Tarell Brown explains his improvement, and more

SANTA CLARA – Here’s the transcript of Tarell Brown’s locker room Q&A from this morning.

Q: What were your thoughts on the win?

BROWN: I haven’t watched the film yet but I feel we can improve in a lot of areas. We did a lot of good things but we can also get better.

Q: What was your reaction to the handshake?

BROWN: I think a lot of people are blowing it out of proportion. I think coach was just excited for us and was amped up like he said. Coach will talk about it and he’ll address the issue.

LC: Is that what they told you to say?

BROWN: No, I just got here.

LC: In a fight, which coach would win?

BROWN: You know, I’m always going to go with my coach. But I don’t think none of those guys wanted any part of that. In the heat of the battle, emotions catch the best of you and it happens.

Q: How much does his personality mean to your success?

BROWN: I think Coach is an example of what we are as a team. He’s a very energetic guy. He works really hard and we also do, too. So we feed off his energy day in and day out and I think it helps us as a team.

Q: Is he emotional?

BROWN: I don’t think so. Coach always has himself in a proper manner. He does what he’s supposed to do on and off the field. Emotions got, I wouldn’t say the best of him, but coach was just excited about the win. All of us guys, the odds were against us going into Detroit and we came out and fought. And he was excited for us.

Q: Even he said the turnaround could take a while – are did you expect this could happen so fast?

BROWN: I definitely did. We definitely had a great team coming into training camp. Working with these guys day in and day out, the effort we put in and the coaches on and off the field, it’s amazing. Guys put in extra time even when they’re not supposed to be here. I definitely knew we had the capability of doing it.

Q: What do you need to work on in “improvement week?”

BROWN: A lot of guys resting up as well, getting an early jump on Cleveland. Coach definitely is going to give us the film and we’re going to get to studying, and just extra time to improve and everybody to heal up. We’ve got a lot of guys banged up and coming back from injuries.

Q: You fell behind on the road now for the third time – did previous comebacks help?

BROWN: We don’t even think like that. We just go out there and play football. I think every guy is just going out there to compete for the next guy beside him. We all hold each other accountable, so at the end of the day we just fight and fight and fight and wherever the chips may fall they fall. We definitely feel like if we always give ourselves a chance we’ll always be in the game.

GC: Have you taken your game to a new level this year or are you just getting the opportunity?

BROWN: I think a little bit of both. I’m getting an opportunity and the coaches trust in me. They’re giving me the leeway to just go out there and make plays and just compete. I’m a competitor, I love what I do, and I just want to go out there and make plays for this team. It’s a little bit of both – studying the game well, knowing the ins and outs of the game. It’s going good.

GC: The improvements you’ve made – are they more mental or physical?

BROWN: Just pretty much mentally – learning the game a little more. Sometimes you think too much, you don’t go out and just react, and I’ve been doing a lot of just reacting. Coach is giving me the flexibility to do that and he’s putting us in a lot of great calls for us all to go out there and make plays as a team.

GC: When you say ‘Coach,’ do you mean Harbaugh, Fangio, or Donatell?

BROWN:  All of them. They’re doing a great job of preparing us week in and week out. I feel like we have a great group of guys coming together, putting some pieces of the puzzle that we had missing, and a lot of guys are stepping their games up and helping us out.

GC: What was it like covering Calvin Johnson?

BROWN: It was exciting because you know he was going to get the ball. It’s always exciting when you face a guy that you know they’re going to target. It was an exciting task.
