SANTA CLARA — Check out my Periscope report for Saturday’s training camp practice. I will post detailed breakdown of the good and not so good from today, so stay tuned.

  1. Pettis should play the X… exactly what I said when they drafted him!

And yes, Sherman needs to get his hands on Goodwin. He is slow. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be any good in this scheme, so long as he can be physical at the LOS and Witherspoon is good enough on the other side to be left 1-on-1 most of the time. Shade Colbert over to Sherman’s side, like the Seahawks did with Browner.

    1. Don’t get sucked in with lil cohn’s bull.

Even in his prime, Sherman couldn’t keep up with Goodwin. Sherman has never been a burner and Goodwin has Olympic speed. Hasn’t stopped Sherman being a perennial pro-bowler.

  2. Grant,
I was about 4 rows up from you (near main entrance). Was hoping to take a pic with you after practice but you disappeared into thin air ?.

Did you notice Foster in the south end zone getting his left leg stretched? I don’t believe that he continued practicing after that.
Do you know if he is ok?

      1. It’s all good Grant.
I didn’t want to distract you and your little note pad.
        Btw, nice report.

Levi’s did a great job with busing fans from the regular parking to the practice field. All the attendants were courteous and helpful.
        Good job all around.

  3. As Grant mentioned earlier, all tackling only involved touch tackles. It looked as though the defense was quick to converge on plays and D-line was getting some nice penetration on passing plays. JG tried throwing a little flare pass on the left side that was batted down. The pass seemed a little lazy as well.

In all, practice seemed to go well and more importantly, there were no injuries. I’m a little interested in Foster’s leg being stretched by a team trainer in the end zone.
Hopefully is was only stretching and nothing more – but I don’t believe he did anymore practicing after that.

  4. Good stuff Grant!

I’m glad you touched on Pettis’ unique talent as a route runner. I touted all of those things that make his ability to separate special, while I was defending his draft selection on this blog months ago.

Yes, I would trade Foster for Mack.

I think your underselling McKinnon as a runner. It’s McKinnon’s all around fit in this system that makes him such a dynamic weapon. Yes, he’s a fantastic receiver, but it’s much tougher to sell play action, a staple of Kyle’s offense, if the opposing defense doesn’t respect the RB’s ability as a runner. Breida will get plenty of carries, but the JET is the more complete RB in this system. He’s more physical than Breida (and would almost certainly manhandle Breida in, say, a wrestling match for instance) despite being almost exactly the same size, and is every bit as explosive as Breida, even if Breida might have an edge when it comes to long speed, so I wouldn’t expect Breida to earn more carries than Jerick, though I think he’ll get enough to keep Jerick as fresh as possible.

    1. I don’t know how you measure physicality, but Breida is a much harder runner than McKinnon.

      1. physicality = “manhandling” opponent in wrestling match….
McKinnon > Breida in the ring…
ergo– McKinnon is the class of the RB room…

  5. I don’t think Breida runs harder when it’s game time. I’ve seen McKinnon run over guys who are considerably bigger than him, something I’ve yet to see Breida do.

  6. I believe Jimmy put the Niners ahead of schedule, but they would have succeeded in bringing the Niners back even if Jimmy didn’t all into their laps. What we need to remember is that they probably still had the option of signing him as a free agent this season. They would have either gotten either Jimmy or Cousins or one of the Quarterbacks in the draft . With out Jimmy they do not get six wins and are drafting high enough to get one of the top QB’s. We need to remember that Shanahans system is more important than any one player on his team.

Grant you made some really good observations but then self destructed again at the end. You know I think you might have a career in broadcasting. Your video’s allow you to quantify your opinions which makes them more acceptable even when we disagree with them.

What you didn’t do in this video that you did in your earlier ones , is give alternate outcomes for some of your primary points. When you allow for alternate it makes you appear more circumspect. This was your worst video in in respect to the TC’s Possibly because answering those questions threw you off.

  7. So, what’s with many players having their jersey pulled way up in front? Just asking…. I have no hidden agenda. Just curious.

    1. Cassie,
I believe it is some sort of deep state political statement. Or maybe its not.

      1. We should gather the jersey numbers of all who had them pulled up and perform a numerical analysis… Perhaps a line from the movie Princess Bride would be reveled…which would tell us…

“My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die”

      1. Why you’re right, they had their pants on…one of the 14 times outside of games that they do that. Good eye!

  8. Grant,
I don’t have time to watch all 45 mins of your video, so I was hoping in your written post you might mention how T. Moore seems to be developing and how DJ Reed has looked. Thanks

  9. Jeff Deeney
    @PFF_Jeff
Nearly one in every five receptions resulted in a TD for Pettis over the last two seasons. He definitely can be a red zone threat. #49ers

    1. This guy has speed and I think that was not discussed as much as needed when he was drafted.
He has the ability to be moved around a lot and he will be someone that teams will have to prepare for while leaving someone else form being double covered.
Speed is so hard to prepare for.
Pettis is going to be Jimmy G’s ace up the sleeve on 3rd and short.

  10. Nice periscope. Thank you for being so centered, literally. I appreciate candor, and while some of the critiques were brutal, I am glad you do not put on those rose tinted glasses. I want to hear about the Niners, warts and all.
    .
Getting to your question, no, I would not trade Foster for Mack. The Raiders have many holes, so I would advocate for a multi player deal. The Niners should offer Aldrick Robinson, Jimmy Ward, Arik Armstead, Eli Harold and Matt Breida for Mack. Raiders lost Crabtree, and Lynch is a shell of his former self. They need help on the D line and secondary. The Niners should not trade away a foundation stone on defense. Maybe they can swallow some of Ward’s salary to sweeten the deal. 5 for one would be a blockbuster deal, but both teams would benefit. Raiders would be getting essentially an additional draft class, and the Niners can afford Mack, who instantly upgrades the pass rush. Gruden may be desperate enough to pull the trigger on that deal.

    1. I would not package Breida. This kid came out of nowhere to take carries away from Hyde last season.
He may do the same thing this season with McKinnon being the recipient of the same pattern.
