a parody or necessary for the content produced. Not to mention, it doesn’t need to apply to copyright laws – just twitter/periscopes own terms and conditions around copyright. These tend to have the position that any claim from a creator is valid, so even if Grant would be using the broadcast fairly, it would still be getting flagged, as per past precedent.

      1. Such an obvious observation that one would think you would not have to make it given that the rights message is stated at each game. ??‍♂️

        1. This telecast is copyrighted by the NFL for the private use of our audience. Any rebroadcast, re-transmission, account of this game without the express written consent of the National Football League is, do you know what it is, Howard? It is prohibited!

          Don Meredith on MNF

    2. Grant’s a risk taker–broadcast NFL content without the approval of the NFL. What could possibly go wrong?

      1. I thought they would get permission beforehand. In the baseball disclaimer, they talk about any accounts and descriptions of the game, without permission beforehand, is expressly prohibited.

        1. I thought they would get permission beforehand.

Really think Grant is going to pony up the legal fees to acquire said permissions? Or do you think the NFL hands that out gratis? lol

          1. The NFL might consider it free advertising, to gin up interest. Grant and Ryan are not going to siphon off content, and make a million bucks off of it, that otherwise would go to the league.

            1. Clearly you have no clue about the $NFL$. They squeeze every opportunity to the maximum penny.

            2. Sebbie, the NFL blocks videos containing NFL highlights and commentary from playing on other sites because it wants to direct the traffic to its youtube channel, rather than have it embedded elsewhere.

This is actually pretty fair on their part. What are they likely to gain from Grant and Ryan using their product for their videos? Most people watching are already NFL fans. On the othet hand, with Grant and Ryan showing the official video broadcast, people will use their platform to watch the game, which negatively impacts traffic to channels the NFL is licensed on, or their own platform. Not to mention, channels like Fox pay a lot of money to get the rights to show a game. Do you think they’ll be happy to find out the NFL is giving Grant and Ryan free license to share their broadcasts? No way.

            3. They might…. But won’t.

Eventually, HotMic–if it goes big time–will be a fee-based service. You want Grant and his most excellent posse to announce/analyze in-game action? You’re gonna be paying.

Highly likely HotMic is testing their operating model this season–discovering and working out kinks, evaluating the technology platform, AND testing the market. Sometime this off-season, the HotMic braintrust (and investors…) will decide: to make it a full-blown go for 2020, or go back to the drawing board and re-prototype, or just walk away like nothing happened. If it does fly, it won’t be free.

Think it’s a great idea? Become an investor. Send $$$ to Grant and company. You’re good for at least $100K, no?

  2. Although Carolina had 2 weeks to game plan our running attack, I believe JG will surprise by passing. This is not a prediction, but a belief.

Following the precepts of the great philosopher, Lau Tzu: Those who have knowledge, don’t predict. Those who predict, don’t have knowledge—via Lao Tzu Quotes.

Seb would be wise to heed the great philosopher’s wisdom also:

    1. “The best fighter is never angry.” Lao Tzu
    2. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu

    3. “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” Lao Tzu

    4. A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. Lao Tzu

    1. TrollD, better watch out. Posters will vilify you for taking advice from some one dead for over 2,000 years.

        1. You are generous, as you are divine, oh king of kings. Such an offer, only a madman would refuse. But the idea of kneeling, it’s, uh, you see, slaughtering all those men of yours has left a nasty cramp in my leg so kneeling will be hard for me.

  3. “Who do you cut to make room for the roster changes?
Jordan Matthews may be on the way out is my guess

Or the 49ers could decide to hold onto Matthews and release someone else.

I know some believe Kendrick Bourne has run his course, but he’s showed up for a few plays when necessary and knows Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

Or maybe the 49ers release Jeff Wilson Jr. and try to chance to get him on the practice squad. With all the running back injuries and some running backs being inefficient for 2019, I doubt he makes it that far. A team like the Miami Dolphins may just pick him up to stash him on the main roster as a developmental piece for 2020.”

  5. I won a couple diet cokes on that Vikings v Redskins game. 17 point spread against a team with a halfway decent defense is WAY too many points. Happy to collect on that one – nice payday. I will admit I was sweating it at the end when the Vikings got down near the goal line with a lot of time left on the clock. I wouldn’t have had to sweat it if Case Keenum didn’t get hurt. Dwayne Haskins may be the worst NFL QB I’ve ever seen play. Wasn’t really a fan in college. Had accuracy issues and he’s not really all that mobile. Seeing him play last night where he struggled with his footwork just making handoffs was a little bit sad. Drafting Haskins with the #15 pick in the draft is the perfect illustration as to why the Redskins will never be good while Dan Snyder is the owner. The owner and GM are absolute disasters.

    1. Haskin Robbins is the worst, followed closely by Trubiscuit. Both were inexperienced qb’s with little to no mechanics. Bad draft picks that will set both franchises back another 5 years….

  6. Can anyone explain to me what is causing the jump in 3rd down conversion rates?

We currently are at 45.12 with the 9th best. This, from an offensive point of view, is one of the major reasons for the success of the team this year (putting aside the defense).

Now, I know many of you probably thought, a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo makes the difference, but the percentage of 3rd downs last year with Jimmy under center was 30.3 for 28th worst. The team ended the year at 17th best with a percentage of 37.82.

Now this is a full 50% improvement from one year to the next, so what is going on?

    1. the percentage of 3rd downs last year with Jimmy under center was 30.3 for 28th worst.

Now this is a full 50% improvement from one year to the next, so what is going on?

Extremely small sample size from last year.

      1. It was JG’s contribution. If you look at this years first games it was even higher than the current sample. Something changed.

    2. Sour, probably many reasons for it. Rib probably gave you the best reason followed by the diminishing of pre snap penalties, first and second down plays have been excellent. The team is better talented, the HC is now experienced. The players have adjusted to the OC’s way of doing things…

      1. Actually, the offense is largely similar to last year in terms of starting personnel. Especially for the time period in question.

        1. True, but they through experience, have become more talented in Shanny’s way of doing anything.

    3. “so what is going on?”

They are getting themselves in 3rd and manageable (6yds or less) more often.

Last year they had 3rd & 6 or less only 48% of the time. This year that is up to 55%.

Credit an increased use of the running game and game management by Shanahan.

      1. That’s kind of my thinking too. Can you point out anywhere where I may be able to see this though.

My thinking is that Shanahan has matured as a play caller but I’d like to see some facts to back this up.

        1. “Can you point out anywhere where I may be able to see this though.”

          Watch the games.

Seriously though, last year they were 58%/42% pass/run. This year they’ve flipped that, 43%/57%.

A lot of that has to do with confidence in the defense and playing with the lead. Past that, it’s just being smart with game management. Look at the end of the 1st half against LA as a prime example. They missed the field goal in the end, but Shanahan worked the clock to perfection and kept the LA offense off the field.

  7. Interesting. Grant started talking about Saleh as a HC candidate. Now, Pelissero put Saleh at the head of his list of HC possibilities.
    .
Who will they cut to make room for Sanders? Jordan Matthews seems like the logical choice, but they may go bold, and cut Dontae Johnson. If they cut Jeff Wilson, he may be picked up by another team.
    .
With the Panther defense, the Niners need to be balanced, and keep them guessing if it will be a run or pass.

      1. The best part of the imposter is the real clown Sebnnoying spends more time pointing him then posting his blabber.
        Imposter 24
        Sebnnoying 23

        1. No, they figured him out, so he is a non factor. People are more interested in this undefeated team, and wonder what schemes KS will employ to counter their ferocious pass rush. They lead the league in sacks, so maybe the best strategy is the handoff.
          .
Glad JG is 7th in 3rd down completions.
          .
I hope the Niners invite the blitz, then attack the area the blitzer left.
          .
They should utilize Sanders on jet sweeps, bubble screens, and reverses, then fake reverses, to get the ball in his hands quickly.
          .
I am wondering if they should try to get to Kyle Allen early, by having Saleh dial up some exotic blitzes, or rely on a 4 man rush to get to him.
          .
So far, this is the best team that the Niners will have faced, so it will be a slugfest. Mccaffrey is having an MVP year.
          .
It’s OK. Trolls be trollin’, and the Niners are playing NINER FOOTBALL.

  8. Perhaps the 49er defense being ranked #1 in multiple statistical categories has more to do with the head coach buzz around Saleh rather than Grant Cohn spurring that discussion.

  9. Carolina by the numbers:

    OFFENSE
–The Panthers’ offensive line is ranked 23rd in run blocking and 22nd in pass protection.
–Panthers’ offense ranks 20th with 353.0 yards per game, 5th with 27.7 points per game, 22nd with 223.5 passing yards per game and 9th with 129.5 rushing yards per game.

    7. San Francisco 49ers 387.2 yds/gm
    Carolina Panthers 353.0 yds/gm

Reply: Stats are meaningful, but so is strength of schedule. Panthers, coming off a bye have rest, but the 49ers have HF advantage. This is a tough game to pick, but I’m leaning toward Robert Saleh and Kyle Shanahan in this one.

  10. I think this might be the game that ends the 49ers winning streak. CMC and the Defense carry the Panthers…

    49ers 17 – Panthers 23

    Hope I’m wrong.

  11. The rare instances when the 49ers choose to blitz, they’re hitting paydirt 80% of the time.

  12. The 49ers have allowed the fewest catches (19) and receiving yards (139) to opposing RBs this season, and Alexander The Great ranks 4th in coverage for LB’s….

  13. Jim Trotter, nfl.com…

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: The potential fatal flaw against Carolina.

Much of the focus this week has been on how Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen will fare against the 49ers’ stingy defense, which has allowed a total of just 10 points over the last three games. But an equally important question is: How will San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo hold up against a Carolina defense that is tied for second in takeaways with 15.

The Panthers have forced at least two turnovers every time out during their four-game win streak and have a total of 14 during that time. Only the Patriots have more during this span with 16.

Speed off the edge has been a key factor to the Panthers’ success on defense. Already blessed with Mario Addison, they added end Bruce Irvin in free agency and linebacker Brian Burns in the first round of the draft. Those three have combined for 12.5 sacks and 20 QB hits.

“When you have team speed on defense, it makes the field smaller because guys can cover more ground,” middle linebacker Luke Kuechly said. “And you couple that with guys who are smart and understand stuff, and it makes things a lot easier.”

If there’s a blemish on the 49ers’ perfect start, it’s been their lack of ball security. They have had a giveaway in every game but one, and their 11 turnovers overall are tied for 12th-most in the league. And unlike the Panthers’ Allen, who has yet to throw an interception in four starts, Garoppolo has tossed at least one in every game but a Week 4 drubbing of the Browns.

#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan wouldn’t tip his hand on how newly added WR Emmanuel Sanders will be used in the offense. But he did say Sanders will play “a lot.”

  15. @Seb message board held a vote… You won as the most uninformed annoying poster. The message board is granting your wish… You will be the official ball washer for the next home game… Sponsored by Nepotismcohn&sonink… everyone congratulate Sebbie as this is years in the making and we’ll deserved!
