Report: 49ers trade Alex Smith to Chiefs for second round pick

According to Jay Glazer, the 49ers have traded Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, and according to Adam Schefter, the Niners will receive more than one draft pick in return.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport believes the Chiefs will trade the Niners the No.34 overall pick in this year’s draft and a draft pick in 2014 for Smith. I’ll update you as more details surface.

If this report is true, the 49ers have five draft picks in the first 93 picks. They could easily trade up for a top defensive end or tackle if they choose to.

UPDATE: According to Jason LaCanfora, the 49ers will receive the Chiefs 2013 second round pick for sure. The 49ers could potentially get their 2014 second round pick as well depending on Smith’s performance.

The 49ers must strongly consider trading up for an impact defensive lineman, like Sharrif Floyd, Sheldon Richardson, Ezekial Ansah or Star Lotulelei (if he passes his heart exams). The 49ers also could trade up for a pass rusher, like Dion Jordan, Barkevious Mingo, Jarvis Jones or Bjoern Werner.
