Schefter: “If Kaepernick performs well, as he has, that would make Alex Smith expendable this offseason.”

Here’s what Adam Schefter just said on Sportscenter about Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith’s future.

SCHEFTER: “They reserve the right to go back to Alex Smith at any point if Kaepernick struggles. We don’t know how long that leash for Colin Kaepernick will be. But the fact of the matter is if Kaepernick plays the way that he has the last two games, it’s going to be his starting job and it’s going to be his starting job indefinitely.

“If that’s the case, then you take a look at Alex Smith and his contractual situation. He will be unhappy being a backup, and the 49ers and very few teams in the league would be willing to carry a quarterback who is scheduled to make about $8 million as a backup.

“It creates a situation where clearly, if Kaepernick performs well, as he has, that would make Alex Smith expendable this offseason.”
