Report: 49ers add veteran cornerback Anthony Brown

Former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown is signing with the San Francisco 49ers, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Brown spent seven seasons as a member of the Dallas Cowboys after being selected in the 6th round of the 2016 draft. He recorded nine interceptions in 94 games with Dallas.  In addition, Brown recorded 59 passes defensed and forced five fumbles. Over the last four seasons he allowed a quarterback rating of more than 90 just once.

The cornerback tore his Achilles in week 13 last season, his last year under contract with the Cowboys. He was recently released from the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad.

The veteran cornerback provides the type of versatility San Francisco looks for with its depth. Brown played 4,841 snaps during his time with Dallas. Of those snaps 3,154 came while line up outside on the boundary, and 1,274 from in the slot.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC in Houston, San Francisco met with Brown on Saturday. The 49ers must feel Brown is healed from his injury, choosing him over veteran Bradley Roby who they had in for a workout on Monday.

San Francisco had an open spot on its active roster after placing cornerback Samuel Womack on injured reserve last week. They elevated Tre Swilling from the practice squad to replace Womack on Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

The 49ers lost defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight from their practice squad yesterday. He was signed by the Arizona Cardinals to their active roster. Knight had been solid during the offseason and training camp, but was unable to break into San Francisco’s 53-man roster.

  1. It takes most players at least a full year to recover from an Achilles. I would rather have Jamison or Knight.

    1. I would rather be young and rich also . sorry old coach you cant have knight who was poached off the squad. NEXT TOPIC

    2. have you torn your Achilles? probably not and I have and have played college ball. you can recover in 7-9 months and retain speeds . Niners tried him out Saturday, You really think if he wasnt up to speed that the niners would sign him to the 53? Insightful posting dude

      1. I played college ball also. I have also observed any number of players who have torn their Achilles and it took them a 2nd season to return to their previous level. IE Jason Verrett. I hope Brown is fully recovered I alsowish the 49ers had manipulated their roster better and we still had Jamison and Knight on the 53.

        1. There’s a chance that Brown is a temporary bandaid since Darrell Luter Jr, could be returning soon.
I haven’t heard/read anything re Luter’s status lately, maybe Jack can give us an update.

        2. “ I alsowish the 49ers had manipulated their roster better and we still had Jamison and Knight on the 53”. Do you really believe that you are better at making personnel decisions than the professionals. Hysterical.

    3. I’m glad you’re here. I hope you accept your invitation, because if you’ve been looking for a way to earn residual income with almost no effort, then look no further. You’ve found it This is an opportunity you can run with for a long time to

“You really think if he wasnt up to speed that the niners would sign him to the 53?” “Insightful posting dude”

FYI: Anthony Brown was recently “RELEASED” from the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, making him a FA.
    * A player who is released from a practice squad is also free to sign with another NFL practice squad.

NOTE: difference between an NFL player being RELEASED and WAIVED:
    * Players with at least four accrued NFL seasons of service time are RELEASED. They’re vested veterans. When a player gets released, it’s the end of his contract and he becomes free to sign with any other team.
    * For players with less than four seasons of service time, they are WAIVED. Players who are waived are subject to waiver wire claims. Right now, the waiver claim order is based on the draft order (before any trades) from April.
    * Indeed dude, an Insightful posting.

    1. no dude your inept.

I never said anything about brown being signed and how they did that. tThe discussion from old coach was wishing that knight was still on the team. I said that knight was poached off the squad. maybe the word poached needs to be changed. Bottom line you cant cry about who left the practice squad. Maybe you need to read my posts before talking out your pie hoie. My comment was about the niners trying out brown and if he was that hindered with his injury he would not have been signed. Keep up the talk dude. I’ll sit you down.

Yep…..He played college ball, so you know he’s a bad MF as well as a key board warrior!
I suspect he played tight end? End of the bench and tight with the water boy? And he’s SENSITIVE, in a whiney sort of way……LOL….I wonder if he’s related to SEB?

        1. Goddamn….this isn’t Cohn’s YT channel..comments like these are commonplace there..it’s one thing to disagree about a player, coach or injury recovery..but to get personal about it? None of us is on the 9er medical staff, and I’m almost positive that none of have a medical degree in orthopedic medicine….

      2. jk: “I never said anything about brown being signed”
“You really think if he wasnt up to speed that the niners would sign him to the 53?”
“Insightful posting dude” Is that your “INEPT”alter ego posting?
BTW jk….I’d rather you be young and rich also…. get it?

    2. Uh oh Geep we got ourselves a computer tough guy here. I don’t know bout you but I am shakin in my boots.

  3. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC in Houston, San Francisco met with Brown on Saturday. The 49ers must feel Brown is healed from his injury, choosing him over veteran Bradley Roby who they had in for a workout on Monday.

  4. Maybe someone with more coaching experience than me can help answer a defensive game plan question. In the first half against the Rams, the 49ers were getting destroyed by quick throws against a soft zone. Shanahan even said, when you go zone you are open to giving up a lot of yards unless your front 4 gets to the QB. The 49ers weren’t getting to the QB because Stafford was throwing quickly. Lets set aside the exceptionally poor game plan to start the game and the fact Wilks made no in game first half adjustments. His half time adjustment was to stay in a soft zone but bring more pressure through blitzes. Why not just go man to take away the quick throws and then let Bosa and the boys feast? Ward is a good man cover corner. Demo is a decent man cover corner. Take away the quick throws on a short QB set and you’ve got a recipe for tons of sacks. To me thats the easier and better answer than staying in a soft zone and blitzing more. The only plausible explanation is there may be some injury issues in the secondary that forced Wilks to go to a soft zone.

    1. 1.6
Not that I claim to know any more than you do….BUT…. I suspect some of the reasons why are:
      1) The 9ers D was not able to get pressure on Stafford. The 9er D was having trouble getting of the field 1st half.
      2) The 9er DB’s didn’t matching up with NB Puka Nacua man to man and Wilks was afraid Stafford would hit Nacua long, for a quick TD? As you point out, the 9er D was getting destroyed by quick throws against a soft zone and Wilks didn’t want Stafford to start connecting with Tutu Atwell.
      3) CB Samuel Womack was out 6 – 8 with MCL injury.
      4) Rams RB Williams totaled 52 yards and a TD on 14 carries and 48 yards and 1 TD on 6 receptions.
      4) I agree, poor game plan to start the game (Wilks underestimated the Rams) and he made no in game first half adjustments.

      1. 1. 9ers D wasn’t getting pressure on Stafford because he was taking 3 step drops and hitting wide open receivers on shallow drags in front of the zone. That’s the point on why I’m saying it was a poor game plan.
        2. Niners DBs match up great with Nacua. They don’t match up well with Atwell.
        3. Lack of depth very well could be why the 9ers went zone.

        1. 1.6 says
“Niners DBs match up great with Nacua?” REALLY?
          * FACT: Rams rookie wide receiver Puka Nacua followed up his 10-catch performance in Week 1 with another remarkable outing, racking up 15 receptions for 147 yards. Nacua’s 25 receptions through two games are the most in NFL history through a player’s first two games, comfortably surpassing the previous high mark of 19!
1.6: “They (9er DB’s), don’t match up well with Atwell?
*FACT: Stafford completed 7 out of 9 attempts to Tutu Atwell, for 77 yards.

          1. Nice. You can recite stats. Great job. Those stats don’t have anything whatsoever to do with the point. Go back and rewatch the game or just look at Puka’s highlights on ESPN. 49ers gave Puka a free release off the line of scrimmage. They didn’t try to jam him at the LOS even once. On some of those crossing routes, Puka was 5 yards wide open within his first 4 steps because the DBs were bailing to Zone. Not sure how Wilks looked at that and didn’t switch anything after the very first Rams offensive possession. That was absolutely awful strategy. And yes, the 49ers DBs do a good job with bigger WRs in man coverage. They struggle with the smaller faster wide receivers because the 49ers DBs don’t have top end elite speed. Atwell vs Lennoir is a losing matchup for the 49ers in man coverage in my opinion.

“Nice. You can recite stats. Great job.”
Too bad you can’t…but you do a “great job” of whining and making excuses!

  5. 1.6 Pat, thanks for the thoughtful question. I know enough, as you do, to question the coaching. A plausable explanation is that Wilkes is inferior. Certainly, whatever the strategy Wilkes would choose to adopt, why wait until after halftime? Half the fanbase was screaming at their TV’s after the first series because we’ve seen it before. I was only able to get glimpses of the game after halftime and will revisit it on NFL GamePass. I saw press coverage against the slot receiver. Are you sure we were completely in soft zone?

    1. Lee,
I can’t say how much man the 9ers played in the 2nd half but I do know they were in man on the play that Lenoir made his Int.

      1. I’m not sure this is correct. I could be wrong but I think Demo dropped into zone but was able to make a break on the ball because Stafford was late with the throw. Oliver’s Int was definitely a soft zone defense. The RB was wide open and the ball clanked off his hands for an Int.

  6. I don’t think Wilkes is as bad as some think. The same criticisms were made of Saleh and Ryans and they turned out fine.

The thinking was probably to force the Rams young offense to build consistent long drives to to score, and usually that’s what this 49ers defense is predicated on- forcing the opposition to go the length of the field on them because the odds are somewhere along the way they’re going to get tripped up. It turned out the Rams receivers were pretty damn good and Stafford was playing on another level.

Kudos for the adjustment after the break and still eliminating the big plays on defense.

It’s not always something you did wrong. Sometimes the opposition is just playing well. If you watch closely you can see the Rams players were quite into the game in the first half. The 49ers defense was dispirited and half-a$$ing it in the first half, getting knocked off the ball on multiple occasions. Tackling was also poor, with Rams receivers and back looking like Deebo at the point of contact.

Perhaps a vocal halftime speech lit a fire under them as well. But I didn’t see anything that was too concerning. These games come and go. The Raiders game last year when their backup QB sliced up our defense or the Falcons game had no bearing on the overall season this defense had.

It was a win and I don’t think it was anything to be concerned about, especially considering how dominant they were on the road in Pittsburgh.

  7. Wilks is still learning this defense, the players, how the scheme was run last couple of seasons, as well as how the division opponents and other teams try to game plan against this defense. ITs gonna take some time for the new DC and the defense to totally gel. In the end adjustments he made worked the game was won.

  8. The 49ers lost defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight from their practice squad yesterday. He was signed by the Arizona Cardinals to their active roster. Knight had been solid during the offseason and training camp, but was unable to break into San Francisco’s 53-man roster.

  9. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday, citing sources, that the 49ers signed Swilling from the practice squad to their active roster.
    * A talented young CB with ideal size (6-1, 196 pounds) that the team likes and has impressed in SF.

  10. NYG players the 9ers need to neutralize to win the game:

    * With RB Saquon Barkley out with an ankle injury, Giants QB Daniel Jones will have to carry the Giants offense. That could be a problem with the Giants LT Andrew Thomas out with a hamstring and LG Ben Bredeson (concussion)
NOTE: The Giants O-line are tied for the NFL’s second-most pressures allowed (35) heading into Week 3.
    * The 9ers front 7 must contain Jones and force him to beat them with his arm, not his legs.
    * The 9ers D need to shut down TE Darren Waller, WR Isaiah Hodgins and rookie WR Jalin Hyatt, who had 89 receiving yards on just 2 receptions last week.
