The 49ers quarterback job is Trey Lance’s to lose

At the beginning of the offseason, most expected the 49ers would move on from Jimmy Garoppolo to open the door for Trey Lance.

Unexpected shoulder surgery for Garoppolo curtailed trade talks, and the team has chosen to keep the quarterback on the roster.

The situation around Garoppolo has led many to question how the team feels about second-year quarterback Trey Lance. After all, the 49ers used three first-round draft picks and a future third-round pick to land their quarterback of the future.

“There’s a lot of questions of what this means for Trey,” Lynch said. “The great news is we’re extremely positive, as I’ve said, and Kyle’s said, on Trey’s progress. This offseason, he’ll have ample opportunity — as will Nate [Sudfeld] — to get plenty of reps. And we’re looking forward to that process.”

Here is how I see this playing out.

Lynch’s comments are as close to showing your hand as one can get without laying their cards on the table.

Without coming out and saying it, Lynch is telling us the team expects Trey Lance to be the starter and Nate Sudfeld the backup.

Garoppolo will not begin throwing until early July. As a result, the two will get all the practice reps during OTA and minicamp practices.

The job is Trey Lance’s to lose at this point. The 49ers don’t expect that to happen.

With other teams refusing to trade for an injured Garoppolo at this point and lacking salary cap space, reporters asked Lynch if the team would release the quarterback.

“I don’t foresee that; he’s too good of a player,” said Lynch. “I think Jimmy will be playing for us or somebody else. He’s too good of a player not to be.”

Lynch went on to tell reporters the 49ers feel good about having what they believe are three solid quarterbacks while most teams are looking for one.

I believe this is posturing on Lynch’s part and don’t believe we will see Jimmy Garoppolo throw another pass in a 49ers practice. If Garoppolo steps onto the practice field at the start of training camp, it will be due to Trey Lance performing poorly during the offseason program.

Expect Trey Lance to be the starting quarterback for San Francisco in week one and Jimmy Garoppolo to be elsewhere.

    1. I think their are at least 5 options on the table… 1. Edge 2. IOL 3. S 4. Cb.(slot?) 5. Wr.
      The edge rushers and Safeties I prefer, will most likely be gone (according to all the mock machines I’ve used.)

      1. Shoup
        * After signing FA DE’s Kerry Hyder and Jordan Willis and Sampson Ebukam as the starter, IMO, I don’t see the 9ers signing an EDGE with draft pick #61 or #93.
        * With pick #63, if he’s still available. I see the 9ers drafting S Lewis Cline, to replace Tart.
        * With draft picks #93 and #105, I see the 9ers addressing IOL with UCLA OG/T Sean Rhyan and Kentucky OC Luke Fortner.
        * With draft pick #134 I like SMU WR Danny Gray. His 4.43s 40 gives the 9ers a deep treat. He’ll need to bulk
        up and add ~10 pounds.
        * With draft pick #172, I like NDSU RB Pierre Strong. He give KS a replacement for Raheem Mostert .
        * With draft pick #187, I like Virginia TE Jelani Wood. At 6’7″ X 259 and 4.61s 40, he’ll give Lance a big red
        zone target
        * Draft pick #220: Kentucky DE Josh Paschal
        * Draft pick #221: Alabama CB Jaylan Armour-Davis
        * Draft pick #262: Toledo S Tycan Anderson…. (ST Gunner)
        * UDFA’s *
        * Baylor FS JT Woods
        * Georgia OG Justin Shaffer
        * N, Carolina RB TY Chandler

      2. Not trying to be a jerk here.
        I’m posting “late”, when very few people will read my reply – but you might.
        You mean, “I think there are at least 5″.
        If it was just a typo, fine.
        If you tend to use “their” for “there”, it’s constructive criticism, so that you’re aware of it – if you even care.

  1. Maybe the 49ers and Garoppolo can make some sort of amends. He comes back to compete for the starting job knowing the he can win the job or get released. In that scenario I love him going to TENN. The other option would be to make amends compete in July and August and get traded then.

    On paper Trubisky, Mariota, Darnold, Davis, and whatever rookies work, but once September rolls around it’s a different ball game.

  2. You must forgive me, I have grown weary of the Jimmy Garoppolo saga. I shall now turn my attention to the draft and hope the 49ers are as worried about their offensive line as me. Wholesale changes and upgrades at every position except left tackle should be on the table. Putting all your eggs in the Trey Lance basket and then refusing to protect him would be roster building gross negligence.

    1. Changing 3-4 guys up front is more likely to make the pass protection worse. Why are you so reluctant to be patient with Banks?

      1. I saw him play in college. Not impressed. Was very disappointed in the pick. All evidence with lack of playing time even behind a guy who was playing poorly for stretches indicates my impression was correct. If I’m wrong and Banks turns out to be average or even good then I’ll be as happy as anyone but I will be shocked. Aside from Banks, look at the 3 other starters, Mack, Brunskill, and McGlinchey. They weren’t sure Mack was even coming back and even if he does he’s a 36 year old center who graded out below average last year. Brunskill is a backup at best who did not play well last year. McGlinchey is coming off a major surgery so the 49ers need a good backup at that spot. Those are major question marks at 4 positions on the O-line. I’d like to see the 49ers sign a couple of proven free agents to bolster at least 2 of those spots.

        1. Don’t you remember Ben Garland and Hronnis Grassu? I think the offensive line is definitely a concern and agree drafting an IOL in the 3rd round is important , but don’t sleep on McKivitz and we get Skule back from IR. Plus Jaylon Moore will compete for a spot on 53.

    2. 49ers will draft an O. Lineman first. I see either a Guard / Center, or Mc Glinchys replacement if
      Jaylon Moore doesn’t cut it. Expect Aaron Banks to start at left guard, Trent @ left tackle, draft pick
      @ right guard (future center when Alex Mack retires). Boring I know but it’s the biggest area of need.

  3. I think at this point the Garoppolo ship has sailed (as far as getting something for him in a trade). They might as well keep him for now and wait until teams get desperate when QB’s start getting hurt. They may get a 2nd round pick from a team that needs a starter. Even a team like Detroit may be willing to trade for Jimmy if Goff doesn’t show something this year.
