Vernon Davis on his role with the 49ers: “I have to accept it. I have to live with it. I have to deal with it.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Vernon Davis caught four passes for 30 yards Sunday against the Rams. The Pro Bowl tight end has not caught more than four passes in a game since Week 5 against the Bills.

I just asked Davis in the locker room how he feels about his current role on the 49ers. Here’s what he said.

ME: The last few weeks, Greg Roman has approached you after games and said, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t able to get you the ball.” Did he talk to you today after the game?

VERNON DAVIS: No. No, he didn’t.

ME: How do you feel about your level of involvement today?

VERNON DAVIS: Um…(eight-second pause). I do what I’m told. That’s pretty much it. At this moment, that’s all I can really do. My main focus is making sure that I’m a team guy, just accepting the simple fact that the coaches are giving me a certain role to play. I have to accept it. I have to live with it. I have to deal with it. I look at the bright side of things, and I know we have more games and there will be plenty of opportunities for me to help this team.

ME: Do you like your current role?

VERNON DAVIS: I accept it. We’re all competitive. Everybody on this team is competitive. For me, I want to help this team – that’s my main focus. I want to make plays – that’s what I want to do. But if it’s not given to me, I’m not going to put my head down and pout. I’ll accept it.
