SANTA CLARA — Check out my Periscope report for Friday’s training camp practice. I will post detailed breakdown of the good and not so good from today, so stay tuned.

  1. nice pix of Pierre; however, it might help if he had some head bob and actually tracked the ball into his hands!!!!!!!

  2. Grant: Once the pads come on, the more physical play of Garcon will be needed. I wouldn’t be surprised if you start to see more of a connection between JG and PG starting tomorrow.

  3. I liked the Witherspoon pick, and actually liked him better than his teammate who went a round earlier to Dallas. The biggest knock on him was tackling. He was very good coverage player at Washington and has the preferred height for the position in this system.

    1. DB’s have the potential to be pretty darn good. Feeling good about AW, Sherman, Colbert, Tartt, KW and Ward backing them up. See what happens.

  4. Well thought out points, really enjoyed this periscope , I am sure if reads all of your stuff, love joe Williams, you made me excited, I really appreciate your hard work and your dry humor. I know I disagree with you sometimes but I respect you and I am enjoying being on this blog, excited for them to get to pads so I can get your take on the line, still think the guards will be better than you think. Richburg is key, center is so important in Shanhans offense ! Thank you Grant ! Live Kendrick Bourne myself!

  5. Witherspoon looked good last year, glad to hear he has continued to impress. The play of the DBs will go a long way to determining the success of the D.

I take your point on not wanting to give up on Joe Williams, but would they carry a 3rd RB that doesn’t contribute on STs?

    1. I’ve been trying to find the link for a quote I saw today, attributable to Lynch, that basically says “the more you can do to help the team, the better”. Not earthshattering or surprising, but meshes with what you’re saying.

  6. Should the 49ers be interested in the Titans’ recently released former second round pick?

After he did not report to training camp, former 2nd round pick Kevin Dodd has been informed he’s being released by the #Titans.
    1:16 PM – 24 Jul 2018

Dodd hasn’t had the start to his professional career for which he had hoped. Since 2016, Dodd has amassed only a single sack and nine tackles in 18 games played. This serves as a bit of a let down for a former Clemson standout with a 12.5-sack senior season.

Dodd obviously seemed to be upset with the Titans for using their 2018 second-round draft selection on Boston College pass rush specialist Harold Landry. Dodd saw the writing on the wall and chose to not report to camp. In my opinion, this is not really the right way

On the other side of the coin, the 49ers are in desperate need of a pass rush. It is the worst aspect of the entire franchise at this point in time. They need help and they need it quickly.

I’m not saying that Dodd is that guy. But he is a 26-year-old former high-round draft pick with natural pass rushing talent who can surely be had for a low price. Competition is a wonderful thing and it wouldn’t be at any loss to the 49ers.

  7. They did a lot of play-action today and they’re going to do a lot of it this camp because Jimmy’s never been in an offense that utilizes it. He needs to practice it. A lot.

  8. https://ninernoise.com/2018/07/27/49ers-2018-training-camp-recap-analysis/

“In every individual drill, Sherman looked 100 percent. It is very safe to say that Sherman has the ability to return to prime form at some point this season because he looked good out there.”

“There was one throw that blew the entire crowd away during a 7-on-7 period. It was a play action play where Garoppolo was pressured and threw a perfectly placed duck to a receiver, who had three defenders around him. Yes, it was a duck, but it was perfect and amazingly accurate.

“So yes, Kiara Mia did not ruin Jimmy.”

“Kyle Shanahan acted as the scout offense quarterback. He threw nice spirals and was pretty accurate.”

      1. Just don’t want to hear Jimmy crying “momma mia” after a tough loss ?.
        Stay strong Jimmy!

  9. Looking forward to tomorrow’s report. Wish the 9ers would allow some video to be shared.

  10. It seems more and more like you have to pay to read the 49er reporters. One of my favorites, Barrows is now behind a pay wall.

  11. Grant
    Excellent summary.
It feels like the talent level has improved a great deal since last year.
Can’t wait to the first preseason game see how they play against another team.

  12. Grant, it almost never fails. Your camp reports are so good (made better with Periscope) it inevitably makes me feel bad for giving you a hard time during the offseason … for real, GOOD STUFF!

I look forward to your next one!

  13. I agree with Grant about Marsh. He wants to joke around and have fun. Patriots are serious about winning SBs.
    .
Hope Marsh does not smile the whole season, and they make it to the playoffs.
    .
Glad Joe Williams shined in practice. Happy to hear Attaochu get to the QB on a speed rush, but am a little concerned about McGlinchey.
    .
Hope Grant is not too down on Pettis. My theory about WRs is that teams should wait and sign battle tested and battle hardened Free Agents. Rookie WRs tend to get hurt because they need to build muscle so they can take the hits. Hope Pettis and his smooth moves, result in TDs.
    .
I am glad JG can overcome the coaching, and completes more passes while throwing into triple coverage.
    .
Grant mentioned KS being upset that players were missing assignments. That is mainly a coaching problem. The coaches need to thoroughly prepare the players better.
    .
Grant said that some cut Niner players will be snatched up by some other teams. That is why I proposed trading away bubble players to get something for them, instead of cutting, and losing them for nothing. Several teams have had injuries, so now, they have huge needs.
    .
Very informative periscope, loaded with keen insights and player evaluations.
    .
Technically speaking, Grant did a better job with the lighting. Still needs to get better centered, but don’t we all?

    1. Marsh didn’t like playing for New England because they had him dropping into coverage way to often.

Maybe San Diego can take Jimmie Ward of our hands with verettt going down.

  14. https://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/1866-film-room-49ers-opponent-quarterbacks-part-jared-goff/

“In 2017, according to Cian Fahey’s Quarterback Catalog, Goff threw 21 interceptable passes, meaning he threw the ball 21 times straight into the hands of a defender but the defender could not secure an interception.”

“Goff’s generally poor decision making also costs him a number of throws on the sideline or outside the numbers each week.”

“Goff also generally never sees the defenders that drop into zones and he doesn’t really have the arm strength to fit the pass into tight windows to mitigate those mistakes.”

    1. I think that we are going to eat him up and expose him as the mediocre QB that he is.
