SANTA CLARA Reggie Bush just spoke in the 49ers’ media room. Here are selected quotes. Q: How would you describe Colin Kaepernick and his style of leadership? BUSH: He’s a hard worker. He works really hard. And I’ve said this before – he’s one of the hardest workers I’ve been around, especially in the weight room. He works his butt off. He’s constantly on the field talking to guys, just…

49ers get smarter in the passing game

This is my Saturday column. Some say the 49ers suffered a damaging blow when the NFL suspended their No. 3 receiver, Jerome Simpson, for the first six games of 2015. Some say they showed no football wisdom in signing him, a player likely to be suspended. I say forget Jerome Simpson. His absence will have zero impact. He wasn’t the Niners No. 3 receiver, anyway – not in training camp,…

49ers training camp report: Day 12

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights of the 49ers’ eighth padded practice of training camp. THE GOOD 1. RB Reggie Bush. Didn’t play during Saturday’s preseason game against the Texans, and may not play at all during the preseason – the coaches seem to want to keep him healthy. But, from the looks of practice, Bush will play a lot during the regular season. Today he had a team-leading…

49ers training camp report: Day 9

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights of the 49ers’ fifth padded practice of training camp. THE GOOD 1. ILB NaVorro Bowman. During an 11 on 11 fourth-down drill, Bowman tagged Colin Kaepernick for a sack when Kaepernick was scrambling toward the sideline. After Bowman tagged him, Kaepernick threw a deep pass across his body to Anquan Boldin, who caught the ball for a gain of about 40 yards. After…

Jim Tomsula on the 49ers’ offensive play-calling: “We have cut down verbiage.”

SANTA CLARA This is the transcript of Jim Tomsula’s Wednesday press conference, courtesy of the 49ers’ P.R. department. First off, how’s LB Aldon Smith’s foot? Is it minor? “He got it stepped on. He had it stepped on earlier in OTAs. So, then he got banged again yesterday, that’s all. It’s aggravated. We’re not going to push it. He’s got the ice bags on and there’s really nothing else to…

Report: 49ers reach contract agreements with RB Reggie Bush and OL Erik Pears

The 49ers have reached a contract agreement with 30-year-old running back Reggie Bush, according to Adam Schefter. From 2011 to 2013, Bush averaged 92.7 yards from scrimmage per game. In 2014, he averaged just 50 yards from scrimmage per game. It was one of the worst seasons of his career. Still, Bush caught 40 passes in 2014. He’s a better receiver than the 49ers’ other small running back, Kendall Hunter,…

BARROWS: Has Justin Smith decided whether he will retire? Whitner says the 49ers defense is going to have to beat the Patriots

SAN FRANCISCO — Donte Whitner spoke at the podium after the 49ers beat the Dolphins on Sunday. Here’s what Whitner said. Q: Can you talk about your body slam of Reggie Bush? WHITNER: We just want to be physical any way we can. When you’re physical as a defense, it gives the offense something else to think about – not just your scheme, not just your pass rushers, but they…

Dolphins-49ers matchups: Part IV – Jonathan Martin vs. Aldon Smith

The 49ers play the Dolphins Sunday at Candlestick.  In the meantime, I’ll break down five key matchups. LT Jonathan Martin vs. ROLB Aldon Smith Aldon Smith is arguably the best 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. Rookie tackle Jonathan Martin is the 7th-worst tackle in the NFL this season according to Pro Football Focus. Martin has no chance against Aldon Smith. That means the Dolphins pocket will collapse on obvious…

Fangio to Goldson: “If the quarterback starts to slide, you’ve got to get off of him.”

SANTA CLARA — Vic Fangio spoke in the 49ers media tent Thursday afternoon. Here is what he said, courtesy of the 49ers.   What kind of problems do the Dolphins present? “Well, they’ve got a talented young quarterback who’s a good athlete, runs well. He’s a scrambler, got a strong arm. I think he’s gaining more and more confidence with every game that he’s played. I think they’re a much…

Sunday matchup: Dolphins offense vs. 49ers defense

I think the Dolphins will struggle dramatically on offense, especially in the passing game. They do not possess a wide receiver who can stretch the field. They basically have a “chains” or “sticks” passing game – it doesn’t extend beyond ten yards. They have not demonstrated the capacity to design “double move” routes for any of their wide receivers or tight ends to get deep. Anthony Fasano has the speed of…
