Troy Smith will likely start Sunday

Troy Smith will likely start at quarterback Sunday against the Rams.

But based on what Mike Singletary said today, Smith might just be keeping the seat warm until Alex Smith is fully healed from his separated non-throwing shoulder. Singletary said he did not think that Alex Smith has been medically cleared to practice.

“As of right now it looks like it’s going to be Troy,” Singletary said.
“Something could change it just depends on how Alex progresses through
the week. But as of right now, Troy’s going to take all the snaps.”

It has been speculated that Troy Smith might have earned the starting
spot with his fill-in performance in a 24-16 victory over the Broncos in
his third career start. In the aftermath of the win, Singletary
encouraged the four-year veteran to not be “a one-game guy.” But
Singletary suggested today that Alex Smith, if he was healthy, would be starting Sunday’s game.

“If Alex (was) healthy,” he said, “I think right now he’d still be the quarterback.”

Smith’s injury, of course, allows Singletary a bit of wriggle room. If
Troy Smith plays well and improves to 2-0 as a starter with a win
against the Rams, it quite possible Singletary could change his stance.

For now, though, he’s at least publicly not fully committing to Troy Smith as Sunday’s starter.

“There’s always that element,” he said of Alex Smith possibly starting
Sunday. “The thing for me, as a coach, I’ve got to with the guy that’s
going to take the snaps. But I never want to rule out anything. I’m not a
doctor. I’m not a trainer. So I always go to those guys for that
information.”
