The Jim Harbaugh Game: The coach and his world of contradictions

Here is my Monday column on Jim Harbaugh. SANTA CLARA – Here’s how you play The Jim Harbaugh Game: Listen to his next interview. Write down the exact time he sets himself up for future contradiction. Then, predict how long it will take for the contradiction to occur – a year, a month, a day, an hour, a minute, etc. Harbaugh most recently set himself up on June 11. One…

49ers sign Cox to 2-year deal. Rogers and Ginn on way out?

The 49ers signed 25-year old cornerback and return specialist Perrish Cox this morning to a two-year contract. This could signal the end for Carlos Rogers and Ted Ginn Jr. in red and gold. Cox will most likely compete with Tramaine Brock for the third CB job, while Chris Culliver and Tarell Brown will start. On special teams, Cox could take Ginn’s job as the primary returner. He returned punts and…

Niners franchise tag Dashon Goldson. Will they re-sign Alex Smith next?

The 49ers just franchise-tagged Dashon Goldson, a move that will cost the team about $6.2 million in 2012. Will the Niners re-sign any more of their free agents before free agency starts? It seems pretty clear at this point that Carlos Rogers will “test the waters” and see what other teams can offer him. Same with Ted Ginn Jr., and Adam Snyder, and maybe even Joshua Morgan, too. If there’s…

The top-five best and worst moments of the 49ers 2011-2012 season

Here’s my list of the top five and bottom five 49er moments from the 2011-2012 season. The Best Moments 5. Justin Smith’s forced fumble v. Jeremy Maclin in Philadelphia to beat the Eagles in Week 4. The Niners’ record was 2-1, and although they had just stormed back from a 17-point deficit to take a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had plenty of time to drive…

How the Niners offense can improve on third down and in red zone

This is a blog about Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, but first, some context. According to Matt Maiocco, Dashon Goldson is the Niners’ top candidate for the franchise tag. Franchising Goldson would cost the Niners $6.2 million in 2012, while it would cost them $10.6 million to franchise their other top free agent, Carlos Rogers. So, Goldson most likely will be a Niner next season. But, will Rogers? He wants…

The Wide Receiver Blues

The 49ers, as currently constructed, are probably talented enough to play in the Super Bowl right now. But, if they add a big, No.1 wide receiver this offseason they could be big preseason Super Bowl favorites for 2012, even without an elite quarterback. They’d have a complete juggernaut of a roster. Their biggest weakness would be Alex Smith, and he’s not weak. So, which wide receiver should they add? He…

Josh Cribbs on the Browns new offense: “Not too many wrinkles in there.”

Q: You went to Dunbar High School in Washington D.C. with Vernon Davis. What were your impressions of him in high school? CRIBBS: Elite guy. We knew he was blessed with size and strength. You could look at him and tell already that he was going to be an athlete. When I first met him, he came in eighth grade before his ninth grade year, I was like, “Wow!” Like…

According to the 49ers, they have placed Joshua Morgan on injured reserve. Morgan broke a bone is his lower leg on Sunday. As you already know, the 49ers signed WR Brett Swain to take Morgan’s place on the roster. But the team has also released practice squad center Chase Beeler this morning as well. More to come later.

Harbaugh says Joshua Morgan will be out “for an extended period of time.”

SANTA CLARA – Here’s the transcript of Jim Harbaugh’s Monday press conference, courtesy of the 49ers. Film review, how did that go? Watching everything from yesterday? “It was good. Really on all sides of the ball, defensively, offensively, special teams, you really look at it and say that was solid, very good football. May not have been flashy, but it was good, solid football. Everybody played with great effort. Everybody…

SAN FRANCISCO — The 49ers just e-mailed me these quotes from Vernon Davis and Joshua Morgan, so I’m passing them along. VERNON DAVIS On his evaluation of the offense in the first half: “I think the offense came out here and did a great job. Despite not getting in the end zone, I think we still did a tremendous job with learning a new offense and putting everything together within…
