SANTA CLARA — The 49ers are scrambling to remake their secondary.

They don’t know if cornerback Richard Sherman will be available for their next game. And they placed starting free safety Adrian Colbert on the Injured Reserve list Monday. Colbert has a high ankle sprain which will take between six and eight weeks to heal. He probably will not return this season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Colbert injured his right ankle breaking up a pass Sunday during the 49ers 39-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

“He was having one of his better games,” Shanahan said Monday. “It had been a challenge for him the last few weeks. In this game, he covered sideline to sideline very well and was running and hitting. And he made a real good play when he got hurt.”

  1. We need a playmaker on the backend. Hoped it’d be Ward when they drafted him, but that is pie in the sky now. Bring in Thomas next year if he’s available and willing. Don’t think Reed is a FS, but we’ll see….

  2. These guys are dropping like flies… some drop every game (Breida, Foster, Thomas, Garcon). This is another area the Niners need to get stronger at (literally). Freddy P Soft is in full effect and has been most of the season… Seemed like the Rams were on monster PEDs the way they tossed the Niners around like rag dolls while stealing their lunch money. The only players who come ready to brawl it seems is Kittle, Buckner, the tackles and perhaps Warner. On Gurley’s TD run both Buckner and Foster got knocked down at the same time by a single Rams’ lineman. Just when you think you’ve seen it all….

  3. I’m not prone to writing guys off early in their careers. I simply can’t see how Solomon Thomas makes the leap from where he is right now to an every down d-lineman who is good against the run and a good pass rusher. Yet, I don’t think it’s time to give up on Thomas. For the life of me, I can’t see how the 49ers went into the 2018 season and thought Tartt and Colbert were competent NFL Safeties. I’ve never been a big Tartt guy. He’s good against the run and poor in pass defense and he’s often injured. Pairing a Safety who can stuff the run but is poor in pass coverage with a d-line that is decent against the run but poor at rushing the passer seems like a recipe for disaster. Colbert had a few good hits but was still wildly uneven in his performances in the last half of the season last year. I just don’t see either one of them being starting NFL safeties. Honestly, the rest of this season should be a tryout for next year at the Safety spot. Sign a FA Safety in the offseason and then draft a safety in the 2-3 round. These guys simply aren’t going to cut it.

    1. Harris will compete against Tartt next year for SS. Moore competes against Colbert for FS after interning for CB.

Way, way, way too early 2019 NFL draft strategy:

      #5. Greedy Williams, CB, LSU
      #37. Jachai Polite, Edge, Florida
#69. Kelvin Harmon, WR, NC State
#101. Max Scharping, OT, Northern Illinois

      F/A
      Earl Thomas
      Brandon Graham

*An exercise in futility but fun nonetheless….

      1. When you’re 1-6 it’s never too early for draft strategy. I’ve now seen LSU play 3 times this year. Their secondary is the best secondary I’ve seen in a very long time. Greedy Williams is the real deal. He’s deceptively big and an excellent cover corner. The other guy I really like in the secondary is their Safety – Grant Delpit. Both players are Sophomores so not sure when they will go into the draft. Both are high first round picks. Absolute studs.

  4. Oh hooie, the team has more than enough talent to compete and win. Talent is overrated. They need better coaches. Let’s just hire and fire every year until we find another “genius”. This crew “stinks”. At least according to some! :)

  5. We’ve discussed Coaching and discipline a lot around here recently and last night was a great example of how bad both can be around the league. The Falcons had two chances to put the game away needing one yard for a first down and both times were called for false starts. Brutal. Then the Giants get the ball back with the gift of extra time from the Falcons and proceed to try two QB sneaks needing two scores to tie which burns the clock down to 5 seconds. Worst Coaching and lack of discipline I’ve seen in a very long time.
