Six 49ers named to 2023 NFL Pro Bowl

The 49ers will be well represented at the 2023 NFL Pro Bowl. A total of 13 players from San Francisco have been selected, six to the roster and seven as alternates.

Those selected include Talanoa Hufanga, Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, George Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk, and Trent Williams.

Hufanga makes his first Pro Bowl in his first season as a starter. The second-year safety leads the 49ers with four interceptions and is third on the team with 76 tackles.

This will be the second Pro Bowl appearance for Warner. Warner is second on the 49ers with 98 tackles. The linebacker also has two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble this season.

Bosa makes his third Pro Bowl roster. The only miss during his career came in 2020 after suffering a knee injury in week two which kept him out for the season. Bosa currently leads the NFL in sacks with 15.5 and quarterback hits with 38.

Kittle continues to be arguably the best all-around tight end in the NFL. He reaches the Pro Bowl for the fourth time. Kittle has six touchdowns this season, second most on the 49ers. His 12.9 yards per catch are second most in the NFL.

Kyle Juszczyk will make his seventh consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl, his sixth as a member of the 49ers. He has 18 receptions for 174 yards and a touchdown this season along with five carries for 14 yards and one score.

For Trent Williams, this will be the tenth Pro Bowl of his career and third as a 49er. He becomes only the ninth offensive lineman in NFL history with at least ten Pro Bowl appearances in their career.

Those who will be going as alternates include Jake Brendel, Robbie Gould, Christian McCaffrey, Ray-Ray McCloud, Deebo Samuel, Charvarius Ward and Mitch Wishnowsky.

Two surprise names not on the list are Brandon Aiyuk and Dre Greenlaw.

Aiyuk is well on his way to the best season of his career. The third year wide out leads the 49ers in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Greenlaw is also having a career season. The linebacker leads the 49ers in tackles with 111. In addition to being a tackling machine, Greenlaw has forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles, has an interception and a touchdown.

  1. Thanks Jack.
I definitely see how these players deserved this honor.
But my biggest surprise is seeing Jake Brendel make the alternate list.
Not bad for a player that some here were chafing at the start of the season.
    I’m happy for him.

    1. I’m disappointed that Wishnowski didn’t make it I think he is the best punter in the NFL.
I’m disappointed that Greenlaw didn’t make it I think he is the best LB in the NFC.
I’m disappointed that C. Ward didn’t make it he is a close to a shut down corner the 9ers have had since D. Sanders
I believe that J. Ward would have made it if he had played the whole season.
It wouldn’t have broken my heart if Hufanga had been left off his mistakes even out his good plays.

    2. Greenlaw being ignored is a joke of a decision but it may spark him to destroy teams in the playoffs. Huf was a year ahead of where he should be. He is emerging but not quite yet an all-star. Nice to see the hard-working Juice rewarded again as the NFL’s best FB. I wish he had more chances to run as he is always a difference-maker in the offense.

  2. Oh I left out CMC I believe if he had been with the 9ers the whole season he would have been on the team and it shows how devalued pass catching RBs have become

  3. I would have to go with Bosa, although there are others who could receive this prestigious award.
    Trent Williams.
Not sure if he can qualify due to injury, but Jimmy Garoppolo certainly could receive it since he came in to have his best career playing even without a TC.
These would be my top three.

    1. AES,
      I’m thinking JG also.
Williams will win the McKittrick and Bosa will win his second Walsh in a row. If not JG then Bosa and JG for the Walsh.

  4. I think McCaffrey was left off the roster because of his mid-season move. I think thats dumb and his value is evident in the 49ers success but I think switching teams mid-season hurt his pro bowl voting numbers. Definite snub though.

Dre Greenlaw is the best 49er LBer – bar none. You can’t change my mind. Leaving him off the pro bowl roster is pure ignorance.

I absolutely love the energy and play making ability Hufanga brings to the team. He is absolutely a difference maker and a late round steal. Having said that, I have this nagging apprehension about his lack of speed and coverage ability. I keep going back to this debate I have with buddies about having a reliable player who never misses an assignment. like Jimmie Ward, or having a guy like Huf who might get beat from time to time but he’s also going to get turnovers and sacks with a few splash plays per game. I’m a bit conservative so I tend to lean toward the guy who never misses an assignment over the splash play but get beat occasionally guy.

    1. well said. McCaffery is the MVP of the season so far. 7 wins in a row. Look behind the stats to see who more than anyone has made that possible,

  5. Looking to Saturday’s game, Washington head coach Ron Rivera said that DE Chase Young will play.
I’m not sure how effective CY will be after a long absence, but he could be a game changer when fully healthy.

The 49ers couldn’t ask for a better scenario then playing at home when compared to the cruel temperatures in the mid-west and up to the east coast.

  6. I believe that this weeks game will be a real test of the 9ers O line. If they can pass this weeks test it will go along way towards convincing me that this O line has improved and is a top 15 O line. If they don’t Avg more than 4.8 yards per carry or give up too many pressures on Purdy then I fear there will be big problems in the playoffs. imho

    1. Coach,
Washington comes in with the #8 defense in the league and with the return of Chase Young, this will be the best defense that Purdy has faced.
I agree with you that this will be a good test for the 49ers Oline and Purdy going forward. Playoff teams like NYG, Phil and C’boys will be taking notes.

Another possibility is that Shanahan might start pulling out some starters during the game which could change the tone of the game either way.
It will be an interesting game for sure.

  7. Jack
Can’t the PD do anything about the spammers? It seems to getting much worse. Just an observation.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

  8. Per 49erswebzone and John Lynch.
“The 49ers opened his (Javon Kinlaw) 21-day practice window this week, hoping to activate the defensive tackle from the injured reserve list in time to contribute in the postseason and maybe even get back on the football field as early as this weekend against the Washington Commanders.”

Personally, I’d prefer he’s held out until the post season. This would allow him more practice time to build leg strength and flexibility.
I’m any case, it’s good news to get Javon back.

    1. Yeah, good news to have Kinlaw back but I would not wait until playoffs to get him some action. Put him on a pitch count to get him into football shape. 5 plays this week. 10 plays the next week. 15 plays the following week. Then full go in the playoffs if he’s all good. It will take him some time to get fully back into playing at a high level. Don’t wait until the playoffs to knock off the rust.
