Training camp report: Wednesday, the good — Kaepernick, Owusu and Culliver

SANTA CLARA – Sorry this post is so late; practice ended at 7:30 tonight. This is the good. The not-so-good will follow.

Chris Owusu caught roughly five passes, including the catch of the day against the first-team defense. He beat starting cornerback Tarell Brown deep down the sideline and leaped to catch a Josh Johnson pass over free safety Dashon Goldson. Owusu has been on a tear for the last week. At times he looks as good as the starters.

Chris Culliver continues to look like the best cornerback in training camp. Today he broke up both of Alex Smith’s third-and-long passes, and on the second one he almost intercepted the pass but Michael Crabtree hooked his arm so he couldn’t make the catch.

Colin Kaepernick was the only quarterback to convert a third-and-long against the first team defense. On third and 12, he threw a bullet to Brett Swain, who was being covered by Tramaine Brock. It’s nice to see a Niners QB attempt a pass like that.
